Obit - William "Bill" Hoffman

Ralph William "Bill" Hoffman passed away in his Covington home, September 30, 2014, at the age of 90. Mr. Hoffman was a member and former deacon of the First Baptist Church, in Covington, where he also served as past chairman of the Board, Sunday School teacher and superintendent of the Intermediate Department. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corp during World War II. In addition to his service to his country, he supported his local community in various roles including: board member at Newton General Hospital for ten years, chairman of the Newton-Rockdale District Atlanta Area Council Boy Scouts of America, senior vice commander of the American Legion Post 32, past president of the Covington-Newton County Chamber of Commerce and treasurer of the Rotary Club before being elected president in February 1962. Mr. Hoffman was a founding member of the First National Bank of Newton County where he served 15 years as president. Additionally, he was a member of the Covington Elks Lodge # 1806. He and his wife, Betty Jean, operated the local radio station WGFS for 25 years. Mr. Hoffman was a certified master electrician for both commercial and residential buildings. He enjoyed going to Waffle House, cutting his grass and traveling – especially his annual snow skiing trips with his family. Mr. Hoffman was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. He was loved and will be greatly missed by his family, friends and the entire community. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean (Vaughan) Hoffman; and his parents, Ralph William and Emily (Guild) Hoffman, Sr.

 

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Steve Temples of Covington; son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Kendall Hoffman of Chelsea, AL; grandchildren, Heather and Chris Day of Monroe, Krista and Matt Holbrook of Monticello, Jake Hoffman, Cade Hoffman, both of Auburn, AL; great-grandchildren, Harli Hipps, Mason Day; brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Ann Hoffman of Decatur, AL; sister-in-law, Marie Hoffman of Melbourne, FL; his longtime friend and companion, Ann Hodges; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Graveside Service for Mr. Hoffman will be held Thursday, October 2, 2014, 11:00 AM, at Lawnwood Memorial Park, 1111 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Jack Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church, in Covington, Wednesday, October 1, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. Obit - Mildred Maloy

Mildred "Mrs. Millie" Maloy, a lifelong resident of Porterdale, passed away September 27, 2014, at the age of 95. She was a member of Porterdale Baptist Church and the Porterdale Woman's Club. Mrs. Millie was known for her sharp mind and quick wit, and therefore gained the nickname, "The General". She loved her family dearly and especially cherished her role as a grandmother. She was loved and will be greatly missed by her family. Mrs. Millie was preceded in death by her husband, Carl B. Maloy; parents, Leo and Candace Shaw; and her brother, Marshall "Pete" Shaw.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Carlyn Maloy McConnell and her husband, Jerry; grandchildren and their spouses, Thomas Shay and Jeanette Hopkins, Walter and Beth McConnell; great-grandchildren, Emily Shay Hopkins, Rachael McConnell, Walter McConnell, III; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Beth Shaw; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Annelle Townsend

Annelle Townsend, of Oxford, passed away September 26, 2014 at the age of 82.  Married to Grady Townsend for 59 years, the couple honeymooned in Daytona, and visited there every year around their anniversary.  Mrs. Townsend enjoyed shopping, but most of all she loved being with her family.  She was a member of Heritage Hills Baptist Church in Conyers and will be remembered as a great cook – always preparing more than enough.  Mrs. Townsend was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Sally Mae Davis; brothers, Buford Davis, R.H. Davis; and sister, Willene Royal.

 

Survivors include her beloved husband, Grady Townsend of Oxford; daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Larry Cheek of Oxford, Gloria and Steve Lee of Conyers; grandchildren, Lan and Chelsea Moody, Garett and Kayleigh Moody, Amy and Kevin Wade, Dottie Rowe; great-grandchildren, Ashton Wade, Lance Bennington, Landon Moody, Karleigh Rose Moody, and expecting two more; sister, Agnes Canup; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Vera K. Stalvey, of Covington, passed away September 26, 2014, at the age of 94.  Mrs. Stalvey lived in Rome, GA until she moved to Covington in 1975.  She was a member of Covington Church of God in Covington, and a former member or East Rome Church of God, where she taught Sunday School.  Mrs. Stalvey enjoyed quilting, crocheting and ceramics, but her focus was being a homemaker.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Norwood A. Stalvey; grandsons, Scott Stalvey and Tony Stalvey; great-grandson, Matthew Stalvey; parents, Randy and Mary Louise (Morgan) Wright

Anne Davis, age 79, of Covington, passed away September 24, 2014. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and playing bridge with her bridge club. Mrs. Davis cherished her family, loved spending time with them and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her great-granddaughter, Ansley Gaddis.

