Obit - James Stanley Moore, Sr.

James Stanley Moore, Sr., of Covington, passed away April 24, 2013, at the age of 59. Stanley was a dedicated employee, for 40 years, at SRG Global. He loved his family, and enjoyed running, playing drums, fishing, going to the beach, woodwork, and being outdoors. He was preceded in death by his, parents, Sam and Inez (Harcrow) Moore; sister, Audrey Barela; and brother, Dwight Rutledge.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Christy and David Harrison of Covington; son, James Stanley Moore, Jr., of Covington; grandchildren, Stanton Harrison, Rylan Moore, Weston Moore; fiancée, Julie McCurry of Covington and her son, Trevor McCurry; former wife, Kathy Ray.

A Memorial Service for Stanley will be held Sunday, April 28, 2013, 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, April 27, from 3:00-6:00 PM.

Obit - Barry Lynn Dunn

With great sorrow, the family of Barry Lynn Dunn, announces his passing on April 23, 2013. He was the son of Samuel Smith and Lessie (Yelverton) Dunn, born October 15, 1927, in Jackson, Tennessee, and moved to Atlanta soon after his birth. He grew up in West End, attended Tech High School, and was baptized and spent his youth at Gordon Street Baptist Church. He was a member of what is now called the "Greatest Generation", and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1947, he married his loving sweetheart, Helen Sewell of Grove Park, and together they moved to Decatur, in 1952, to raise their three children. Barry was a highly respected baseball and football coach at Midway Ball Park where he taught his sons and many youth the fundamentals of both games. He continued coaching until his sons graduated from high school, and then went on to coach the Georgia Power Company softball team. He worked for Georgia Power for 42 years, and continued friendships with his colleagues which he considered family, long after his retirement. Barry was an avid golfer, and loved working and gardening in his yard. He was an outstanding husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, uncle, and beloved friend. He was well-known and admired by all for his humorous stories and quick wit. Barry was preceded in death by his son, Dennis Wayne Dunn; parents, Sam and BeBe Dunn; and his sisters, Norma Barden and Judy McCoughney.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 65 ½ years, Helen Sewell Dunn; daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Lee Durden; son, Johnny Dunn; granddaughters, Getra Thomason and fiancĂ©, Mark Sanders, Diana and Kevin Westberry, Lisa and Laura Lynn Dunn; great-granddaughter, Reese Dunn; and faithful, lifelong friends, Buddy and Peggy Howard.

Funeral Services for Barry will be held Friday, April 26, 2013, 1:00 PM, at First Baptist Church, in Covington, with Pastor Ralph Meaker, Pastor Charles Reynolds, and Pastor Tim Barnes officiating, and interment following in Covington City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, Thursday, April 25, from 5:00-8:30 PM. Obit - General Jackson "Jack" Carnes


General Jackson "Jack" Carnes, of Covington, passed away April 22, 2013, at the age of 87.  He was a family man and loved his family dearly.  He also loved his church family at LifePointe Church of the Nazarene. He had an Associate's Degree and worked as an Electrical and HVAC Contractor.  General Jack was a pilot and enjoyed flying.  He also enjoyed hunting and spending time outdoors with his friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Harley Joseph and Pallie (Welch) Carnes.

 

Survivors include his loving wife, Barbara Lavonia Carnes of Covington, GA;  daughter,  Diane Carnes of Molino, FL; sons and daughters-in-law, Harley Jackson and Sylvia Carnes of Newfoundland, NJ, Timothy Mark and Diane Carnes of Simpsonville, SC, Jon and Morgan Carnes, of Little Rock, AK, Keith Alfred and Susanne Carnes of Anchorage Alaska, Kevin Carnes, of Covington, GA; sisters, Pallie Raby, of Covington,  Thanna Smith also of Covington, Madge Roper, of Monticello, GA; brother, Clay Carnes , of Alabama; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for General Jack will be held Wednesday, April 24, 2013, 2:00, PM, at LifePointe Church of the Nazarene, 5133 Hwy 36, in Covington, with Pastor Wayne Rutherford officiating, and interment following in Covington City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church, Wednesday, April 24, three hours prior to the service from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Jessie Matthew Corley of Conyers passed away April 21, 2013, at Rockdale Medical Center.  He was 31 years of age at the time of his death.  Jessie loved his family and friends, antique cars, riding his four-wheeler, and fishing.   He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harold and Laura Corley, Doc and Jewel (Johnson) Coady. 

