Obit - Bryan Daniel (Baldy) Stevenson

Bryan Daniel "Baldy" Stevenson, of Covington, passed away November 30, 2014, at the age of 89.  He proudly served his country during WW II, receiving two Purple Hearts and a Silver Star.  He enjoyed riding on his golf cart with his bloodhound, Elvis, working in his garden and fishing.  Mr. Stevenson loved his children and his grandchildren, and enjoyed spending time with them.  After working for Bibb Manufacturing for 17 years, he began a 17-year second career at Hercules before retiring.  He and his beloved wife, Gracie, were married for 65 years.  Mr. Stevenson was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey D. and Addie (Freeman) Stevenson; grandson, Wade Stevenson; great-granddaughter, Emily Stevenson; sisters, Irene Ingram, Thelma Williams, Dell Wimberly; and brother, Carl Lee Stevenson.

 

Survivors include his wife, Gracie Stevenson of Covington; daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Eddie Bolling of Phenix City, AL; Wanda and Buddy Tucker of Monticello; sons and daughters-in-law, Paul Stevenson and Elaine Owens of Covington, Carl and Vickie Stevenson of Oxford, Timothy Stevenson, James and Vickie Stevenson, all of Covington; 13 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Denia Theurer of Albany, NY; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Stevenson will be held Wednesday, December 3, 2014, 2:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Danny Standard and Cory Stevenson officiating. Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday, December 2, from 6:00 – 9:00 PM.

Dorothy Lyons

Dorothy Lyons, of Covington, GA, formerly of Bluff City, TN, passed away November 29, 2014, at the age of 76.  Mrs. Lyons loved her family and spending time with them.  In addition she enjoyed working in her garden. Before his death, Mrs. Lyons loved spending as much time as she could with her husband.  She was preceded in death by Earl (Bud) Lyons, her husband of 47 years; daughter, Melissa Sue Lyons; and parents, Millard L. and Beulah (McCrary) Taylor.

 

Mrs. Lyons is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Karen and Donnie Boone, Pam Simmons; sons and daughters-in-law, Randy Lyons, Danny and Toni Lyons, Earl, Jr. and Christy Lyons; grandchildren, Myranda Lyons, Gabi Lyons, Stacy McMillan, Courtney Boone, Alan Lyons, Ashley Lyons, Brittany Simmons, Dale Simmons, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Jackson Lowe, Braelynn Simmons, Braxton and Cullen McMillan; sisters, Naomi Lyons, Louise Watson; brothers, Bob Taylor, Alf Taylor; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Lyons will be held Tuesday, December 2, 2014, 10:00 AM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington with Rev. Jeffrey Cantrell officiating and interment following in Eastview Cemetery in Conyers.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, December 1, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.

Betty Tanner Walton

Betty Tanner Walton, of Newborn, passed away November 28, 2014, at the age of 79.  Born in Tifton, she grew up in Payne City Community in Macon, where she attended Miller High School, an all-girls' school.   After graduating, she married and moved to Newborn, where she still lived.  As a very active member of Newborn United Methodist Church, she taught Sunday School for many years, served as UMW Treasurer, sang in the choir, and served on several different church boards.  In addition she was a poll worker for many years.  Mrs. Walton raised two daughters, and enjoyed eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.  She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  Mrs. Walton was preceded in death by her parents, David and Maggie (McMillan) Tanner, as well as a sister, Wilma Fussell.

 

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Sam B. Walton of Newborn; daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and Frank Castallana of Newborn, Ann and Larry Laseter of Atlanta; grandchildren, Courtney and Chris Trost, Lauryn and Casey Wells, Cristina and Joe Franklin, Lindsay and Robby Loew, Phillip Castallana, Sydney Laseter, Levi Laseter, Zachary Laseter; great-grandchildren, Mariah Trost, McLane Franklin, Kennedy Trost, JayLeigh Trost, Stella Franklin, Martha Jean Trost; brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Betty Tanner of Dublin, GA; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Walton will be held Sunday, November 30, 2014, 2:00 PM, at Newborn United Methodist Church, 118 Church Street, in Newborn, with Rev. CeCe Nickolich, Rev. Frank Bernatt, and Rev. Vollie Almand Hicks

Vollie Almand Hicks, of Covington, passed away November 26, 2014, at the age of 78.  Mr. Hicks loved his family and never met a stranger.  He enjoyed helping with Camp Twin Lakes in Rutledge, camping and hunting.  Mr. Hicks was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Jaycees, both in Conyers, as well as the Telephone Pioneer Club.

