Obit - Carrie Inez Wilson

Carrie Inez Wilson, of Covington, passed away September 27, 2013, at the age of 91.  She devoted her life to her family and her God.  Mrs. Wilson was a member of Newton Baptist Church and the Ambassadors Sunday School Class.  She enjoyed cross stitch, embroidery, quilting, tending to her flowers and writing.  A fabulous cook, she was famous for her fried peach pies.  Collecting porcelain dolls was a hobby that brought her much joy.  She had many friends and loved making people laugh.  She retired from Edwards Middle School, but had previously worked in textiles.  Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Britt Wilson; and daughter, Wanda Jane Nichols.

 

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Maggie and Herman Bradford of Covington, Annie Laura Wilson of Oxford, Patsy Lodge, Mary Alice and Duane Criswell, Kathy Standridge, all of Covington; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Douglas and Birgit Wilson, Thomas Eugene and Rachel Wilson, all of Conyers, Timothy Britt Wilson of Covington; 18 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Lula Spivey of Loganville, Sara Ann and Billy Leach of Good Hope; brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Margaret Goss of Lawrenceville, Jo Ann Goss, Ella Ruth Goss, both of Covington; several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Wilson will be held Monday, September 30, 2013, 11:00 AM, at Newton Baptist Church, 720 Jack Neely Road, in Covington, with Pastor Tony Howeth and Pastor Casey Bradford officiating, and interment following in Green Meadow Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Sunday, September 29, from 2:00 – 5:00 PM.  Flowers accepted, or donations may be made to Newton Baptist Church Building Fund, 720 Jack Neely Road, Covington, Georgia, 30016.

Obit - W.K. Lunsford, Jr.

W.K. Lunsford, Jr., of Covington, passed away September 22, 2013, at the age of 90. Mr. Lunsford was a decorated veteran of the United States Army Air Force, served his country during World War II, and completed more than 35 combat missions over Europe. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, in Covington, but had attended Covington First United Methodist Church, for many years with his wife, Mary. Mr. Lunsford was a member of the Christian Fellowship Class, the Senior Saints choir, BPOE Lodge #1806, Atlanta Sales Executive Club, and the Toastmasters Club. He loved his family dearly, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mr. Lunsford truly enjoyed playing bridge with his friends and working in his vegetable garden. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Kiser and Valera Odessa (Adams) Lunsford; his first wife of 52 ½ years, Helen A. Lunsford; son, W.K. (Bill) Lunsford, III; and his siblings, Mary Virginia Wiley and Oscar M. Lunsford.

Survivors include his wife, Mary P. Lunsford; sons and daughters-in-law, L.R. (Bob) Lunsford of Covington, Jack and Kathy Lunsford of Jacksonville, FL, Melinda Lunsford of Bellingham, WA; 3 grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Lunsford will be held Sunday, September 29, 2013, 2:00 PM, at the First United Methodist Church, in Covington, with Rev. Dr. Douglas Gilreath and Rev. Jan McCoy officiating, and interment following in Covington City Cemetery. Obit - Mary Claire Whitmer

Mary Claire Whitmer, a resident of Redan for 45 years, passed away September 21, 2013 at the age of 79.  She loved her family dearly and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Whitmer was preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 years, Donald Lee Whitmer.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Tony Burnett of McDonough; sons and daughters-in-law, Danny Lee and Debbie Whitmer of Redan, Kenneth Whitmer of McDonough, Bobby and Kathy Whitmer of Lilburn, David Whitmer, Darren and Lynn Whitmer, all of McDonough, Danny Ray and Sarah Beth Whitmer of Covington; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Whitmer will be held Tuesday, September 24, 2013, 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Dr. David Moody officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Edwin "Red" Davis of Covington, passed away September 21, 2013, at the age of 63.   Mr. Davis loved his family dearly.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, being outside and riding in his truck.  He also loved going to Arrowhatchee Plantation and feeding the donkey, Jack.  Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his wife, Teresa (Layson) Davis; parents, Robert Lloyd and Betty Elizabeth (Poteet) Davis; sister, Linda Jones; and brother, Richard Davis, Sr.

