Jeffrey Marcelle

Jeffrey L. Marcelle of Covington passed away April 29, 2016, at the age of 75. Born in Trinidad, Mr. Marcelle moved to the United States in 1967. He worked as a boiler maker in New York City, for 30 years, before moving to Covington. Mr. Marcelle was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. He liked listening to Jazz and Caribbean music, and he enjoyed gardening. Mr. Marcelle was a loving, energetic gentleman who cherished the time spent with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Theophilus and Rosanna (Marcelle) Streete; granddaughter, Akila Marcelle, and his sisters, Veronica Hessic and Phyllis Williams. 

 

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Madonna Marcelle; daughter and son-in-law, LeAndra and Steven Thompson; son and daughter-in-law, Ian and Caroline Marcelle; five grandchildren; sisters, Agatha Marcelle, Verona Thomas, Marva Sealey; brothers, Lloyd Streete, Charlie Streete, Kenneth Thomas, Patrick Streete, Desmond Streete; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

The Roman Catholic Funeral Rites will begin with a Rosary Service on Monday, May 2, 7:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington. Friends are welcome to visit with Mr. Marcelle's family Monday, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, at the funeral home. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, May 3, 2:00 PM, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 11524 Highway 278 NE, in Covington, with Father Roberto A. Orellana as priest-celebrant. The Rite of Committal will be held in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania. The location of the cemetery is pending and will be announced.

Mary Nix

Mary Nix of Covington passed away April 28, 2016, at the age of 72. She was a member of The Church At Covington for over 30 years, where she enjoyed fellowship with her church family and volunteering in all church capacities. Mrs. Nix, described as having a servant's heart, loved helping others and cooking for those in need. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, she cherished the time spent with family most of all. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Lois Harper; and her sister, Yvonne Cox.

 

She leaves behind her loved ones which include her husband of 53 years, Doug Nix of Covington; daughters and sons-in-law, Danita and Ha Doan of Covington, Sandi and Neeraj Bhardwaj of Alpharetta; sons and daughters-in-law, Buddy and Cricket Nix of Covington, Steve and Colleen Nix of Pensacola, FL, Jeff and Darcy Nix of Cleveland; grandchildren, Dougie, Jeremy, Tiffany, Wayne, Jacob, Tierney, Devin, Levi, Christopher, Brendan, Andrew, Connor, James, Mary Helen, Chandni, Priya; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara Witherington; brother and sister-in-law, Norman and Angelia Harper; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Nix will be held Sunday, May 1, 2016, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road in Covington, with Pastor David Payne officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Henry Hooten

Henry L. Hooten of Covington passed away April 28, 2016, at the age of 79. Mr. Hooten enjoyed working in the yard, shopping for outdoor equipment and going fishing. He cherished the time spent with family most of all.  A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his father, L.D. Hooten; mother and stepdad, Pearl and Hopi Harper; stepdaughter, Wanda Sue Mobley; sisters, Marion King, Annette Tuck; and his brother, Wayne Hooten.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Mary Lou Hooten; sons and daughters-in-law, Todd and Christy Hooten; Greg and Susan Hooten all of Covington; grandchildren, Kailey Hooten, Kinsley Hooten, Amber Profiri; great-grandson, Logan Mobley; brothers, Edward Hooten, Perry Hooten, Howard Hooten, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Lynette Forrester of Oxford passed away April 27, 2016, at the age of 82. Mrs. Forrester was life-long member of Corinth Christian Church. She was dedicated to her family, and she enjoyed cooking. A loving mother and grandmother, she will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Winston Forrester; parents, Chester and Lavonia Jaynes Johnson, and her brother, Gene Johnson.

Freida R. Bobbitt

Freida R. Bobbitt of Oxford, passed away April 25, 2016, at the age of 76.  Mrs. Bobbitt loved her church and taught Sunday School for many years.  She enjoyed traveling in the states and abroad.  In addition to being a gracious hostess, Mrs. Bobbitt was a wonderful cook who loved to decorate her home, especially at Christmas time. She cherished her family and the time she spent with them.  Mrs. Bobbitt was preceded in death by her parents, Jake P. and Louise E. Royster.

