Obit - Joe Brown

Joe Brown, age 61, of Covington, passed away June 30, 2014. Joe was a graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology, where he received his Bachelor's degree in Industrial Management, and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. He was an avid Yellow Jackets fan, and enjoyed riding motorcycles and collecting classic rock albums. Joe loved traveling, and was able to visit all 50 states and 32 professional baseball stadiums. He cherished his family dearly, and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Ray Brown; and his sister, Dianne Turner.

 

Survivors include his wife, Huanne Brown of Covington; son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Carly Brown of Atlanta; mother, Jackie Brown of Oxford; sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Chuck Kerwin of Memphis, TN; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Memorial Service for Joe will be held Wednesday, July 2, 2014, 7:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, with Don Turner officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday, two hours prior to the service, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.

 

Obit - John Dunevent

John W. (Johnny) Dunevent of Porterdale, passed away June 30, 2014, at the age of 87. Seaman Second Class Dunevent proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of Porterdale Baptist Church where he faithfully attended Sunday School weekly. In addition, he was a member of the American Legion Post #32, in Covington. Mr. Dunevent owned and operated Dunevent's TV Service for more than 20 years. He enjoyed fishing, camping with his wife, and was always willing to help anyone he could. He was loved, and will be missed by his family and friends. Mr. Dunevent was preceded in death by his loving wife, Clara (Mask) Dunevent; parents, Lottie and Estelle (Taylor) Dunevent; and his sisters, Elizabeth Bell and Norma Lee Hawkins.

 

Survivors include his children, Gloria and Joe Jordan of Porterdale, Kathy and Gary Bradford, Terry Dunevent, all of Covington, John Dunevent of Porterdale; grandchildren, Kimberly Brewer, Jodie Volkart, Lamar Bradford, Delaine Cason; 9 great-grandchildren; sisters, Minnie Belle Wheeler of Conyers, Barbara Long of Porterdale; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Dunevent will be held Wednesday, July 2, 2014, 2:00 PM, at Porterdale Baptist Church, with Rev. Dickie Johnson officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Mr. Dunevent will lie in state, at the church Wednesday, from 1:30 – 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, Tuesday, July 1, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM.

Obit - Robbie Graham

Robbie Graham of Oxford, passed away June 28, 2014, at the age of 51. Robbie was a proud veteran of the United States Army. He was "tech savvy" and liked working with computers. In addition, he enjoyed history, genealogy, spending time outdoors fishing and attending his church, Allen Memorial United Methodist Church. Most of all, he loved his children dearly. Robbie was preceded in death by his mother, Bernice (Brown) Harris; and his father, Joe Graham.

 

Survivors include his children, Adam Joseph Brown, Melissa Graham, Robbie Graham; sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and JR Hilliard of Oxford; brothers and sisters-in-law, Keith and Mary Brown of Chester, VA, Wade and Melody Daniel of Clarksville, GA, several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

 

A Memorial Service for Robbie will be held Tuesday, July 1, 2014, 11:00 AM, at Allen Memorial United Methodist Church, in Oxford, with Rev. Max Vincent officiating. His cremated remains will be interred, following his service, in Lawnwood Memorial Park, in Covington.   

 

Obit - Reba Curbow

Reba Curbow, age 87, of Covington, passed away June 29, 2014. Mrs. Curbow was a dedicated employee of Bell System, for 40 years, before her retirement in 1984. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dempsey Curbow; parents, Calvin and Eula Mae (Livingston) Wicker.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia C. and Jerry Davis of Conyers; grandchildren, Tommy Davis of Winder, Chris and Lauren Davis of McDonough, Brandon and Wendy Davis of Gray; great-grandchildren, Cayle Davis, Caitlin Davis, Cooper Davis, Belle Davis, Benson Davis; brother and sister-in-law, Aubey and Mildred Wicker of Pomaria, SC; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Curbow will be held Tuesday, July 1, 2014, 11:00 AM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, with Rev. Allan Tarr and Rev. Steve Roach officiating, and interment following in Westview Cemetery, in Atlanta. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, June 30, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Linda McGilton of Covington, passed away June 29, 2014, at the age of 68. She enjoyed painting, working in her yard, attending horse races and traveling, especially to the mountains. Linda loved the Lord, cherished her family dearly, and was a wonderful caretaker to many of her family members. She was preceded in death by her father, Lunnie Sockwell; sisters, Betty Bell, Joanne Johnson; and her brother, Roscoe Sockwell.

