Paul William Parker Obituary

Paul William Parker of Covington passed away on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, at the age of 79. Mr. Parker was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He attended Faith Elementary School, was a 1960 graduate of Fulton High School, and received his college degree from Upper Iowa University. After completing high school, he served six years in the United States Navy. Paul was a long-term listed member of the Salem United Methodist Church on Salem Road in Covington, Georgia. For years, Mr. Parker worked at Atlanta's Terminal Transport, and retired after 26 years of service at United Parcel Service (UPS). He enjoyed playing golf, and was a member of Honey Creek Golf and Country Club. Mr. Parker deeply loved his wife, family, and dog, Bindi.

Mr. Parker met his future wife, Sheri Stokes, in 1963. They were married in the chapel of La Grange College in 1966, and would have celebrated their 56th year of happiness in December. Both enjoyed traveling, especially in spring and summer. They particularly loved Italy; Scotland, where Paul played the old course of St. Andrews; and seeing the pyramids in Cairo.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul Henry and Betty Lee Parker; and his brother, Larry Parker.

Mr. Parker is survived by his loving wife, Sheri Parker; brother, Earl Parker (Linda); sisters, Deborah Parrino (Paul) and Selina Raeder (George); many beloved nieces and nephews; and dear friend, Doris Compton.

A graveside service for Mr. Parker will be held Saturday, at 3:00 p.m., October 2, 2021, at the Westview Cemetery, 1680 Westview Drive S.W., in Atlanta, with the Reverend David Cott officiating. Please plan to arrive at the cemetery office by 2:30 p.m. for procession to the graveside.

Wanda Ann Nelms, of Covington, passed away Wednesday, September 29, 2021, at the age of 66. Wanda was determined and hardworking. She liked keeping things in order and having things done her way. Wanda was an outstanding cook and loved spending time with her family whom she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Joseph and Irene Agnes Almand; brother, Walter Richard Almand; husband, Robert Hannaway.

 

Survivors include her husband, Jimmy Nelms; son, Troy Womack (Vondell); step-daughters, Jenny Horton, Kathy Nelms; grandchildren, Tyler Bystrom, Shayla Bystrom, Ellen Grace Power, Ashley Brown, Angel Nelms, Jonna Love, Michael Nelson, Dienna Jordan, Arizona Nelms, Destin Nelms; sister, Sue Evans (Mike); brother, Wilson Almand (Margaret); as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Wanda will be held Saturday, October 2, 2021, 3:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Janice Chastain Obituary

Janice Chastain, of Conyers, passed away Saturday, September 25, 2021, at the age of 58. Mrs. Chastain liked cooking and baking. She enjoyed traveling, especially to the mountains and the beach. Mrs. Chastain loved dogs. She cherished quality time spent with her family and friends. Mrs. Chastain was a loving mother, wife, and she adored her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; Evelyn Pugh and Eugene Johnson.

Leigh Jones Rutledge, of Covington, passed away Sunday, September 26, 2021, at the age of 48. Mrs. Rutledge enjoyed playing golf when she could. She loved traveling, and cooking for everyone. Mrs. Rutledge adored her family, and they were her primary focus. She was a loving wife and mother. Mrs. Rutledge was preceded in death by her husband of 15 years, Bill Rutledge; and parents, Stanley and Nancy Jones.

 

Mrs. Rutledge is survived by her daughter, Nancy Rutledge; sons, William Rutledge, River Rutledge; and brother, Dane Jones (Shannon).

Mattie Opal Henderson Obituary

The Lord called Mattie Opal Henderson home to heaven on September 26, 2021. Mawmaw, as she was officially known, was born February 9, 1919, in Pontotoc, Mississippi, to the late Birdis and Mallie Pickens. She married Rogers Henderson on December 22, 1944. He preceded her in death in March 1988.

 

Opal was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church in Covington. She was an extraordinary mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She was a great southern cook, an outstanding Christian and the heart of our family. She loved all old gospel music, cooking, and working in her yard. But she was happiest when surrounded by her family.

 

A private service celebrating her life will be held with Pastor Danny Sorrells and Pastor Ron Swann officiating.

