Obit - Nell Haralson

Nell Haralson of Covington, passed away August 23, 2012, at the age of 84. She enjoyed painting, reading, gardening, going out to eat, and visiting the beach. Mrs. Haralson loved her family dearly, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Fletcher Haralson; and her parents, David and Bonnie (Moffet) Kleckley.

 

Survivors include her sons, Hugh Haralson, Bob Haralson; daughter, Susan Reed, all of Covington; granddaughter, Bonnie Hutchinson; great-grandchild, Hayden Bonds, both of Alpharetta; sister, Jean Shaw; several nieces and nephews.

 

A Graveside Service for Mrs. Haralson will be held Sunday, August 26, 2012, 3:00 PM, at New Covington Cemetery, with Rev. J. Clifton Brown officiating. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Sunday, August 26, from 1:30-3:00 PM.



Obit - Gerald Lamar "Bud" Hipps

 
GERALD LAMAR "BUD" HIPPS
 
Mr. Gerald Lamar "Bud" Hipps, 86, of Mansfield passed away August 21, 2012.  He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle.  He loved his family and will be greatly missed.  He loved fishing with his grandson, working in his garage, and spending time with his family.  He was also devoted to serving his country.  At the age of 16, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Bud joined the Marines and fought with the 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division.  He stood guard while the flag was raised on Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima.  Bud was wounded in action on the first day he 'hit the beach' and after receiving medical treatment, he insisted on rejoining his division.  He was decorated with a Purple Heart and numerous other military commendations for his service.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Ollie Mae Hipps, his father and step-mother, Bartow and Olla Belle Hipps, and sister, Margaret Hipps.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 66 years, Beverly "June" Hipps, sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Diane Hipps, Terry and Vickie Hipps, all of Mansfield, Mike and Diana Hipps of Social Circle; sister, Mary Edwards of Islamorada, FL; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Hipps will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, August 25, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home with Dr. Randy Reese officiating.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Friday, August 24, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.  Flowers are accepted or memorial donations may be made to New Rocky Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 190 Rocky Creek Road, Mansfield, GA  30055.

Rev. Elvin E. "Manny" Fuller, 65, of Tampa, FL, passed away August 21, 2012. Manny served in the U.S. Navy, member F&AM Lodge #105, Showmen Shrine Club #133 and Showmen Association #1663.

 

He is survived by his companion, James Hayes; 2 sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.

 

A Graveside Service for Manny will be held Saturday, August 25, 2012, 4:00 PM, at Oxford Historical Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held Thursday, August 23, 6:00-8:00 PM, at Swilley Funeral Home, 1602 W. Waters Ave., in Tampa, FL.



Obit - Sondra Sullivan

Sondra (Sandy) Sullivan of Covington passed away August 18, 2012, at the age of 80.  Sandy was a practicing registered nurse for 40 years. The last 17 years, were as a Nurse Practitioner at the Emory Winship Clinic. Mrs. Sullivan was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Bella (Bergman) Hymes.

 

Survivors include her husband, Richard Sullivan of Covington; daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Robert Herren of Covington; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Susan Sullivan of Cumming, David and Elizabeth Sullivan of Tucker; 7 grandchildren.

 

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Roberto Orellana at St. Augustine's Catholic Church, in Covington, Thursday, August 30, 2012, 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations may be made, in honor of Mrs. Sullivan, to a charity of your choice.

Obit - Michael McGee

Michael Edward McGee, Jr., of Covington, died August 19, 2012, at the age of 32. Michael was a published author of poetry and short stories; and a member of the Who's Who of America Organization. He enjoyed reading, Anime, and attending Dragon*Con conventions. He loved cats, and often volunteered with animal rescue. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Olga McGee; and his grandfather, Robert Hicks.

Obit - Dorothy Lassiter Steele

DOROTHY LASSITER STEELE

 

Dorothy Lassiter Steele passed away August 20, 2012, at her home in Covington.  She was 86 years of age at the time of her death. Born in Newton County to the late Elwood and Georgia Lassiter, Mrs. Steele graduated with honors from Covington High School in 1942.  After graduating from the University of Georgia, she began teaching at Porterdale, where she taught fifth and sixth grades for most of her teaching career.  She was a member of First Baptist Church in Covington and carried her love for teaching into her church work, having taught Sunday School for many years.  She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a friend to many.  She was a loving home maker and enjoyed working with flowers.  Mrs. Steele was preceded in death by her son, Hugh Steele, Jr.; parents, Elwood Gray and Georgia (Salter) Lassiter; brothers, E.G. Lassiter, Luke Lassiter, William Lassiter; and sister, Gladys Vaughn.

