Inez Phillips Bowen, 88, of Covington, died October 9, 2012. The daughter of the late Oscar and Omie McCart Phillips of Porterdale, Georgia, Mrs. Bowen was a direct descendant of Noah Phillips who established the first textile mill in Newton County at Cedar Shoals (now Porterdale). She was an avid golfer, owned and operated a hair salon in Covington for many years, and was a member of the North Covington United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joel T. Bowen, Sr., and an infant son, Billy Thomas Bowen.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mildred and Wilson Martin of Inverness, FL; son and daughter-in-law, J. Thomas and Nancy Bowen of Cornelia, GA; grandsons, Chadwick Martin of Lebanon, TN, Judson Martin (Misti) of Ballground, GA, Thomas Shay Hopkins (Jeanette) of Atlanta, Jesse Bowen (Ginny) of Baltimore, MD, Toby Bowen (Mary Glenn) of Suwanee, GA; four great-grandsons.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Bowen will be held Friday, October 12, 2012, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Michael Bell officiating, and interment following in Oxford Historical Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, from 12:30 – 2:00 PM. Flowers are accepted, or donations may be made to the Porterdale Woman's Club, Annette McGee, 7176 Brown Bridge Road, Covington, GA 30014; or North Covington United Methodist Church, 5138 Emory Street NW, Covington, GA 30014.
