Obit - Amos Carl Hallford



Amos Carl Hallford, of Oxford, passed away March 30, 2014, at the age of 85. He was born February 2, 1929, in Toccoa, Georgia, to the late George and Arlie Hallford.  He was a hard worker having retired from the Keebler Bakery after 20 years of service.  He dearly loved his family and enjoyed deep sea fishing and working on cars.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jo Hallford; son, Raymond Carl Hallford; brother, Jeff Hallford.

Survivors include his children, Rick Hallford and Dan Callahan of Oxford, Cheryl and Lamar Knight of Conyers, Michele and Albert Morvik of Newborn, Randy and Tonya Hallford of Oxford; grandchildren, Tera Mesta, Jason Knight, April Stoelzel, Adam Womack, Hannah Parker, Alex Morvik, Sarah Parker, Lenton Parker, Madison Morvik, Andrew Hallford, Caroline Hallford; great-grandchildren, Josie Mesta, Justin Mesta, Keith Womack; sisters, Sarah Morrow, Mary Yearwood; brother, James Hallford; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Services for Mr. Hallford will be held Thursday, April 3, 2014, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, April 2, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.

Obit - Arthur E. Norred, Jr.

Arthur E. Norred, Jr., of Oxford, passed away March 27, 2014, at the age of 67.  He proudly served his country in the United States Army during Vietnam, but was stationed in Germany.  Mr. Norred retired from AT&T after 30 years of dedicated service and was a member of Lovejoy United Methodist Church.  He was a Georgia Bulldog fan and enjoyed traveling and playing golf with his many friends.  He was preceded in death his parents, Arthur E. Norred, Sr. and Lucile Norred.

 

Survivors include his wife, children, sisters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  

 

A Memorial Visitation for Mr. Norred will be held Sunday, April 6, 2014, 2:00 – 4:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington.  A private Graveside Service will be held at a later date in Oxford Historical Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Silverleaf Hospice, 435 Hawthorne Avenue, Suite 500, Athens, Georgia, 30606 or Silverleaf Alzheimer’s Care, 2106 McGee Road, Snellville, Georgia, 30078.

Obit - Yamile Matos

Yamile Matos of Covington passed away March 26, 2014.  She was 48 years of age at the time of her death.  Mrs. Matos was a quiet and caring person who loved the Lord and attending church.  She loved her family and will be remembered as a wonderful wife and a fantastic mother.  She was preceded in death by her mother, Maria Esperansa (Garcia) Acosta.

 

Mrs. Matos is survived by her husband, Jesus Matos; daughter, Caterina Matos, both of Covington; father, Jose Acosta of Delray Beach, FL; sister and brother-in-law, Lourdes and Marcos Perez of Hialeah, FL; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Matos will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, March 29, 2014 at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, with Pastor Samuel Aleman officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, March 28, from 6:00 – 9:00 P.M.

 

Obit - Edward Casey

Edward Casey of Mansfield passed away March 25, 2014 at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle.  He was 78 years of age at the time of his death. In his younger days, Mr. Casey was a volunteer fireman. He loved snow skiing, golfing, bird watching, collecting coins and watch fobs. He especially enjoyed napping.

 

Survivors include his wife Holly Casey; daughters and sons-in-law, Kari and Dwayne Whitaker of Mansfield, Shawna and Aaron DeMeyer of Bartlett, TN; granddaughters, Sydney and Morgan Whitaker; grandsons, Gregory Edward DeMeyer, Jack Thomas DeMeyer; sister, Evelyn Luippold of Greenfield, MA; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

The family will schedule a Memorial Service for Mr. Casey at a later date.

Obit - Dr. William H. Murdy

Dr. William H. Murdy, Charles Howard Candler Professor of Biology, Dean of Oxford College, Civic Leader, Environmental Steward

 

Dr. William H.  Murdy retired from Emory University in 1999 after forty years of dedicated service as a teacher/scholar in biology along with many other roles and responsibilities including Dean of Oxford College.  Dr. Murdy, 85, died on March 19, 2014 of complications from Alzheimer’s disease.


He was a native of Fairhaven, Massachusetts and, as a youth, aspired to be a farmer.  He graduated from the Bristol County School of Agriculture, and then served four years in the United States Army.  Utilizing the GI Bill, he entered the University of Massachusetts and received a B.S. degree in 1956.  He later earned a PhD in Botany from Washington University in St. Louis in 1959.


