obit for LeAnn Houts

 

LeAnn Houts, of Conyers, passed away Monday, June 29, 2020, at 58 years of age.  After retiring from the Coca Cola Company in 2018, spending time with her granddaughter became LeAnn's favorite pastime. She was a wonderful mother who cherished her family, and an awesome friend.  LeAnn enjoyed traveling to Biloxi, where she loved watching the calming waves and tranquility of the ocean.  She was preceded in death by her father, David Houts; and nephew, Brandon Hayes.

 

Those left to miss her presence in their lives include, her daughters, Ashlea Houts of Covington, Chelsea Houts of Tampa, FL; granddaughter, Emma Shastitko; mother, Dorothy Houts; sisters, Michelle Houts, Dawn Houts; brother, Calvin Houts; nephew, Alexander Rodriguez; as well as best friend, Cathy Holbrook.

 

A celebration of life for LeAnn will be held at a later time.

obit for Howard Dan Haralson

Howard Dan Haralson, of Covington, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2020, at the age of 72.  He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Covington and a proud veteran of the United States Army. Dan's life was centered around family, and in his attention to details, he consistently demonstrated their importance to him; he remembered important dates, sent postcards from his traveling adventures, and made sure a Honey Baked ham or turkey was a part of holiday gatherings. Though Dan was soft-spoken and reserved in nature, his quick-witted humor shined brightly in the presence of family, and he will be remembered as an attentive and thoughtful son, brother, and uncle. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Howard Spearman and Grace (Conner) Haralson.  

 

Those who will remember Dan with deep affection and fond memories are his brothers and sister-in-law, Bruce Haralson, Kent and Allison Haralson; nieces and their husbands, Kimberly and Timothy Walden, Kelli and Russell Rebholz; as well as great-nieces and great-nephews, Blair, Judson, Kayden, Jaxon, Gracelyn.

 

A Graveside Service for Dan will be held Thursday, July 2, 2020, 11:00 A.M., at Lawnwood Memorial Park, 1111 Access Road, in Covington, with Dr. Cody McNutt officiating. Martha Ella Marshall Swords

Martha Ella Marshall Swords of Covington, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2020, at the age of 94. Mrs. Swords was the most dedicated wife and mother, always put her family first, above everything. She and her husband, Jack, were members of the First Baptist Church of Covington where they loyally enjoyed attending together. Mrs. Swords was a wonderful cook and really enjoyed it until Jack passed away (then she said she just couldn't cook a good meal knowing he wouldn't be there to enjoy it). She had a passion for traveling, staying on the "go" and working hard for many years at DeKalb County where she was well-respected and honored to tell people she retired as a Calendar Clerk for the Superior Court Judges. Mrs. Swords was the last surviving child of Jesse and Isabelle Marshall of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, a family of 13 children, where she was lovingly known as "Ella". She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack B. Swords, Jr.; and grandson, Jason Wade.

 

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Tommy Smith; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Lois Swords; grandchildren, Niki and Shane Waddleton; Jesse and Katlin Swords, Carter and Ben, Billy Swords; great-grandchildren, Maddie Waddleton, Jackson Waddleton, Riley Boyle, Henry Boyle, Marshall Swords; as well as her loyal and beloved caregivers, who she thought of more as her "sweet friends", Jackie Digby, Stephanie Gess, Diane Brand Hill, Diane Niemczyk, Donna Carithers;  

 

A Graveside Service for Mrs. Swords will be held Thursday, July 2, 2020, 11:00 A.M., at Covington City Cemetery, in Covington, with Dr. Jeff Perkins officiating. Reba Milligan

Reba Milligan, of Porterdale, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2020, at the age of 73. Ms. Milligan was a lifelong resident of Porterdale and Newton County. A supportive and dedicated member of Gospel Missions Church, for over 55 years, she enjoyed helping keep the church clean for the members. Ms. Milligan was a devoted employee for Piedmont Molding in Conyers until the company moved operations. She was compassionate and loving and adored being her brother Gary's caregiver. Ms. Milligan was preceded in death by her parents, William Lee and Hazel Woodruff Milligan.