Tina Hudgins

Tina Hudgins, of Porterdale, passed away September 20, 2014, at the age of 52.  Tina was preceded in death by her father, Charles C. Wise; brothers, Kenny Wise and Gregory Alan Hudgins.  She loved her family, all animals, and had a very tender heart for her cats.  She enjoyed her job, and never met a stranger.  Tina was a very strong-hearted person who never gave up.  She was a good cook and made wonderful fried green tomatoes.  She also loved to travel, especially to Panama City.  Tina will be remembered as a very free spirit who lived life to the fullest.

 

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Ladonna Smith and grandson, Caleb Smith, all of Covington; mother, Sandra Wise of Porterdale; sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Lee Yi of Porterdale; brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Love Wise, of Covington; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mildred Parish Walden

Mildred Parish Walden, age 87, of Covington, passed away September 20, 2014.  Mrs. Walden was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, W.H. (Bill) Walden.  In addition to being an avid sports fan, she enjoyed cooking, especially chocolate cakes.  Mrs. Walden will be remembered as a good Christian woman, who devoted her life to her husband, children, and grandchildren.

Eva Callaway

Eva Callaway, age 82, passed away September 18, 2014 at her home in Covington.  Mrs. Callaway was very creative and used that talent painting, doing needlepoint, sewing and cooking for her family.  She also enjoyed singing and gardening.  Mrs. Callaway loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was married to the love of her life for 47 years.  Preceding her in death were her parents, Robert E. and Evelyn C. (Weller) Rucker; and brothers, Roy Wilcher and Bobby Rucker.

 

Survivors include her husband, Howell Callaway of Covington; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Lynne and Richard Jewell of Covington; grandchildren, Casey G. Hattie Sue Meeks of Porterdale, passed away September 13, 2014, at the age of 65. Hattie Sue was a caring person, who was always willing to help anyone in need. She loved her family dearly, and cherished the time spent with her children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Tina Sue Meeks; granddaughter, Teshia Barrington; and her parents, Dewey Lee and Thelma H. Meeks.

Obit - Frank Richardson

Frank Richardson of Covington, passed away September 15, 2014, at the age of 73. Mr. Richardson proudly served his country in the United States National Guard. During his service, he worked for the United States Postal Service, for 33 years, before his retirement in 1996. He was a faithful member at Porterdale Baptist Church, where he actively served as Deacon, and had previously taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. He loved sports, but most importantly, he cherished his family and spending time with them. Mr. Richardson was preceded in death by his parents, Giles and Mattie Ruth (Casteel) Richardson; and his brothers, Danny, Charlie and Billy Richardson.

 

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Sandra (Sullivan) Richardson; sons, Danny Richardson, Mike Richardson, Rod Richardson; grandchildren, Michael, Molly, Matthew, Levi, Emmalee, Hanna and Blaire Richardson; sister, Margaret Mitchell; brother, Hubert Richardson; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Penelope (Penny) Cagle Rutledge

Penelope (Penny) Cagle Rutledge, age 63, of Porterdale, passed away September 13, 2014, following an extensive illness. She attended Porterdale Baptist Church, and enjoyed crocheting, reading, cooking and listening to music. She especially enjoyed listening to her grandson, Dylan, play the piano, and also spending time with her other grandson, Eli. Ms. Rutledge devoted her life to caring for her parents, daughter and grandsons. She had a great sense of humor and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Bill and Maybell Cagle; and her sister, Peggy Batchelor.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Ivy Rutledge Ingram of Porterdale; grandsons, William Dylan Anson Ingram, Elijah Dale Ingram; brother, Charles Cagle of Covington; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Robert L. Jordan, age 81, of Covington, passed away September 14, 2014.  He loved fishing and was a western buff who enjoyed watching western films and attending western festivals.  Mr. Jordan will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Obit - Betty Patterson

Betty Patterson of Porterdale, passed away September 11, 2014, at the age of 76. She enjoyed finding yard sales and flea markets, going to the casinos and traveling to the beach. Mrs. Patterson had an outgoing, caring personality, and she was always wanting to help anyone in need. She loved her family dearly and cherished her time with them. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Patterson; and her parents, Woodrow and Louise (Mitchell) Moon.