Dr. Murdy joined the Emory faculty in 1959, chaired the department of biology for eight years, and served as president of Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi and the University Senate.  Among many honors, he was appointed Charles Howard Candler Professor of Biology in 1987 and received Emory’s Thomas Jefferson award for distinguished service to the university in 1990.

Over the years, he taught a variety of courses dealing primarily with plants and authored numerous papers on plant systematics, evolution, biodiversity, air pollution and environmental ethics.  For the last twelve years of his tenure at Emory, he served as Dean of Oxford College of Emory University in Oxford, Georgia.  In the 1990s, he was appointed by then Governor Zell Miller to the State’s Preservation 2000 Program advisory committee.  He was a life member of the board of trustees of the Atlanta Botanical Garden, a trustee of the Nature Conservancy of Georgia, a member of the Oxford College Board of Counselors and the Covington Kiwanis Club.  He was also a member of the City of Oxford City Council and served two years as Mayor.


A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at 11:00 A.M.  at the Old Church in Oxford, Georgia.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Bill and Nancy Murdy Scholarship Fund, Oxford College, Oxford Georgia, 30054 or the Nature Conservancy of Georgia, 1330 West Peachtree Street, Suite 410, Atlanta, Georgia 30309.


Dr. Murdy is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Nancy Wardick Murdy, his son, William H. Murdy III  (Miriam) of Brunswick, Georgia, his daughter, Martha J. Orlando (Danny) of Kennesaw, Georgia, four grandchildren, Daniel Warren Gordy, Sarah Jane Gordy Kennedy, Rebecca Grace Murdy, Patrick Jefferson Murdy, a great-grand daughter, Virginia Rose Kennedy and several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Dana Massey

Dana Massey, 38, of Newborn, passed away suddenly March 18, 2014. Dana lived life to the fullest, and enjoyed spending time outdoors and camping. She cherished her family, and was the glue that held everyone together. Above all, Dana loved her children unconditionally and would do anything for them.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Evelyn Parmer.

Obit - Rose Eve Davis

Mrs. Rose Eve Hoffman Davis, 92, of Rome, Georgia, formerly of Covington, died March 18, 2014. Mrs. Davis was born November 7, 1921, to the late Anson E. and Annie Maude Hoffman in Eden, FL. She was a member of High Point Baptist Church, and lifelong resident of Covington, until 2008, when she moved to Rome after her husband died. Mrs. Davis was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and a committed volunteer for her church and community. She served as a Cub Scout Leader, was a supportive Boy Scout spouse, and was very active in TOPS in Covington. Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Durward Davis, a longtime Scouter in the Atlanta Area Council; and her siblings, Arthur E. Hoffman, William C. Hoffman, both of West Palm Beach, FL, Robert C. Hoffman of Hagerstown, MD, and Dorothy Hoffman Johnson of West Palm Beach, FL.

 

Survivors include her son, J. Anderson Davis and his wife, Janice of Rome; grandchildren, Claire Catherine Davis of Atlanta, Hunter Anderson Davis of Athens; sister, Mary Hoffman Knowles of Lakeland, FL.

 

A Graveside Service will be held Friday, March 21, 2014, 1:00 PM, at Lawnwood Memorial Park, 1111 Access Road, in Covington, with Dr. P. Joel Snider officiating. The family will receive friends to celebrate Mrs. Davis’ life on Friday, March 21, from 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington. Janie Corry Martin of Atlanta, born and raised in Covington, died March 16, 2014, at the age of 96. She attended Maryville College, in Maryville, TN, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Mrs. Martin taught first grade, for the Atlanta Public School System, for nearly 40 years. She cherished her family, and mastered the dual role of mother and teacher. Preceding her in death were her husband, Dan Allen Martin; three sisters and two brothers.

 

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Dan and Terry Martin of Martinez, Michael Allen Martin and Theresa Alviar of Hong Kong; 9 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and several nephews.

Obit - Helen Stamps

Helen Leone Paty Stamps, age 89¾, passed away March 17 as a result of complications following a fall.  Helen attended Duke University for two years, transferring during WWII to Agnes Scott College, where she graduated in 1945.  She served as a Navy Cadet Nurse in WWII for 16 months.  Her father, Robert Morris Paty, Jr., MD, was Acting Dean of Medicine at Emory and Head of the Emory Hospital.  Helen was born in Boston where her father was doing his medical residence, and was taken to China where her father and mother, Katherine Behenna Paty, were Methodist missionaries.  She had attended the Shanghai American School, Class of 1941, where she and her future husband, George Moreland Stamps, were classmates and met in the eighth grade.  Helen graduated from the Ward Belmont Prep School in Nashville, TN.