 

Mrs. Steele is survived by her husband of 65 years, Hugh Steele; daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Wayne Parrott; grandson, Ben Rivers and wife Mandy; great-granddaughter, Kayleigh Rivers; sister, Velma Prescott, all of Covington; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Steele will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, August 22, at First Baptist Church in Covington, with Rev. Len Strozier and Rev. Jack Wilson officiating.  Interment will follow in High Point Baptist Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Tuesday, August 21 from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.

Obit - Barbara Greathouse


Barbara (Nanny) Greathouse, of Oxford, passed away on August 17, 2012, at the age of 67.  Mrs. Greathouse was a member of Lighthouse World Outreach Center.  She loved making banners for churches and she enjoyed working in her flower garden. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend to many. Mrs. Greathouse was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Lela (Hodges) Arrington; and her sister, Debra Davis.

Debra Ann Parker of Covington, passed away August 17, 2012, at the age of 48. Debra was a member of The Church at Covington, and was very active in mission work. She received a degree, in Business Administration, from Georgia Perimeter College; and was a former employee of the Rockdale County Business Licensing Office. Debra loved spending time with her granddaughter, nieces, and nephew. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Kayson James Parker; and her father, Dana Albert Slemp.

Nevin Jack Standard of Oxford, passed away August 16, 2012, at the age of 93. Mr. Standard was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served his country during World War II. He attended Sewell United Methodist Church and North Covington United Methodist Church. He retired from Belk Department Store, in 1994, after 35 years. Mr. Standard was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend to many. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlie Dent (Dial) Standard; and his parents, Benjamine H. and Kattie Bell (Gray) Standard.

Obit - Mr. Adell Digby

Mr. Adell Digby, passed away August 16, 2012, at the age of 91.  Mr. Digby was briefly employed by Bibb Manufacturing Company, before opening Digby Trim Shop which he owned and operated for 28 years.  He ran the Porterdale Recreation Department for a number of years, and served as custodian for County Line Baptist Church for 17 years.  While at County Line Baptist he taught the 4th grade Sunday School Class.  He enjoyed deer hunting, and often composed and wrote lyrics, music, poems, and short stories.  He played several musical instruments and sang christian and country music.  He was a loving father for 72 years, and loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren dearly.  Mr. Digby was preceded in death, Sarah Alice (McGiboney) Digby; and his parents, Robert Lee and Berda Mae (Walton) Digby.

 

Survivors include children and spouses, Sidney Lamar and Julie Digby of Macon, Michael J. (Mickey) and Dee Dee H. Digby of Jackson, Gary Lee and Sue Digby of Covington, Jacqueline (Jackie) L. Digby and Paul Jones of Covington; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Katherine W. Alliston of Oxford passed away August 15, 2012, at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle.  Mrs. Alliston was 96 years of age at the time of her death.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Alliston, and her parents, George Murza and Ovie Elizabeth (Freeman) Wilson.  Mrs. Alliston was accomplished at crocheting, needlepoint, and cross stitching.  She was a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church and was retired from Belk Department Store in Covington.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Evelyn T. Daniel of Monticello; son, Richard G. Alliston of Oxford; grandchildren, Angelea Daniel Jones of Eatonton, and Russell Eugene Daniel, Jr. of Monticello.

Obit - Floyd Eugene Robertson, Sr.

Floyd Eugene Robertson, Sr., passed away August 14, 2012, at the age of 75.  Mr. Robertson was a member of Harvest Baptist Church and active in the Men's Senior Adult Sunday School Class and Harvest Senior Group.  He volunteered for the food ministry at the church.  He served with United States Air Force during the Korean War.  Mr. Robertson was an avid University of Tennessee fan and NASCAR racing fan.  He was preceded in death by his daughter, Debora Ann Page and his son, Benjamin Charles Ethridge.

 

Survivors include his wife, Melba Robertson; children and their spouses, Floyd Eugene (Gene) Robertson, Jr., and Rosa of Beaufort, SC, Cheryl Drew of Brewer, ME, Robert E. T.J. Bell of Monticello, passed away August 13, 2012, at the age of 26. T.J. loved his son, Hunter, dearly, and loved spending time with his family. Obit - Dr. James William (Bill) Lassiter