Charles Williams of Oakwood, Georgia, formerly of Covington, passed away September 21, 2013, at the age of 68.  Mr. Williams worked for Lithonia Lighting for 20 years.  He loved his family dearly and enjoyed working in his yard and collecting coins.  He was also an avid Georgia Bulldog fan.  Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Marie (Milligan) Williams; parents, B. Obit - Michael David Roberds


Michael David Roberds, of Covington, passed away September 19, 2013, at the age of 18.  Michael David was a loving son.  He was a graduate of Alpha Omega High School in Covington, and he attended Eastridge Community Church and The Orchard Church in Loganville. Michael David enjoyed all types of fishing, jet skiing and loved all sports.

 

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Kathryn "Katbird" and Mark Lord of Covington, GA; father, Michael Roberds of Loganville, GA; sisters, Candice Christy of Kennesaw, GA, Brittany Roberds of Richmond, VA; brother, Michael C. Obit - Kathleen Carter Johnson

The family of Etha Kathleen (Wilson) Carter Johnson announces the permanent relocation of the "Happy House"! Born December 4, 1915, in Walton County, GA, Kathleen celebrated her heavenly flight at the age of 97 on September 15, 2013.  A lady of great faith, she was an active member of Porterdale Baptist Church in her early years and has been a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Covington since 1963.  She was employed as a winder tender for Bibb Manufacturing Co., for 36 years and was a member of the Porterdale Woman's Club for more than 30 years where she developed and nurtured many lasting friendships. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.  Kathleen's special gift of hospitality made those who visited her home feel welcomed, and they fondly referred to her home as the "Happy House". She enjoyed traveling, cooking, and engaging in the lives of her family and friends. Kathleen was preceded in death by her husband, John Carter; second husband, Alton Johnson; son, Ronald Carter; and her granddaughter, Stephanie Carter.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Harriet Carter, Don Carter, Pete and Gail Carter; daughter-in-law, Libby Carter; step-daughter, Louise McGiboney; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Obit - Barbara Shepherd Johnson

Barbara Rachel Shepherd Johnson of Covington, passed away September 15, 2013, at the age of 77. Mrs. Johnson was a member of First Presbyterian Church, in Covington, for more than 50 years. Her dedication to her church included serving as an Elder, participating with the Circle Lady Bible Study, and working with the finance committee. She enjoyed cooking and loved traveling. She and her husband, Jesse, had traveled to all 50 states except Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her parents, Obie and Birdie Mae (Lane) Shepherd.

Sterling Burney, of Covington, GA, passed away September 12, 2013, at the age of 77.  Mr. Burney was a member of Almon Baptist Church.  He proudly served his country in the United States Navy.  Mr. Burney was a loving father and friend and enjoyed gardening and traveling.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Essie Ruth Fuller Burney; parents, Roy and Frances Burney; brothers, Larry and Jerry Burney.

Jimmy Ray Payne of Covington, passed away September 10, 2013, at the age of 79. Mr. Payne was born, in Porterdale, to the late Ardell and Eva (Jones) Payne. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gussie Lou (Ivy) Payne; and his brother, Ardell Payne, Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Berthalene (Vaughn) Payne; children and their spouses, Rhonda Lynn Wilkerson, Susan and Dennis Cheek, Jimmy Gus and Angelena Payne, Marty Ray Payne, Joy and Jim Brady, David and Denise Allen; 12 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Bobby Lamar and Barbara Payne; several nieces and nephews; and many close friends he considered family.