 

Helen and George, a senior at Wake Forest and former 8th Air Force B-17 pilot, were married in 1946 and celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary last November.  Their four children, Margaret Evalyn, Robert Fletcher, Thomas Paty, and John Belk were born in New York State where George was a graduate student in physics at Columbia University.  Helen taught the Jr. High Sunday School class at New Hyde Park Presbyterian Church for 9 years, and was a Cub Scout Den Mother.  The family was transferred to California, where Helen served as the Noon Duty Supervisor at Palos Verdes Jr. High.  Next transferred by Magnavox to Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, Helen served in the University of Illinois Personnel Department, in charge of hiring and placing all temporary help.  Transferred to Fort Wayne, Helen was Director of Social Services at Irene Byron Hospital.  In 1973 George was appointed Manager of Business Development at the Xerox Corporate Headquarters at Stamford, CT, living in Westport, CT.  Helen was elected Democratic Registrar of Voters for Westport, serving for ten years.

 

Helen first moved to Newton County in 1941, and lived in the Bishop Haygood Mansion.  In 1986 the Stamps moved back to Newton County, where Helen’s father had been the First Chief of Medicine at Newton Hospital, and where her mother had founded the Library and the Mental Health Services of Newton County.  Helen and George lived at Stone Lea Lake for 22 years, and for the past 3 years at The Benton House of Covington.  Helen had served as President of the Friends of the Library, President of the Service Guild of Covington, and President of the Covington Book Club.  She is survived by her husband and 2 of her 4 children, 11 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.  She is survived by son Robert Fletcher Stamps, a retired AF JAG Colonel and his wife Quanah Crossland Stamps of Arlington, VA, and by their daughter Sequoyah Britainy Stamps of Los Angeles, CA; by son John Belk Stamps and wife Kathleen Gerbracht Stamps of Oxford and their children Josie Behenna Stamps, a sophomore at GA State Univ., by Harrison Dillon Stamps and Fletcher James Stamps, at Newton High; by grandchildren Dr. Katherine Stamps Mitchell, PhD, and her husband Dr. Gregory Mitchell, MD, and daughter Helen Claire of New Orleans, LA; by Capt. George Belk Stamps, US Marine Corps JAG in Hawaii; by Elizabeth Margaret Stamps of Houston, TX; by Walker Paty Stamps and Carley Lynn Stamps of Dahlonega; by Christopher John Bonkowski, and his wife Kathryn, Attorneys in Irvine, CA, and son Maxwell and daughter Sloane; by Brion James Bonkowski of Manhattan, NY.


A Memorial Service for Mrs. Stamps will be held Friday, March 28, 2014, 2:00 PM, at First Presbyterian Church Covington with Rev. Dr. William B. Wade, Jr. officiating and interment following in Oxford Historical Cemetery.  The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM, in the church fellowship hall.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to First Presbyterian Church Covington, 1169 Clark Street, Covington, GA  30014.

Obit - Susan Clegg

Susan Clegg, 62, of McDonough, passed away March 17, 2014. She enjoyed knitting and gardening, was an excellent cook, and loved all types of animals. Memaw, as she was affectionately known by her grandchildren, was cherished by her family and will be greatly missed.

 

Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Glenn Clegg; daughter, Ashley Clegg, both of McDonough; son and daughter-in-law, Donnie, Jr. and Jessica Slaton; grandchildren, Tripp and Owen Slaton, all of Newnan; sister, Linda Stalvey of Albany; several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Gladys Kerbow

Gladys H. Kerbow went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 17th. Mrs. Kerbow was born in Porterdale, Georgia, on June 9, 1928. She worked for a number of years for the Bibb Manufacturing Company in Porterdale, but then went to work for the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta where she had a distinguished career until her retirement. Mrs. Kerbow was very involved at the Porterdale Baptist Church and later at Glen Haven Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School and serving on a Cooking Team. She loved the Lord, loved studying His Word, and loved her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman W. Kerbow; her parents, Charles W. Haggard, Sr., and Willie Mae Haggard; her sister, Doris Haggard Hatchell; granddaughter, Amy Rebecca Peeks; and nephew, Charles Nicholas Haggard.