Dr. James William (Bill) Lassiter, 92, of Covington, passed away Sunday, August 12, 2012, at Dogwood Forest Assisted Living, in Gainesville, GA. He was born May 28, 1920, in Covington, to the late Elwood Gray and Georgia (Salter) Lassiter. Dr. Lassiter graduated from Covington High School and received his bachelor's degree in animal husbandry from the University of Georgia in 1941. He received a reserve commission as a 2nd Lt. in the 9th Calvary, one of two regiments of the Buffalo Soldiers in the US Army. In 1943, he was ordered to the Pacific and served on Guam until World War II ended. He retired from the reserves as a Major in 1953. October 5, 1947, Bill married Mary Kitchens, and in 1951 they returned to Athens and the University of Georgia where he received his master's degree in Animal Nutrition in 1952, followed by his PhD in Animal Science in 1954 from the University of Illinois. Dr. Lassiter joined the University of Georgia, where he received numerous national and international awards, authored and presented many scientific publications, nationally and internationally. Dr. Lassiter was the second recipient of the prestigious Gamma Sigma Delta Outstanding Teacher Award at the University of Georgia, and also received the American Society of Animal Science Distinguished Teacher Award. He is listed in American Men of Science, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Leaders in American Science. Dr. Lassiter co-authored a college textbook "Animal Nutrition". After retiring, he enjoyed gardening and researching family history, writing genealogy books on the Lassiter and Kitchens families. Dr. Lassiter maintained his trademark sense of humor, which will be remembered by all who knew him. Dr. Lassiter was preceded in death by his sister, Gladys Vaughn; and brothers, E.G. Lassiter, Jr. and Luke R. Lassiter.

 

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Kitchens Lassiter; daughter, Lynda L. Haynie (Ken); son, James William (Jim) Lassiter, Jr. (Joie); sisters, Dorothy Steele (Hugh) and Velma Prescott; grandchildren, Kimberly Hughes, Jason, Brian and Katie Lassiter; 5 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

 

Friends and family are invited to attend the memorial graveside service Tuesday, August 14, 2012, 3:00 PM, at Lawnwood Memorial Park, 1111 Access Road, in Covington. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, one hour prior to the service, from 2:00-3:00 PM. Obit - Mary Ellington

Mary Henry Ellington, a lifelong resident of Newton County, passed away August 9, 2012, at the age of 87. She was a member of High Point Baptist Church. Mrs. Ellington taught Sunday School for 70 years, sang with her husband, in the church choir, for several years, and was a member of the Young at Heart Club at her church. She always enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, and was a wonderful cook. She was known for her delicious coconut cakes and cheesecakes. Mrs. Ellington was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, Spence and Emma Kate (Steele) Henry.

 

Survivors include her husband, Howard G. Ellington of Covington; children and their spouses, Brenda and Wayne Edge of Covington, Dennis and Lelia Raines of Conyers, John and Teresa Raines of Covington, Randy and Lynda Ellington of Greenville, SC, Don and Marcia Ellington of Hoover, AL, Bob and Karen Ellington of Evergreen, AL; sisters and brother-in-law, Beverley Hardegree, Elaine and Dr. Michael Pulliam, all of Covington; grandchildren, Brent and Amanda Edge, Brandon and Heather Edge, Lori and Jeff Cher, Kingsley Raines, Mandi and Aaron Roberts, Chelsea Raines, Chase Raines, Emma Raines, Mary and Jeff Johnson, Anna and John Broomfield, Leigh Ellington, Sean Ellington, David Ellington; and 12 great-grandchildren.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Ellington will be held Saturday, August 11, 2012, 2:00 PM, at High Point Baptist Church, in Covington, with Rev. David Marshall, Dr. Jim Martin, and Rev. Tom McElhany officiating, and interment following in the church cemetery. Flowers are accepted, or donations may be made to High Point Baptist Church, 12025 Highway 36, Covington, GA 30016.

Obit - James "Buddy" "Fats" Harper

James V. Harper of Oxford, passed away August 9, 2012, at the age of 69. "Buddy", or "Fats", as he was often called, worked for Lithonia Lighting for more than 35 years, as well as a sub-contractor with AT&T for 10 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. Mr. Harper loved his family, and always enjoyed their family cookouts. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Eva (Sanders) Harper.

 

Survivors include his wife, Janet M. Harper of Oxford; daughters and sons-in-law, Terri and Paul Richards of Temple, GA, Melisa and Mark Cordova of Jonesboro; son, James Kenneth Harper of Conyers; step-son, Larry W. Atkins of Conyers; step-daughter, Kyle Poteet of Conyers; 6 grandchildren, 5 step-grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 7 step-great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda Starnes of Conyers, Peggy Thompson of Rome, Debra and Jim Walsh, James Webb, all of Carrollton; many wonderful nieces and nephews.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Harper will be held Saturday, August 18, 2012, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Hulen Knight, Rev. David Collins, and nephew, Billy Thompson officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, one hour prior to the service, from 1:00-2:00 PM. Obit - Mike Lowe

Mike Lowe of Oxford, passed away August 8, 2012, at the age of 50. Mike was a veteran of the United States Navy. He worked as an electronic technician, for Atlanta Repair Depot, for more than 25 years. He was a Ham Radio Operator, and loved working on electronics even as a hobby. He enjoyed camping and watching the History channel. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Verdell Lowe; and his step-brother, Richie Dryman.