 

Survivors include his wife, Beverly McClain Hicks of Covington; sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and India Hicks of Loganville, Ronald Hicks of Covington, Mark and Carrie Hicks of Mansfield; grandchildren, Ashley Hicks, Joshua Hicks, Courtney Hicks, Jessica Hicks, Billy Hicks, Tara Hicks, Wyatt Hicks, Matthew Hicks, and Christopher Hicks.

Obit - Otho Lane

Otho Lane of Social Circle, passed away November 26, 2014, at the age of 94. Mr. Lane was a veteran of the United States Navy, proudly defending his country in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Mansfield Baptist Church where he sang in the choir, taught the Joy Sunday School Class and served on the board of Deacons. He was a Gideon, member of Kiwanis and past member and Deacon of Avondale First Baptist Church. While at Avondale, he also taught the junior boys' Sunday School class. Mr. Lane enjoyed spending time outside in his garden. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Elias and Attie (Wetherbee) Lane.

 

Survivors include his wife, Janet B. Lane; daughter and son-in-law, Janet Rebecca and John Knoll of Rosalia, KS; sons and daughters-in-law, Rodney Lane of Newborn, Russell and Lynn Lane of Duluth, Robert and Maximina Lane of Stone Mountain; grandchildren, Kendra Garcia, Kenneth Knoll, Kimberly Moore, Robin Lane; great-grandchildren, Kayden Knoll and Landry Moore.

Maggie Clack

Maggie Clack, of Porterdale, passed away November 22, 2014, at the age of 87.  Mrs. Clack enjoyed cooking, fishing and reading, especially her Bible.  She loved to watch Days of Our Lives and In the Heat of the Night on television.  Mrs. Clack was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Clack; sisters, Dolous, Opal and Elizabeth; as well as four brothers.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Jean Cobb; grandchildren, Roy Peurifoy, Dawn Hubbell, Hope Hartley, Elizabeth Dent; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

 

The family will hold a Memorial Service for Mrs. Clack at a later date.

Obit - Herbert Emil Hess

Herbert Emil Hess, 75, of Jersey, formerly of Kedulen, Germany, passed away November 17th, 2014. Mr. Hess was preceded in death by his parents, Albert J. and Lina (Haase) Hess, and brother, Walter A. Hess.

 

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Kathleen M. Hess of Jersey; step-children, Craig Denomme of Jersey, Ronald Denomme of Jackson, Tina Denomme , Lisa Denomme, both of Monroe, Kristi Klebba of Jersey, and Kim Klebba of Savannah; grandchildren, Chloe Glass, Jeffery Glass, both of Monroe, Brandon Denomme of Savannah, Taylor Klebba of Jersey,  Layna Thompson of Savannah; siblings, Sina O. (Hess) Tangermann,  Edda H. (Hess) Scerba, and  Rudolf Oscar Hess.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Hess will be held Friday, November 21, 2014, 5:00 PM, at the Jersey Community Center, 125 Main Street, in Jersey, GA.

Adam Wilcox Obit

Adam Wilcox of Covington, passed away November 18, 2014, at the age of 36. Adam was an avid fan of Georgia Tech, the Atlanta Braves and the Falcons. He loved his Dodge truck and enjoyed taking road trips, studying history and going to theatrical plays. Adam had a jovial spirit, was always joking with his friends and loved to laugh. He cherished his family dearly, and especially loved spending time with them at the holidays. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Fred and Emma Moran; and his paternal grandparents, Stewart and Juanita Wilcox.

 

He is survived by his beloved daughters, Erin Nicole Wilcox, Cyler Avery Wilcox; mother, Barbara Wilcox, all of Covington; father and step-mother, James and Dianne Wilcox of Pekin, IL; sister, Marisa Taylor of Covington; brother and sister-in-law, Jason and Allison Wilcox of Marietta; niece and nephews, Jordan Wilcox of Marietta, Isaac Smith of Frederic, MI, Gavin Taylor of Covington; as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

 

Funeral Services for Adam will be held Sunday, November 23, 2014, 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with entombment following in Memory Chapel Mausoleum at Lawnwood Memorial Park. Travis Bennett, age 46, of Covington, died November 16, 2014. He enjoyed spending time outdoors fishing and hunting. Additionally, he loved Chevrolet cars, was an avid NASCAR fan and his favorite driver was Jeff Gordon. Travis was a devoted father, and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Matthew Trevor Bennett; maternal grandparents, Chess and Willie Mae "Bill" Akins; and his paternal grandparents, SD and Ethel Bennett.

