Hazel Doris Stowe

Hazel Doris Stowe, of Covington, passed away Thursday, February 10, 2022, at the age of 100. Born March 19, 1921, to the late Jesse Lewis and Clara Nelms Dobbs, she was born and raised in the Almon Community. She had deep family roots at Shiloh United Methodist Church where her grandfather, John Robert Dobbs, was listed as one the trustees on the 1908 Deed. Being a member of the church since she was 6 years old, Mrs. Stowe had her own "spot" to sit at on Sunday mornings. After graduating from Palmer Stone School, she attended Monroe A&M School in Walton County where young adults were paid to learn a trade through a government program called NYA, which was established as part of Roosevelt's "New Deal" after the Great Depression. Since Mrs. Stowe's mother had taught her how to sew, that's the course she chose and was often asked to help teach the sewing class. In 1941, she married her husband, Nathan (Sam) Stowe whom she met while working in a clothing store on the square of Covington called The Leader. After 30 plus years as a dedicated employee at Oxford Manufacturing Company (The Shirt Plant) she retired from the highest paying position, setting pocket. The more pockets that you sewed in a day, the more you were paid. Between that and hemming pants and other alterations at night and on the weekends is how she raised her 4 children and paid off her mortgage on her home three years early. Sewing was Mrs. Stowe's life, but gardening was where her heart was. Being outside digging in the dirt, watching her vegetables grow made her heart sing. Aside from gardening she loved to cook, and her family called her "the chicken and dumpling queen". She was a great cook and did most of her cooking by memory, and by how it looked and felt. Mrs. Stowe had a great sense of humor and loved an off-colored joke. She will be missed dearly by everyone that knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Nathan Harold (Sam) Stowe; son, Harold Lewis Stowe; parents, Jesse Lewis and Clara Belle Dobbs; sisters, Nannie Mae Capes, Kathleen Martin; and brother, James Henry Dobbs.

Survivors include her daughters, Ilene Slaughter (Doug), Claudine Destino (Jim); son, Wayne Stowe (Deana); grandchildren, Matt Stowe, Marc Stowe, Marti Slaughter, Lori Stewart, Alex Destino, Chris Destino, Lindsey O'Connor, Jennifer Trent, LeeAnn Avery; 25 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Stowe will be held Monday, February 14, 2022, 2:00 P.M., at Shiloh United Methodist Church, 10 Almon Church Road, in Covington, with Rev. Mike Wadley officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park.