Obit - Rev. Garland Stone

 

Rev. Garland Stone of Oxford, passed away June 18, 2014, at the age of 71. Rev. Stone founded and served Full Gospel Holiness Church, for 35 years, where he loved his church family as his own. He enjoyed woodworking, going to auctions and visiting Amish country. Rev. Stone was a kind-hearted man who never met a stranger. He was a loving husband, father and Papa, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Robert and Frances (Palmer) Stone; and his brothers, Phillip Stone, Kennedy Stone and Larry Stone.

George T. Day, Sr., 76, of Covington, passed away June 17, 2014. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, in Oxford. Day Tree Service, established in 1969, was the first tree service in Newton County. Mr. Day owned and operated his tree service while working for Lithonia Lighting for 21 years. He enjoyed spending time outdoors camping and boating. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who cherished his family and treasured his time with them. Mr. Day was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Annie Lois (Woodruff) Day.

 

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Patricia (Pat) E. Obit - Michael Lyda

Michael Lyda, 20, of Covington, passed away June 12, 2014. Michael enjoyed playing video games, spending time with his friends, listening to music and working on cars. He was good with his hands, and liked taking things apart, only to reassemble them. He loved his family, and cherished his time with them. Michael was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Juanita Rose Snyder; paternal grandparents, Loyd Madison and Sandra Jane Lyda.

Wellovee Harris Willis of Oxford, went to be with her Lord and Savior, June 10, 2014. She was born April 18, 1938, in Delta, Alabama, to the late J.V. and Elizabeth (Taylor) Boggs. Mrs. Willis was a member of Corinth Christian Church, in Loganville. She traveled often, and especially enjoyed her trips to Aruba and Hawaii. Mrs. Willis adored her family, and cherished her time with her children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Norman Harris; son, Tim Harris; and her brothers, Jerry Boggs and Randall Boggs.

 

She is survived by her husband, Aubrey Eddie Willis; daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Steve Ellison; son, Mark Harris, all of Oxford; grandchildren, Amanda Harris, Lainey Harris, Shaun Harris, Brian Ellison, John Ellison; great-grandson, Garrett Harris; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Rev. Franklin D. Kitchens


Rev. Franklin D. Kitchens, 80, of Conyers, went to be with the Lord, June 9, 2014.  Rev. Kitchens pastored Harmony Baptist Church, in Covington, and West End Baptist Church, in Social Circle. In addition, he also served as an interim pastor for Salem Baptist Church, in Conyers and Mt. Zion Baptist Church, in Oxford. He was a member of Newton Baptist Church, and loved his church families as much as his own family. He enjoyed wood crafts, cooking, gardening and southern gospel singings. Rev. Kitchens was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He cherished spending time with his children and grandchildren, and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and adored him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clinton Artis and Mary Lou (Johnson) Kitchens.

 

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Carolyn (Day) Kitchens of Conyers; sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Bonnie Kitchens of Social Circle, Douglas and Kathy Kitchens, Mickey and Vickie Kitchens, all of Conyers; grandchildren, Jeremy and Cindy Kitchens, Adrienne Kitchens, Clint and Tracey Kitchens, Emily and Austin Mitchell; sisters, Louise Smith of Conyers, Ruth Gleaton of Covington; sister-in-law, Cornelia Day Kitchens of Oxford; several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Frances Rowland

Frances Rowland of Covington, passed away June 9, 2014, at the age of 84. For 38 years, Mrs. Rowland dedicated herself as a school teacher in Newton, Rockdale and Cobb counties, taking short breaks only to raise her six boys. Her teaching career included reading, science, biology and girl's PE. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church, in Covington, where she taught Sunday School for several years, and was a member of the Gleaners Sunday School class for 54 years. Mrs. Rowland liked spending time outdoors, camping and was an avid sports enthusiast. She enjoyed golf and playing women's professional basketball, in Atlanta. She taught swimming and diving lessons, and worked with Louise Fowler as a tennis instructor. Mrs. Rowland loved her family dearly, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her son, Jody Rowland; and her parents, Dewey and Maggie (Adams) Hicks.