Obit - Lois Marion France

Lois Marion France of Covington, passed away November 14, 2014, at the age of 69. Mrs. France worked for the United States Federal Government, in the General Services Administration. Following her retirement, she worked as a computer technician for Middle Ridge Elementary School. She was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church, and also served as pianist there, and at other churches where her son served in ministerial positions. She raised her children in a Christian home, and instilled in them the values of love and selflessness. Mrs. France was a devout Christian, a dedicated prayer warrior and an amazing friend to all she knew. She had an infectious laugh, and even during her fight against cancer, she was a living testimony of God's love. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford C. France; great-granddaughter, Kaia Jordan; and her parents, James and Blanche (Brown) Criswell.

James "Jimmy" Ogden

Jimmy Ogden of Covington, passed away November 14, 2014, at the age of 58. He enjoyed hunting, spending time at his farm, taking his family out on the boat and watching NASCAR. Jimmy loved his family dearly, and cherished the time he spent with his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 31 years, Cathy (Mink) Ogden; parents, Wilbur and Jacqueline (McLeod) Ogden; and his brother, Christopher Ogden.

Tyler Seagraves of Covington, passed away November 12, 2014, at the age of 88.  Mr. Seagraves served his country in the United States Navy. He loved his family and enjoyed being outside, going hunting, fishing and working in his garden.  When not traveling for work, he loved spending time with his family. Mr. Seagraves was preceded in death by his grandson, Cory Seagraves; parents, Hoyt and Annie Mae Seagraves; and his brother, L.B. Seagraves.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Louise Seagraves of Covington; son, Doug Seagraves of Loganville; granddaughter, Nicole and Justin Rushin of Evans; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and William Neal of Albany; as well as several nieces and nephews. 

A Graveside Service for Mr. Seagraves will be held Saturday, November 15, 2014, 2:00 PM, at Corinth Memorial Gardens, 1635 GA Highway 81 SW, in Loganville, with Don Hardison and Lester Waters officiating. Gerry Paul Pinson Obit

Gerry Paul Pinson, also known as "Hump", of Conyers, passed away November 11, 2014, at the age of 57. He enjoyed watching western movies, spending time with his friends, working on cars and listening to music – especially Bobby Bare songs. Gerry loved his family dearly, and cherished the time he spent with the children in his family. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Grady Pinson; brother, Jimmy Clancy; and his brother-in-law, Steven Johnson;

Obit - Christine Wood

Christine Wood, age 80, of Covington, passed away November 8, 2014. "Nanny", as she was affectionately known by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was the matriarch of her family. She was one of Jehovah's witnesses, and would often fellowship with both the Covington and Oxford congregations. Mrs. Wood worked for the Newton County school system, in the cafeteria, for 40 years. She was a self-taught seamstress, enjoyed gardening and was an excellent cook. Preceding her in death were her husband, Alex Wood; four great-grandchildren; sister, Mavine Goss; and her brother, William Graham. 

 

Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Marcia Kidd, Kim Wood, Penny and Lee Foster; 9 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Joyce Garwood, Joan Schenk; brothers, Edward Graham, Wendell Graham, Ronald Graham; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Wood will be held Saturday, November 22, 2014, 1:00 PM, at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, in Covington, with Brother Leotha Roby officiating. A private interment will be held in Lawnwood Memorial Park.

Obit - Bobby E. Herring

Bobby E. Herring of Covington, passed away November 8, 2014, at the age of 78. Mr. Herring served his country in the Army National Guard. He was an active member of Eastridge Community Church, was vital in seeing the church become a reality and very supportive of all the ministries of the church. Additionally, he attended Stewart Community Church. Regardless of the church he attended, Mr. Herring served others his entire life, and was always willing to help anyone in need. As an entrepreneur, he owned several businesses, and started Darnel Quick Recovery, in 1979, and retired in 2004. He enjoyed music and playing both the guitar and piano. Mr. Herring was a caring and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He cherished his family, and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Irene (Sanders) Herring; son, Danny Herring; and his granddaughter, Danielle Herring.