 

Survivors include her devoted husband of 50 years, Sidney Bobbitt of Oxford; sons and daughter-in-law, Hunter and Meg Bobbitt of Covington, Jake Bobbitt of Athens; grandchildren, Brittany Settoon, Elena Bobbitt, Kara Bobbitt, Grant Bobbitt, Trey Bobbitt, Rebecca Settoon; and sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and James Means, Sr.

Donald H. Long

Donald H. Long of Porterdale, passed away April 24, 2016, at the age of 81.  Mr. Long was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Nadine White Long; parents, Howard and Fret (Butler) Long; sisters, Levie Long Newkirk, and Doris Long Stevens.  A resident of Porterdale for most of his life, he was known for his love for animals.  Survivors include his sisters, Ozena Long Rodman, Alice Long Harrison; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mr. Long will be held Tuesday, April 26, 2016, 3:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Darrell Allen officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  Friends may join the family for visitation one hour prior to the service, from 2:00 – 3:00 PM.  Daniel Allen, Tim Dickerson, Wesley Dickerson, Mike Harrison, Danny Rodman, and Mark West will serve as pallbearers.

James E. "Big E" King, Sr.

James E. "Big E" King, Sr., of Mansfield, passed away April 24, 2016, at the age of 84.

Mr. King was preceded in death by his parents, James Jerry and Lucy (Odum) King.  Mr. King and Frank Stokes started Dekalb Pipeline Co. in 1960 in Tucker.  In the late 60s they formed Readymade Concrete Products, which later changed to Southeast Precast.  In 1970 this company was sold and Mr. King became sole owner of Dekalb Pipeline.  The company remained in Tucker until 1998 when it was relocated to Conyers and Mr. King stayed actively involved in the business until the late 90s.  In 1971 Mr. and Mrs. King moved their family from Dekalb County to Mansfield, where they still live.  After retiring in the late 90s, he continued to work daily on his farm until the last few weeks when his health declined. 

 

 

Survivors include his devoted wife of 53 years, Kitty King of Mansfield; daughter and son-in-law, Dye and Harry Galloway; son and daughter-in-law, James E, Jr., and Sandy King, all of Newborn; grandchildren, James Earl King, III "Ethree", Eli Galloway, Kit King, Ethan Galloway, Lillie King, Ezra King, Ella King; sister and brother-in-law, Julie and Bobby Timms, or Gattis, GA; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Robert Wesley Whitney, Jr.

Robert Wesley Whitney, Jr., of Oxford, passed away April 20, 2016, at the age of 82. Mr. Whitney proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force and retired after 22 years of dedicated service. He was a member of Oxford Baptist Church where he devoted his time as Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He was a kind and generous man, had a great sense of humor and was always the life of the party! Mr. Whitney loved his family dearly, enjoyed traveling and spending time with them and will surely be missed by all who knew and adored him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert, Sr., and Naomi (Crowe) Whitney.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Eleanor Whitney; daughters, Deborah Whitney and her partner, Elise Anderson-Kern of Oxford, Donna Rosales and her husband, Pablo of Jacksonville, FL; sons, Wes Whitney and his wife, Susan of Oxford, Richard Whitney and his wife, Stephanie of Jackson; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Carole Poyner of Columbia, SC; as well as a niece and nephew.

