Michael Asaro

Michael Asaro of Newborn, passed away July 30, 2017, at 56 years of age.  A native of Newton, Massachusetts, Mr. Asaro moved to Georgia in 1996, where he worked for Pratt Industries for 20 years as an 'over the road' driver.  Mr. Asaro enjoyed riding his motorcycle and doing charity benefits with his biker friends.  He cherished the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. Mr. Asaro was preceded in death by his parents, Ignatius Frank and Angelina (Gueilli) Asaro; and brother-in-law, John SanSoucie.

 

Survivors include his devoted wife of 33 years, Dawn Asaro of  Newborn; sons, Michael Anthony Asaro and his wife, Felicia, Nicholas Joseph Asaro of Newborn, and his fiancĂ©, Marinda Poindexter; grandchildren, Nichole Hays Asaro, Tori Rose Asaro, Krym-Kyrm Asaro; sisters, Sandra SanSoucie, Paula Lawrence and her husband, Jerry, all of Framingham, MA, Francesca Curran and her husband, Brendon, of Franklin, MA; brother, Frank Asaro and his wife, Donna,  of Framingham, MA; mother-in-law, Cassandra Hanright of Newborn; sister-in-law, Terri Honeycutt and her husband, Shannon of Mansfield; Goddaughter, Emily Lawrence Coppellotti; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Grace Rogers Phillips, of Covington, passed away July 28, 2017, at 91 years of age. Mrs. Phillips was a graduate of the University of Georgia and an active member of Oxford Baptist Church. She volunteered for various civic organizations and charities, and was the oldest member of the Pilot Club in Covington, serving for over 30 years. Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her loving husband of 40 years, Edgar J. Phillips; and parents, George Walton and Maxie (Hodges) Rogers.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Cynthia (Cindy) Phillips Bassani of Berea, OH; son, James Walton Phillips of Oxford; grandchildren, Philip Bassani, Luciano Bassani; sisters-in-law; Sara Phillips Morgan, Maxine B. Phillips; nieces, Nan Odom Knowles, Susan Rogers Broyles, Elaine Bruce Pruitt; nephews, W. Jones Phillips, Stephen P. Morgan, Randall J. Phillips; as well as several great-nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Phillips will be held Tuesday, August 1, 2017, 2:00 PM, at Oxford Baptist Church, 305 Emory Street, in Oxford, with Rev. Andy Brown and Dr. Alan Posey officiating. Merle Eugenia Andrews, of Covington, passed away July 26, 2017, at 82 years of age. Mrs. Andrews, affectionately known as "Mom", moved from Trinidad to the United States over 20 years ago. Before moving from Trinidad, she served as church deacon and WOW president at Fyzabad Open Bible Church. Mrs. Andrews currently attended First Baptist of Conyers. She will be remembered as a friend to many, as well as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mrs. Andrews was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Randolph Vincent Andrews; daughter, Jacqueline Ramnarine; and parents, George and Emelda (Canniegieter) Best.

 

Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Cheryl Ann and Stephen Waldropt of Trinidad, Janice Lezama of Birmingham, England; sons and daughters-in-law, Rawle and Yvette Andrews of Covington, André Anthony and Carol Andrews of Doral, FL; Glen and Juliet Andrews of Covington; 26 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Joanie Best and Michelle Best, both of Trinidad.

Harold Stoltz of Covington, passed away July 26, 2017, at 75 years of age. Mr. Stoltz, a veteran of the United States Army, was employed with AT&T for over 30 years. Spending time with family, especially his grandchildren, brought him great joy. An avid sports fan, Mr. Stoltz cheered on the Atlanta Braves, as well as his football teams - Penn State, Auburn, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also enjoyed traveling. Mr. Stoltz was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Alice (Nagle) Stoltz; sisters, Mary Frederick, Gloria Hurliman, Alice Smith; brothers, Herbert Stoltz and Eugene Stoltz.

Dianne "Dede" Thompson of Oxford, passed away July 25, 2017, at 57 years of age. Dede loved Jesus and cherished spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She shared her love of swimming by teaching others to swim. Dede loved watching her kids play sports over the years, and was an avid Braves fan. Chipper Jones was her favorite player! She enjoyed listening to classic rock and country music. Dede was preceded in death by her mother and step-father, Troy and Yvonne Letchworth; and father, John Frances Miller.

Ella Jacqulin Hartley of Covington, died July 25, 2017, at 64 years of age.  Mrs. Hartley was a resident of Newton County for more than 35 years. For 10 years, she worked as a Lab Technician at Bibb Manufacturing Company, where she enjoyed selling Avon products to her co-workers.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack, Jr., and Katherine Aurelia (Arrowsmith) Kirksey; sisters, Lois Allison, Leah Rouse, Carol Barfield, and baby sister, Twanna Kirksey.