 

She was preceded in death by 3 brothers, 2 sisters, and son-in-law, Randy Ainsworth. Survivors include one son, Roger Dale Henderson (Sue), one daughter, Sandra Ainsworth, of Covington, three grandchildren, Leslie Agovino (Frank), Bobby Henderson (Jennifer), Brandi Wilborn (Lamar); 7 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Childers Piotrowski Obituary

Evelyn Childers Piotrowski, of Brandon, Mississippi, passed away Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at the age of 52. Mrs. Piotrowski was always found reading and enjoyed doing arts and crafts. She was a loving mother and adored her husband and family.

Reginald "Moe" West

Reginald "Moe" West, of Porterdale, passed away Thursday, September 23, 2021, at the age of 54. Mr. West was a machine operator for Sweetheart Plastics, and most recently, worked in the concrete and landscaping business. He was a fun-loving man with an outgoing personality; there was never a dull moment when he was around. Mr. West enjoyed dancing, playing cards, and going fishing. Additionally, he was the grill master for all the gatherings. Mr. West was a devoted fan of the Golden State Warriors and the Atlanta Falcons. He also encouraged his grandchildren in their respective sports, cheering them on in their practices and games. Mr. West never gave up or quit believing in himself or his family; he motivated everyone with his never give up mentality. He had a big heart for his loved ones and would fight and put his life on the line selflessly for them. Mr. West was a devoted husband and cherished the time he spent with his sons and grandchildren. He adored his family immensely. Mr. West was preceded in death by his mother, Vera Brown; father, Lewis West, sister, Demtria White, and brother, Ralph Burnett.

 

He is survived by his wife, Shirley West; sons, Demarcus Jones, Reginald Jones (Cynteria), Antrevious Bryant; stepdaughter, Terryona Dennis; stepsons, Terry Delamar, Robbie Smith; 9 grandchildren; sisters, Anita Sheppard, Nikki Cox, Trellis Cobb, Casandra West, Felicia Jackson, Tamitha West; brother, Raymond West; and numerous nieces and nephews.

June McCrackin Knight Obituary

June McCrackin Knight

December 6, 1947 – September 23, 2021

 

June was born to Frank and Geri McCrackin in Sapps Still, Coffee County, GA. She was raised and schooled there in South Georgia until her teens when her family moved to Decatur, DeKalb County, GA. She graduated Avondale High and went on to Secretarial School. She married Jimmy Knight, from Prattville, AL, and had a daughter, Traci, in 1971.

 

June was a fantastic homemaker, gardener, and most especially, mother. She blossomed living on acreage beside her parents when the family moved to Smith Store Road in Covington, GA.

 

June had an inspiring spirit. She loved her family deeply and drove all the people that she encountered to be their best, whatever their endeavors might be.

 

June was always, always an animal lover, advocate, and caretaker. Throughout her life she rescued many dogs, and an innumerable number of cats, and a menagerie of wildlife. She spent the last years of her life living in "the woods" in Mansfield, GA. She reveled in life there on 40 acres of hardwood trees, creeks, and that menagerie of wildlife. She grew the most beautiful vegetables. She cooked the most wonderful meals. She baked the most perfect desserts.

 

She is loved by many and will be remembered by all as an impeccably strong, resilient, loving Southern woman.

 

She was preceded in death by her father, Frank McCrackin, her mother, Geri McCrackin, and her husband, Jimmy Knight.

 

She leaves her daughter, Traci Knight-Ramey, son-in-law, Edgar Ramey, brother, David McCrackin, sister-in-law, Judy McCrackin and companion of 25 years, Curtis Smith.

 

A Graveside Service for Mrs. Knight will be held Monday, September 27, 2021, 1:00 P.M., at Lawnwood Memorial Park, 1111 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Richard Culpepper officiating.

As a mother and grandmother figure to many, she had a huge heart and accepted many as her own family. Mrs. Shaw was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Shaw; parents, Ernest Lumpkin and Frances Lenora Canup; sisters, Linda Wilbanks, Betty Frye, Faye Almond, Dorothy; brother, Franklin Canup.

Teresa Marie Mosley Obituary

Teresa Marie Mosley, of Sylvania, passed away Tuesday, September 21, 2021, at the age of 62. Ms. Mosley was born in Savannah and a graduate of Screven High School, class of 1977. She retired from AT&T after 35 years of dedicated service. Ms. Mosley liked working in her yard and especially enjoyed cutting her grass. She loved her dogs and arts and crafts. Additionally, Ms. Mosley liked baking and perfected the art of making yorkshire pudding. Despite having a stroke that greatly affected the left side of her body, she persevered and never slowed down. Ms. Mosley was preceded in death by her parents, Jerry and Marie Mosley; and brother, Thomas Alan McCray.

