Emmett Childers

 

Emmett Childers, of Covington, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at the age of 93. A native of Lawrenceville, Mr. Childers proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II, after graduating high school. He continued to stay in the reserves leading him to serve the Korean War as well. Mr. Childers was a member of Parkwood Hills Baptist Church, the Lions Club in Decatur, the Elks Club in Covington, and retired from General Motors in 1976 after many dedicated years. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Frances Childers; parents, Emmett Childers, Sr. (Lizzie).

 

Survivors include his daughter, Vicki Rowe (Doug); grandchildren, Jason Rowe, Andy Rowe; great-grandchildren, Kensley, Emma, Eli, Cash, Rion, Sailor; sister, Wynette Thompson; brother, Richard "Ludie" Childers (Joyce); as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mr. Childers will be held Saturday, July 3, 2021, 11:00 A.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Lynn Williamson officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the funeral home, Friday, July 2, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.

Jeffrey Lynn Leach

Jeffrey Lynn Leach, of Social Circle, passed away Monday, June 21, 2021, at the age of 69. Mr. Leach grew up in Quincy, Illinois and for the last 20 years, was a resident of Social Circle, Georgia, and a member of Eastridge Community Church. He graduated from Missouri Baptist College earning his Bachelor's in History before graduating from Covenant Presbyterian Seminary where he got his Master's in Divinity. Mr. Leach was preceded in death by his parents, William Orville and Frances Maxine (Wallace) Leach.

 

Survivors include his wife, Karen Leach; daughters, Sara Leach, Patricia Leach; sons, Shawn Leach, Jeffrey Leach (Amelia); grandchildren, Khloe Leach, Landon Leach, Noah Crutchfield; brother, William "Bud" Leach (June) of St. Louis; as well as numerous friends.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Leach will be held at a later date.

Obituary for Pamela J. Britton

Pamela J. Britton, of Covington, passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at the age of 66. Kindhearted and patient, Mrs. Britton loved her family dearly - especially her nieces who she shared a special bond with and would do anything for. She enjoyed traveling and spending time at the beach with those she cherished most, playing board games, and reading. Mrs. Britton was preceded in death by her father, Bobby Gene Grizzle.

 

Survivors include her loving husband of 28 years, Alan Britton; mother, Joann (Boyd) Grizzle; sisters, Gina Turner (John), Lisa Payne (Kelly); sisters-in-law, Bevie Jo Marquardt (Dennis), Melody Fink (Russell); nieces, Jennifer Turner, Joanna Sims (Christian), Julia Turner, Jesse Turner, Erin Eichorn, Stacy Werly, Crystal King; nephews, Corey Payne (Brianna), Jeff Fink, Jeremy Marquardt; and great-nieces, Emmy Sims, Charlie June Sims.

 

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Britton will be held Friday, June 25, 2021, 11:00 A.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Drew Sewell officiating. Friends are invited to visit with the family one hour prior to her service, from 10:00 – 11:00 A.M.

Joe Allen Strickland Obituary

Joe Allen Strickland, of Covington, passed away Sunday, June 20, 2021, at the age of 85. Mr. Strickland had called Covington his home since 1973, was born in Arkansas, and raised in Mississippi. He loved fishing, with his favorite place to fish being Clark Hill Lake. Additionally, Mr. Strickland enjoyed going to the casino, specifically Fitzgerald's in Tunica, Mississippi. He received his heavenly Father's Day wish to be with his true love of 56 years. Mr. Strickland was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lauretta Strickland.

 

Mr. Strickland is survived by his daughter, Vickie Garrett; his sons, Bobby H. Strickland (Helen), Henry Strickland (Linda), Allen Strickland, Billy Strickland (Lisa); several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his brothers, Johnny Stricklin, Bill Stricklin.