 

Survivors include his wife, Melanie Page Lowe of Oxford, sons and daughter-in-law, Branden and Samantha Lowe of Monticello, Bryce Lowe of Oxford; grandson, Gabriel Blake Lowe; mother and step-father, Charlotte and Richard Dryman of Greensboro, NC, step-brother, Chris Dryman; step-sister, Elizabeth Deifell; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mike will be held Saturday, August 11, 2012, 12:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Jason Parr officiating, and interment following in Crest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, from 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM.

Obit - Barbara Aiken

Barbara Annette Aiken died peacefully with her family at her side on August 5, 2012. She was born in Jackson, GA, on October 18, 1932. She was the daughter of the late Howard and Ruth Greer of Jackson. In 1949 she married William Roy Aiken, Jr., of Covington. He predeceased her in 2011. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Allison Michelle Aiken in 1984 and brothers, Tommy Greer of Jackson and Billy Greer of Roswell, GA.  She was a dedicated mother of four children and was a constant and supportive companion to her late husband Bill. She spent the best years of her life traveling with her late husband, Col. W. R. Aiken, Jr., and he would often refer to her as the real "General." Barbara was very active with the U.S. Army Officers Wives Club and was a life time member of Red Oak United Methodist Church of Covington, GA, where she enjoyed her time participating in the activities and functions of the United Methodist Women, Recycled Teenagers, and Red Hat Ladies. To all who knew her, she was the true anchor of the Aiken family.

 

Barbara is survived by her sons, Ron Aiken and his wife Sherri Aiken of Covington, Tim Aiken and his wife Pam Aiken of Covington; daughter, Susan Aiken and Mark Slaughter of Covington; eight grandchildren, Chad Aiken of Covington, Ashlyn Aiken of Covington, Greer Aiken and his wife Leah Aiken of Macon, GA, Jason Robbins and his wife Nancy Robbins of Loganville, GA, Andrea Robbins Delacruz and her husband Jorge Delacruz of Covington, Sarah Laine Slaughter of Covington, Cindy Dollander and her husband Mike Dollander of Watkinsville, GA, and Alan Dismuke of Albany, GA; eight great-grandchildren, Dylan Robbins, Alyssa Claire Robbins, Tristan Delacruz, Liam Delacruz ,William Peek, Dreyton, Payne and Addy Kate Dollander; sister, Mary McEachern and Joe Melendi of St. Petersburg Beach, FL; brother, Bob Greer and wife Betty Jo Greer of Cumming, GA; and numerous members of extended family.

 

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, August 7, 2012, 3:00 PM, at Red Oak United Methodist Church, in Covington, with Pastor Miguel Velez officiating, and interment following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Monday, August 6, from 5:00-7:00 PM.

Obit - Tammy Pauline Roper Dvorak

Tammy Pauline Roper Dvorak of Oxford, passed away August 2, 2012, after complications during surgery. She was 42 years old at the time of her death. Tammy served Covington and Newton County as an emergency dispatcher for four years. Her main interest was being a mother, and it saddens us that Tammy left so soon. She is loved, and will be greatly missed by her friends, her family, and the entire community. Tammy was preceded in death by her father, Claud T. Roper.

Survivors include her daughter, Savannah Lynn Dvorak; son, Trenton Thomas Dvorak; mother, Cathy Roper; sister, Kimberly Wheatley, all of Oxford; brother, David Roper of LaPlace, IL; numerous family and friends.

Funeral Services for Tammy will be held Monday, August 6, 2012, 3:00 PM, at Central Community Church, in Covington, with Rev. Darrell Allen officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church Monday, one hour prior to the service, from 2:00-3:00 PM.

Obit - Melvin Whaley

Melvin R. Whaley of Covington, passed away July 31, 2012, at the age of 71. Mr. Whaley was a veteran of the United States Army, and served his country during the Vietnam War. He worked for Mobil Chemical for 25 years, before retiring as a supervisor at the age of 54. He enjoyed NASCAR, golf, and wrestling. Mr. Whaley was a loving, devoted father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Dixie (Sutton) Whaley; and his son, Terry McCullers.

 

Survivors include his life companion, Dot Whaley of Covington; children and their spouses, Renita and Kimberly Whaley, Leisa and Ben Allen, all of Loganville, Joan Dollar of Covington, Jean and Gary Wilkerson of Porterdale, Harvey McCullers of Covington; brothers, Fred Whaley, Troy Whaley, both of Chatsworth, GA; grandchildren, Shara McCullers Greer, Heather Henry, Katie Dollar, AJ Allen; 5 great-grandchildren.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Whaley will be held Saturday, August 4, 2012, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Gary Wilkerson officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, one hour prior to the service, from 1:00-2:00 PM.
