Obit - Wesley Pullin

Wesley Pullin of Covington, passed away April 27, 2014, at the age of 82. Mr. Pullin enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, listening to bluegrass music and spending time with his family. He was loved, and will be missed by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Jerry Mathis; parents, David Gibb and Mattie Mae (Kirk) Pullin; and his brother, Hulen (Red) Pullin.

 

Survivors include his wife, Mae Pullin; daughters and sons-in-law, Debra Brown, Mattie and Tim Kitchens, all of Covington, Jane and Palmer Pace of Arcade, GA, Mary Ann and Douglas Wise, Barbara and James Baxter, all of Nicholson, Judy and Johnny Childs of Arcade; sons and daughter-in-law, David Pullin of Covington, Marvin and Martha Brock of Clarksville; 19 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and his niece, Brenda Dixon of Sharpsburg.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Pullin will be held Wednesday, April 30, 2014, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, with Rev. Phillip Reid and Rev. Jimmy Chandler officiating, and interment following in New Covington Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, April 28, from 6:00 – 9:00 PM, and Tuesday, April 29, from 6:00 – 9:00 PM.

Julia Helen Farmer Roberts

Julia Helen Farmer Roberts of Covington, passed away April 27, 2014 at Rockdale Medical Center.  She was 93 years of age at the time of her death.  Mrs. Roberts enjoyed quilting, eating out, Chick-Fil-A Ice Dreams, and going to the beauty shop.  She was always on the move, and will be remembered as being very strong- willed, and strong-minded.  But most of all, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.  Mrs. Roberts was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Alicia Roberts.

 

Survivors include her children, Anthony Roberts, Brenda L. Brown, Sandra J. Greene; 6 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

 

A Graveside Service for Mrs. Roberts will be held at 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at Eternal Hills Memory Gardens, 3700 Stone Mountain Highway, in Snellville.  The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, Tuesday April 29, from 1:00 – 9:00 P.M.  Flowers are accepted or memorial donations may be made to Leukemia Society of Georgia, 3715 Northside Parkway, Building 400, Suite 300, Atlanta, GA  30327 or Alzheimer’s Association, Georgia Chapter, 41 Perimeter Center East, Suite 550, Atlanta, GA  30346.

Obit - Martha Laverne Mask

Martha Laverne Mask of Covington, passed away April 25, 2014, at the age of 68. Laverne was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church, in Covington. She enjoyed spending time with her “youngins”, going to yard sales, and looked forward to watching Little House on the Prairie daily. She was a great mother, a loving Granny, and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Whenever someone told her they loved her, she always replied, “I love you anyway!” She was preceded in death by her parents, Willis and Martha (Maloy) Whidby; grandson, William Michael Yates; four sisters and two brothers.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Rick Jenovese of Social Circle; son, William Yates of Covington; granddaughters, Nichole, Jessica, Hannah, Sarah, Crystal, Stephanie, Heather, Amy; great-grandchildren, Dalton, Caitlyn, Jacob, Nicolas, Jordy; brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Kathy Whidby of Conyers; several nieces and nephews.

Reese Sanders officiating, and interment following in Zion Baptist Cemetery, in Covington. Obit - James Wayne Few

James Wayne Few of Covington, passed away April 24, 2014, at the age of 68. Although he was not an auto mechanic by trade, he was often found repairing cars. In addition, he enjoyed vegetable gardening, loved to fish, and was known for his delicious brunswick stew. Wayne was loved, and will be missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his mother, Alma Few; and his brother, Gene Few.

 

Survivors include his children and their spouses, Lisa and Ray Peters, Michael Few, all of Covington, James Few of Mansfield, Sharon and Ricky Barmann of Jackson; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Sheila and Walter Bell of Covington; many nieces and nephews.

 

The family will host a memorial gathering Sunday, April 27, 2014, 1:00 PM, at 1192 Rocky Creek Road, in Covington.