Obit - Catherine Crenshaw Berry

Catherine Crenshaw Berry, also affectionately known as "Nanny", passed away September 10, 2014, at the age of 100. She enjoyed cooking, quilting, spending time outdoors and canning vegetables. She owned Berry's Boat Dock, and for more than 72 years, people came expecting to see her sitting on the front porch swing! She never met a stranger. Nanny loved animals, but more than anything, she loved her family and cherished her time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Franklin Berry; sons, Ronald Franklin Berry, Ralph Glenn Berry; parents, Ralph John and Corrine (Ivey) Crenshaw; sisters, Evelyn Marie Crenshaw, Melba Louise Crenshaw; and an infant brother.

Obit - Sara Helen Jordan

Sara Helen Jordan of Covington, passed away September 8, 2014, at the age of 84. Mrs. Jordan was a member of East Newton Baptist Church, where she was active in the choir, her Sunday School class and the Women's Missionary Union. She was a salesperson with various companies, including: Belk, Avon, Jordan's Jean Shop and Eckerd's. Mrs. Jordan had a caring personality and never met a stranger. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law and friend. She cherished her family and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Mrs. Jordan was preceded in death by their son, Larry Stanley (Stan) Jordan; and all six siblings, Joe, Will, Charles, Phil, Kenneth Griffeth and Martha Ann (Griffeth) Garrison.

 

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Alton H. Jordan; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Eric Morgan of Covington; grandchildren, Jeff Jordan and his wife, Amanda, Torri Morgan; great-grandchildren, Chase and Taylor Jordan; sisters-in-law, Hariette Griffeth, Jackie Griffeth, both of Danielsville; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles and Linda Jordan of Commerce; as well as several special nieces and nephews.    

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Jordan will be held Friday, September 12, 2014, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Mike Hardy and Rev. Dan Fuller officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, September 11, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.

 

Obit - Betty Christian Thomas

Betty Christian Thomas, age 84, of Covington, passed away September 8, 2014. Mrs. Thomas was a faithful member of Bethany Presbyterian Church. She was very active in various church functions, and was a member of the church choir for several years. She was a longtime, dedicated employee of Steele-Jones Insurance Agency, in Covington. Mrs. Thomas enjoyed spending time in her flower garden. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Ralph Thomas; parents, Frank Buford and Ellen Ruth (Cowan) Christian; sisters, Mary Beth Steele, Jean O'Neal; and her brother, Frank E. Christian.

 

Survivors include her sisters-in-law, Ellene Rosser of Covington, Rose Fuller of Conyers, Gladys Woodham of Dallas, Margaret Shaw of Decatur, Bonnie English of Griffin, Evelyn Zimmerman of Virginia; brother-in-law, James Thomas of Cumming; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Thomas will be held Wednesday, September 10, 2014, 4:00 PM, at Bethany Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Daniel J. Commerford and Bob King officiating, and interment following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, Tuesday, September 09, from 7:00 – 8:30 PM. Yosely Adams

Yosely Adams, of Conyers, passed away September 7, 2014, at the age of 28.  Yosely spent most of her life in Chicago and attended the University of Illinois, where she pursued a major in psychology.  She loved the arts, especially painting, drawing and music.  In addition, she enjoyed swimming, roller skating and going to the beach.  She was known for her cooking and loved to entertain family and friends.  Her favorite thing to do in this world was laugh, and she loved making others laugh as well.  Yosely always had a joke ready! 

 

Survivors include her husband, Anderson Adams; parents, Job and Maria del Socorro Villasenor; sister, Deany Delaney; brothers, Daniel Villasenor, Job Villasenor, Jr.; her niece, Evelyn Delaney, and nephew, Jacob Noah Villasenor; as well as her grandparents, Julia Sanchez, Raul and Jacinta Villasenor.