 

A Graveside Service for Mr. Strickland will be held Wednesday, June 23, 2021, 2:00 P.M., at Eastview Cemetery, 1127 Eastview Road NE, in Conyers, with Brother Allen Strickland officiating. Linda Clark Capes Obituary

Linda Clark Capes, of Milledgeville, passed away Friday, June 18, 2021, at the age of 67. Mrs. Capes enjoyed croqueting, collecting porcelain dolls and dreamcatchers. In her spare time, she liked camping in the mountains, especially in Helen. From making homemade noodles to homemade pies, Mrs. Capes was a great cook. She loved her three dogs; Missy, Sissy, and Man-Man. Mrs. Capes adored her grandchildren and loved spoiling them. One of her favorite things to do was spend time with her family. Mrs. Capes was preceded in death by her son, Christopher Ray English; her parents, Homer and Sara Elizabeth Meyers; her sister, Patricia Kingsley; and her brothers, Don Meyers, Rocky Meyers, Rick Meyers, and Terry Meyers.

 

Mrs. Capes is survived by her husband, Roger Capes; her daughters, Sabrina English, Kim Johnson (Johnny), Sylvia Lopez; her son, Michael Jones (Kelly); her grandchildren, Fantasia, Jonathon, Tommy, Branson, Elizabeth, Selena, Levi, Eli; her great-grandchildren, Asher, Knox; her sisters, Joann Cox, Teresa Jernigan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Charles "Charlie" Kelly, 65, of Covington, GA, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 13, 2021.

Charles Sanford Parker

Charles Sanford Parker, of Mansfield, passed away Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at the age of 79. Mr. Parker was a hardworking man and enjoyed working on his cars and his 51 Chevrolet pickup truck, being outdoors, traveling to the mountains and woodworking. He will be remembered as a family man who loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Mr. Parker was preceded in death by his parents, James Howard and Millie Parker.

Ronnie Patterson Obituary

Ronnie Patterson, of Covington, passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2021, at the age of 78. Mr. Patterson proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for four years and was a member of Newton Baptist Church. He enjoyed camping in the North Georgia Mountains and the Tennessee Smokey Mountains as well as always wanting to try out new restaurants whenever he could. Mr. Patterson had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren and his cat, Rascal. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Patterson and Rosa Lee Bell.

Obituary for Terry Lee Aikens

Terry Lee Aikens, of Covington, passed away Monday, June 14, 2021, at the age of 57. Mr. Aikens always enjoyed being by the water fishing anywhere he could. He cherished his dog, Jazz. Mr. Aikens loved spending time with his family and grandkids. His beloved Daw Daw left a major impact on Mr. Aikens life, and considered him his hero. Mr. Aikens was preceded in death by his parents, Bobby T and Laura Mask Aikens; his sister, Nancy Lewis; and his brother, Charlie Aikens.

 

Mr. Aikens is survived by his daughters, Terri Blacksher, Lencha Rich; his sons, Eric Aikens, Joshua Stephens, Robert Lewis; 13 grandchildren; his brothers, Jerry Aikens, Robert Aiken; his sister, Linda Aikens Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.

Doris Jean Hothem

Doris Jean Hothem, of Covington, Passed away Saturday, June 12, 2021, at the age of 86. Mrs. Hothem was born and raised in Porterdale where she was a member of Porterdale Baptist Church and loved her community. Known by her family and friends as the "fiery redhead" she was always the life of the party and very outgoing who loved her family dearly. Mrs. Hothem was preceded in death by her sons, Dana Andrews, Marshall Andrews; parents, Hoyt and Thelma Grier.

 

Survivors include her loving husband, Earl Hothem; step-son, Eric Hothem (Stacie) grandchildren, Christie Robinson (Philip), Stacy Guin (Tony), David Andrews (Lauren), Aaron Hothem, Annberlee Hothem; great-grandchildren, Ethan Guin, Brayden Guin, Isaac Guin, Abbigail Robinson, Addie Andrews, Luke Andrews; sister, Hazel Cawthon; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Betty Stapp

Betty Stapp, of Covington, passed away Saturday, June 12, 2021, at the age of 76. A beautician for 44 years, Mrs. Stapp was sweet and caring, and always had a smile on her face. She loved spending time with her family – especially her grandchildren who were the light of her life. In addition, Mrs. Stapp enjoyed spending her vacations at Panama City Beach with her family whenever she could. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lisha Michelle; parents, Charles Demus and Hazel Virginia Mason; sisters, Beverly Diane White, Brenda Hutchins; and brother, Charles Demus Mason, Jr.


