obit for Landis Walker

 

Landis Walker, of Mansfield, passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at the age of 89. Mr. Walker was a loving father and grandfather, and a devoted husband of 64 years, to his wife, Thelma. He worked alongside his wife, at his company, Walker Metal Products, Inc. Mr. Walker was the perfect example of one of Jehovah's Witnesses - a kind and generous man who dedicated much of his time witnessing to others. 

Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Reba and Michael Andrews, Melodie Walker; grandchildren, Cheryl Elizabeth, Catherine Elise Andrews, Gwendolyn Roxanne Gray, Laura Marie Walker, Daniel Sheehan, Kevin Sheehan; great-grandchildren, Isaac John Walker, Eden Love Walker, Josiah Sheehan, Isabella Sheehan, Hope Mitchell, Faith Mitchell; brother, Robert Walker; as well as several nieces and nephews. 

 

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Maureen Mayes Entz

Maureen Mayes Entz of Newborn, went on to be with the Lord, Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at the age of 78. Maureen was a devoted Christian and a faithful member of Belmont Baptist Church, in Conyers. Though small in size, Maureen was a strong and powerful woman who worked tirelessly in both her professional and personal life. She continually provided endless support for her entire family; all of whom she loved very deeply. Maureen enjoyed traveling and taking in the peaceful surroundings of her beautiful home. She consistently saw the best in those she met, always extended grace and accepted people right where they were. She is loved and will be missed by all who knew her. Maureen was preceded in death by her son, Jamie Finch, and husband, Abe Entz.

 

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Shannon and Al Hoke, Kelly Coley, Kim and Bobby Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Kelly Entz; grandchildren and their spouses, April Thomas, Joshua and Jessica Thomas, Crystal and Stephen Paris, Ashley and Wesley Burke, Lauren Chambers; six great-grandchildren; brother, Michael T. Mayes; nieces, Corey and Melanie Allred, Lisa Brooks.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Entz will be held Saturday, August 3, 2019, 12:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Nolan Jackson officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home, Friday, August 2, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Robert (Bob) Donaldson, Sr.

Robert (Bob) Donaldson, Sr. of Covington, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2019, at the age of 76. Mr. Donaldson proudly served his country in the United States Army. He enjoyed fishing, and in his younger years competed in tournaments. Mr. Donaldson was an avid fan of NASCAR, football, golf, baseball and hockey. He was a world class storyteller and an all-around good man. Mr. Donaldson loved his family dearly and will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Gene Donaldson, Jr. (Butch); father, Robert Andrew Donaldson, Sr.; brother, Robert Andrew "Andy" Donaldson, Jr.; sister, Kim Donaldson.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 43 years, Sue J. Donaldson; daughters and sons-in-law, Lynne and Jerry Cagle, Anita and Jimmy Daniel; grandchildren, Sterling Cagle, Cristy Daniel, Stiles Cagle, Lidell Donaldson, James Donaldson, Alex Daniel, Sydni Cagle; great-grandchildren, Tyler Cagle, Hunter Cagle, Ellianna Daniel; sister, Debbie Newsom; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mr. Donaldson will be held Wednesday, July 31, 2019, 4:00 P.M., at the chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, with Dr. Tom Rush and Pastor Tommy Fountain officiating. Interment will be held in Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Drive, Canton, at a later date. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home, two hours prior to his service, from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M. Positive and uplifting, she was always encouraging to everyone she knew. Courtnie was known for being "fashionably late" and her love for her family and friends was unconditional. Joanne Howell updated obit

Mrs. Joanne Sorrells Howell passed away July 26, 2019 at her home with her family by her side. Josie was born May 17, 1932 in the Covington Mills community.  She was the youngest of 10 children born to W. C. and Annie Sorrells. She had a happy childhood making many lifetime friends in the Covington Mills community.  In 1950 she married the love of her life J. W. Howell.  They were proud parents of three sons Andy, Kevin and Scott. They both were very supportive of all activities their boys were involved in. They followed their boys to every football, baseball and softball games no matter how far away. This was also true for their grandchildren. Joanne was den mother for many years. She was a great cook. Her Sunday dinners were like having Thanksgiving every week for as long as her health allowed her to cook.  She made the best peanut butter cakes and they were made famous. Joanne worked for 20 plus years for Southern Bell and served those years as Treasurer of Local 3205 Communications Workers of America Union.