 

Those left to cherish her memory are her siblings and their spouses, Robert and Joyce Milligan, Willie and Cindy Milligan, Lee and Vickie Milligan,  Linda and John Durden, Judy and Pastor Wayne Whitley, Gary Milligan, Pattie and Junior Whitley; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as her supportive friend, Thomas Brown.

obit for Mildred Barnes Lord

Mildred Barnes Lord, of Covington, passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2020, at the age of 91. A lifelong resident of Newton County, Mrs. Lord's work life highlighted her strengths of both loyalty and commitment. From 1946, until he saw his final patient, she was the sole employee for Dr. James Mitchell. After his retirement, she went to work in the Newton County Clerk's Office until 1982. Mrs. Lord brought her remarkable work career to a close when she retired from Newton County Hospital in 1993. An important facet of her Christian faith was her lifelong stewardship at Julia A. Porter United Methodist Church. Mrs. Lord was a member of Porterdale Woman's Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. She had a bubbly personality, a magnetic smile, and a laugh that could fill even the emptiest of spaces; to be in her presence meant there was never a dull moment. Mrs. Lord was preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. Lord; grandson, David Roberds; and parents, Levi and Ruby (Thompson) Barnes.  

 

Left to cherish Mrs. Lord's memory are many, especially her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Kathy Lord of Covington; grandchildren, Blake and Mollie Lord of Canton, Megan and Jon Freeman of Monroe, Candice Christy and fiancé, Brad Davis, of Stone Mountain; great-grandchildren, Emery Lord, Blakely Lord, Finley Lord, Adalyn Freeman, Reagan Freeman; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Fay Potts, of Covington, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2020, at the age of 79. Ms. Potts was a lifelong resident of Newton County. She carved out a life of simplicity and contentment in her hometown community, where she was a loyal employee of Oxford Industries for 25 years and a supportive member of Stewart Baptist Church. In her desire to connect with like-minded people, she joined the Order of the Eastern Star. Through this organization, she developed meaningful, lasting friendships while serving others and giving back. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert M. and Mary (Burnham) Potts; sister, Marian Potts; and brothers, Bob Potts, Reggie Potts.

 

Ms. Potts will be lovingly remembered by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Iris and Floyd Moore; Marcia Slocumb, Alice and Charles Harper, all of Monticello; brother and sister-in-law, Johnny and Melba Potts of Covington; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Ms. Potts will be held Tuesday, June 23, 2020, 11:00 A.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Ed Westbrook officiating. Interment will be held in Hopewell Presbyterian Cemetery, 150 Hopewell Church Road, Covington. Joann Houseman Shropshire, age 63, of Covington, passed away peacefully in her sleep, Friday, June 19, 2020. A native of Panama City, FL, Joann was born November 12, 1956, and was the daughter of the late George and Audrey Houseman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Christopher Houseman, Larry Joe Houseman, George (Chummy) Houseman.

 

Joann loved gardening, cooking, sewing, reading, and spending time with her grandbabies. She was always willing to lend help to anyone in need – opening her home to many transients over the years. Those who came hungry never left without having a homecooked meal, and Joann always sent along a plate of food for later.

 

Joann is survived by her husband of 41 years, Lanier Shropshire; sons, Carey Shropshire (Holly) of Madison, GA, Dustin Shropshire (Kembri) of Dublin, GA; grandchildren, Perry Chance, Wyatt Timms, Draven Shropshire; sister, Joyce Barber of Panama City, FL; brothers, Wayne Houseman (Georgia) of Covington, GA, Ricky Houseman, Earl Houseman, both of Panama City, FL, David Houseman of Covington, GA; sister-in-law, Tonya J. Dominy (Lynne) of Milledgeville, GA; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Mark Stephen Buckley, age 61, of Covington, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2020. Mark was a 1977 graduate of Picayune Memorial High School in Mississippi. In pursuit of his passion for technology, he earned his Bachelor of Arts in information technology from the University of Phoenix in 2007. Mark's career path led him to Social Circle, GA, where he held a position as a Senior Electronics Technician with CertainTeed Corporation for a total of 24 years. He also worked for Kapsch Traffic.com USA as a Systems Engineer Support Coordinator for 8 years. Mark loved the Lord and had strong, unyielding convictions. In his role as a family man, he was the rock that his loved ones could always count on. He had a knack for problem-solving and the ability to find a solution to overcome most any obstacle. Mark was gifted with an open and kind heart, and the weight of his absence will be felt by anyone who had the privilege to know and love him. He was preceded in death by his father, James Harper Buckley; brother, James Michael Buckley; grandparents, RT and Maude (Williams) Buckley, TJ and Mary Lenoir.