 

She is survived by her only child and son-in-law, Donna Kay and Troy Timothy Piper of Porterdale; grandchildren, Lisa and Steve Long of Loganville, Beth Cope of Covington, Troy Ryan and Nikki Piper of Duluth; great-grandchildren, Matthew Adam Neely and Kayla Marie Neely of Loganville, Kelsey Rebecca Cope of Covington, Thom Piper, Charley Piper, Nate Piper, all of Duluth; great-great-granddaughter, Kymani Marie Neely of Loganville; sisters, Marion Haggard Hampton, Hazel Haggard Cordell, Charlene Haggard Bell; brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles W. Baby Boy, Clay Adam Bishop, III, passed away March 11, 2014, at just four days old. Adam brought a lot of people together in a short period of time. He touched many lives and will be missed by those who loved him. He was preceded in death by his Pepaw, Scotty May, Sr.

Carol Barfield, of Covington, passed away March 14, 2014, at the age of 73. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed cooking.  She had a special place in her heart for children.  Mrs. Barfield was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Barfield; sisters, Lois Allison and Leah Tucker.

Charles Thomas “Chuck” Cartledge, of Covington, passed away March 14, 2014, at the age of 52. He was an Elvis fanatic and enjoyed hunting, fishing and gambling.  He loved spending time with his family and traveling.  Chuck was preceded in death by his brother, James Aaron Bell.

Richard Brandon Killam (R.B. or Ricky) went to be with our Lord and with family who have gone before him on March 13, 2014.  An avid hunter and fisherman, R.B. loved living on the lake and spending time with his family and friends.  The family is happy to say he came to know our Lord and Savior in his last year. 

 

He is survived his wife of 41 years, Sheri Thames Killam; daughters and their husbands, Paige and Mark Boivin, Amanda and Daniel Cliburn; 9 beautiful grandchildren, Abby, Anna, Addi Ruth, T.J. Mr. Jeff H. (Mutt) Hiott

Mr. Jeff H. “Mutt” Hiott, Jr. of Mansfield, passed away March 13, 2014, at the age of 89.  He was the owner of Auto Battery & Ignition Co. in Atlanta where, until a few weeks ago, he had worked since he was 13 years old.   He served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II. Mr. Mutt was raised in Confederate Avenue Baptist Church and was an active member until six years ago when he and Lorene joined Mansfield Baptist Church.  He was known as the “Candy Man” and carried a pocket of candy wherever he went.  Mr. Mutt and Lorene were regular Saturday night diners at Buckners in Jackson.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Jeff, Sr. and Sadie Hiott.

 

He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 ½ years, Lorene; daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia Carter of Conyers, Jenny and Steve Wells of Florence, KY, Michelle and Joey Miller of Conyers; grandchildren, Steve Carter and his wife Beth, Mark Carter, Justin Wells, Amanda Wells, Kim Causby and her husband Kevin, Katie Wilson; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Liam, Connor, Kyle; sister, Barbara Watson of Clarkesville; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Lester Gill

Lester Gill of Porterdale, passed away March 11, 2014, at the age of 64. Lester enjoyed spending time outdoors and camping. He was a devoted father and grandfather, loved his family dearly, and he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. James Thomas “Tommy” Gardner, age 78, of Covington, passed away Monday, March 10, 2014. Mr. Gardner was a union carpenter by trade, and he enjoyed hunting and watching NASCAR. He cherished his family, and loved taking care of his sons.

Keith Grimes of Covington passed away March 9, 2014 at Newton Medical Center.  He was 29 years of age at the time of his death.  Keith loved talking on the phone and watching television, especially COPS and wrestling.  He also enjoyed patrolling the neighborhood in his wheelchair.

Clara Gaynell Doggett, of Covington, passed away March 8, 2014, at the age of 94.  She loved her family dearly and enjoyed cooking, shopping, exploring and spending time with them during the holidays.  She also loved her two dogs that were her constant companions.  Mrs. Doggett was a wonderful Christian woman and a great example to other Christian women.  She was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Covington for many years and a recent member of the First Baptist Church in Covington.  During the war she was a welder on ships in Brunswick, Georgia.  She then worked as an Atlanta Police Crossing Guard before going to work for Arrow Shirts as a quality control person.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Butch Doggett; daughter, Judy Doggett Gaylor; parents, Clara (Hardegree) and James T. White; sisters, Lois Bailey, Ellen Bentley; brothers, Bill White, Clifford White, Clarence White, Crawford White, Earnest White, Bud White.

Obit - Joseph Lawrence Stephens, Sr.