 

Survivors include his parents, Hoyt and Veronica Corley of Conyers; brother, Jason Corley of Oxford; girlfriend, Kim Mote and her children, all of Conyers; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

 

A Graveside Service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at Green Meadow Memorial Gardens in Conyers.  The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, Tuesday, April 23, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.

Obit - James C. Corry

James C. Corry of Covington, passed away April 16, 2013, at the age of 85. Mr. Corry was a veteran of the United States Navy. He was a member and Elder of Bethany Presbyterian Church, in Covington. Mr. Corry was a Mason for more than 50 years, and a member of the Golden Fleece Lodge #6, where he served as past Master in 1970. He retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation after 34 years of dedicated service. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann (Blasingame) Corry; second wife, Corine (Fleming) Corry; granddaughter, Jaymie Lynn Lewis; mother, Reba (Boswell) Parker; father, James Clinton Corry, Sr.; and his brother, Charles Williams.

Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Al McCoy of Austell, Lynn and Paul Lewis of Covington; grandchildren, Joe and Kelly Lewis; great-grandchildren, Brylie Nicole Lewis, Jaxson Bryce Lewis; sisters, Ann Boswell, Betty Jo Webb; brother, L.A. Obit - Brian Keith Ingram

Brian Keith Ingram of Covington, passed away April 16, 2013, at the age of 48. He retired from the United States Air Force after 21 years of service. Keith was a member of Newton Baptist Church, the John O. McCart V.F.W. Post 2938, and the American Legion, Post 32, all in Covington. He was an avid Braves fan. Keith was a family man, loved them dearly, and will be missed by all who knew him.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 26 years, Sherrie W. Ingram; sons, Brian K. Ingram, Jr., and his fiancé, Kallie J. Williamson, Brody K. Ingram; parents, Bill and Brenda Ingram, all of Covington; sister and brother-in-law, Tammy and Joel Henderson of Mansfield; mother-in-law, Bessie W. "Katy" Galloway; father-in-law, William C. Walls, both of Covington; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William C. "Cleve" and Nancy Walls of Monroe; and nieces, Cindy R. Walls, Kristy G. Walls, both of Covington.

Obit - J. B. Monk, Sr.

J. B. Monk, Sr., of Covington, passed away April 12, 2013 at the age of 90.   Mr. Monk enjoyed fishing, cutting grass and going to gospel singings.  He served his country in the United States Army during World War II and was a member of Almon Baptist Church and the American Legion Post #77.  Mr. Monk loved his family dearly, and will be sorely missed.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Fannie Mae Monk; parents, Arthur Dewey and Sadie (Crooms) Monk; and brother, Holland Monk.

 

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law,  Ruby and James Sweat of Eastanollee, GA; sons and daughters-in-law, J. B. "Jimmy" and Donna Monk of Covington, Bill and Frida Monk of Lexington, SC, Larry and Victoria Monk of Martin, GA; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Alyce Freeman of Covington; several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Edwin Lee Giles

Edwin Lee Giles of Covington, passed away April 10, 2013, at the age of 66. Mr. Giles attended First Presbyterian Church, in Covington. He was a friendly, caring man who never met anyone he didn't call a friend. He was an animal lover, and enjoyed collecting many things, but especially toys. He was excellent at trivia, and enjoyed learning the smallest details of how things worked. If one word was used to describe Mr. Giles, it would be, "Giver". He was a proud Republican who loved his country. Mr. Giles was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam Lee and Idele (Lewis) Giles.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 42 years, Janann Giles; daughters, Robin Giles, Christina Giles; grandchildren, Selina Giles, Emily Elizabeth Giles, Matthew Callahan, Brianna Martin; sister, Reigh Heislop; numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Giles will be held Tuesday, April 16, 2013, 11:00 AM, at the First Presbyterian Church, in Covington, with Rev. Dr. William B. Wade, Jr., officiating. The family will receive friends, in the Martin Fellowship Hall, immediately following the service. Mr. Giles' cremated remains will be scattered, in the Memory Gardens, at the church. To honor Mr. Giles, friends are asked to purposely and anonymously do a good deed for someone.