Obit - Gertrude Ricci

Gertrude (Pat) Ricci, 93, of Conyers, Georgia, passed away September 9, 2013. Mrs. Ricci was an animal lover, had a witty and humorous personality, and others always enjoyed being around her. While living in New York, she was a Buffalo Bill's fan, but after moving to Georgia she cheered for the Atlanta Falcons! Mrs. Ricci was preceded in death by her husband, Peter A. Ricci; and her half-brother, Herman Kohlar.

Survivors include her grandchildren, Maria and Rocky Dunlap, Susan and David Swafford, Alanna Kords; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A Family Graveside Service for Mrs. Ricci will be held Friday, September 13, 2013, 10:30 AM, at Honey Creek Woodlands, in Conyers, Georgia. Obit - David Lee King, Sr.

David Lee King, Sr., 60, of Covington, passed away September 9, 2013. David was a mighty man of God, and served Him as an evangelist, lead guitar player, and singer.  He was never one to say anything negative about anyone, and was always there when his friends and family needed him. David loved his family dearly, and enjoyed making memories with them all. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carrol King; daughter, Missy King Buice; son, Jason King, Sr.; and his sister, Elaine Kirk.

Survivors include his partner, Doris Bowman; daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Michael Hewell of Oxford; son and daughter-in-law, David Lee, Jr., and Tonya King of Stockbridge; grandchildren, Tyler King, Avery King, Emily Hewell, Dalton Hewell, Logan Hewell, Nathan Hewell, Megan King, Jason King, Jr., Cassie Longhart, Sabrina Owensby; several great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and James Ramey of Covington; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Obit - Jacquelyn (Jackie) Jones Wood

Jacquelyn (Jackie) Jones Wood of Covington, passed away September 7, 2013 at her daughter's home in Cumming.  She was 70 years of age at the time of her death.  Mrs. Wood was a loving wife and mother who loved and enjoyed her grandchildren.  It could be said she was a full-time grandmother.  She was a member of Covington First United Methodist Church.  She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed playing bridge with her friends.  Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by her parents, Chester Harwell and Hazel (McClure) Jones; and her brother, James Harwell Jones.

 

Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Don Wood, of Covington; children, Kristie Dame and her husband Chris of Cumming and their children Jacquelyn, Benton, and Julianne, Jim Wood and his wife Claire of Huntsville, AL and their children Joy and Callie, Don Wood III and his wife Debbie of Alpharetta and their children Anna, Emma, and Marion; niece Angela Gilmer.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Wood will be held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, September 10, at Covington First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Douglas Gilreath, Rev. Jan McCoy, and Larry Parnell officiating.  Interment will follow in Starrsville Methodist Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Monday, September 9, from 6:00 – 9:00 P.M.  In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to Mansfield United Methodist Church, 3031 N. Obit - Rev. James L. "Jimmy" Edwards

Rev. James "Jimmy" Edwards, of Covington, passed away September 6, 2013, at the age of 81.  Jimmy was a loving husband, father and grandfather.  He exhibited a quality of unconditional love that is admirable while caring for his beloved wife, Betty.  He loved all of the churches he pastored and attended.  He pastored Canaan Baptist, Mt. Zion two different times for a total of 12 years, Annie Mary Baptist, Ebenezer Baptist, Stewart Baptist, and at the time of his death, he attended Stewart Community Church.  Jimmy was an insurance agent for Life of Virginia and Metropolitan Insurance Company for 30 years.  He served 2 years of active duty with the United States Army and 22 years for the Army National Guard.  Whenever needed, he accompanied the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Team to prepare food for victims and volunteers.   He was preceded in death by his parents, George Washington and Olivia (Tomlin) Edwards; siblings, Samuel, Hugh, Amy, Dura and Wallace (Happy).

 

Survivors include his wife, Betty Cordell Edwards of Covington; daughter, Denise E. Love and her husband, Fred W. Love, Jr. of Riverdale; granddaughter, Markie Michelle Love; several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Jimmy will be held Monday, September 9, 2013, 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Obit - Janet H. Jackson


 

Janet H. Jackson of Covington, passed away September 5, 2013, at the age of 77. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and sister-in-law. She was affectionately known as J.J. by her grandchildren, and cherished her time spent with them. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hillman Jackson; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willis Hackett; sister, Rebecca Hackett Dowdy; and her brother, John Hackett. The family of Mrs. Jackson is especially grateful to the loving caregivers at Longleaf Hospice and Right At Home.