Obit - Elizabeth Gadilhe

Elizabeth Mullaly Gadilhe of Oxford, GA passed away on Wednesday, April 20 at the age of 90. For 67 years she was the loving wife of Charles Eugene "Gene" Gadilhe who passed away in 2013. Her family, the source of her greatest joy, includes her six daughters and sons-in-law - Genie and the late David Blough of Mobile, AL, Renee  and Shelby Childers of Sharon, GA, Michelle and Randy Sims of Collegeville, PA, Cherie and John McElwrath of Sharon, GA, Alisa Gadilhe and Bill Pfleuger  of Oxford, GA and Nanette and Jeff Watson of Davidson, NC -  her sister Alice Gadilhe of Highlands, NC - her 14 grandchildren – Holly and John Bailey of Charleston, WV, Lauren and John Hensley of Mobile, AL, Noel and Will Christian of Macon, GA, Nate Childers of Chapel Hill, NC, Alison and David Vause of Debary, FL, Leanne Sims of Washington, DC, Ryan and Nikki Sims of Collegeville, PA, Clay Sims of Collegeville, PA, Caitlin McElwrath of Seattle, WA, Lt. Elizabeth met Gene just prior to his service in WWII in General Patton's 3rd Division and they married 3 years later in New York City. Throughout their life they lived in many places. Their family adventures included tobogganing and fossil hunting in Utah, crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge when it was new, visiting the New York World's Fair in 1964, braving the cold in a sparse cabin at Yellowstone National Park when spring came unexpectedly late, catching necklaces and candy in Mobile at Mardi Gras and many nights stargazing and looking for satellites in the backyard. Elizabeth and Gene instilled in their daughters a love for life, a sense of adventure, and the ability to reach for the stars. They settled in Brunswick, Georgia where Elizabeth was named Georgia Homemaker of the Year by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. She enjoyed crafts of all kinds with many active projects and countless ones waiting in the wings; however, she was known as an accomplished seamstress who always provided seven beautiful new dresses for her daughters on each of their birthdays. Elizabeth was famous for going all out for holiday decorations, especially Christmas where her grandchildren made a contest of counting all the Christmas trees. After Gene's passing, Elizabeth made a home at Merryvale Assisted Living in Oxford, GA where she enjoyed making new friends, playing bingo and going for walks. 

 

A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. William B. Wade Jr., and her grandson Pastor Matthew Eugene Watson on Monday, April 25 at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church of Covington, GA.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Merryvale Assisted Living, 11980 Highway 142 N, Oxford, GA 30054 in Elizabeth's name.

James Hicks

James (Jim, Jimmy) Livingston Hicks of Covington, passed away April 20, 2016, at the age of 90.75.  Jim was a well-respected veteran of WWII, proudly serving as a first-class gunner's mate on Navy sub chasers.  Through the years Jim's family was always his top priority. He provided for them for 50 years by representing sporting goods manufacturers in the Southeast and later from the family cabin on Jackson Lake.  Mr. Hicks was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Mitchell Hicks; son, David Anderson Hicks; grandson, Daniel Lee Hicks; and numerous immediate family members.

 

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Beverly Hicks of Covington; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandy and Jim Stacy of Jasper, Debbie and Rick Gattoni of McDonough; grandchildren, Rob Hicks, Kim Caudill, Jamey Hicks, Heather Hicks, Greg Hicks, Jim Stacy, Jennifer Stacy, Brian Stacy, Chad Stacy, Robin and Tori Hicks, Rya Hicks, Patrick Hicks; 16 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; sister,  Charlotte Hood; brother-in-law, Tom Rowland; several in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins; as well as many, many friends and business associates.

Obit - Robert Barnes Stokes

Robert Barnes Stokes, age 94, of Covington, passed away April 20, 2016, just twelve days after his beloved wife, Sara. Mr. Stokes was a proud veteran of the United States Navy. He served valiantly for eight years - including World War II. He was a decorated veteran who earned several service medals, including the Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. In addition to his assistance in the sinking of a German submarine, prior to World War II, he was a mate aboard the first ship in Naples Harbor during the Italian Invasion, and was present for the attack on Iwo Jima and the first naval strike on Japan. Mr. Stokes loved the Lord, his family and his friends. As a man of his word, he was always honest and therefore greatly respected. Following his retirement from the Atlanta Fire Department, he worked for Ivan Allen Company as lead of the Stationery and Delivery Department. He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Sara (Humphries) Stokes; parents, Frampton and Janette (Hooker) Stokes; his two sisters and five brothers.

 

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Sheri and Paul Parker of Covington; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; as well as many dear friends.

 

A Graveside Service for Mr. Stokes will be held Friday, April 22, 2016, 1:00 PM, at Westview Cemetery, 1680 Westview Dr., SW, in Atlanta, with Rev. Joe Peabody, Jr., and Carol Standard officiating. Friends can visit with the family Thursday, April 21, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Rd., in Covington. Nicholas Andrew Savage

Nicholas Alexander Savage of Covington, passed away April 16, 2016, at the age of 38.  Nicholas touched many lives and anyone he met could feel the love he shared so freely.  He enjoyed hearing Dolly Parton sing.  The sweet tea his Nanny made for him always put a smile on his face. He loved his family and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. 