 

She is survived by daughter, Tiffany Marie Kirk; daughter-in-law, Shelly Leigh Kirk; and brother, David Greenwood.

Sandie Albritton

Sandie Albritton, of Covington, passed away Saturday, September 18, 2021, at the age of 59, from complications of Covid-19. A military wife and a gifted math teacher, Mrs. Albritton touched the lives of many. She was a passionate educator and left a huge impact on the lives of her students and coworkers wherever she went, always reminding them, "MATH ROCKS!" In addition to sharing her love of math with her students, she was also an Advanced Placement Coordinator. As a National Board Certified Teacher, she taught in many states. In her spare time, she enjoyed making crafts and gifting them to those who would appreciate them. Her favorite pastimes included quilting and reading books of many genres. When Mrs. Albritton was not teaching, she spent her time with her family by her pool or at Myrtle Beach. She loved fiercely, lived joyously, and especially loved her dogs, Coco, Ziggy, and Milo. Mrs. Albritton was preceded in death by her father, Charles McMillian Todd, and her step-father, Floyd Johnson.

 

Survivors include her loving husband, Tim Albritton; daughters, Jessica Albritton, Erika Weinfurter (Mark); grandsons, Wesley Owen Weinfurter, Charles S. Louis Weinfurter; mother, Sue Johnson; sister, Lisa Cromwell.

 

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Albritton will be held Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at 7:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington. LaVonne Street Obituary

LaVonne Street, of Covington, passed away Monday, September 20, 2021, at the age of 82. Mrs. Street retired from C.R. Bard in Covington. She was a member of Newton Baptist Church and the Ambassador Sunday School class. Mrs. Street had a servant heart and volunteered at Newton Medical in her early years. With open loving arms, she cared deeply for everyone that entered her life. Mrs. Street cared for her husband and neighbors. She enjoyed spending time with her friends, sharing books, reading the Bible, and cooking for her family and church. Mrs. Street was a perfectionist in everything she did and was a simple and loving person with a gift for gardening, flowers, and nature. She liked watching the hummingbirds, deer, horses, and embracing nature from her back porch. Mrs. Street loved listening to her babies talk of their interests and activities, such as horse and cattle shows, sports, fishing, and hunting. She adored her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 26 years, Gerald Street; parents, Sultan Lavon and Georgia Frances (McCart) Wiggins; and sisters, Virginia Floyd, Martha Wiggins.

James B. Hutchins Obituary

James B. Hutchins, of Covington, passed away Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at the age of 97. James was born on a farm in Five Forks, Gwinnett County, Georgia on August 1, 1924. He served in the United States Army Air Corps as a bomber pilot during World War II. He was the owner and operator of Hutchins Drug Store, in Covington, which later became Medical Arts Pharmacy, from 1952 until his retirement in 2005. James also owned Hutchins Department Store in Covington, The "Hutch", of Covington, and The "Hutch", of Lawrenceville. He attended Washington University, in St. Louis, Missouri, and was a graduate of the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, and of Mercer University with a B.S. degree in Pharmacy. James left a long legacy of public service, including serving as an original member of the Housing Authority of Covington, president of Covington Businessmen's Association (later becoming the Chamber of Commerce), founding member of the Board of Directors of First National Bank (now First Nations Bank), and past president of Kiwanis Club of Covington, where he had been a member for over 50 years. He was a certified dialysis technician and a past member of the Board of Directors of the National Kidney Foundation of Georgia. James was a member of First Baptist Church of Covington, where he had served as a deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and superintendent of the young peoples' department for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Rebecca Alford Hutchins; daughter, Becky Hutchins Digby; son, Jimmy Hutchins; stepdaughter, Reneé Hansen; and parents, William Ralph and Bessie Jane Hutchins.