Obit - Jewel (Judy) Chapman

Jewel (Judy) Chapman, 88, of Social Circle, passed away April 23, 2014. Mrs. Chapman, one of eleven children, was born in Portland, Florida. She was a charter member of Parkwood Hills Baptist Church, in Decatur. She and her husband, James Chapman, were blessed with two daughters who she loved and cared for immensely. Mrs. Chapman was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Peggy Conner; her mother, Elizabeth (Hobbs) Pitts; and six brothers and sisters.

 

Survivors include her daughter and sons-in-law, Evelyn and William Vinson of Social Circle, Jerry Conner of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Lamar (Bo) and Lynn Vinson, Lori and Ted Tedder, Melissa and Sebastian Mancuso, Emily Puffer; 7 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mavis Hensley of Bradenton, FL, Juanita Boling of Pensacola, FL; brothers, Harvey Pitts, Cecil Pitts, both of Pensacola; many nieces and nephews.

 

A Graveside Service for Mrs. Chapman will be held Saturday, April 26, 2014, 3:30 PM, at Lawnwood Memorial Park, in Covington, with Pastor Ted Tedder officiating. Obit - Jean T. Dawkins Walton

Jean T. Dawkins Walton, 80, of Covington, passed away April 21, 2014. Mrs. Walton was a member of Gaithers United Methodist Church, and worked for the City of Covington Emergency Services as a dispatch operator. She enjoyed making churches out of plastic canvas, and was quite the athlete when she was younger.  

She was preceded in death by her husbands, William Lee Dawkins, Sr., Thomas Wilson Walton; and her parents, William Barron and Nollie (Haynes) Thompson.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Bob Hamby of Social Circle; son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Diane Dawkins of Oxford; grandchildren, Lee Dawkins, Jared Hamby, Montana Hamby; great-grandchildren, Brittany Dawkins, Joseph Dawkins, Harlie Dawkins; great-great-granddaughter, Ryleigh Mae Dawkins; sister and brother-in-law, Sherry and C.B. Morgan of Monticello; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Jo Thompson of Monroe, Virgil and Jo Thompson of Decatur; several nieces and nephews.

Sarah E. Jones, 86, of Oxford, passed away April 18, 2014. Mrs. Jones had an overwhelming compassion for animals and wildlife. She loved her family dearly, and appreciated her time with them and her friend, Tom Pritchett. Mrs. Jones enjoyed attending social events with her daughter and friends.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Debra J. Okun of Oxford; loving friend, Tom Pritchett; nieces, Brenda Hefner and her husband, Rob, Judy McMinn and her husband, Cameron; nephew, Richard Martin and his wife, Sharon; great-nieces and great-nephews, Michelle Burdeshaw, Kevin Hefner, Brad Hefner, Joann Bolick, Kenneth Dillard, Jr.

 

A Graveside Service for Mrs. Jones will be held Wednesday, April 23, 2014, 2:00 PM, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 2700 Deans Bridge Road, Augusta, GA 30906, with Rev. Andy Adams officiating. Obit - Henry Lester

Henry O. Lester of Covington, passed away April 20, 2014, at the age of 82. He was a member of Highview Baptist Church, and was very active in the work of the church while he was able. He was an electrician, by trade, and enjoyed woodworking and watching the Atlanta Braves. Mr. Lester was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Christine Lester; brother, Joe Brown Lester; and his parents, Benjamin and Lena (Chapman) Lester.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Hazel B. Lester; sister, Eugenia Taylor of Warrenton; daughter at heart, Janice Faye; and a host of nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Lester will be held Wednesday, April 23, 2014, 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, with Pastor Mike Thomas officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park with Minister Don Day officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday, April 22, from 6:00 – 9:00 PM. Flowers are accepted, or contributions may be made to the family to assist with medical expenses incurred during his extended illness.

 

Jerry Odean McLeroy

Jerry Odean McLeroy passed away April 20, 2014, at his home in Covington.  He was 84 years of age at the time of his death.  Mr. McLeroy loved spending time with his great-grandchildren, and especially enjoyed vacationing with them.  He had 35 years of service with Lithonia Lighting.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, LaRue McLeroy; granddaughter, Tava Martin; and parents, Dick and Eva McLeroy.

