obit for Jolynn Gill

Jolynn Gill of Covington passed away Friday, March 29, 2019, at the age of 48. Jolynn was an employee of the Newton County School System where she diligently worked for many years. She was "Nana" to her grandchildren, and they each had a deep love and affection for her. Whether camping, going on cruises, or spending time in the sun and sand, Jolynn was a fun-loving and carefree spirit; she loved to dance and easily made friends anywhere she went. Jolynn will be profoundly missed by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey Eugene, Sr., and Mamie Helen Grantham.

 

Survivors include her husband, Michael Gill; daughters and son-in-law, Ashley and Josh Ellis of Newborn; Heather Gill of Covington; grandchildren, Emily Ellis, Lainey Ellis, J.T. Ellis; sister and brother-in-law, Shannon and Randy Brewer of Covington; brother, Harvey Eugene Grantham, Jr.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Jolynn will be held Wednesday, April 3, 2019, 2:00 P.M., at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Dr. David C. Eudon Byrd of Covington passed away Friday, March 29, 2019, at the age of 65. Eudon found pleasure in the simple things in life and was an all-around outdoorsman. He was happy anytime he could hunt, shoot guns, or relax and enjoy a "cold one". Eudon was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.

 

Survivors include his brothers, Willard Byrd, Billy Byrd, Jimmy Byrd; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mr. Byrd will be held Monday, April 1, 2019, 1:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington. Interment will follow in Redan Community Cemetery, 1608 Rice Road, Lithonia, Georgia. Rev. Mutombu Kayij of the Congo, passed away March 26, 2019, at the age of 75. Rev. Mutombu Kayij was a professor of theology in the Congo and a pastor for the United Methodist Church since 1965; he also served and did missionary work in North Africa. Rev. Kayij is survived by his loyal and devoted wife of 53 years, Kona Kayij.

 

A Funeral Service for Rev. Kayij will be held Saturday, April 6, 2019, 2:00 P.M., at the First United Methodist Church, 1113 Conyers Street SW, in Covington, with --- officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park in Covington. David Leland Mathis of Covington, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2019, at the age of 77. Mr. Mathis had been a member of County Line Baptist Church for 48 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was a lifelong carpenter. Mr. Mathis was preceded in death by his parents, John S. Mathis and Calvania (Collins) Mathis; sister, Johnnie Ruth Mitchell; brothers, Clinton Mathis, Herman Mathis, Bobby Mathis.

Otis Lee Corley, Jr. of Covington, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2019, at the age of 74. Mr. Corley was always a person that you could count on when a hand was needed. Working hard and taking care of his family, he made sure that family vacations and Christmases were great. Mr. Corley enjoyed fishing, restoring cars, watching wrestling and baseball. He loved spending time with his family – especially his grandchildren. Mr. Corley was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Margaret M. Corley; parents, Otis Lee Corley, Sr., and Julie Aslee (Crowe) Corley; siblings, Hazel, Mary, Larry, Julie, Cassie.

Grace D. Budd-Spradley

Grace D. Budd-Spradley of Oxford, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2019, at the age of 97. A lifelong resident of Newton County, Mrs. Spradley was a very active member of Allen Memorial United Methodist Church, in Oxford, where she served on the Board of Trustees, taught Sunday School classes for 25 years and served as Superintendent of the Children's Department. In addition, she taught, for 20 years, at the Little Red School House and 10 years at Social Circle Elementary School. As the oldest member of her graduating class from Georgia State University, she graduated Summa Cum Laude. Mrs. Spradley was involved with many things in her community, such as Charter member of Oxford Amitié Club, serving as Den Mother with the Cub Scouts, serving on the Oxford Tree Board, a member of the First Baptist Church 3R Club and of Young at Heart at Allen Memorial United Methodist Church. Her favorite hobbies included playing bridge and flower gardening. She was a renowned traveler - having been to all 50 states, several foreign countries and sailed 11 cruises. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Angela Budd Slaughter; husbands, Robert M. Budd, Sr., Earnest Foster; parents, W.J. (Red) Dearing and Eula (Mooney) Dearing; sister, Nevelyn Guinn; brothers, John F. Dearing, Virgil Dearing.