Joseph Lawrence Stephens, Sr., 90, of Oxford, Ga., passed away on March 3, 2014 in Conyers, Ga. He was born in Roanoke, Va., on July 15, 1923, and graduated from Jefferson High School. He received his wings and commission as a Second Lieutenant in the USAAC in 1944 and retired from the USAF after 27 years active and reserve service. He was an alumnus of Roanoke College and Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He taught flying for six years at Southern Airways School in Bainbridge, Ga., and married Jean Hinson in December 1954. In 1958 they moved to Atlanta, Ga., where he became an air traffic controller with the FAA in the Atlanta Center. He retired from the FAA at Hampton, Ga., after 28 years. After 20 years of retirement in Ducktown, Tenn., they came to live with their daughter, Dr. Mary Stephens Malone, in Oxford, Ga.  Mr. Stephens was raised in the Second Presbyterian Church of Roanoke, Va., and was a “cradle to grave Presbyterian,” having served as a Deacon and Elder in Georgia.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Mills Stephens and Mabel Walton Harris Stephens; his sisters, Evelyn Foster Stephens and Margaret Stephens Ferguson; and his brother, James Harris Stephens.

 

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Jean Hinson Stephens; daughters, Catherine (Rick) Rogers of Atlanta, Ga., Mary (John) Malone of Oxford, Ga.; son, Joseph (Anna) Stephens, Jr., of Yorktown, Va.; his sister, Emily (Jim) Mueller of Williamsburg, Va.; and sister-in-law, Phyllis (Harris) Stephens of Roanoke, Va.

 

A memorial service will be held at Gum Creek Presbyterian Church, 2700 Gum Creek Road, Oxford, Ga., at 11:30am on Saturday, March 15. Obit - Barry Scott Thomason, Jr.

Barry Scott Thomason, Jr., 27, of Covington, passed away March 2, 2014. Barry was a 2007 graduate of Mary Persons High School, in Forsyth, and enjoyed watching football and wrestling. Barry was loved by his family, and will be missed by all who knew him.

 

Survivors include his mother and step-father, Julie Ann Thomason and Joe Thomas; father and step-mother, Barry, Sr., and Lisa Thomason; sisters, Jennifer Thomason, Pauline Thomas, Stacy Davis, all of Covington; brothers, Joseph Thomas, Mark Davis of Covington; maternal grandparents, Luther and Johnnie Johnson; paternal grandparents, Claude and Doris Thomason, all of Covington; niece, Ebony Thomason; nephew, Jason Davis; aunts and uncles, Daniel and Patsy Simpson, Brenda and Dan Scarborough.

 

Funeral Services for Barry will be held Thursday, March 6, 2014, 6:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, with Pastor Brian Wardlaw officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 5:00 – 6:00 PM, and again following the service, from 7:00 – 9:00 PM.

Obit - Carlene Echols

Carlene Echols of Covington, passed away March 3, 2014, at the age of 66. Carlene was a faithful member of Newton Baptist Church. She collected porcelain dolls, and loved to laugh, have a good time and joke around with her family and friends. Carlene cherished her family, and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willis and Martha (Maloy) Whidby.

 

Survivors include her husband, Mike Echols; sister, Martha Mask, both of Covington; brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Kathy Whidby of Conyers; several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Carlene will be held Wednesday, March 5, 2014, 12 Noon, at Newton Baptist Church, 720 Jack Neely Rd., in Covington, with Pastor Tony Howeth and Rev. Reese Sanders officiating. The family will receive friends at the church Wednesday, two hours prior to the service, from 10:00 AM – 12 Noon. A private interment will be held in Zion Baptist Cemetery.

Obit - Anna Margaret "Ann" King

Anna Margaret “Ann” King of Covington passed away March 2, 2014 at Pruitt Healthcare.  She was 93 years of age at the time of her death.  Mrs. King loved crocheting and reading, especially her Bible.  She also enjoyed cooking, and will be remembered for her fried chicken.  She sold Avon for more than 20 years and was a member of the President’s Club.  Mrs. King attended The Church at Covington until her health began to fail.  She is preceded in death by her son, Mark Ronald Osborne; grandson, Jimmy Lowe; husband, Thomas L. King; five brothers and sisters.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Jo Ann and Donald Griffin of Oxford; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Janice Lowe of Peachtree City; 7 grandchildren; as well as several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

 

A Graveside Service for Mrs. King will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at New Covington Cemetery, with Pastor David Payne officiating.  The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, Tuesday, March 4, from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M.