 

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sisters, Monteen Sammons, Mozell Ingram, Anne McLeroy, Lil Smith; brothers, Roy, Ray, James, Bill and Lamar; and her daughter-in-law, Denise Evans Howell. Joanne is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Andy and Donna Howell, Kevin and Gayle Howell, all of Covington and Scott and Johannah Howell of Dudley, GA.; grandchildren, Andrea and Wes Crowe of Monticello, Kimberly and Jon Wilber, Kraig and Nichole Howell, Kaine Howell, Todd Chambers and Julie and Darnell Jackson all of  Covington; great grandchildren, Connelly Crowe, Brelan Crowe, Aubrey Crowe, Hutch Crowe, Katelin Wilber, Katheryn Wilber, Reese Chambers, Charlie Jackson and Kora Howell; several nieces and nephews, including special niece and nephew, Rene` McLeroy and Richy Smith.

 

A Graveside Service for Mrs. Howell will be held Monday, July 29, 2019, 11:00 A.M., in Covington Mill Cemetery, with Benjamin Reynolds officiating.

 

Her family would like to thank all the caretakers she had the years she lived in Dudley, GA with Scott. A special thanks to the Hospice nurses. Thanks for all your prayers during this difficult time.

Kathryn (Kathy) Caldwell Miller

Kathryn (Kathy) Caldwell Miller, age 74, of Covington, GA, passed away Friday, July 26, 2019, surrounded by her loving family at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle, GA.  Born on May 21, 1945 in Telfair County, GA, she was the daughter of the late Otis Caldwell and Lois Carpenter.  She grew up in Helena, GA.  In 1967 she married Thomas Miller, a Vietnam veteran. During his 20 years in the United States Army, they lived in Ft. Stewart, GA, Columbus, MS, Nuremberg, Germany, Albany and Marietta, GA. Mrs. Miller was a member of Victorious Life Church in Conyers, GA.  She was preceded in death by her son, James Stewart Miller; mother, Lois (Carpenter) Smith; and father, Otis Caldwell.

 

Mrs. Miller is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, James Thomas Miller, III; sister, Linda Allison (Jim) of Nashville, TN; brother, Emmett Johnson (Patty) of Punta Gorda, FL; niece, Dalayna Cook of Nashville, TN; nephews, Timothy and Christopher Schmitt of New York City, NY and several other nephews and nieces.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Miller will be Tuesday, July 30, 2019, 11:00 A.M., at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, GA. with visitation starting at 10:00 A.M.  Burial will follow at Piney Mount Methodist Church Cemetery, in Wrightsville, GA at 3:00 P.M.  Rev. Ken Smith, Pastor of Community Praise Church will officiate the service and Sandy Sindell, Mrs. Miller's, sister-in-law will conduct the eulogy and graveside service. Pallbearers are Jeff Kidwell, Lawton Miller, Lewis Miller, Nathan Miller and John Sindell. Flowers are accepted, or donations may be made to Abbey Hospice, 215 Azalea Court, Social Circle, GA 30025.

 

The family would like to thank the staff at Abbey Hospice for their loving and compassionate care of Mrs. Miller.

Bruce Jones, of Covington, passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at the age of 66. Bruce was a lifelong resident of Newton County and was deeply rooted in his hometown community of Porterdale. An all-around athlete, he had a passion for playing ball. Bruce played Little League Baseball for the Porterdale Yankees, and he played fast-pitch softball for the Atlanta Crackers. He also loved to watch football and his favorite team was the Georgia Bulldogs. Bruce will be remembered as a caring person and a genuine friend. He was preceded in death by his mother, Frances (Freeman) Jones; and brothers, Jimmy Jones, Todd Jones.

 

Survivors include his daughter, Jodi Jones; son, Jason Jones; father, James Claxton Jones; brother, Ronny Jones; as well as numerous friends who will miss him dearly.

 

A Graveside Service for Bruce will be held Thursday, July 25, 2019, 12:00 Noon, at Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery, 3962 Salem Road, in Covington, with Ms. Patricia Hill officiating. Carol Hayes Townley

Carol Hayes Townley of Loganville passed away Monday, July 22, 2019, at 75 years of age.  Carol was proud of her Cherokee Indian and Irish heritage.  She was born to the late James and Shirley Maxwell Hayes, who have preceded her in death.  In addition to her parents, Carol is preceded in death by her siblings, Geraldine Hayes, Monroe Hayes, Shirley Ruth Hayes White, Viola Hayes Humble.