 

Survivors include his mother and step-father, Pam and Jimmy Hale of Covington; father and step-mother, Gary and Ava Savage of Greensboro; brother and sister-in-law, Jeremy and Raquel Savage of Conyers; uncles and aunt, Jack and CJ Hood, Doug Bruns, all of Covington; nieces, Megan and Katie Savage; as well as several cousins.

Clyde Andrew Tanksley, Jr.

Clyde Andrew Tanksley, Jr. of Oxford passed away April 15, 2016, at the age of 80. Mr. Tanksley was born and raised in Indiana, and moved to Newton County in 1987. He was a member of Eastridge Community Church, and drove a tractor trailer for 30 years. A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde Ai, Sr., and Ruth Ellen Tanksley.

Clyde Andrew Tanksley, Jr. of Oxford passed away April 15, 2016, at the age of 80. Mr. Tanksley was born and raised in Indiana, and moved to Newton County in 1987. He was a member of Eastridge Community Church, and drove a tractor trailer for 30 years. A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde Ai, Sr., and Ruth Ellen Tanksley.  

 

Survivors include his wife, Dottie Lou Tanksley; daughter, Jane Ellen Gray of Mooresville, IN; step-daughter and her husband, Debbie and Chris Nelson; sons, Richard Allen Tanksley of Greencastle, IN, Harry Frederick Tanksley of Arlington, IN; step-sons, Vincent Williams of Social Circle, Vance Williams of Covington; brother and sister-in-law, Charles Henry and Ethel Tanksley of Stone Mountain; numerous grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Ricky L. Bradford, Sr.

Ricky L. Bradford, Sr., of Covington, passed away April 10, 2016, at the age of 67.  Mr. Bradford worked for AT&T, in Conyers, as a Security Manager for 14 years. For 13 years he was a very active member of Potter's House.  Mr. Bradford was an avid fisherman who will be missed by family and friends who knew and loved him.  He was preceded in death by his parents, John Pink and Nellie Kate (Lindsey) Bradford. 

 

Survivors include his wife, Ann Bradford; daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Dallas Criswell; son and daughter-in-law, Ricky, Jr., and Ginger Bradford, all of Covington; grandchildren, Lindsey Bradford Flores, Lucas Bradford, Destiny Criswell, Brandon Criswell, Preston Criswell; 4 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Herman and Maggie Bradford, Jerry and Joyce Bradford, all of Covington; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mr. Bradford will be held Wednesday, April 13, 2016, 2:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, Covington, with Dr. Jerry Patterson, Bishop of Faith Tabernacle UPC of Conyers, and Pastor Ricky L. Bradford, Jr., of The Potter's House Pentecostal Church in Covington officiating.  Interment will follow in Porterdale Baptist Cemetery, Highway 81, in Porterdale.  Friends may join the family for visitation Tuesday, April 12, at the funeral home, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.

Carol Winters

Carol Winters of Oxford passed away April 9, 2016, at the age of 69. Mrs. Winters retired in 2013, from Newton Medical Center after 20 years of service. She was a very adventurous lady, enjoying the outdoors and exploring nature. In addition, she was very active with the Georgia Canoeing Association, and she cherished the time spent with her daughter, camping and kayaking. Mrs. Winters and her sister, always enjoyed their weekly discussions after watching, Joyce Myers Ministry and In Touch, with Dr. Charles Stanley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Wayne Winters; parents, Grant W. and Dortha L. Bullock; and sister, Gloria Jerome.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Kelly Harbac of Oxford; sister, Donna Field of Owego, NY; brother and sister-in-law, Ricky and Bonnie Bullock of Tioga Center, NY, as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Winters will be held Tuesday, April 12, 2016, 4:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road in Covington, with Dr. Adam Cooper officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends may join the family for visitation two hours prior to the service from 2:00 – 4:00 PM. Sara Stokes

Sara Humphries Stokes of Covington passed away April 8, 2016, at the age of 94. Mrs. Stokes primary focus in life was the Lord, her church, her family and friends. A lifelong Methodist, she was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, and she taught the Otis Nixon Sunday School Class. She was employed by Fulton High School for many years as a secretary and later as a receptionist at King's Bridge Retirement Home in Atlanta. In previous years, she enjoyed teaching the middle school students at Glen Haven United Methodist Church in Decatur. Mrs. Stokes was preceded in death by her parents, James Chester and Nettie Rich Crumbley Humphries.