 

A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, September 10, 2014, 11:00 AM, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 2621 GA Highway 20, in Conyers with Rev. Salomon Garcia officiating.  Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Tuesday, September 9, from 6:00 – 9:00 PM.

Obit - Kelen McLeod Reynolds

Kelen McLeod Reynolds of Ellenwood, passed away September 4, 2014, at the age of 29.  Kelen was an ambitious woman, slightly mischievous, who loved life and wanted to experience everything it had to offer. She never met a stranger, and because of her fun, outgoing personality, there was never a dull moment when spending time with her. She enjoyed being outdoors, working with power tools and creating things, had a heart for all kinds of animals and loved anything fun. Kelen loved her family and friends, but more than anything, she cherished her husband and sons. They were the light of her life and will truly miss her.

 

Survivors include her husband, Justin Reynolds; sons, Jack Reynolds – age 9, Hollis Reynolds – age 6, all of Ellenwood; mother, Cindy McLeod; father, Gary McLeod, both of McDonough; sister, Sarah McLeod of Greensboro; brother, Layton McLeod of McDonough; as well as extended family and her many special friends.

Obit - Pauline Harvey

Pauline Harvey of Covington, passed away September 4, 2014, at the age of 74. Mrs. Harvey faithfully attended the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, in Conyers, where she considered her church family like her own. She enjoyed painting, spending time with her family and cooking for them. Mrs. Harvey had a caring spirit and never met a stranger.  She was adored, and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Harvey; parents, James and Eunice (Shannon) Brown; and her sister, Betty Moon.

Obit - Betty Jane Cordell Edwards

Betty Jane Cordell Edwards, age 83, passed away August 31, 2014, at Oxton Village in Social Circle. "Ms. Betty", as she was affectionately known, had been a resident there for the past five years. Betty was born October 4, 1930, in Rockmart, Georgia. Her parents worked in cotton mills around the state, living in Monroe for a time while she was in elementary school, and finally settling in Porterdale where she completed high school. She was very proud of the fact that she had been a cheerleader and voted "Miss Porterdale". While working at the 5 & 10, in Covington, she met her future husband, James L. Edwards. They were married the day after her 21st birthday, October 5, 1951. She worked for a time at Arrow Shirt Company and Bibb Manufacturing, before returning to Bellsouth, where she retired in 1991. Ms. Betty filled her supporting role as a pastor's wife by working with many children in the nurseries of the churches where Jimmy was Pastor. She carried this servant's heart while playing with the children in several of the disaster areas they traveled to while working with the Southern Baptist Disaster Unit. Ms. Betty was loved, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, James Lewis Edwards; parents, John C. and Lillie H. Cordell; sister, Imogene (Mrs. Roy) Shuford; and her brothers, John Lewis Cordell and Alfred Cordell.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Denise E. and Fred W. Love, Jr.; granddaughter, Markie Michelle Love; brother, James "Bo" Cordell; several nieces and nephews; as well as many extended family and friends.

 

Funeral Services for Ms. Betty will be held Wednesday, September 3, 2014, 4:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Jason Johnson officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, two hours prior to her service, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM.

 

The family would like to extend thanks to all the caregivers and workers who have cared for Ms. Betty over the past five years. To the nurses, social workers, chaplains and staff of Abbey Hospice, special thanks for the love and care you have given to us.

 

Obit - Jessie Nell Christian

Jessie Nell Christian, of Porterdale, passed away August 30, 2014 at the age of 98.  Mrs. Christian was a member of Julia A. Porter United Methodist Church and will be remembered as a loving mother who devoted her life to raising her children.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Emory Fred Christian; daughter, Linda Christian Waters; son, Ronald Fred Christian.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Audrey Carolyn and Rick Daniel; son, Emory Mark Christian all of Porterdale; grandchildren, Stephanie Phillips, Stephen Daniel, Jessica Dell; great-grandchildren, Audrey Helen Phillips, Daniel Kane Phillips, Elizabella Grace Daniel, Jonah Dell, Noah Dell; sisters, Jane Alexander of Snellville, Leila Davis of Dublin; several nieces and nephews.

 

A Graveside Service for Mrs. Christian will be held Wednesday, September 3, 2014, 11:00 AM, at Salem United Methodist Cemetery, 3962 Salem Road, Covington, with Rick Daniel officiating.