 

Survivors include her devoted husband of almost 59 years, Hubert L. Townley, Sr.; children, Lamar Townley, Jr., Geraldine Smith, Gloria Malcom; Mary Faith Townley; one granddaughter, five grandsons; brother, Bobby Malcom Hayes; as well as several nieces and nephews.

obit for Dr. Carlo B. Meyer


Dr. Carlos B. Meyer, of Oxford, passed away Sunday, July 21, 2019, at the age of 91. Dr. Meyer held a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Emory University; a Master of Education from the University of Georgia; a Doctorate of Education in Health and Physical Education from Peabody College, Nashville, TN. He completed his education receiving a specialty degree from the University of Georgia in Administration. Dr. Meyer shared his passion for teaching and instilled in his students a love of learning. During the span of his remarkable career as an educator, he taught at various institutions. Dr. Meyer taught at Newton High School for 2 years where he was the first head basketball coach in the new high school gymnasium, and an assistant football coach. After 20 years at Oxford College, Dr. Meyer was the assistant principal at Cousins Middle School and Southwest DeKalb High School. He retired as an educator from Stoneview Elementary School in Lithonia after serving as principal. Throughout his lifetime, Dr. Meyer served in many capacities as a supportive and vital member of his community.  He was past president of the Covington Rotary Club and was a founding member and past president of the Oxford Lions Club. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, where he was a scout master and camp director and received the Silver Beaver award for distinguished service. As an active member of Allen Memorial United Methodist Church since 1951, Dr. Meyer taught Sunday School classes for many years, in addition to other positions held in the church. He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 68 years, Mrs. C.B. (Bim) Meyer; as well as parents, Julian Lofton and Lillian Della (Adkins) Meyer.

 

Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Maridel Meyer Reynolds of Monticello; Cynthia Meyer Evans and husband, Vince, of Conyers; grandchildren and their spouses, Greg and Missy Anderson, Jonathan Reynolds, Anna Kate Reynolds, Nick and Danielle Reynolds, Brandon and Leslie Evans, Ansley and Bobby Britton; great-grandchildren, Blaine Reynolds, Ashtyn Reynolds, Teagan Reynolds, Gavin Harrison, Tyler Cole Britton, Kimbrel Britton; sister, Nell Florene Meyer of Norcross.

Ms. Hooper was active in the life of her church, Newton Baptist, and was working with the children in Kid's Camp up until the time of her passing. She had a servant's heart and was happy any time she was volunteering and helping others. Ms. Hooper had a social and outgoing spirit. She enjoyed being a member of Fieldstone Estates Homeowner's Association, loved to exercise with her Silver Sneakers group, and was always up for traveling. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lisa Jane Hooper; son, James Kent Hooper; parents, Julian Stokes and Sarah (Matthews) Kent.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Leslie Hooper of Cherokee, NC; grandson, Christopher Steven Hooper of Acworth, GA; sister, Louise Howard of Goose Creek; as well as several nieces and nephews.

obit for Jimmy Harris

Larry Harris of Clarkesville, GA, passed away Friday, July 19, 2019, at the age of 82. Born and raised in Covington, GA, Mr. Harris was a graduate of Newton County High School, Class of 1955, and a former member of Calvary Baptist Church. After graduating high school, he attended Georgia State University before receiving a business certification from the Harvard School of Business in the Advanced Management Program. Mr. Harris had a long and illustrious career as a management consultant with Brooks International, which took him and his family all over the world, including time in Europe. He was an avid golfer whose many trophies demonstrated his accomplishments. In 2001, Mr. Harris retired to Hilton Head and resided there until moving to Clarkesville in 2010. He was preceded in death by his son, Benjamin Walter Harris; as well as parents, Walter Herschel and Esther Naomi (Cleghorn) Harris.

 

Left to cherish his memory is his adoring wife of 62 years, Marsha Harris; daughter, Leslie Harris of Hilton Head, SC; sons and daughter-in-law, Brad and Liz Harris of London, England; Matt Harris of Cleveland, GA; grandchildren, Nikolas Harris, Eddie Harris, both of London, England; sister and brother-in-law, Cynthia and Tony Webb; brother, Jimmy Harris, all of Covington, GA; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Brenda A. Garner

Brenda A. Garner of Covington, passed away Friday, July 19, 2019, at the age of 73. Mrs. Garner taught at Tabernacle Christian School, but for most of her working career, she dedicated 28 years of service to K-Mart before retiring. In her spare time, she enjoyed flower gardening and reading romance and mystery novels. Mrs. Garner was known for getting from place to place in her car very quickly. She was a loving and devoted wife as well as a dedicated mother and grandmother. Mrs. Garner was preceded in death by her parents, Ed Armistead and Mary (Sims) Armistead.