 

Survivors include her loving husband of 27 years, Bobby Hartley; sisters, Gloria Breedwell, Laverne Payne; brothers, Bobby Kirksey, Glenn Kirksey; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary C. Allen, of Covington, passed away July 23, 2017, at 83 years of age.  A member of Newborn First Baptist Church, Mrs. Allen worked at Bruno's for 8 years, before starting a new career at Kroger, where she worked as a deli clerk.  One of her favorite pastimes was playing bingo.  Mrs. Allen will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 46 years, William (Bill) Allen; parents, Carol Leroy and Christina (Natheny) Allen; son-in-law, Jerry McDonald; as well has all of her siblings.

 

Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Janett McDonald of Oxford, Jenine and Ronald Webb of Douglasville, Tammy Allen of Griffin; son and daughter-in-law, Tim Allen of Wadsworth, OH; grandchildren, Jeremy Howard, Brandon Crockett, Patricia Daniells, Zachary Allen, Ashley Allen, Spencer Allen, Carter Allen, Marissa Allen; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Beverly Parkes

Beverly Duckett Parkes of Covington, passed away July 17, 2017, at 65 years of age.  Born to Richard Lee and Nellie Ruth (Hyatt) Duckett, who have preceded her in death, Ms. Parkes was a member of CrossRoads Baptist Church in Social Circle, as well as Porterdale Girls Reconnect.  She was known for her baking and cooking skills as well as her amazing gift as a caregiver.  Armed with a heart of gold and a wonderful sense of humor, Ms. Parkes could light up any room she entered.  Her grandchildren were the center of her world and she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.  Ms. Parkes was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Wayne Duckett, Gary Duckett.

Melvin H. Vaughn of Covington, passed away July 17, 2017, at 84 years of age.  Mr. Vaughn proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and from Madison Industries with over 30 years of service.  Of the Pentecostal faith, Mr. Vaughn enjoyed singing and playing the guitar.  He loved his family and cherished the time spent with them.  Mr. Vaughn was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma (Ballard) Vaughn; and his parents, Howard and Mary (Thomas) Vaughn.

Robert Bell of Conyers, passed away July 13, 2017, at 78 years of age. Mr. Bell, a veteran of the United States Air Force, retired from Lithonia Lighting after 30 plus years of service. He was a member of Oxford Baptist Church and very active in his Sunday School class. An all-around sports fan, Mr. Bell especially liked baseball, even coaching his sons during their youth. When not spending time with family, he could be found playing golf, or hitting up the local Waffle House. Mr. Bell was preceded in death by his infant baby girl, Jennifer Lynne Bell; parents, James F. and Ora (Robinson) Bell; sister, Janet Williams.

Terry P. Cadwell of Conyers, passed away July 5, 2017, at 74 years of age. Mr. Cadwell was a veteran of the United States Air Force, and retired as a superintendent with Beers Construction Company. A member of Heritage Hills Baptist Church, he was a man of faith who stood for strong family values. To those who knew him, Mr. Cadwell was a "true gentleman" with an infectious sense of humor. Additionally, he was an avid fan of the Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Braves, and Georgia Bulldogs, but mostly enjoyed cheering on his children and grandchildren. Mr. Cadwell was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip Thelene and Louie Miriam (Bundy) Cadwell.

Bill Dickson of Covington, passed away July 5, 2017, at the age of 70. Bestowed with the voice of an angel, Mr. Dickson ministered to others through music. He sang bass as a member of a gospel trio, aptly named, "The Gospel Rangers". Social in nature and known to have a heart of gold, Mr. Dickson also possessed a comedic wit that was oftentimes sarcastic, yet endearing. He was a loving family man with a strong work ethic - always providing for his loved ones. Mr. Dickson was preceded in death by his son, David Walden; parents, James and Gladys (Boyd) Dickson; one sister; and four brothers.

Bill Dickson of Covington, passed away July 5, 2017, at the age of 70. Bestowed with the voice of an angel, Mr. Dickson ministered to others through music. He sang bass as a member of a gospel trio, aptly named, "The Gospel Rangers". Social in nature and known to have a heart of gold, Mr. Dickson also possessed a comedic wit that was oftentimes sarcastic, yet endearing. He was a loving family man with a strong work ethic - always providing for his loved ones. Mr. Dickson was preceded in death by his son, David Walden; parents, James and Gladys (Boyd) Dickson; one sister; and four brothers.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Madalyn Dickson; daughters, Shanda O'Bannon, Jeanne Walden, Lori Gaylor, Amanda Dickson; son, Jerry A. Walden, Jr.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Donna Cook; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements for Mr. Dickson are pending and will be announced as soon as that information is available.

Rev. Hugo M. Davis, Sr.