Mary Ruth Jackson of Covington, passed away April 11, 2013, at the age of 83. Mrs. Jackson devoted herself as a pastor's wife for 60 years. She was very giving, loved her family dearly, and especially enjoyed spending time with them during the holidays. She enjoyed working word searches.  Mrs. Jackson was preceded in death by her husband, William Jackson, Sr.; and her parents, Walter Lee and Annie (Freeman) Lanning.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Elaine Jackson of Louisville, TN; sons and daughters-in-law, Butch and Cindy Jackson of Covington, Charles Randolph and Linda Jackson of Cedar Grove, NC, Richard Curtis Jackson of Hiram, Tommy Lee and Teresa Jackson of Dallas, GA; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Roger Howard Dean of Oxford passed away March 31, 2013 at the age of 60.  Mr. Howard, a hard-working country man, was always willing to help anyone who needed help.  He had a varied employment history including the housing authority, carpentry, textile manufacturing, and auto mechanical work.  Mr. Dean will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

 

Mr. Dean is survived by his daughter, Sherry Elaine Page; son, Roger Thomas Dean; grandchildren, Ashley Kirby, Stacey Mimbs; great-grandchildren, Grayson Mimbs, Brantley Kirby, Aiden Woodbury. 

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Dean will be held Saturday, April 13, 3:00 P.M., at his residence at 1033 Hightower Trail in Oxford.

Obit - Mattie Malone Shepherd

Mattie Malone Shepherd, 81, of Covington, passed away peacefully at her home, April 9, 2013, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Shepherd was the matriarch of her family which she loved dearly. She enjoyed bird watching, NASCAR, watching the Atlanta Braves, cooking, and spending time with her family – especially during the holidays. In addition, she loved working in her flower garden and enjoyed her African violets. Mrs. Shepherd was an avid environmentalist, and often donated to many charities, helped the homeless, the less fortunate, and needy animals. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Shepherd; parents, Walker Thrower and Mattie (Saye) Malone.

 

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie S. and W. Grady Bryans of Newborn, Kathy S. and Wesley Johnson of Covington; son, Alan Shepherd of Newborn; grandchildren, Brian S. and Amie Bryans of Suwanee, Ashley Saye Hammonds, Chrissy J. and Kyle Hall, all of Social Circle, Merideth Bryans of Newborn, Melody B. and Justin Morgan, Michael and Sandi Johnson, all of Covington; great-grandchildren, Emma Grace Bryans, Beau Shepherd Bryans, Tucker Wallace Bryans, Ella Kate Hall, Macy Mallette Morgan, Kylie Grace Hall.

Obit - Marjorie Wilson

Mrs. Marjorie Wilson of Covington, passed away April 8, 2013, at the age of 78. Mrs. Wilson was a member of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, in Milstead, for many years prior to her declining health. She was a prayerful, caring, loving woman; who even in her last days was always more concerned for others rather than herself. She enjoyed working in her home and taking care of her family. Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by her husband, James Wilson; and her daughter, Audrey Lewis.

 

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Gary Knight of Conyers, Karen Lewis of Covington, Michele and Mike Carnes of Covington, Ronnie Lewis of Carlton; three sisters; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Carl Wayne Lewallen, of Covington, passed away April 6, 2013, at the age of 63.  He was a Tennessee Volunteers fan.  He enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing pool, and watching WWE wrestling.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Mark and Mary Miranda (Wages) Lewallen.

