Mark David Long

Mark David Long, 66, passed away on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, surrounded by his loving family as the result of end-stage heart failure. He had been hospitalized for three months and was initially approved for a heart transplant. Due to a series of compromising medical emergencies while hospitalized, Mark was removed from the list but never lost hope he would bounce back and once again become a candidate for a transplant.

Born to Cecil Long, Jr. and Mildred Gragg Long on December 1, 1953, Mark attended high school at Forest Park Senior High School, Class of 1971. It was here his love of journalism and printing began through working on the school newspaper. Soon after graduating high school, Mark followed in his father's footsteps and went into the field of printing. He was employed as an apprentice for Gus Russell Printing in Atlanta. The closing of Gus Russell led him to begin his 38-year career at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He served as a journeyman printer, assistant shop foreman, union steward and vice president of the union. Over his career in printing Mark witnessed revolutionary changes in the process.

Mark was truly a lifelong learner who loved a challenge and had boundless energy and interests. While working full-time at the AJC, he attended Georgia State University earning a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Business Administration, as well as a Master of Business Administration from Mercer University. Mark paid for every college class he ever took, never taking out any student loans. His interest in teaching began after earning his MBA. Mark spent countless hours preparing lesson plans for his business students at American Intercontinental University and the Art Institute of Atlanta. More recently, Mark attended GSU taking classes to become certified to teach high school French. He completed his practicum and was preparing to student teach when the Covid restrictions eased.

In conjunction with his job at the AJC, Mark also sold real estate part-time for Coldwell Banker and more recently was employed by Palmer House Properties. He found selling real estate challenging and enjoyed client interaction.

Due to his love of the French Language and Culture Mark joined the Atlanta Toulouse Sister Cities Committee in 1986. He served as president of this group for several years and enjoyed the comradery of its members. Before becoming ill Mark had traveled to Toulouse and several other French Cities.

In his twenties and thirties Mark could be spotted training for the Peachtree Road Race or a marathon. His love of fitness was contagious and he was in tip-top shape. It was not until thirteen years ago that he began to develop heart issues which are thought to be genetic.

Since Mark was an extremely compassionate person and believed in giving back he volunteered at Aid Atlanta, as well as City of Light's Homeless Program. A sports enthusiast, Mark loved the Atlanta Braves, the Georgia Bulldogs and the Georgia Tech football teams and enjoyed attended games regularly over the years.

His most prized possessions were his feline companions, Joey and Demi. He also made sure that the three cats who took up residence in his yard were well cared for and loved.

Even though Mark will be missed beyond measure he is now with his Heavenly Father and suffers no more. He accepted the Lord while in high school and tried to walk the walk by giving back to others.

Mark was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Long, Jr.

He is survived by his mother, Mildred G. Ivey of Covington; sister, Lisa Long Shelley (David) of McDonough; sister, Michelle Kathryn Long of Greensboro;  brother, Steve D. Long (Lisa) of Loganville; longtime friend and companion, Harry Prevatt of Sandy Springs;  nephew, Billy Campbell (Krista) of Greensboro; niece, Crystal Thomas; nephew, Brandon Moore (Haley) of Greensboro; nieces, Kahler Vandiver (Corey) of Rutledge, Haley Campbell of Locust Grove, Kinsley Campbell of Greensboro, Dylan Campbell of Greensboro; great-nieces, Addison and Kendall Vandiver of Rutledge; niece, Kaylee Long of Canton; great-nieces Scarlett Camacho and Stella Camacho of Canton; nephew, Jeffrey Long (Victoria) of Hull; and great-niece, Lora Long of Hull.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, 10 Glenlake Pkwy NE, South Tower Suite 400, Atlanta, GA 30328. Download a form from heart.org to accompany your donation. (1-800-242-8721)

Visitation for Mark will be held Friday, September 25, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell and Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, GA  30014. Due to Covid, we ask that attendees please wear a mask and observe social distancing protocols.

He leaves behind his wife, Rebecca Ruth (Crowe) Campbell. Harvey and Becky have two children, Jay and his wife, Kara, and Julie and her husband, Jarrod. Their pride and joy are their grandchildren, Ella Ruth, Emerson, Carley Coursey and her husband, Marty, Jr., Avory, and Millie. He is also survived by his three siblings and their families: Clara Mae Rutledge, Tommy Campbell (Gloria), Wayne Campbell (Johnnie), Sherry Dollar, Valerie Fields, Tammy Birchfield, Wendy Hughes, Amanda Brand, and Katie Campbell.

Born in 1932, Harvey spent his childhood days in the Porterdale-Covington area. He raised his family and worked as a diligent businessman. White Enterprise (Porterdale), Henson Furniture (Covington), Rhodes (GA, AL, FL), Famers Furniture (GA), and Killebrew (AL) include his places of employment.

Harvey was a member of Parker Memorial Baptist Church where he joyfully served in many capacities including deacon, member of the choir, and Sunday School Director for over 30 years. A lifelong patriot, Mr. Stell joined the Air Force early in life and honored the country he loved with dedication and loyalty, serving part of his enlistment during the Korean War. He was a proud man who tirelessly provided for his family. For more than 20 years, Mr. Stell owned and operated a cabinet shop and produced quality workmanship and exceptional service. Outside of work, he was known for many things; his ability to tell a great story, an engaging personality and warm sense of humor, and he was a skilled fisherman who could have easily turned pro. But, counted among one of Mr. Stell's greatest accomplishments was his role as family man; he was a devoted husband, dad, and PawPaw - always present and ready to meet the needs of his loved ones. He will be forever missed by friends and family. Mr. Stell was preceded in death by his parents, Tom Marion and Mattie Mae (Sams) Stell; as well as several sisters and brothers.