 

Left to carry on in Mark's memory is his wife, Sheila Buckley; daughter, Jacqueline Dallas Ross; sons, Mark Stephen Buckley, Jr., Michael Scott Buckley; grandchildren, Bradley Buckley, Bennett Buckley, Brayden Buckley, Brycson Buckley; sisters, Debbie Morrison, Gina Buckley; as well as his extended family in Mississippi.

Willia Dean W. Popham

Willia Dean W. Popham of Covington, passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2020 at the age of 72. Mrs. Popham enjoyed many different hobbies throughout her life such as camping, sewing, and going to flea markets, but most all, she had a remarkable green thumb and loved her flowers. She relished in making everyone happy and always knew how to make you laugh. Mrs. Popham cherished the time spent with her family – especially her grandchildren for whom she adored baking treats. She will be remembered for her greatest passion, which was teaching her family to love one another and will be immensely missed by all. Mrs. Popham was preceded in death by her grandchildren, Christopher Parker, Caden Popham; parents, Joseph Clyde and Jewell Dean Williams.

Curt Jablonski

Curt Jablonski of Covington, passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2020, at the age of 49. Curt was known for being impressively artistic and enjoyed playing the guitar. Finding inspiration from his favorite band, Grateful Dead he even composed some of his own songs. In addition, Curt liked woodworking and cooking and will be immensely missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by both his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Beeco will be held Friday, June 19, 2020, 2 PM, at Central Church, 11157 City Pond Road, in Covington, with Mr. Butch Betts officiating. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Thursday, June 18, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.

 

A Graveside Service will be held Saturday, June 20, 2020, 2 PM, at Watauga Baptist Cemetery, 658 Watauga Church Road, in Franklin, North Carolina.

Winford Eugene Bates

Winford Eugene Bates, 84, of Covington, GA, died June 14, 2020. Gene was born on September 18, 1935, in Covington, to James Lamar and Rosa Claire Bates. He entered the United States Naval Construction Battalion in 1953, as a Seabee, building runways on Midway Island. Gene's service then took him to Sasebo, Japan, where he installed overhead powerlines. When he returned, he enrolled at Georgia State and graduated with a B.A. in 1962. Gene began working for Allstate Insurance as a district sales manager in North Carolina. In 1970, he returned to Covington and started the Gene Bates Insurance Agency in a one-room upstairs office on the Square. The agency is still in business today. Gene had a deep love for his family. He was kind and generous and never met a stranger. Gene was also a devoted caregiver over the years for many family members. He enjoyed spending time on Jackson Lake, the Jacks River in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and fishing along the Apalachee River.

 

Gene will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn (nee Griffith); sons, Daron (C.C.), Kevin (Rebecca), and Landon (Leah); grandchildren, Emilyann and Griffith, Gavin and Gracie, Tyler and Sophia. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Lou Williams; sister-in-law, Katherine Bates; and brothers-in-law, Jim, John (Candy), and Steve Griffith.

 

A Graveside Service for Gene will be held Friday, June 19, 2020, 11:00 A.M. at Oxford Historical Cemetery, in Oxford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Memorial Honor Program, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or to the American Diabetes Association, 225 Peachtree Street NE, Suite #550, Atlanta, GA 30303.

Carolyn Sutchman

Carolyn Stutchman, 86, passed away on Tuesday, June 9, 2020 after an extended illness. She was born March 13, 1934 in Columbus, Georgia to John Clark O'Pry and Ouida Bell Welch O'Pry. Carolyn worked and retired from Georgia Power Company where she worked in many capacities over the years. She was a member of many churches in her lifetime, most recently of Oxford Baptist Church in Oxford, GA. She was a huge University of Alabama football fan and never missed watching a game. Carolyn was a loving and caring, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Brenda Kay Andrews; parents; brother, Julian Richard O'Pry.