Survivors include her daughter, Jana Milton and her fiancé, Monty Dustin; son and daughter-in-law, Wade and Diana Jackson; 4 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; sisters, Omer Kelly, Marianne Lott; sisters-in-law, Anne J. White, Jo Jackson; brothers, Joseph Hackett, Paul and Debra Hackett; several nieces and nephews.

A Graveside Service for Mrs. Jackson will be held Sunday, September 8, 2013, 2:00 PM, at Lawnwood Memorial Park, in Covington, with Rob Lanford officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Mrs. Jackson to a charity of one's choice.

Obit for Gilberto "Gil" Martinez

Gilberto "Gil" Martinez, of Covington, passed away on September 5, 2013, at the age of 72.   Gil was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather.  Gil came to Fort Benning, Georgia, for Ranger training where he met his wife of 52 years, Lil; they knew each other for one month then were married on July 3, 1961.  After the Army, he went to work for Dekalb County and also worked for Crawford Long Hospital.  Gil retired from the Dekalb County Fire Department as the Battalion Chief after 30 years of service.  He held many positions with the fire department and was involved in the introduction of the EMT Ambulance Service.  An exceptional leader, he was able to get the best out of people who worked under him and always supported them.  He was highly respected within the fire service.  Gil spent long hours outside and in his shop.  He enjoyed wood-working, painting, and planting trees and flowers.  He also enjoyed helping others with their projects.  He was always there for others.  Gil was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro and Jesusa (Moreno) Martinez.

 

Survivors include his wife, Lillian Martinez of Covington, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Tom Johnson; son, Eddie Martinez, all of Covington; grandchildren, Cale and Hanna Cook, of Social Circle, GA, Colten Johnson,  Brooke Wilson, both of Athens, GA, T.J. and Alysha Johnson of Covington; great-grandchildren, Gracie Cook and Aiden Johnson; sisters, Angela Resendez of Houston, TX, Josephine Sosa, of Harlingen, TX, Lela Garcia of Illinois, Connie Moreno of California; brother, Gus DeLaFuenta of Gulf Shores, AL; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Ronnie West, Barry and Terri Vandiver, Oleda Juhan, Ann Corders; several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Gil will be held Sunday, September 8, 2013, 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Dr. Thom Allen officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, September 7, 2013, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.

Obit - Tony Allen

Tony Allen of Covington, passed away September 1, 2013, at the age of 67. Tony was a member of Central Community Church, and devoted his life to God first, then to his family and his community. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. He was loved, and will be missed by all who knew him. Tony was preceded in death by his parents, L.D. and Jessie (Hodges) Allen; sister, Hilda Ayers; and his brothers, J.L. Allen, Jerry Allen, and Frank Allen.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Judy (Cason) Allen; children, Rodney and Shelley Loyd, Kim and Johnny Evans, Anthony and Jennifer Allen, Cliff and Caroline Allen; grandchildren, Ashley Durand, Randy and Taylor Loyd, Jonathon Rose, Gracie Rose, Michelle and Bryce Burton, Lisa and Tyler Adams, Kailyn Evans, Austin Allen, Allie Allen, Graham Allen, Hayes Allen; great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Durand, Sabastian Burton, Baby Loyd; sisters and brother-in-law, Margie Allen, Linda and James Sorrow; brothers and sisters-in-law, Pete and Patt Allen, Charles and Cathy Allen, Mattie Allen; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Tony will be held Thursday, September 5, 2013, 11:00 AM, at Central Community Church, 11157 City Pond Road, in Covington, with Pastors Darrell and Donna Allen officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park.