Survivors include her loving husband of 50 years, Benjamin Stapp; Son, Paul Stapp (Kristen); grandchildren, Caleb Stapp, Madelyn Stapp; Sister, Bennie Gail Brock; brother, Rodney Mason; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Dr. Leon Foote

Dr. Leon Foote, of Covington, passed away Wednesday, June 9, 2021, at the age of 87. From Footeprints on the Sawdust Trail to Footeprints on the Streets of Gold, Dr. Leon was a man of God, loved his Saviour, KJV Bible, and his family. He was loved and returned by his Saviour and also his family. To those that know Jesus as their Saviour we will have a glad reunion day. Dr. Foote was an evangelist for many years and pastored The Cedar Crest-Lucy Furnace Chapel in Mount Union, Pennsylvania for 25 years (from 1958-1984).  He was preceded in death by his great-grandchild, Chaney Corcoran; parents, Joseph and Jean Foote.

A Funeral Service for Dr. Foote will be held Saturday, June 12, 2021, 1:00 P.M., at Canaan Baptist Church, 5581 Salem Road, in Covington, with Pastor John Leatherman officiating as well as some remarks from other pastor friends. Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the church, Friday, June 11, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. and Saturday, from 12 Noon – 1:00 P.M. prior to the service. The service will be live streamed at www.canaanbaptist.org.

 

A Memorial Service will be held in the near future at the church he pastored for 25 years; now known as Cedar Crest Independent Baptist Church in Mount Union, PA. Date and time to be announced at a later date.

Melanie Fitts Blake

Melanie Fitts Blake, of Conyers, passed away Monday, June 7, 2021, at the age of 51. Mrs. Blake was an employee of Covington Credit and most recently at Lendmark Financial. She was outgoing and made friends everywhere that she went. Mrs. Blake will be remembered as a loving wife, daughter, mother, and friend. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ricky Fitts; father, Floyd McClure.

 

Survivors include her husband, Mike Blake; daughters, Katie Fitts, Tiffany Fitts; son, Josh Fitts; grandchildren, Elias Faniel, De'Ava Mathis, Carson Smith, Michael Langley; mother and step-father, Diane Thornhill (Thomas); sister, Susan Campos (Humberto); brothers, Floyd McClure (Lori), Tommy Thornhill; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Blake will be held Friday, June 11, 2021, 2:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington. Friends are invited to visit with the family, at the funeral home, Wednesday, June 9, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M., and again on Thursday, June 10, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.

Karen Jenkins

Karen Jenkins, of Oxford, passed away Sunday, June 6, 2021, at the age of 77. Mrs. Jenkins was generous to a fault, loving and kind. She had a fabulous sense of humor and enjoyed being outside, hunting, fishing, and in her earlier years playing softball. Mrs. Jenkins will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Logan Daves, Jr.; second husband, Larry Dean Jankins; son, Gary Lee Daves; parents, Ray and Mamie Ament; and three older siblings.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Sandra Sear (Douglas Rushton); sons, Bill Daves, Donald Ray Daves; grandchildren, Logan Sear, Kyla Rushton, Cody Rushton; great-grandchildren, Abigail Sear, Wade Rushton; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren.

 

A Celebration of Life for Mrs. Jenkins will be held at a later date.

Janet Irene Lane Obituary

Janet Irene Lane, of Covington, passed away Sunday, June 6, 2021, at the age of 93. Mrs. Lane was a member of Mansfield Baptist Church; she worked in the children's church and was a member of Joy Sunday School Class. Mrs. Lane was previously a member of Avondale First Baptist Church, where she worked in the nursery. Mrs. Lane enjoyed spending time outside in her vegetable garden. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Mrs. Lane was preceded by her husband, Otho Lane; her daughter, Janet Rebecca Knoll; her son, Rodney Lane; her parents, Rodwell Thomas and Bessie Rebecca Buchanan; and her siblings, Kenneth Buchanan, Bradford Buchanan, Clell Buchanan, Kirby Buchanan, Marion Buchanan, Anna Hightower, Naomi Clark, Eula Wallace, Vera Shockley, Geraldine Yates, Lila Fakhoury.