 

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, James L. obit for Darran Chase

Darran Chase, of Dallas, GA, formerly of Conyers, passed away Thursday, July 18, 2019, at the age of 53. Darran was a 1983 graduate of Heritage High School and a longtime resident of Dallas, GA. He was a dedicated and loyal employee of Zep Chemical for over 30 years. Darran was an enthusiastic and passionate football fan, and his chosen teams were Georgia Tech and the Atlanta Falcons. As a season ticket holder for Georgia Tech, he shared his love of football and made lasting memories with sons, Conner and Carter, as they rooted and cheered for their home team year after year.

 

Darran will be lovingly remembered by his sons, Conner Chase, Carter Chase; parents, Tom and Ann Chase; sister and brother-in-law, Leeann and Jimmy Farmer; nephews, Danny Farmer, Michael Farmer and his wife, Emily; great-niece, Ashton Farmer; as well as former wives, Linda Snyder and Carla Chase.

obit for William Trox Mooney

 

William Trox Mooney, of Oxford, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2019, at the age 81. Mr. Mooney proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was an extraordinary and hardworking family man who immersed himself daily in God's Word and its teachings. Mr. Mooney was mechanically gifted and was known for his love of working on small engines. His other hobbies included hunting, fishing and watching gospel movies. Mr. Mooney will be remembered as a nurturing and supportive husband, father, grandfather and brother.

 

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Mooney; daughters, Kathy Brooks, Shari Ann Mooney; sons, William Anthony Mooney, Terry Lynn Mooney; sister, Barbara Dianne Storey; brothers, Thomas Reuben Garner, Benny Lee Garner, Jerry Lee Garner; as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Carrolyn Jean Miller

Carrolyn Jean Miller of Covington, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2019, at the age of 70. Mrs. Miller was a native of West Virginia before moving to Covington in 1982. She was an employee at Ingles for several years in Covington. A few of Mrs. Millers favorite hobbies included watching NASCAR and traveling to Panama City Beach, Florida. She was family oriented and enjoyed being outside - but especially loved her flowers. Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald Eugene and Inez Jean (Oldham) Eaton; sisters, Louise Sandman and Jackie Mitchell.

 

Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Gerald Gene Miller, Sr.; daughter and son-in-law, Amy Mimz Nelson (David); son and daughter-in-law, Gerald Gene Miller, II, (Emilee); grandchildren, Joey, Joshua, Travis, Gavin, Haylee, Carly, Harlee; sisters, Pam Hall, Brenda Whipkey, Emma Lou Eaton-Smith, Paula Eaton, Janet Eaton; brothers and sister-in-law, Jeff Eaton, Gerald Eaton, Jr., Richard Eaton (Stephanie); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Larry Hardegree

Larry Hardegree of Porterdale, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2019, at the age of 72. Mr. Hardegree retired from Bibb Manufacturing after 48 years of dedicated service. He enjoyed fishing, attending car shows and was an avid WWE Wrestling fan. Mr. Hardegree loved his family dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Lorene Hardegree; brother, Jackie Hardegree.

Linda Sue Hendrix Cook

Linda Sue Hendrix Cook, 74, of Covington, Georgia, passed away July 13, 2019. Linda was born on May 30, 1945, in Metter, Georgia, to Garland Edenfield and Cliffer Collins Hendrix. She was raised in Metter, and after graduating from Metter High School, moved to Atlanta. Linda graduated from Georgia State University with an Accounting Degree. She spent most of her life as a career person working for Assurant Solutions as Sr. Vice President of Accounting in Atlanta. Linda was a faithful and active member of Crossroads United Methodist Church, in Conyers. She enjoyed traveling and made many friends where she lived. Linda loved spending time with family and was always the life of the party. She was preceded in death by her parents, Garland Edenfield and Cliffer Collins Hendrix; sister, Sarah Jacquelyn Hendrix Crisp and her husband, Tom Cook.

 

A devoted wife, sister and great-aunt, she is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Garland Cliff and Patricia Hendrix of Metter; one niece, Casey Lynn Hendrix (Derek) Brown of Dillon, SC; three nephews, Patrick Cliff (Brandi) Hendrix of Metter, GA, Thomas Henry (Heather) Crisp of Covington, GA, Eric Preston (Melissa) Crisp of Bethlehem, GA; three great-nieces, Halie Elizabeth Hendrix, Katelynn Crisp and Britian Crisp; four great-nephews, Caden Stewart Hendrix, Adam Jase Hendrix, Zain Hudson Hendrix and Wil Preston Crisp.

