Shirley "Vonnie" Crowe

Shirley "Vonnie" Crowe of Monroe, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2020, at the age of 70. Mrs. Crowe enjoyed working in her garden, canning, and was a wonderful cook and baker – she especially liked making her delicious banana pudding. She loved her family, grandchildren and church family dearly and will be missed by all who knew her. Mrs. Crowe was preceded in death by her husband, Mack Junior Crowe; grandchild, Mandy Davenport; mother, Mildred Modene Coker; father, William Lamar Mathis; brother, Dewey Mathis.

 

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Craig and Denise Davenport, Donnie and Kelley Davenport, Marshal and Jill Davenport; grandchildren and their spouses, Adam Davenport, Kayli and Ryan Parks, TJ Davenport, Scott Davenport, Payton Davenport; great-grandchildren, Kenli Parks, Kaydin Parks; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby Mathis, Rickey and Tina Mathis, Mark and Ellen Carter, Barry and Connie Carter, Larry and Penny Carter; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Crowe will be held Sunday, August 2, 2020, 4:00 P.M., at Full Gospel Holiness Church, 3170 Highway 138, in Monroe, with Pastor Larry Carter and Todd Stone officiating, and interment following in Jersey Holiness Cemetery, in Jersey. Friends are invited to visit with the family, at the church, two hours prior to her service, from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M.

obit for Amanda Louise Johnson

Amanda Louise Johnson, of Covington, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2020, at the age of 86. Mrs. Johnson was a caring nurse who worked alongside Dr. Calloway, in Covington, for many years. She was strong in spirit and passionate for family. Mrs. Johnson shared a genuine connection with her children and grandchildren and was the best version of herself when in their company. She found pleasure in simple things like sitting quietly to read or enjoying nature's scenery while birdwatching. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her parents, Fincher Newton Coody, Sr., and Ruth (Carroll) Coody.

 

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and David Hayes, Cindy and Mick Johnson; sons and daughters-in-law, Emory and Joanne Johnson, Hank and Janice Johnson; grandchildren, Brent and Kim Johnson, Melissa and Steve Wilkins, Wesley Hayes, Jonathan and Angel Hayes, Nichole and Billy Lott, Jeremy and Brittany Johnson, Jason and Jessica Johnson; 13 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Marina Coody; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Graveside Service for Mrs. Johnson will be held Saturday, August 1, 2020, 2:00 P.M., at Lawnwood Memorial Park, 1111 Access Road, in Covington.

Doris L. Upton

Doris L. Upton of Conyers, passed away Saturday, July 25, 2020, at the age of 84. Mrs. Upton was a longtime resident of Rockdale County, and a 1956 graduate of Orangeburg Regional Hospital Nursing School where she obtained a three-year Nursing Degree. In 1968, she and her family moved to Conyers where she was Head Registered Nurse at Newton Hospital from 1968 to 1969. Mrs. Upton then began a teaching career in DeKalb County where she taught Allied Health, a pioneering health class as an introduction to high school students for a nursing career.

After teaching, she became the Social Services Director for Economic Opportunities of Atlanta, in Rockdale County. Mrs. Upton was instrumental, along with Olivia Haydell, in bringing the Senior Citizens Center, Meals on Wheels, Sheltering Arms and Clothes Closet programs to Rockdale County in the mid 1970's. Mrs. Upton retired from Social Services to join her husband in their family construction firm. In 1996, she and her partners built Village Antiques in Milstead, GA. This business utilized her love of antiques and her passion for traveling the world.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawton and Betty Livingston; sisters, Reba Huckabee, Audrey Grant; brothers, Cecil Livingston, Wade Livingston, Grady Livingston, Raliegh Livingston.

 

Those left to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 63 years, Bob Upton; daughters and son-in-law, Cyndi Upton, Teri and Allen Gray; son and daughter-in-law, Robby and Kay Upton; grandchildren, Nicole Armburst, Shane Sample, Chandler Gray; great-grandchildren, Jaylin Daniel, Jagger Powers, Camden Sample; as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

 

Due to Covid-19, a small, private graveside service for Mrs. Upton will be held Monday, July 27, 2020, 11:00 A.M., at Lawnwood Memorial Park, 1111 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Tom Lee officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Upton's honor to the Alzheimer's Association – Georgia Chapter, 41 Perimeter Center East, Suite 550, Atlanta, GA 30346.

 

The family would like to send a special thank you to the Oaks at Ashton Hills for the outstanding care and love Mrs. Upton received from everyone - especially the Horizon's Memory Care Unit.