 

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Tom C. Rowland; sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Gaye Rowland of Oxford, Bill and Susan Rowland of N. Augusta, SC, Mark and Lisa Rowland of Dublin, Danny and Dorraine Rowland of Conyers, Randall and Elisa Rowland of Niceville, FL; 15 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Charlotte Hood of Oxford; brother, Jimmy Hicks of Covington; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Barton Douglas DeHaven, age 65, of Covington, passed away June 7, 2014.  A 1971 graduate of Georgia Tech, Bart played baseball with the Tech team.  He was a sports enthusiast, with football being his favorite.  Bart was a very social person who also enjoyed hiking and going to the mountains.  He was preceded in death by his parents, John B., Jr. and Rose Etta (Higgins) DeHaven.

 

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Linda H. DeHaven; sons and daughter-in-law, Barton DeHaven, Jr. "Rocky" of Covington, Dustin and Kimberly DeHaven of Thomasville, and Storm DeHaven, also of Covington; brother, John B. DeHaven, III and wife, Vicki, of New Orleans, LA.

Billy Joe Queen, Sr.

Billy Joe Queen, Sr., age 71, of Covington, passed away June 8, 2014.  While he was physically able, Mr. Queen enjoyed going to church.  He loved being outdoors, gardening and doing yardwork.  He will be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father, and grandfather.  Mr. Queen was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Howard and Lula (Henry) Queen.

Barton Douglas DeHaven, age 65, of Covington, passed away June 7, 2014.  A 1971 graduate of Georgia Tech, Bart played baseball with the Tech team.  He was a sports enthusiast, with football being his favorite.  Bart was a very social person who also enjoyed hiking and going to the mountains.  He was preceded in death by his parents, John B., Jr. and Rose Etta (Higgins) DeHaven.

 

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Linda H. DeHaven; sons and daughter-in-law, Barton DeHaven, Jr. "Rocky" of Covington, Dustin and Kimberly DeHaven of Thomasville, and Storm DeHaven, also of Covington; brother, John B. DeHaven, III and wife, Vicki, of New Orleans, LA.

Hugh Troy Butler, Sr.

Hugh Troy Butler, Sr., age 55, of Oxford, passed away June 6, 2014.  A native of Newton County, his family was among the first Newton County settlers.  He was a member of The Pentecostals of McDonough where he enjoyed sharing his gift of music.  He played guitar and bass, loved to sing and was a very talented artist.  Loving father and husband, he will be sorely missed.  Hugh was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Butler, and father, Raleigh Butler; and brother, Johnny Butler.

 

Survivors include his wife, Ann Willene Price Butler; daughter, Breanna M'Lynn Butler; sons and daughter-in-law, Hugh Troy Butler, II, all of Oxford, Andrew William and Rachel Winnell Harvey Bulter of Loganville; sister and brother-in-law, Rollene and Jim Blackstock; brother and sisters-in-law, Gary Patrick and Janice Butler all of Newborn, Clarice Price Whitfield of Oxford; several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Hugh will be held Tuesday, June 10, 2014, 1:00 P.M., at The Pentecostals of McDonough, 1181 Highway 42 N, in McDonough, with his son, Andrew William Butler and Pastor Charles P. Harvey officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, June 9, from 5:00 – 9:00 P.M.

Idus Andrew Johnson

Idus Andrew Johnson, of Covington, passed away June 6, 2014.  He was 77 years of age at the time of his death.  Mr. Johnson retired from Bibb Manufacturing and enjoyed spending time fishing. 