 

Survivors include his wife, Irene “René” McLeroy; daughters and sons-in-law, Tina Shepherd, Toni and Ricky Weathington, Tonya and Dave Smith; son, James Toby Sammons, all of Covington; several grandchildren, great-granchildren, nieces, and nephews.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. McLeroy will be held Saturday, April 26, 2014, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, with his great-nephew, Brian Elrod, officiating.  Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Friday, April 25, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you spend time making special memories with your grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Sidney Lee Durden of Covington, passed away April 17, 2014, at the age of 71. Mr. Durden worked for Lithonia Lighting for more than 42 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, collecting coins, spending time with his grandkids, eating out and traveling when he was able. He cherished his time in God’s Word. Mr. Durden was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Washington and Daisy Lee (Kirkus) Durden; and his brothers, Eugene and Gerald Durden.

 

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Durden of Covington; daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn and Gene Higdon of Covington, Tina Fuller of Conyers, Stephanie and Mike Giles of Covington; son, Kevin and Kelli Durden of Covington; 12 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Mildred Patterson of Columbus, Margie and Curtis Kimball of Oxford; brother and sister-in-law, Horace and Jackie Durden of Covington; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Deborah Corley Taylor, of Covington, passed away April 14, 2014, at the age of 56.  She enjoyed attending her sons’ sporting events and reading, but most of all she loved spending time with her adored grandchildren.  She was a devoted employee of Gene Hyde Trucking for many years. 

 

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Liane Taylor, Joshua and Stephanie Taylor, all of Covington; grandchildren, Zoe Taylor, Zane Taylor, Leah Ricks, Jaden Ricks, Rocko Taylor, Autumn Taylor;  mother, Margaret Stephens, of Covington; sisters, Carol Guilbeau-Matz, Cathy Bullard, Cheryl Carter, all of Covington, Linda Stinchcomb of Porterdale, Karen Colyer of Covington; brothers, Pete Hilliard of South Carolina, David Roper of Covington, Aaron Corley of Porterdale; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Billy Reagin

Billy Reagin of Covington passed away April 10, 2014 at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle.  He was 62 years of age at the time of his death.  Billy loved to spend time with his family and friends.  He also enjoyed riding his Harley, going to motorcycle rallies, and was an avid Georgia fan.  In addition, he loved playing softball, being outside, trips to Biloxi, and watching NASCAR.  Billy was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Burton and Jane (Sammons) Jackson; and his beloved dogs, Abby and Ellie.

 

Survivors include his wife, Karen Reagin of Covington; daughter and son-in-law, Shelley Reagin and Taylor Barnett of Covington; son and son-in-law, Dusty Reagin and Ryan Kerian of Berkeley, CA; granddaughter, Sophia Reagin Barnett; sister, Marcia McCord, both of Covington; several nieces and nephews, including Kelly, Jamie, Chris and Amanda; and his dogs, Braxton and Yeager.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Reagin will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, April 12, at Shiloh United Methodist Church with Rev. Mike Wadley officiating.

Obit - Henry Drew McRay, Jr.

Henry Drew McRay, Jr. of Covington passed away April 4, 2014 at Landmark Hospital in Athens.  He was 79 years of age at the time of his death.  Mr. McRay was a retired U.S. Navy veteran with more than 20 years of service.  He was a very patriotic and giving person who loved his family dearly, enjoyed going to the ocean, and riding the dirt roads.  Mr. McRay attended Gaithers United Methodist for over 20 years, and was currently a member of Christ Cornerstone Church. He was preceded in death by his son, Monty William McRay; parents, Henry Drew, Sr. and Tine (Bates) McRay.

 

Mr. McRay is survived by his wife, Geraldine K. McRay, son and daughter-in-law, Marty and Kim Gibbs, all of Covington; grandchildren, Courtney Gibbs, Hunter Gibbs, Taylor Christopher Gibbs, Dawson Christopher Gibbs; sister and brother-in-law, Kitty and Bobby Herring of Covington; as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. McRay will be held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, with Pastor Darrell Payne and Andy Parker officiating.  Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Monday, April 7, from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M.