 

Survivors include her husband, Grady F. Spradley; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Jr., and Sandra Budd of Oxford, Joseph and Cheryl Budd of Panama City, FL, Michael Budd of Winston-Salem, NC, Gary and Jane Budd of Martinsville, VA; grandchildren, David Budd, Mark Budd, Scott Budd, Phillip Budd, K.C. Mary Tant

Mary Tant of Covington, passed away Friday, March 22, 2019, at the age of 75. Mrs. Tant was sassy, had a great sense of humor and "worked undercover". She also made friends with anyone she met. In her selfless nature, Mrs. Tant was always serving those in need and would often do so without wanting any recognition. She enjoyed sitting outside on her swing, with some Lays potato chips and a Coke, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Tant; son, Charles Tant; grandson, Dustin Daniecki; parents, Odell and Nellie Ruth Gunn.

 

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Raygina and John Daniecki, Tammy and Ricky Childs, Mary Jones and Michael Vaughn; sons, Thomas Conner, Raymond Tant; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.

Harold Enloe

Harold Enloe of Covington, passed away Tuesday, March 19, 2019, at the age of 79. Mr. Enloe was raised in Knoxville, Tennessee where he attended the University of Tennessee. After moving to Atlanta in 1962, he attended Marietta Technical School, where he studied electrical engineering. In the 1960's Mr. Enloe worked at Lockheed during production of the C-5A. In the 1970's – 80's he began a new career at Western Electric/AT&T, and after his retirement he worked at Publix in Smyrna. Mr. Enloe was curious about many things in life and enjoyed learning, leading him to hobbies that included photography, keeping up with politics, studying astronomy, technology, and anything science-related. In his earlier years, he enjoyed taking his family camping and visiting the mountains of East Tennessee, Western North Carolina, and North Georgia. An honest and direct man, Mr. Enloe was a firm believer and supporter of AA and will be remembered as a man who could recall the names of everyone he met.

 

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Angela and William Brooks; son and daughter-in-law, John and Kassandra Enloe; sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Steve Biron; nephews, Andrew Biron, Michael Biron.

Thomas Barrett Dally, Jr.

Thomas Barrett Dally, Jr., age 74, of Covington, passed away Friday, March 15, 2019. Mr. Dally was a proud veteran of the United States National Guard. He was a man who by his daily actions demonstrated a deep and unconditional love for family. Mr. Dally shared a special bond with his grandson, Jacob, and they enjoyed working together on the farm. He started Tri-County Livestock, which was located at the Hub, and was a member of the Cattleman's Association. Mr. Dally's hobbies tied together his life's passion of farming and his love of the outdoors – he liked to hunt and attend equipment sales. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Barrett, Sr., and Lucy Dally; and brothers, John Dally, Bob Dally.

Survivors include his loving wife, Kathy Dally; son, Barry Dally of Monroe; daughters and son-in-law, Lisa and Rusty Easley of Mexico, Laura Brockman of Monroe; 6 grandchildren, including grandson, Jacob Pope of Covington, who was more like a son; brother and sister-in-law, Hal and Becky Dally of Social Circle; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Regina Englund Jenkins, age 70, of Conyers, passed away Friday, March 15, 2019. Mrs. Jenkins was a hard worker and a driving force in the family business, Lance & Jenkins Wrecker Service, in Lawrenceville. She was well-known and highly regarded in the wrecker industry. Mrs. Jenkins had a calming spirit, a giving nature and caring ways that endeared her not only to family and friends, but to her employees as well. She was a steady and constant presence in the lives of her daughters and grandchildren and led by example of how to treat others with kindness and compassion. Mrs. Jenkins was always dressed to impress and was drawn to bright and festive colors. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, spending time with her family and shopping. Mrs. Jenkins was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Marion (Thompson) Gould.

 

She is survived by her devoted husband of 47 years, Kenneth Jenkins; daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle and John Patton of Loganville, Cindy and Chris Gould of Douglasville; grandchildren, Kinzee Chitwood, Riley Patton, Lexi Chitwood, Lindsey Patton, Katlin Gould; brother, Carlton Englund of Conyers; nephews, Travis Englund, Tyler Englund; as well as fur babies, Lucky, Skittles, Fendi, Holly, Sierra.

Prior to that, he also served as choir director for many years at Gaither's United Methodist Church. Mr. Autry's voice was a blessing, inspiration and comfort to all who had the opportunity to hear. After many years of dedicated service, he retired from Pactiv. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and PaPa. Mr. Autry was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Jennette Autry; brother, Tim Autry.

William C. (Bill) Hardy of Covington, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2019, at the age of 88. Mr. Hardy graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science Degree in agriculture. After cattle farming for 10 years, he pursued a career with the Department of Agriculture where he worked as a Soil Conservationist for over 30 years. Mr. Hardy was an active member of First Baptist Church in Covington. He served in various roles at the church including teaching Sunday School classes for many years, faithfully acting as a deacon, and lending his beautiful tenor voice to the choir. Mr. Hardy's passions were playing tennis and bird hunting, especially quail and dove. Once retired, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, Bertie Ann, and spending time with his beloved grandchildren. Mr. Hardy was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Hardy; and parents, Leonard George and Cecile (Berry) Hardy.

