Obit for Gilberto "Gil" Martinez

Gilberto "Gil" Martinez, of Covington, passed away on September 5, 2013, at the age of 72.   Gil was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather.  Gil came to Fort Benning, Georgia, for Ranger training where he met his wife of 52 years, Lil; they knew each other for one month then were married on July 3, 1961.  After the Army, he went to work for Dekalb County and also worked for Crawford Long Hospital.  Gil retired from the Dekalb County Fire Department as the Battalion Chief after 30 years of service.  He held many positions with the fire department and was involved in the introduction of the EMT Ambulance Service.  An exceptional leader, he was able to get the best out of people who worked under him and always supported them.  He was highly respected within the fire service.  Gil spent long hours outside and in his shop.  He enjoyed wood-working, painting, and planting trees and flowers.  He also enjoyed helping others with their projects.  He was always there for others.  Gil was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro and Jesusa (Moreno) Martinez.

 

Survivors include his wife, Lillian Martinez of Covington, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Tom Johnson; son, Eddie Martinez, all of Covington; grandchildren, Cale and Hanna Cook, of Social Circle, GA, Colten Johnson,  Brooke Wilson, both of Athens, GA, T.J. and Alysha Johnson of Covington; great-grandchildren, Gracie Cook and Aiden Johnson; sisters, Angela Resendez of Houston, TX, Josephine Sosa, of Harlingen, TX, Lela Garcia of Illinois, Connie Moreno of California; brother, Gus DeLaFuenta of Gulf Shores, AL; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Ronnie West, Barry and Terri Vandiver, Oleda Juhan, Ann Corders; several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Gil will be held Sunday, September 8, 2013, 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Dr. Thom Allen officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, September 7, 2013, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.
