Alphia Green

Alphia Marie Green of Covington passed away Thursday, October 29, 2015, at the age of 86.To her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she was always known as "Mema." For us, the word is associated with someone who will worry too much about you, stay in contact through thick and thin, always offer advice, try feed to feed you constantly, will be generous to a fault, and who will have a house that smells like a fresh breeze. For us, Mema was someone who would listen, who would play with you, who would read with you, who would pray with you, who would sing with you. She would take you to church too. We all had clothes, and quilts or pillows that she made herself. She was never satisfied with any of them, though her work was masterful. Although Mema could be silly (and she was funny) and play with us, we all knew she was a lady, and she would never go out in public without putting on nice clothes, and fixing her hair and lipstick.

Mema was born in rural Douglas county Georgia. She met her husband, Papa, right before she graduated high school, and just as he was returning from the Navy.  They married in Cedartown, Georgia, started a family, and then later moved to the Atlanta area.

Shortly before her death, I was telling her how much she meant to me. She replied, "You would say that about anyone you loved. That's all this place is, we do for others, and they do for us until it's done."Mrs. Green was preceded in death by her husband, George Carl Green, Sr.; daughter, Joyce Ann Green Gresham; parents, Wyle and Ruby Reynolds; and her sister, Bernie Blanton.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda Hill; son George Carl Green, Jr.; Grandchildren: Windy Gresham Krasle, Joyce Hill Thomas, Kristy Hill Jimerson, Joseph Hill, Casey Green, and Caryn Green; 7 great-grandchildren: Amanda, Allena, Bailey, Max, McKinzy, Thomas and Rilyn; sister, Amy Bird; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service for Mrs. Green will be held Sunday, November 1, 2015, 2:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road in Covington, with Rev. Richard Culpepper and Pastor Mike Thomas officiating. Interment will follow, in Melwood Cemetery, at 4:00 PM, 5170 E. Ponce De Leon, Stone Mountain, GA 30083.  The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home on Saturday, October 31, 2015 from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM.