Ida Mae Johnson of Covington, passed away Monday, March 11, 2019, at the age of 81. Mrs. Johnson was a lifelong resident of Covington and a faithful and supportive member of Eastridge Community Church. For many years, she worked as comptroller for White's Department Stores, and after her retirement, she carved out a second career as a bookkeeper, serving many businesses and churches in the Newton County area. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Preston "Junior" Johnson, Jr.; granddaughter, Jessica Johnson; parents, Edward and Lois (Mask) Norman; and brother, J.B. Norman.

 

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Sam and Kathy Johnson, Clay and Kim Johnson, all of Covington; grandchildren and their spouses, Lori Johnson, Britton and Shaner Johnson, Kaley and Andrew Atkin, Wesley Johnson; great-grandchildren, Gracelyn Atkin, Katelyn Atkin; brother and sisters-in-law, Joel and Eleanor Norman of Conyers, Patsy Norman of Covington; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Ashley Marie Jones of Covington, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2019, at the age of 27. Ashley was an amazing girl who loved 80's music, arts and crafts, and spending time with her family and friends. For many years, she was active in Rockdale County sports where she played baseball with the Miracle League and participated in the Special Olympics. Ashley was dearly loved by all who knew her. Her vibrant smile and contagious laugh were an encouragement to anyone she was around. Ashley truly lived a life of happiness and love. Her greatest joys were being "Aunt Sissy" and spending time with her special friends. Ashley was preceded in death by her grandmothers, Linda Frazier, Yvonne Jones; and aunt, Jennifer Christian.

Mark Arlen Harris

Mark Arlen Harris, of Oxford, GA, passed away Monday, March 4, 2019, at the age of 55. Mark was a 1981 graduate of Loganville High School. He was an expert craftsman and enjoyed fishing in his spare time. Mark was a dedicated family man; he touched many lives and was cherished by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman Arlen Harris and Wellovee Harris-Willis; and brother, Tim Harris.

 

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Christopher Pendergraft; sister and brother-in-law, Denise and Steve Ellison; several nephews and a niece; and loving partner, Christy Barnett.

Regina K. Green of Loganville, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2019, at the age of 56. Regina believed in hard work and had a deep love for family. Her ability to face difficult circumstances and remain hopeful was a testimony to her strong spirit. Regina will be remembered as caring, thoughtful and always willing to give to others. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Dale Clegg; as well as parents, Thomas and Grace (Milligan) McCord.

Jean T. King

Jean King of Covington, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2019, at 93 years of age.  Born July 2, 1925, in Greenville, SC, to James Chester and Georgia Cleon (Paris) Thomas, who have preceded her in death, Jean attended Stone Elementary and Greenville High School.  She then attended Lander College, graduating in 1946, with a degree in mathematics.  During her time at Lander, Jean was very involved in student activities, serving as class president, and winning the award for Best All-Around Athlete in 1946.  She was also named to Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges in 1946.  After graduation she taught school in Williamston, SC, where she met her future husband, Bill King.  They were married in December 1948, and lived in a home that Bill built in Pelzer, SC.  Jean and Bill, along with their family, moved around with his job throughout the 50's and 60's, living up and down the East Coast.  In 1963 they moved to Calhoun, GA, and then in 1967, they moved to Covington, where they settled.  They were active members of First Baptist Church and American Legion Post 32 in Covington.  In addition Jean and Bill played tennis with ALTA and PATA teams, as well enjoying bridge with various friends and clubs.  After Bill's death in 2001, Jean remained active for several years before moving to Carrollton to live with her daughter, later moving to Carrollton Manor. Mrs. King was preceded in death by her husband, Bill King; and parents.

 

Survivors include her children Susan Herringdine of Carrollton, Rachel and Jim Manget of Trussville, AL, Bill, Jr., and Angela King of Covington, Gail King of Gainesville, Cheryl Rains of Athens; 14 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. King will be held Wednesday, March 6, 2019, 12:00 Noon, at First Baptist Church, 1139 Usher Street, Covington, with Dr. Cody McNutt officiating.  Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  Friends may visit with the family at the church one hour prior to the service, from 11:00 AM – 12:00 Noon.  Flowers are accepted or donations may be made to First Baptist Church in memory of Mrs. Jean King.