 

A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Linda S. Hendrix Cook is planned for Saturday, July 27, 2019, 11:00 A.M., at the Metter Presbyterian Church, 611 S. Lewis Street in Metter, Georgia. Charles Winston Bone

Charles Winston Bone of Covington, passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2019, at the age of 75. Mr. Bone enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, traveling to St. Simons and creating things with his hands. He loved spending time with his family and friends. Mr. Bone was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Rebecca Bone, whom he cherished and adored; son, Eric Bone; father, James Edward Bone; sisters, Annette Bone, Patricia Middlebrooks; brothers, Howell Bone and Jim Bone.

Ms. Mask was preceded in death by her daughter, Tina Gail Mask; and parents, Marvin C. and Annie Mae (Morrow) Dial.

Kenneth D. (Ken) Allen

Kenneth D. (Ken) Allen of Oxford, passed away Monday, July 8, 2019, at the age of 76. Mr. Allen was a faithful member and trustee of New Life Baptist Church in Covington. For 30 years he was a dedicated employee at Evans Tool & Die. A sports fanatic, Mr. Allen enjoyed coaching little league football and cheering for his favorite teams, University of Georgia Bulldogs, Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Falcons. When he wasn't watching sports, he enjoyed watching Western movies. Mr. Allen was a true family man and loved his family dearly. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Tonya L. Allen; son, Shane Allen; parents, J.H. and Nell Allen.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 43 years, Linda Allen; daughter, Sheila Peppers; sons and daughters-in-law, Monty Allen, Chris and Krysti Allen, Billy and Frances Peppers, Lamar and Tressa Peppers, Jason and Beth McIntyre; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Sandra Harper; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gary and Jane Allen, Larry and Diane Allen, Danny and Rhonda Allen; as well as several nieces and nephews.

USAF (Ret.) Lt. Colonel Thomas E. Brazil, of Newborn, passed away July 8, 2019, at the age of 80. Tom was a native Georgian, born in LaGrange and raised in Atlanta. He attended Atlanta public schools and graduated from Georgia Tech. Tom and his wife, Marene, had three children: Tom, Jr., a teacher in Douglas County; Barbara, a teacher in Gwinnett County; and Jimmy, a supervisor in Cobb County, as well as three grandchildren, James, John, and Mary.

 

Tom was a landowner in north Jasper County for 38 years and a homeowner for 22 years. He and Marene moved from Dunwoody where they lived for 23 years. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel with 35 years of service, active and reserve; his last tour was as a base commander in country Operation Desert Shield/Storm. Tom's decorations included the Meritorious Service Medal (3 awards), Air Force Commendation Medal (2 awards), National Defense Service Medal (with 2 Bronze Service Stars), Vietnam Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal (with Bronze Service Star), plus numerous service medals. During his military service, he received an advanced degree from the National Defense University and completed many specialized Air Force courses. Tom was also retired from Lockheed where he was a Senior Engineer on the F-22A Fighter program.

 

Civic and community affiliations included:

-          14 years as youth baseball and football coach and member of Board of Directors, DeKalb County

-          Member, Georgia Tech National Alumni Association

-          Member, Air Force Association

-          Past State President, Treasurer, National Councilman, and current Secretary of the Reserve Officers Association. Also, a past president the Greater Atlanta Chapter

-          Member, Veterans of Foreign Wars

-          Trustee, Newborn Area Heritage Trust, Inc.

-          Member, Military Officers Association of America

 

In Jasper County, Tom served for ten years as an unpaid volunteer on the Jasper County Water and Sewer Authority where he served as Chairman. He acted as Foreman of the Jasper County Grand Jury and as Chairman of the Board of Tax Accessors for Jasper County. Tom was a 2001 graduate of the Jasper County Leadership Course.

 

A Graveside Service for Tom will be held Monday, July 15, 2019, 10:30 A.M., at Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Drive, Canton, GA, 30114. Friends are invited to visit with the family Sunday, July 14, from 3:00 – 6:00 P.M., at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington.

Bryant Hedrick, age 45, of Covington, passed away Tuesday, July 2, 2019. As a veteran of the United States Army, Bryant served his country with immense pride and loyalty. He was a godly man who instilled in his daughters a love for Christ and a belief in core principles that aligned seamlessly with their faith. Bryant, though strong and stoic, had a deep capacity to love and an open heart. He was a hardworking provider and an impeccable role model who was inspired by his passion and love for family. Bryant's absence as a husband, father, son and brother will leave the world a dimmer place.

 

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 20 years, Chrissee Hedrick; daughters, Leslee Hedrick, Brittnee Hedrick, Kaylee Hedrick; parents, Vergil and Leslie Hedrick of Conyers; sister, Caroline and Brad Chambers of Canton; brother, Casey and Ali Hedrick of Decatur; as well as several nieces and nephews.