 

Survivors include her husband of 72 years, Robert (Bob) Stokes; daughter and son-in-law, Sheri and Paul Parker of Covington, as well as several cousins, a host of nieces and nephews and many friends.

 

A Graveside Service for Mrs. Stokes will be held Monday, April 11, 2016, 1:00 PM, at The Westview Cemetery, 1680 Westview Drive SW, Atlanta, GA 30310, with Rev. Joe Peabody, Jr., and Carol Standard officiating. Friends are welcome to join the family for visitation Sunday, April 10, 2016, from 3:00 – 6:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road in Covington. James W. Chapman, Jr.

John W. Chapman, Sr., of Covington, passed away April 5, 2016, at the age of 85.  Mr. Chapman retired from Ford Motor Company after 32 years of service.  He was a member of Covington American Legion and had been a member of the Church at Covington for 25 years.  Mr. Chapman was preceded in death by his first wife, Geneva Chapman; second wife, Mary Elizabeth Chapman; parents, Edgar Lee and Corine (Hooten) Chapman; and sister, Vernie Dyer. 

 

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, John, Jr. and Tonya Chapman of Barnesville,   Charles and Gloria Chapman of Covington, A.W. "Tony" and Jill Chapman of Newborn; 6 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Malinda Chapman of Covington; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Annie Lou Purkey

Annie Lou Purkey of Covington, passed away April 3, 2016 at the age of 97.  Mrs. Purkey, a resident of Covington since 1953, enjoyed gardening and will be remembered as a great cook.  She was a loving mother and mother-in-law, and will be missed by all who knew her.  Mrs. Purkey was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, David Arley Purkey; parents, Emory and Gussie (Baker) McCart; sisters, Ruth Ewing, Catherine McClain; and brother, Edgar McCart.  Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, David and Susan Purkey of Covington; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

CPO Charles E. Otti

CPO Charles E. Otti of Greensboro, passed away April 1, 2016, at the age of 74.  Mr. Otti proudly served his country for 20 years in the U.S. Navy before retiring.  In addition, he retired from General Mills after 8 years of service.  He enjoyed gardening and loved fishing with his friend, Earl, on the pontoon boat. Mr. Otti loved playing darts with his life-long friend, Jimmy Drakos, and the dart team.  He was a member of Del Webb's Veterans Club and a life-long member of the American Legion.  Mr. Otti was an avid card player of Euche, Canasta, and Pinochle.  He had breakfast every Monday at Huddle House with ROMEO (Retired Old Men Eating Out).  Mr. Otti loved reading war novels.  He cherished the time he spent with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Mr. Otti was preceded in death by his first wife, Nell Otti; and his parents Charles Leo and Dorothy (Kerr) Otti.

 

Survivors include his wife, Bette J. Otti of Greensboro; daughters and sons-in-law, Julia and Troy Janda, Marsha and Mike Skiles all of Jacksonville, FL; step-daughters, Debi Presley and husband, Tony, of Lawrenceville, Deanna Rich and her husband, Ray, of British Columbia, Anita Barlow of Pocahontas, AR; Donna Jean Robinson and her husband, James, of Panama City, FL, Vicki Nelms of Henderson, NV; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara Williams and her husband, Griz, of Canyon Lake, TX; brothers, James Ross Otti of San Antonio, TX, George Michael Otti of Canyon Lake, TX; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

 

A Funeral Service for Mr. Otti will be held Saturday, April 9, 2016, 11:00 AM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington. Entombment will follow with full military honors in Memory Chapel Mausoleum at Lawnwood Memorial Park with members of the Duluth American Legion serving as honorary pallbearers.  Friends may join the family for visitation Friday, April 8, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the funeral home.  Flowers are accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Georgia War Veterans Home, 2249 Vinson Highway, Milledgeville, GA  31061.

Theresa Daniel

Theresa Daniel of Covington, passed away April 1, 2016 at the age of 64.  Mrs. Daniel was a great cook and will be remembered for the delicious cornbread she made.  She enjoyed spur-of-the-moment traveling with her husband.  Mrs. Daniel loved the Lord and listening to southern gospel music and cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Daniel was preceded in death by her daughter, Wetona Daniel; great-grandson, Skyler Keller; parents, Robert and Lois (Burke) Derrick; and sister, Deborah Beale.