 

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Kitty Herring; daughter and son-in-law, Nan and Curtis Lynch of Covington; son and daughters-in-law, Greg and Lisa Herring of Covington, Kimberly Herring of Newborn; grandchildren, Alison Mask, Nicole Lynch, Katie Lynch, Brittney Jones, Devin Herring, Shane Carroll, Rory Bowen, Paul Campbell, Kasey Brooks; six great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Sara and John Peters of Covington; brother, Jerry Herring of Louisiana; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Melissa "Sam" Sweet-Free

Melissa "Sam" Sweet-Free joined her Heavenly Father on Thursday, November 6, 2014, after a year-long battle with peritoneal mesothelioma.  She was born in Atlanta on June 16, 1966.  Sam was a devoted wife, mother, daughter and friend.  For the last eight years she was employed by Summit Holdings in Gainesville, where she enjoyed her work and office family.  She was in her element when she was helping others through difficult times with words of encouragement, sympathy and prayers.  Her favorite pastime was enjoying the beach or skiing at the lake with her family. 

 

She is survived by father and step-mother, Lynn and Sharon Payne; mother, Marion Dismuke; her loving husband, Mark Free; daughter, Samantha Sweet; son Maxwell Sweet;  sister and brother-in-law; Melanie and Kevin Church.  She is also survived by her grandmother, Frances "Polly" Dismuke, niece, Kristy Church Jones and her family.  In addition she is survived by two loving step-daughters, Danelle and Denyes Free; as well as a large extended family of many special aunts, uncles and cousins.

 

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, November 15, 2014, 3:30 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington with Pastor Ken Grindle and Pastor Brandon Stanley officiating.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service, from 2:00 – 3:15 PM.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Mesothelioma Research Foundation, 1317 King St., Alexandria, VA 22314, or Net India Ministries, PO Box 1481, Gainesville, GA  30503.

Michael Brett Fisher

Michael Brett Fisher of Covington passed away November 7, 2014, at the age of 32.  Brett grew up in the First Baptist Church of Covington where he was very active in the primary and youth programs.  He was an avid FSU fan and loved traveling with his Uncle Bill.  He will be remembered as a loyal friend and will be greatly missed. 

 

Survivors include his mother and step-father, Iris and James Tyo of Covington; father and step-mother, Frank and Sharon Fisher of Monticello; sister, Erin Fisher of Decatur; brother, Scott Fisher of Covington; maternal grandmother, Shirley Dial of Covington; nieces and nephew, Anessa Turner, Tripp Fisher, Bayley Fisher; numerous cousins, aunts and uncles; special uncle and his wife, Bill and Kelley Dial; and his beloved black lab, Mars.

 

A Memorial Service for Brett will be held Tuesday, November 11, 2014, 2:00 PM, in the Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church, 1139 Usher Street, in Covington with Pastor Josh Cornett officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Brett's memory to Newton County Humane Society, 210 Lower River Road, Covington, GA  30016.

Obit - Thomas Gordon King, III

Thomas Gordon King, III, of Covington, passed away November 6, 2014, at the age of 76. Mr. King was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. In recent years, he attended Bethel Christian Church, in Conyers. He loved country music, dancing, baseball and riding horses. He liked visiting new restaurants and especially enjoyed catfish. Mr. King cherished his family, and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Mary King.

 

Survivors include his daughter, Kim Boss and her husband, Eddie of Conyers; sons, Thomas Gordon King, IV, and his fiancé, Margaret Smith of Lula, Jeff King and his wife, Abra of Covington; grandchildren, Edward Boss, Michelle Cook, Kristina Sliger, Cassie King, Amber King; great-grandchildren, Aurora, AJ, Rosa, JJ; sisters and brother-in-law, Francis and Larry Garner, Ruth Phillips; niece and nephews, Lynn and Jeff Purkiss, Phillip and Tania Garner, Rip Rogers; as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. King will be held Sunday, November 9, 2014, 2:00 PM, at Bethel Christian Church, 1930 Bethel Road NE, in Conyers, with Pastor Ken Stokes officiating. The family will receive friends at the church Sunday, one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 – 2:00 PM.