 

Survivors include her Husband of 69 years, Rex D. Stutchman, Sr., of Conyers, Georgia; Son, Dale Stutchman, Jr., (Brenda) of Brunswick, Georgia; Grandchildren, Rex Stutchman, III (Lari) of Covington, Georgia, Amanda (Wayne) Daniels of Monticello, Georgia, Danny (Crystal) Bennett of Covington, Georgia; Great-Grandchildren, Kimberly (Jonathan) Ralston, Wyatt Daniels, Danny Bennett Jr, Shelby Bennett, Tyler Stutchman, Alexis Daniels; Great-Great Grandchild, Jaxon Ralston.

 

A Graveside Service for Mrs. Stutchman will be held Saturday, June 13, 2020, 1:00 P.M. at Parkhill Cemetery, 4161 Macon Road, in Columbus. Donald Harvey Ramey

Donald Harvey Ramey, of Covington, passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2020, at the age of 83.

Mr. Ramey courageously served his country in the United States Navy. In his spare time, he enjoyed many hobbies such as fishing, gardening, bird watching (hummingbirds were his favorite), cooking, and playing card games – especially pinochle. Mr. Ramey inspired in his daughters a love of the ocean, the woods, the mountains, and outdoor adventures. He also inspired their love of games and bird watching. More than anything, he loved spending time with his family. Mr. Ramey was described by his family and friends as easy going, never complaining, and a hard worker who provided for his family. His constant companion was his pup, Ginger, and his presence as a caring husband, dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather will be profoundly missed. Mr. Ramey was preceded in death by his father, William Donald Ramey; mother and step-father, Vida Pearl (Patterson) and Woodrow "Papa" Powell; brother, Richard Ramey.

 

Those who will carry on in his memory is his wife of almost 62 years, Anne Ramey; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn Anne Patterson; Pamela Renee Ramey-Tatum (John), Robin Regina Ganyard (Carl), Christina Denise Nelson (Myles), Donna Darlene Mincey (Oscar); grandchildren, Steven, Sharena, Candace, Megan, Carla, Mikey, Lil Myles, Luke, Lindsay, Sadie, Bradley; great-grandchildren, Miranda, Karsten, Holden, Selah, Hannah, Easton, Ramey, Warren, Jaelyn, Kinlee, Jade, Laken, Levi; special cousin, Teeny Wade; as well as brother-in-law, Bill Bishop, Jr.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Ramey will be held Sunday, June 7, 2020, 6:00 P.M., at Chimney Park, 8201 Hazelbrand Road in Covington. Michael D. Griffin, Sr.

Michael D. Griffin, Sr., of Covington, passed away Monday, June 1, 2020, at the age of 78. He was a wonderful, loving, selfless man adored by all who crossed his path. Michael never met a stranger and was known for striking up conversations wherever he went. He always went out of his way to help not only his family but his friends as well. He loved and was loved unconditionally. Michael always told everyone to have a blessed day and was quick to offer a hug or a prayer. Before retiring, he owned Atlanta Sign Company but continued to do sign work from home for so many of his loyal clients. He was preceded in death by his parents, Byron "Bill" and Lillian (Sanders) Griffin.

 

Michael leaves behind his high school sweetheart and wife of 58 years, Catherine G. Griffin; his children, Mike Griffin, Jr. (Heather) of Dacula, Connie Bryan of Milledgeville, Melanie Gates (Brian) of Monroe; grandchildren, Krystal, Tony, Maggie, Cameron, Courtney, Jessica, Jordan; great-grandchildren, Addison, Luna, Tony, Jr., Leia, Sophia; siblings, Glenda Holley (Jerry), Carol McNeil, Byron Griffin all of Columbus.

 

A Graveside Service for Michael will be held Sunday, June 7, 2020, 5:00 P.M., at Lawnwood Memorial Park, 111 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Billy Duncan officiating. Mary Christian, of Eatonton, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2020, at the age of 75. Fondly known as "Granny", Mary was quick to greet everyone she met with a warm smile and genuine hospitality. She had a deep concern for the well-being of others and her capacity to care knew no limits. Among other things, Mary will be remembered most for her love of family and for all mankind. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ollie and Annie Lois (Howard) Yarberry; and brothers, Joe Yarberry, Ronald Christian, Donald Christian.