 

James is survived by his wife, Beth Meadors Hutchins; son-in-law, Dan Digby; granddaughter, Annie Hutchins; stepchildren, Karen Miller (Danny), Lee Meadors (Joy), Elizabeth Giannce (Rod); step grandchildren, Maria Meadors, Lindsey Miller, Jack Meadors, Caroline Meadors, Libby Hansen, Justin Giannce, Ann Marie Giannce, Sean Teichert; sister-in-law, Martha Frances Hutchins; and several step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews

Willie Lee Milligan

Willie Lee Milligan, of Porterdale, passed away Monday, September 13, 2021, at the age of 70. Mr. Milligan was a member of Conyers Church of God. A master plumber and electrician, he owned and operated Milligan Electric & Plumbing for 50 years. Mr. Milligan retired from DeKalb County as a Plumbing Inspector and had currently worked as Code Enforcement for the City of Porterdale. With his vast knowledge of building codes, he oversaw many residential and commercial construction sites across the Atlanta area. Mr. Milligan's favorite hobby was to use his training and gifts as a master plumber and electrician to help others in need. In addition, he loved spending his spare time in the mountains – especially Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Mr. Milligan was preceded in death by his parents, William Lee and Hazel Mae Milligan; sister, Reba Milligan; brother, Gary Milligan.

William "Willie" Mitchell

William "Willie" Mitchell, of Oxford, passed away Monday, September 13, 2021, at the age of 85. Mr. Mitchell proudly served his country in the United States Army serving with the 86th Infantry in Germany. He was a member of Newton Baptist Church and was an employee of DeKalb County for over 20 years where he retired as Senior Construction Inspector. Affectionately known as "Big Daddy" by his grandchildren, he was a complex man who lived a very simple life. He knew exactly how he wanted things done. Mr. Mitchell loved being outdoors whether he was gardening or fishing. He enjoyed canning and cooking and was known for his delicious Brunswick stew. In addition, he liked tinkering with small engines and was a jack-of-all trades. Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Mitchell; parents, Woodrow and Ruby Viola (Smith) Mitchell; brothers, Rex Mitchell (Barbara); Melvin Mitchell (Carolyn).

 

Survivors include his daughters, Judy McAvoy (Dean), Jan Barnett (Terry); sons, Julian Mitchell (Jane), Joel Mitchell (Christy); grandchildren, Austin Mitchell (Emily), Jena Mitchell, Amber Mitchell, Evan McAvoy (Katie), Melissa Conner (Jonathan), Jacob McAvoy (Hannah), Taylor Mason (Nick), Tori Mitchell, Kayla Martz (Jared), Kristin Barnett; great-grandchildren, Lily Kate Mitchell, Reece Mitchell, Walker McAvoy, Anna Paige Conner, Haddon Mason, Noah Martz, Olivia Martz; sister, Doris Loyd (Terrel); brothers, Robert Mitchell (Mary), Johnny Mitchell (Margaret); sister-in-law, Cynthia Canup; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Frank C. Smith, III Obituary

Frank C. Smith, III, a resident of Loganville for 40 years, passed away Friday, September 10, 2021, at the age of 69. Mr. Smith was the owner and operator of Advanced Plumbing Services for 40 years and a member of Central Community Church. He enjoyed being in the woods hunting and by the lake fishing. Mr. Smith also cherished time spent with his family and friends for a good time. He adored his children and grandchildren. Mr. Smith was preceded by his mother, Alma Jeanette Nasworthy; father, John Robert Smith; and sister, Anne Starnes.

 

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 50 years, Karen Smith; sons, Wesley Smith (Gisella), Matthew Smith (Kourtney Marcus); grandchildren, Alexander Smith, Juliana Smith; sister, Theresa Jones (Phill); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dianne Benke obituary

Dianne Benke, of Covington, passed away Friday, September 10, 2021, at the age of 76. Dianne was very athletic; she played basketball in high school and played softball at the shortstop position for years. She liked to travel and play the slot machines. Additionally, Dianne loved to read and watch her favorite TV show, Yellowstone. She enjoyed spending time outside in her garden or sitting on her porch watching the birds. Dianne adored her whole family and always tried keeping up with everyone. She was preceded by her parents, Elizabeth and Robert "Buster" Skinner; brothers, Robert Skinner, Terry Skinner, Bill Skinner; and sister, Martha Jones.

 

Dianne is survived by her husband, Donald Benke; daughters, Dodie Chupp, Shea Murray, Heather Keys; sons, Steve Smallwood, Don Benke, Jr.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

 

A Graveside Service for Dianne will be held Saturday, September 18, 2021, 1:00 P.M., at Lawnwood Memorial Park, 1111 Access Road, in Covington.

Courtney Hoover Obituary

Courtney Hoover, of Conyers, passed away Thursday, September 9, 2021, at the age of 43. Born Tuesday, September 27, 1977, in Sarasota, Florida, she was the daughter of the late James LaCroix. Mrs. Hoover was of servant heart; she volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and Covington Food Pantry. In addition to her volunteer work, she devoted her time and compassion to helping others. In times of relaxation, she found herself making stained glass and fused glass. Mrs. Hoover had a special place in her heart for cats. She was preceded by her father, James LaCroix.