Sybil S. Gibbs

Sybil S. Gibbs of Covington, passed away Friday, July 24, 2020, at the age of 93. Mrs. Gibbs was a lifelong member of North Covington United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School. She was a dedicated worker with Belk Department store, City of Covington, City of Covington Police Department and Newton General Hospital where she was one of the original Candy Strippers. Mrs. Gibbs loved her family and grandchildren dearly. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, H.A. "Jack" Gibbs, Jr.; parents, Willie B. and Clara B. Smith; sister, Willie Pearl Hunt; brother, Jack Smith.  

 

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, H.A. "Jack" Gibbs, III, and wife, Gwen, Brenda G. Martin and husband, Paul, Greg A. Gibbs; grandchildren and their spouses, Mark and Jen Gibbs, Michael and Lindy Gibbs, Pam and Russell Brooks, Mandi and Spencer Jones, Jennifer and Charles Loncon, Allie and Brandon Kinard, Megan Gibbs and Joe Madsen; ten great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Kendra Slater, of Sugar Hill, GA, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2020, at the age of 34. Kendra was a healing spiritual life coach to many. She handcrafted candles, necklaces, and cleansing soaps for her spiritual healing work, and with great success, sold these items from her online store. Kendra was preceded in death by her brother, Tyrone Slater.

 

Left to cherish Kendra's memory and her life's work is her husband of 6 years, Ramon Kizzie; parents, Donald and Sylvia L. Slater of Duluth, GA; sisters and brother-in-law, Donna and Isaiah Scruggs of Hahira, GA, Tabitha Slater, Faye Slater, both of Atlanta, GA; as well as brother and sister-in-law, Roderick and Totiztte Slater of Ft. Pierce, FL.

Howard Hooten

Howard Hooten of Covington, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2020, at the age of 80.  Mr. Hooten proudly served his country in the National Guard. He enjoyed spending his time at the home he built, front porch swinging and watching his favorite westerns with John Wayne and Clint Eastwood. For many years, Mr. Hooten was a painter before working for Blue Circle Rock Quarry. He loved his children and his dogs – especially Foxy. Mr. Hooten was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Maren Hooten, Quiney Hooten; brothers, Henry Hooten, Perry Hooten, Wayne Hooten.

 

Survivors include his daughters, Stacey Hooten, Melissa Hooten, Brittany Hooten; sons and daughter-in-law, Ronnie Hooten, Reggie and Star Hooten, Chris Hooten; brother, Ed Hooten; as well as several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

obit for James "Jim" N. Hollingsworth

James "Jim" N. Hollingsworth, of Conyers, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2020, at the age of 76. Jim spent most of his life as a resident of Conyers, GA. He was an educator with the Chatham County School System for nine years before he chose a different career path. Jim went to work for Gate's Rubber Company and retired after 20 years of loyal service. He approached life with excitement and his most admirable qualities were his easygoing nature and his fun-loving personality. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers.

 

Left to carry on in his memory is his wife of 33 years, Phyllis Hollingsworth; one brother; as well as his brother-in-law, David Kerr.  

 

A visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday, July 23, 2020, from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington.

Pattie N. Borders of Oxford, passed away Tuesday, July 14, 2020, at the age of 81. Mrs. Borders was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church, in Covington, where she sang in the choir and previously a member at Decatur Presbyterian Church. She was a graduate of Decatur High School and the University of North Georgia. In her spare time, she loved playing the piano, working crossword puzzles and enjoyed listening to classical music. Mrs. Borders was preceded in death by her parents, James and Lucille Newton.

 

Survivors include her loving husband of 52 years, Homer P. Borders; daughters and sons-in-law, Luci and Steve Leach, Cindy and Jason Waasdorp; grandchildren, Parker and Leslie Leach, Andrew Leach, Anna Leach, Lucas Waasdorp, Leo Waasdorp.

Jeff Lamb

Jeff Lamb of Covington, passed away Thursday, July 9, 2020, at the age of 48. Jeff was a 1989 graduate of Newton County High School and a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed many sports including playing disc golf with "The Girls". He especially liked cheering on his favorite teams, the Braves and Falcons. Jeff and his wife, Robin, were each other's world. He will be remembered as a loving and caring husband and father, who will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Larry Lamb; sisters, Terri Coggin, Toni Eason; step-dad, Donald Griffin; father-in-law Billy Lindsey.

obit for Robert (Bobby) Masdon, Sr.

Robert (Bobby) Masdon, Sr., of Conyers, passed away Thursday, July 9, 2020, at the age of 81. Mr. Masdon had a magnetic personality whose animated storytelling and amazing humor easily captured the attention of those around him. He had a natural inclination to make life easier for others, and he was a caring family man. Mr. Masdon's grandchildren and great-grandchildren earned a special place in his heart! In his free time, he liked to travel and his favorite get-away was Las Vegas. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Jacqueline Marie Masdon; parents, John and Irene (Vaughn) Masdon.