Mr. Stell's memory will remain with those he loved and cared for, especially the love of his life and wife of 61 years, Everine Stell; daughters and sons-in-law, Jenell and Robert Montgomery, Pam and Matt Greiner; sons and daughters-in-law, Robbie and Christine Stell; Rick and Debra Stell; 9 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Obit - Dr. Neil Shaw Penn

Dr. Neil Shaw Penn, 88, passed away at sunset peacefully at home on September 11, 2020. He was a loving husband and father, an impactful educator, a faithful parishioner, a pioneer in disability circles, a committed citizen and he never met a pun he didn't make.

Born in Parkersburg, WV, Neil was the oldest of five brothers. Despite acute polio at age eight and life-long crutches, Neil cut a distinctive figure around their hometown of Dunbar, WV. He was reliably in the thick of things from sledding downhill after a snowfall to making passes on the basketball court. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed the job of statistician for his high school and college sports teams. March Madness would find Neil tracking the action every day and frequently cheering on his alma mater Duke.

Neil earned his BA at West Virginia Wesleyan College, a Masters in history at Duke University and a PhD in history from Emory University. In his first years teaching at West Virginia Tech – decades prior to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) - each weekday found Neil patiently climbing two flights of the steep walnut staircase – the equivalent of 50 push-ups – to his assigned second story classroom.

In 1973, Neil wrote a doubly rewarding PhD dissertation. After extensive research and writing he came to Oxford College to teach and complete his doctoral degree requirements. During the final period of writing and frequent evening editing sessions with his charming, insightful and proficient typist, Carol, not only did he earn his doctorate from Emory University but meanwhile conducted an old school courtship.

In 1974, to his established and orderly bachelor life of study, teaching, friends and community, Neil added instant family. Following a quiet wedding beneath the crystal chandelier of the old Oxford College chapel, Neil and Carol and children, Jennifer and Evan, established home on Haygood Avenue. Neil embraced fatherhood - rising to the occasion as an incredibly patient, generous and loving parent.

A professor of history for over 40 years, Dr. Penn was considered by both students and colleagues one of Oxford College's finest teachers. The difficulty of his "map tests" were legendary among generations of Oxford students. His penchant for historical puns, e.g. "early in the 17th century, the Dutch had found the secret sauce and set out to Hollandaise much of the world", inevitably slipped into the notes of less vigilant scholars. Neil was honored with every teaching award that Oxford College offered. Students dedicated the yearbook to him and twice presented Neil with the Phi Theta Kappa Award for Dedication, Enthusiasm and Creativity in Teaching. The Oxford College Alumni Association presented Neil with their Outstanding Teaching Award, and his colleagues honored him with the Fleming Award for Excellence in teaching and also established the Neil Penn History Award to be presented annually to the top history student. Upon his retirement in 1998, students endowed a Library Book Fund in his name. And in 2005 Emory University Emeritus College presented Neil with the Distinguished Emeritus Award.

Foremost a teacher, Neil found numerous ways to impact the college beyond the classroom. He selected and hired several of Oxford's longest serving and beloved faculty and he was active in many phases of student life including advising the campus newspaper, The Spokesman, and student government and ever so many college committees. His regular, long, open door office hours ensured students found him always available to meet, to guide, to discuss, to explore. Over twenty years after retiring from teaching at Oxford, his students sought him out when returning to visit the campus.

Married for nearly 50 years, Neil and Carol were optimistic and energetic citizens of Oxford town. They worked actively on the Town Planning and Zoning Committee and served on the Oxford Historical Cemetery Foundation. They were involved members of Allen Memorial United Methodist Church serving on many committees over the years. They were founding, lifelong members of the Atlanta Post-Polio Association. When the Olympics came to Atlanta, Neil was selected to be a torch bearer carrying the Paralympic flame. A loving friend, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Neil took time to be present in the lives of family. He and Carol traveled frequently around the country and the world to visit and participate in the lives of his children, grandchildren, brothers, nieces and nephews. A truly wonderful listener, his steady presence, support, love and commitment to family was limitless.

Neil is survived by his wife, Carol Penn; daughter, Jennifer (Mike) Weston; son, Evan (Lisa) Hough; grandchildren, Joanna (Craig Dobson) Weston, Rees (Kara) Osborn, Elliot Hough, Erin Osborn and Abbey Hough; great-grandchild, Eliza; brothers, Jack (Gloria), Gary (Rae) and Paul (Pat); as well as many loving in-laws, nieces and nephews. His brother, Gene, predeceased him.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be planned at a later date due to the pandemic. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Penn Book Fund, Office of Advancement and Alumni Engagement, Oxford College, 801 Emory Street, Oxford, Georgia 30054. To give online, go to the Oxford College website and click on "Giving" at the upper right of the screen.  Click "Other" to indicate that the designation for the gift is the Penn Book Fund at Oxford College