Rev. Hugo M. Davis, Jr., of Covington passed away July 4, 2017, at 88 years of age. Rev. Davis earned his Bachelor's Degree from Mercer University, and in 1965, graduated from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he earned his Master of Divinity degree. For four years, Rev. Davis served as Senior Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Covington. Rev. Davis was Director of Newton County Day Training Center, later known as Alternative Industries in Covington, for 21 years. Deeply rooted in his Christian faith, he was a member of First Baptist Church in Covington for over 35 years. During his time with the church, he was part of Murphy's Gang Sunday School class. Being civic-minded, Rev. Davis volunteered his time at Newton Medical Center and the Red Cross. Additionally, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club. Hobbies for Rev. Davis included square dancing, traveling, and playing bingo. He enjoyed close friendships with his church family and the Merryvale Assisted Living residents and staff. Rev. Davis was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Peggy M. Davis; parents, Hugo Martin, Sr., and Evie (Moss) Davis.

 

Survivors include his daughter, Kay D. Dubois of Winder; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary M. and Michelle Davis of Statesboro, J. Mark and Alison Davis of Covington; grandchildren, Brad C. Davis, Ben M. Davis, Lisa D. Domm, Ashley L. Morrow, Kelly A. Kerr, Chase Davis, Taylor E. Pittman, Andrew M. Pittman, III.

 

 

A Funeral Service for Mr. Davis will be held Saturday, July 8, 2017, 11 AM, First Baptist Church, 1139 Usher Street, in Covington, with Dr. Cody McNutt and Mr. Steve Aldridge officiating. Entombment will follow at Memory Chapel Mausoleum in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends may visit with his family at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, Friday, July 7, from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rev. Davis' memory to First Baptist Church in Covington.

Barbara B. Payne

 

Barbara B. Payne of Conyers, passed away July 1, 2017, at 82 years of age.  Born to Roy and Katie (Barber) Burdette, she always put her family and children first in her life.  Mrs. Payne will be remembered for the love and care she provided for the children in her family.  She was preceded in death by her parents; as well as her brothers Owen Burdette and Richard Burdette.

 

Survivors include her loving husband of 64 years, Bobby Payne of Conyers; daughters and sons-in-law, Theresa Payne of Conyers, Kay and Charles Faircloth of Covington; sons, Mark Payne of Dacula, Jonathan Payne, Mathew Payne, both of Conyers; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Payne will be held Thursday, July 6, 2017, 2:00 PM, at the chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor David Payne officiating.  Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  Friends may visit with the family, at the funeral home, Wednesday, July 5, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 105 Westpark Drive, Suite C, Athens, GA  30606.

Bruce W. Olter

Bruce W. Olter of Covington, passed away June 30, 2017, at 29 years of age.  A member of the Protestant faith, Bruce was a member of Kosrae Congregational Church in Conyers.  He enjoyed cooking, and was an exemplary employee who enjoyed his job.  Bruce was friendly, quiet, independent, and a strong family man. His son was his whole world.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Alice Olter.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of two years, Sepe Olter; daughter, Jene Josey; son, Walley Olter; father, Witson Olter; sisters, Lelean Kephas, Shrue Olter; brothers, Harrison Olter, Linus Olter; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Bruce will be held Saturday, July 15, 2017, 11:00 AM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Myrel Timothy Officiating.  Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  Friends may visit with the family one hour to the service, from 10:00 – 11:00 AM.  Flowers are accepted or contributions may be made to the Walley Olter Scholarship Fund.

Tony Oxenrider

Tony Oxenrider of Conyers, passed away July 1, 2017, at 50 years of age. Tony attended Newton Baptist Church and was employed by Atlanta Insulation in Lithonia for 20 years, and worked for Phoenix Metals in Norcross for a short time. A fun-loving person and proud grandfather, he enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and camping.

 

Survivors include his son, Shawn Oxenrider of Gainesville; grandson, Bransten Lewis; mother and step-father, Brenda and Donald Waggoner of Covington; father, Terry Oxenrider of Baltimore, MD; twin-brother, Tim Oxenrider and wife, Debbie, of Covington; brother, Chad Oxenrider of Baltimore, MD; maternal grandmother, Kathleen Lambert; aunts, Pamela Holloway, Donna Ward, Patricia Belcher; uncles, Darrell Lambert, Rodney Oxenrider, Ricky Oxenrider; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

 

A Funeral Service for Tony will be held Thursday, July 6, 2017, 6:00 PM, at Newton Baptist Church, 720 Jack Neely Road, in Covington, with Pastor Tony Howeth officiating.  He will lie in state one hour prior to the service, from 5:00 – 6:00 PM. Friends may visit with the family following the service.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tony's memory to Newton Baptist Church Building Fund.  Interment will take place in Holly Hill Memorial Gardens, Baltimore, Maryland.