 

Mrs. Hoover is survived by her husband, James L. Hoover; mother, Sandra H. LaCriox; and extended family and friends.

Dyanne Fountain Obituary

Dyanne Fountain, a Conyers resident for 42 years, passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at the age of 72. Mrs. Fountain was a former employee of Parker & Son Screen and Glass, and she retired from Rockdale County School System as a bus driver. On Sundays she attended Hyde's Chapel Baptist Church. Mrs. Fountain enjoyed cooking and canning, and when she wasn't cooking, she was doing crafts and crocheting projects. Mrs. Fountain adored her family. Mrs. Fountain was preceded by her husband, Jimmy Fountain; son, Matt Fountain; daughter, Krissi McDaniel; parents (father) and Vivian King; and brother, Butch King.

 

Mrs. Fountain is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan & Darrell Holbrook; grandchildren, Bryan Fountain, Taylor Fountain, Tyler Holbrook, Jordan Holbrook, Madyson Holbrook, Tristan McDaniel, Haley McDaniel, Jake Love, Kylee Love; great-grandchildren, Brayden, Cason, Payton, Riley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Levi Barnett Obituary

Levi Barnett, of Oxford, passed away Sunday, September 5, 2021, at just shy of 2 years old. Levi was a big prankster and was always messing with people. He had a great sense of humor and was always smiling. Levi was very handsome and looked good in every outfit he wore. He had a free spirit, loved everyone, and gave the best and biggest hugs along with a pat on the back. Levi was very active; he loved to play outside and enjoyed nature walks. He loved animals and his favorite snack was oreos; no matter where you hid them, he would always find them. He loved his mama and had to do anything she was doing. Levi was greatly adored by his family.

Benjamin Franklin Hilliard, of Covington, passed away Monday, September 6, 2021, at the age of 72. Mr. Hilliard was a proud patriot, serving in the United States Army. He was born and raised in Porterdale. Mr. Hilliard was an avid outdoorsman; he enjoyed being by the lake fishing or in the woods hunting. Mr. Hilliard shared his love of the outdoors with his son, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was preceded by his parents, Rayford and Mae Hilliard; sisters, Margaret Hilliard, Dot Hilliard; brother, Ralph Hilliard.

Gilbert Wayne Moyers

Gilbert Wayne Moyers, of Covington, passed away Saturday, September 4, 2021, at the age of 79. Mr. Moyers proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and was a member of Alcovy Methodist Church. He loved all sports, but he especially liked football, cheering on the Atlanta Falcons, and listening to his favorite singer John Conlee. Mr. Moyers is preceded in death by his mother, Sarah (McDaniel) Moyers; father, James Edward Moyers; brothers, James Richard Moyers, Daniel Malcom Moyers; and grandparents, Ellis Elmer and Bertha (Swords) McDaniel.

 

Survivors include his daughter, Patricia Renee Moyers Hutchins Darrigan of Fayetteville, NC; sons, John Douglas Moyers of Boiling Springs, NC, Ellis Wayne Moyers of Macon, GA; three grandchildren; sister, Mary Tobler of Social Circle, GA; brothers, Paul Edward Moyers, David Calvin Moyers both of Covington, GA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Clifford "Tip" Alexander, Jr.

Clifford "Tip" Alexander, Jr., of Porterdale, passed away Sunday, September 5, 2021, at the age of 78. Mr. Alexander attended Led by the Spirit Baptist Church and retired from Benton Truck Lines in Conyers. A hard worker with a heart of gold, he put others above himself, always helping those in need. Mr. Alexander was an avid Georgia Tech fan who loved his family, friends, and animals dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford, Sr. and Ilene Berry Alexander.

Thomas "Gene" Head Obituary

Thomas "Gene" Head, of Covington, passed away Wednesday, September 1, 2021, at the age of 85. Mr. Head was a good-hearted man and would help anyone in anyway that he could. He never met a stranger and loved to talk. Mr. Head loved traveling with his family to the beach and the mountains. He adored his family and was a wonderful husband for 43 years, a great father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Mr. Head was preceded by his wife, Erma Stapp Head; parents, Julia Frances and Simmie Marvin Head; brothers, Franklin Head, Hubert Shropshire; and sister, Carolyn Mills.