Hobert T.L. Davenport, 90, of Covington, passed away April 3, 2013. Mr. Davenport was born in Blue Ridge, GA, to the late John and Lula (Ray) Davenport, and moved to Covington with his family in 1927. He drove a gas truck while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. One of the highlights, of his military career, was meeting General George Patton. Before going into service, Mr. Davenport met and married Margie Louise Davis, and together they were blessed with two sons, John and Jerry. After Margie passed away in 1975, he married Minnie Lou Hopkins, in 1976, who brought to this union a daughter, Michelle, and a son, Chris. He enjoyed camping, and loved to garden and spend time on his tractor. He was well-known for his collards. Mr. Davenport was a faithful member of Christ Cornerstone Church. He had a great laugh, a beautiful smile, and anyone that knew him, loved him. His children and grandchildren loved playing jokes on him. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Margie; his son, John Davenport; and his great-granddaughter, Amanda Davenport.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 36 years, Minnie Davenport; daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Kenneth Watts of Covington; sons and daughter-in-law, Jerry Davenport of Covington, Chris and Kathy Hopkins of Neptune Beach, FL; grandchildren, Craig Davenport, Donnie Davenport, Marshal Davenport, Deneen Plunkett, Norman "Phil" Phillips, Celeste Davenport, Lindsay Noel Davenport, Cameron Davenport, Landan Watts, Lauren Watts, Alex Hopkins, Christopher Hopkins, Shanda Fish, Acey Spiegel; great-grandchildren, Adam Davenport, Kayli Parks, TJ, Scott, and Payton Davenport, Drew Plunkett, Hunter and Hagen Phillips, Taylor Loyd, Zachary Ray, Jaylyn, and Sidney Fish; great-great-granddaughter, Kenli Parks; sisters and brothers-in-law, Evelyn Bruce, Rose and James Byrd, Shirley and Frank Harwood; brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Mary Jean Davenport, all of Covington; daughters-in-law, Laverne Davenport, Carolyn Davenport, both of Covington.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Davenport will be held Saturday, April 6, 2013, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Darrell Payne officiating, and interment following in Covington City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, April 5, from 6:00-8:00 PM. Flowers are accepted, or donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association – Georgia Chapter, 41 Perimeter Center East, Suite 550, Atlanta, GA  30346; or another charity of one's choice.

Obit - Lena Jean Miller

Jean Miller of Covington, passed away April 3, 2013, at the age of 83. She was an avid Atlanta Braves fan, and enjoyed watching them play. Mrs. Miller loved spending time with her granddaughter and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Miller; father, Walter Bell; mother, Cordie (Smith) Bell; step-father, Rhodie Bailey; sisters, Emma Hawse, Erma Broughman, Beulah Martin; and her brothers, Averille Bell, Alvie Bell, Roy Bell, and Berlin Bell.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Jack Fullerton; granddaughter, Tara Pendleton, and her husband, David; great-grandchildren, Elle Farmer, Olivia Farmer, Remi Farmer, Taitley Pendleton, Rhett Pendleton, Devin Pendleton, Brooklyn Pendleton, Luke Pendleton; brothers, Denny Bell, Dalma Bailey; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

 

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Miller will be held Sunday, April 7, 2013, 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Kelly Brisendine and Dr. Robert Faulkner officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday, one hour prior to the service, from 2:00-3:00 PM. Interment will be held in Covington, Virginia, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Julia A. Porter United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 700, Porterdale, GA 30070.

Obit - Thomas "Bud" Russell

Thomas "Bud" Russell, of Covington, died Monday, April 1, 2013 at the age of 74.  In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.  Bud was a hardworking man who loved his family.

 

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Rachel Russell of Covington; daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Robert Rogers of Social Circle; Vickie and Mickey Kitchens of Conyers; grandchildren, Russell Rogers, Gracie Rogers; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jordy and Ralph Witcher, Jean and Tom Lutton, Sharon and Harry Sanders; brothers and sister-in-law, James and Dianna Russell, Steve Russell, Michael Russell; numerous nieces and nephews.

Richard Culpepper officiating, and interment following in Social Circle City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, April 4, from 6:00-8:00 PM.

Obit - Frances Waldrop Lazenby

FRANCES WALDROP LAZENBY
 

Frances Waldrop Lazenby of Mansfield passed away April 1, 2013 at Newton Medical Center at 90 years of age.    She graduated as Valedictorian from Forest Park School.  Mrs. Lazenby loved solving crossword puzzles, reading, and gardening.  She was an active member of Mansfield Baptist Church and Mansfield Garden Club.  She was also an excellent cook.  Mrs. Lazenby was married for more than 61 years to the love of her life, and will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many.  She was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas Lazenby, Jr.; parents Walter Loney (Boone) and Effie (Phillips) Waldrop.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Roy Allen of Bear Creek, NC; sons, Tommy Lazenby of Atlanta, Jeff Lazenby of Conyers; grandchildren, Katie Williams of Hampstead, NC, Jessica and Aleisha Rucker of Cleveland, Joshua Lazenby of Gainesville; sister and brother-in-law, Ella Ruth and Howard Hunnicutt of Roswell; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Lazenby will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Mansfield Baptist Church with Dr. Jeff Perkins officiating.  The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 – 11:00 AM.