 Mrs. Lane is survived by her sons, Robert Lane, Russell Lane; her grandchildren, Kendra Garcia, Kenneth Knoll, Kimberly Moore, Robin Lane; her great-grandchildren, Kaden Knoll, Landry Moore; her sister, Irma Moore; and numerous nieces and nephews.

 A Graveside Service for Mrs. Lane will be held Saturday, June 12, 2021, 10:00 A.M., at Lawnwood Memorial Park, 1111 Access Road, in Covington, with Dr. Jeff Perkins officiating. Catherine Gaddis Grffin

Catherine Gaddis Griffin, of Covington, passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2021, at the age of 78. Mrs. Griffin received her bachelor's degree in RN from Dekalb College and then began her career with Dekalb Medical on the surgical floor. She later retired from the state of Georgia after 25 years. Mrs. Griffin loved shopping, giving gifts, and spending time with her grandchildren. She will be remembered as the matriarch of the family who was selfless and kind and loved by her family and friends. Mrs. Griffin was preceded in death by her husband, Michael D. Griffin, Sr.; parents, Conrad and Flora (Kowaleski) Gaddis; sister, Glynnis Hudson; brothers, Conrad Gaddis, Jr., David Gaddis, Michael Gaddis.

 

Mrs. Griffin is survived by her children, Mike Griffin, Jr. (Heather) of Monroe, Connie Roberts (Michael) of Milledgeville, Melanie Gates (Brian) of Monroe; grandchildren, Krystal, Tony, Maggie, Cameron, Courtney, Jessica, Jordan; great-grandchildren, Addison, Luna, Tony, Jr., Leia, Sophia, Emelia; sisters, Judy Pate (Marvin) of Columbus, Lorraine Kirkland (Ronnie) of Decatur; brother, Gaston Gaddis of Orlando, FL, sisters-in-law, Carol McNeil of Columbus, Glenda Holley (Jerry) of Columbus; brother-in-law, Byron Griffin of Columbus; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Griffin will be held Sunday, June 6, 2021, 3:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Mr. Greg McNeil officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the funeral home, one hour prior to her service, from 2:00 – 3:00 P.M.

Martha Lucille Arndt Obituary

Martha Lucille Arndt, of Covington, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at the age of 76. Ms. Arndt was a devout Christian and member of Covington First United Methodist Church. She liked watching her TV shows, and really enjoyed socializing with her friends. Ms. Arndt loved her dogs, "Precious" and "Prissy"; additionally, she loved her grandkids and children dearly. Ms. Arndt was preceded by her parents, John Albert and Ethel Lucille Arndt; sister, Edith Marie; brothers, Johnny Arndt, and George Arndt.

 

Ms. Arndt is survived by her daughter, Connie Smith (Timothy); her son, Jeff Smith (Lanta); her grandchildren, Sean Smith (Melodi), Jenifer Millermon (Josh), Jonathon Smith (Chrissy), Sadie Smith, Jordan Smith; her great-grandchildren, Peyton Smith, Brynlee Millermon, Braylin Millermon, and Bentlee Millermon.

 

A Graveside Service for Ms. Arndt will be held Thursday, June 3, 2021, 1:00 P.M., at Melwood Cemetery, 5170 E Ponce de Leon Avenue, in Stone Mountain.

Sherly L. Panico

Sheryl L. Panico, of Covington, formerly of Farmingdale, NY, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at the age of 74. Sherry resided in Covington since 2017 and was a graduate of Stony Brook University where she received her bachelor's degree in social work. She was a strong Christian woman who did everything in the name of God – she served the Lord and mankind in any capacity. Sherry was an accomplished artist and enjoyed playing the piano, violin, and painting nature scenes. She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Beverly Baraban.

 

Survivors include her loving husband of 27 years, Nick Panico, Jr.; daughters, Teresa Abril (Hugo), Valerie Panico, Natalie Darjania (David); sons, Nicholas Panico, Daniel Panico (Deanna); grandchildren, Grant, Brooke, Kailani, Bellamy Lucas; brother, Jeffrey Baraban (Jackie); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Graveside Service for Sherry will be held Wednesday, June 16, 2021, 1:00 P.M. at Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Drive, in Canton.