 

Left to cherish Mary's memory are her daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy Christian and Andy Holbrooks, Ann and Tim Parnell; Dana and Shannon Christian; son, Eddie Christian; grandchildren, Bridget Christian, Tiffany Parnell, Josh Parnell, Cody Christian, Caleb Coker, C.J. Obit - Teri Cannon

Teri Diane Cannon, 58, of Covington, passed away June 1, 2020. Although a native of Savannah, Covington was her "home", for more than 25 years, and where she faithfully attended services at The Church Covington. She relished her trips to the beach where she especially enjoyed the ocean, salty air and cruising on her bicycle! A true "Southern Belle", Teri treasured her family, took pride in her role as a mother and respectfully earned the love and adoration from her children's friends - she cherished them as if they were her own. Preceding her in death were her parents, Florence and Virginia (Dasher) Sikes.

 

Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 39 years, Dale Cannon; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Chris Raines of Marietta; son and daughter-in-law, Jesse and Kelsey Cannon of Newnan; grandson, Logan; brother and sister-in-law, Tony and Mary Sikes of The Villages, FL; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Friday, June 5, 2020, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. A Funeral Service for Teri will be held Monday, June 8, 1:30 PM, at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, in Savannah, with visitation one hour prior to her service. Interment will be held at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, 315 Greenwich Road, in Savannah, following her service.

obit for Dewey (Dubbie) Lawson Henry

Dewey (Dubbie) Lawson Henry, of Covington, passed away Monday, June 1, 2020, at the age of 84. From May 1957 until May 1963, Mr. Henry proudly served his country as a tank commander in the Army National Guard. As a devoted and faithful man of God, he was an active member at Canaan Baptist Church where he was both a bus driver and a deacon. During his membership at Trinity Baptist, he served as a deacon and lent his talents as choir leader. In more recent years, he was a supportive congregant at Newton Baptist Church in Covington. Mr. Henry was a machinist at C.R. Bard, and as a testimony to his tireless work ethic, did not retire until the age of 73. In his free time, he used his skills as a machinist to build and create various items. He was a friendly soul who enjoyed meeting people from all walks of life. Mr. Henry, a family man through and through, delighted in making memories with his many loved ones, especially his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Henry; parents, Charlie Ruben and Margie (Canup) Henry; sister, Margaret Bagley; and brothers, Johnny, Boyce, Edward, William, Obie, Eugene, Bernard, and Leon Henry.

 

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Jerry Melville; son and daughter-in-law, Wade and Stephanie Henry; sisters and brother-in-law, Annie Sue Rowe, Linda and Ralph Roman; grandchildren, Jessica and Kevin Parker, Joshua and Layne Atkinson, Natalie Henry.

 

A Private Funeral Service for Mr. Henry will be held Friday, June 5, 2020, 11:00 A.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Chris Allen and Pastor Tony Howeth officiating. Melvin Willard Coles

Melvin Willard Coles of Oxford, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2020, at the age of 59. Mr. Coles was a faithful member of Macedonia Baptist Church. His selfless and giving nature was shown immensely through the love he had for his family. Mr. Coles was known for being a simple man, not requiring much at all, and his good sense of humor. He was an Eagle Scout and enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting, westerns, working in his garden and cooking.  

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 37 years, Sheilah Coles; sons and daughter-in-law, Jeremy Coles, Jared and Ashley Coles; grandchildren, Camden Coles, Mason Coles, Case Coles, Cash Coles; parents, Zachary and Joyce Coles; sisters and brother-in-law, Valerie Coles, Patricia and Phillip Dixon; brother and sister-in-law, John and Shelly Coles; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mr. Coles will be held Wednesday, June 3, 2020, 2:00 P.M., at Macedonia Baptist Church, 108 Macedonia Church Rd., in Oxford, with Rev. David Nelson and Steve Ray officiating. A visitation will be held two hours prior to his service, at the church, from 12 Noon – 2:00 P.M.
