GERALD LAMAR "BUD" HIPPS
Mr. Gerald Lamar "Bud" Hipps, 86, of Mansfield passed away August 21, 2012. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. He loved his family and will be greatly missed. He loved fishing with his grandson, working in his garage, and spending time with his family. He was also devoted to serving his country. At the age of 16, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Bud joined the Marines and fought with the 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division. He stood guard while the flag was raised on Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima. Bud was wounded in action on the first day he 'hit the beach' and after receiving medical treatment, he insisted on rejoining his division. He was decorated with a Purple Heart and numerous other military commendations for his service. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ollie Mae Hipps, his father and step-mother, Bartow and Olla Belle Hipps, and sister, Margaret Hipps.
Survivors include his loving wife of 66 years, Beverly "June" Hipps, sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Diane Hipps, Terry and Vickie Hipps, all of Mansfield, Mike and Diana Hipps of Social Circle; sister, Mary Edwards of Islamorada, FL; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Mr. Hipps will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, August 25, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home with Dr. Randy Reese officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Friday, August 24, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Flowers are accepted or memorial donations may be made to New Rocky Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 190 Rocky Creek Road, Mansfield, GA 30055.