Obit - Mildred Kines-Shelton

Mildred Kines-Shelton, age 93, of Covington, passed away November 6, 2014. Mrs. Shelton was a kind-hearted woman who made everyone feel as if they were family. She enjoyed traveling to the mountains, drawing, crafting handmade quilts and cooking during the holidays. Her family especially enjoyed her wonderful biscuits. Mrs. Shelton cherished her family dearly and loved spending time with them. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Willie Lee Kines; former husband, Clarence Shelton; parents, George and Nora (Hester) Ivey; granddaughter, Lori Kines Ellis; and her grandson, John Leonard Gardiner, Jr.

 

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Ronald Kines of Covington, Janice and Doug Shelnutt of Loganville, Billinette and Frank Hite of Lawrenceville, Gary and Jackie Kines of Covington, Michael T. Kines of Madison; grandchildren, Sabrina Huber, Scott Strange, Gerald Strange, Robin Tilley, June Dunbar, Keith Shelnutt, Natalie Bryson, Stephanie Gardiner, Tony Kines, Tammi Booska, Ivey Kirk; as well as many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Shelton will be held Saturday, November 8, 2014, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Don Hardison officiating and interment following in Corinth Christian Cemetery, in Loganville. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, two hours prior to the service, from 12:00 – 2:00 PM.

 

Hilda Brewer

Hilda Brewer, age 72, of Conyers, passed away November 6, 2014.  Mrs. Brewer loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them.  In addition she loved going to the beach and the mountains in the fall of the year, going to the horse races, eating out, cross stitching and just getting out to ride. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mary Frances Griffeth; sisters, Shelby Mallory Sims, Mary Nell Harvey; and her late husband, Bill Compton.

 

Survivors include her loving husband, Crew Brewer of Conyers; son, Clay Nix of Ila; sisters and brothers, Andy and Harriet Griffeth of Covington, Sue and Walter Chancey of Center, Pam and Dave Bradshaw of Bogart, Kathy and Duane Hakes of Lavonia, Mark and Connie Griffeth of Jefferson, Raye Fuller of Winterville; step-children, Donnie and Jane Compton, Tony and Linda Compton, Ronald and JoAnn Compton, all of Covington, Doug and Pam Brewer of Winder; as well as several grandchildren and caregiver, Cathy Anglin.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Brewer will be held Sunday, November 9, 2014, 2:00 PM at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Tony Compton officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, November 8, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made, in memory of Mrs. Brewer, to the Alzheimer's Association - Georgia Chapter, 41 Perimeter Center East, Suite 550, Atlanta, GA  30346; or Susan G. Komen for the Cure, 4840 Roswell Rd., Atlanta, GA 30342.

Obit - William "Bill" Mayhue

Bill Mayhue of Covington, passed away November 5, 2014, at the age of 76. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, and enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing and cooking for his friends. He never met a stranger and was always willing to help anyone in need. He was loved by many, and will be greatly missed by his family and friends that he cherished so dearly. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, John and Anne Lee Mayhue; sister, Dorothy Proctor; and his brother, Bunnia Mayhue.

 

Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Evelyn Mayhue of Lithonia; sister and brother-in-law, Edith and Earl Hawkins of Maryville, TN; best friend, Bill Mastin of Covington; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Memorial Service for Bill will be held at a later date.

Obit - Dollie Faye Payne

Dollie Faye Payne of Covington, passed away November 2, 2014, at the age of 62. Dollie was kind-hearted and always saw the good in every person she met. She loved all kinds of animals – especially cats and dogs. Dollie cherished spending time with her family, and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by two very special friends, Debbie Ford and Darlene Brown; parents, Arlow and Pauline Payne; as well as several sisters and brothers.

 

Survivors include her sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen Westmoreland of Commerce, Linda and Paul Moyers of Covington, Patricia A. Moody of Commerce, Angela Ricks of Atlanta, Myrtle and Tony Owens of Covington; brothers and sister-in-law, Alvin and Barbara Payne of Winder, Leon Payne of Covington; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as her special dog, Pickle Payne Floyd.

 

Funeral Services for Dollie will be held Wednesday, November 5, 2014, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, with Pastor Lamar Scarborough officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday, November 4, from 6:00 – 9:00 PM.