Mary Alice Kilpatrick, age 66, of Stockbridge, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2019. Always friendly and smiling, Mary Alice had a way of making genuine connections with people. She was dedicated to her work and excelled at any given task. Mary Alice liked to spend time with her fur babies and had many interests including crafting, reading and collecting light houses. An all-around sports fan, Mary Alice loved to cheer for local teams - the Braves, Falcons and Georgia Bulldogs. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Harvey and Mary Frances (Smith) Kilpatrick.  

 

Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Beverly and Johnny Smallwood of Stockbridge; niece, Tabatha McGee and her husband, Jason; great-niece, Harley McGee; and great-nephew, Colby McGee.

Judy Sams of Covington, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2019, at the age of 98. Mrs. Sams was born November 25, 1920, the eighth of nine brothers and sisters, in Watkinsville, Georgia, to the late J.O. and Eugenia Adams Lovern. She was preceded in death by her husband, James. E. Sams; son, George Edward McMullen, III, who was killed in the Vietnam War in 1975.

 

Throughout her life, Mrs. Sams served both her church and community in many capacities. She was a supportive member of Allen United Memorial Methodist Church, in Oxford, for over 80 years and a member of the Manning Bible Class. She worked for Peoples Drug Store, in Covington, for over 33 years. Mrs. Sams was known for being a wonderful cook and her fellow church friends would attest to her gift for baking the best chocolate pie around. Most importantly though, she loved the Lord Jesus Christ. "Well done thou good and faithful servant."

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Delores M. and Dana Hassell of Fayetteville; sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Paula McMullen of Canton, David L. and Judy McMullen of Social Circle; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; special niece, Dellree Nave and her husband, Paul; as well as several other special nieces and nephews.

Larry W. Herrington, age 69, of Covington, passed away February 27, 2019. After graduating from Valdosta High School in 1967, Larry attended Georgia Tech for two years before he answered the call to serve his country. As a proud veteran of the United States Army, he honorably served in Germany, as part of the 4th Armored Division, and in Vietnam, with the 4th Infantry Division. Upon completing his tour of duty, Larry embarked on a remarkable civilian career that would span over 47 years. He demonstrated a tireless work ethic and was employed by Southeastern Nut & Bolt, Peachtree State Fasteners, Gateway Industrial Supply, Cargo Control Solutions and Andersson Supply. Larry's daily walk with God was deeply personal. In past years, he attended worship at Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, The Baptist Tabernacle, Gateway Community Church, Zion Baptist Church and Hopewell Presbyterian Church. Larry's interests were music – he played trombone for his high school marching band – and sports. He was a passionate and enthusiastic fan of the Atlanta Braves. Larry will be profoundly missed by those that knew him - especially his granddaughter, Avery, who was the light of his life. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, C.C. and Robertha (Foster) Herington; and sister, Janice Herrington Sparks.

 

Larry is survived by his faithful wife of 46 years, Judy Herrington; son, Robert Cleaton Herrington; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Herrington Henley and her husband, Dustin; granddaughter, Avery Camille Michie Henley, all of Covington; sister, Cheryl Camp; brother-in-law, Daryl Sparks, both of  Valdosta; niece, Shannon McConico and her husband, Marcus; nephews, Roger Sparks and his wife, Kristina, Brian Sparks and his wife, Ansley, Kevin Sparks, Stephen Sparks and his wife, Ewelina; as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Louis H. Rambin, III, 73, loving husband, father and dear friend to all, died peacefully February 27, 2019, surrounded by his immediate family. In 2016, He was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and in the spinal cord.

 

Louis was a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he earned several medals, including a Bronze Star, CIB (Combat Infantry Badge), Presidential Citation, National Defense medal and Vietnam Service medal. He was a Sergeant in the Army's 1st Infantry's Division 1st Battalion, also known as the "Big Red One". The were the first infantry division to be deployed in Vietnam.

 

Louis was born in England, the son of Louis H. Rambin, II, and Irene P. Rambin. He grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, with his sister, Sharon. He attended Bass High School, where he made several lifelong friends and met the love of his life, Linda. Louis was a natural during his career in several sales-related jobs. He never met a stranger, loved to make others laugh, and he could always draw people in with his infectious smile. He retired to pursue his other passions – golfing, gardening and traveling. He also loved to watch the stock market, daily, and make trades – which he was still doing a week before he passed.

 

Survivors include his beloved wife, Linda Bergquist Rambin; son, Jeffrey Parry Rambin and his partner, Kelly Brown; sister, Sharon Phillips; sister-in-law, Vickie Franklin and her husband, Robert; as well as several nieces and nephews.