Bessie Rae Helms, of Covington, passed away Thursday, July 9, 2020, at the age of 91. Mrs. Helms liked to work with her hands and was known for her love of gardening and a well-kept yard. She had a knack for being able to grow most anything and her favorite plants were African violets and Christmas cacti. Mrs. Helms also enjoyed crocheting and working puzzles. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Helms; parents, William and Mary Hughes; sisters, Mellonae Willis, Martha Alexander; and brother, Mascus Hughes.

 

The memories Mrs. Helms created will remain close in the hearts of many, especially her daughters and son-in-law, Linda and Andy Anderson, Debra Brooks; grandchildren, Eric Anderson, Nicole Foster, Melissa and Kelly Williams, Nathan Brooks, Micah Brooks; great-grandchildren, Carrie, Dillan, Brady, Anna, Lillian; sisters and brother-in-law,  Frances Wilson, Becky and Max Willoughby; and sister-in-law, Ann Hughes.

Alma Grace Meikle

Alma Grace Meikle of Covington, passed away Tuesday, July 7, 2020, at the age of 83. Born in Highgate, St. Mary, Jamaica, Mrs. Meikle grew up in Kingston where she owned and operated a lingerie factory until 1976, when she immigrated to The Bronx, New York. After her move to New York, she became a nurse working for several years at Montefiore Hospital where she retired. Mrs. Meikle then moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, in 1988, and then to Covington, Georgia, in 2005. She was a God-fearing woman of the Pentecostal faith whose testament of Christianity was always exhibited while helping anyone in need. Mrs. Meikle was preceded in death by her son, Owen Meikle; parents, Victor and Alice (Wright) Campbell; and 19 siblings.

 

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Carl McDonald; sons and daughters-in-law, Trevor and Pauline Meikle, Anthony and Doreen Meikle; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Vera Hurd; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

 A Funeral Service for Mrs. Meikle will be held Saturday, July 18, 2020, 2:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends are invited to visit with the family at the funeral home, one hour prior to her service, from 1:00 – 2:00 P.M.

obit for Jerry Hope Woods

Jerry Hope Woods, of Covington, passed away Saturday, July 4, 2020, at the age of 77. Mr. Woods loved the Lord and was a longtime member of Belmont Baptist Church. He was a gentle and kind soul whose capacity for helping others was endless. Mr. Woods was happiest when spending time with family, and his favorite hobby was model trains. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hope Oxford and Jessie Mae Woods

 

 

Survivors include his wife, Carla Woods; sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and April Woods, Joey and Christine Woods, daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Tim Cissner; grandchildren, Steven Woods, Ciara Cissner, Trish Woods, Joey Cissner, Hannah Woods, Hunter Woods, PJ Cissner, Christian Woods; great-grandchildren, Daniel Cissner, Freya Chastain; as well as additional great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

 

A memorial service will take place at a later date.

obit for Peggy Ann (Clark) Campbell

 

Peggy Ann (Clark) Campbell of Covington, formerly of Decatur, passed away Saturday, July 4, 2020, at the age of 86. Mrs. Campbell had an appreciation for the simple things in life. She loved listening to music and dancing, and she enjoyed reading, gardening, and working in her yard. Mrs. Campbell was preceded in death by her husband, David Campbell; and son, Ken Campbell.

 

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter and son-in-law, Devie and Tony Burchette; four grandchildren; as well as six great-grandchildren.

 

A private family memorial service and final burial will take place at a later date in order to have Mrs. Campbell laid to rest alongside her husband, David, at Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2617 Vinson Highway, in Milledgeville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Abbey Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 68, Social Circle, GA 30025.

Updated obit for Dorothea "Dee" Hyatt

Dorothea "Dee" Hyatt of Conyers, passed away Thursday, July 2, 2020, at the age of 82. Mrs. Hyatt was a resident of Rockdale County since 1972. An avid dog lover, she was Treasurer of the Conyers Kennel Club and a breeder of Shih Tzus and King Charles Cavaliers. Mrs. Hyatt enjoyed traveling, especially with her husband, James, and their most memorable destinations were Japan and Germany. She shared a special bond with her grandchildren and adored her great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hyatt will be missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Hyatt; parents, Leo Joseph and Dorothy (Hassett) Klassen.

 

Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Susanna Hyatt, Gretchen and Barry Landau, Mary Blount; grandchildren, Elyse Landau, Kayla and Brooks Holloway; great-grandchildren, Jayden Holloway, Mack James Holloway; brothers and sister-in-law, Michael and Linda Klassen, Anthony Klassen; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