 

Surviving Mr. Johnson are his wife of 46 years, Mary L. Johnson; daughter and son-in-law, Camella Danette and Robert Orzechowski; sons and daughters-in-law, John Howard "Butch" and Charlotte Johnson, Michael Andrew and Eve Johnson; grandchildren, Corie, Jessica, Robin, Taylor; great-granddaughters, Ashton and Jaden; brother, Bill Johnson; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Johnson will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, June 9, 2014, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, with Rev. Dickie Johnson officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Sunday, June 8, from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M

Obit - Harold Kenneth Grant

Harold Kenneth Grant, 85, of Covington, GA, passed away June 4, 2014. Mr. Grant was a 1946 graduate of Girardville High School, in Girardville, PA. Following graduation, Mr. Grant joined and proudly served in the United States Army. He continued serving his country, as Head of Publications for the Office of Naval Research, until his retirement in 1978. Preceding him in death were his parents, Earl and Lucy (Speice) Grant; and his brother, Lewis Grant.

 

Survivors include his daughter, Kathryn Grant of Covington, GA; sister, Grace Schaefer of York, PA; and several nieces and nephews.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Grant will be held at a later date.

Obit - Gene Brown

Gene Burgess Brown, 85, of Covington, passed away May 31, 2014.  He was born February 18, 1929, in Decatur, GA, to the late Paul and Myrtice Brown.  Mr. Brown proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War.  After retiring from Kraft Foods, he was self-employed for many years.  Preceding him in death were his wife, Carolyn; sons, Gene, Jr. and Scott; grandson, Casey Lowry; and brother, Jim.

 

Survivors include his daughter, June Lowry (Joe); special niece and caregiver, Joyce Bradford (Jerry); three grandchildren; one great-grandson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Brown will be held at 12:30 PM, Thursday, June 5, 2014 at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, with Rev. Jerry Bradford officiating.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service, from 11:30 A.M. – 12:30 P.M.  A private interment will follow at Dawn Memorial Park in Decatur. 

 

Obit - Scott King

Scott Layne King, 45, of Covington, passed away June 3, 2014. Scott was a member of the First Baptist Church, in Covington, and a 1986 graduate of Heritage High School, in Conyers. After graduating from Heritage, he continued his education at DeKalb Technical College and later graduated from Florida Baptist Theological College with his degree in Christian education. He worked for a printing company as a graphic artist, was an elementary school teacher and a youth minister. His hard work is what enabled him to pay his own way through college. Scott's passion for youth led him to become instrumental in bringing World Changers to Avon Park, Florida. World Changers is an organization providing Christian youth and adults with opportunities to serve a community both physically and spiritually. He was the most fun loving, happy person; and was a devoted son, brother and uncle. He cherished his family, and enjoyed doing special things for his sisters, including paying for each of their prom dresses, and even contacting a Miss USA coach to help coach his sister, Keri, for the Newton County High School pageant. Scott was loved by many, and will be missed by all who were lucky enough to call him friend.

 

Survivors include his parents, Jimmy and Brenda E. King of Covington; sisters and brothers-in-law, Melanie and Ricky Jones of Covington, Jennifer and Jeremy Lilly of Oxford, Keri King of Covington; nieces and nephews, Emilie and Jake Jones, Payton and Averie Lilly, Anslee King; and his special friend, Jakie Hogan of Covington.

 

Funeral Services for Scott will be held Friday, June 6, 2014, 11:00 AM, at the First Baptist Church, in Covington, with Dr. Cody McNutt and Dr. Michael Lawson officiating. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall, Thursday, June 5, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM. Interment will be held Saturday, June 7, in Arab Memorial Cemetery, following services at Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel, in Arab, Alabama. Flowers are accepted, or donations may be made to the Scott King Memorial Fund, c/o West Newton Elementary School, 13387 Brown Bridge Road, Covington, GA 30016.

Obit - Talitha Breed Ozley

Talitha Breed Ozley, wife of Rev. John Ozley, left this life to be with the Lord on June 2 at 2:15 PM while in hospice care at home. She was a devoted wife of 65 years, and served with "Preacher John" in various pastoral assignments across North Georgia, the most years of which were in Cherokee and Newton Counties. As a beautiful and gracious lady, Talitha served with diligence, love and generosity. She will be remembered by many friends where she served as musician and choral director, as well as teaching music and voice. She was educated in the public schools of Roanoke and Lafayette, AL, with some study at Trevecca, Young Harris and LaGrange colleges. She was preceded in death by her parents, John E. and Ethel Martin Breed; son John, Jr.; four sisters and two brothers.

 

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Angie O. Fox (Marcus) and Susan O. Owen (Tom); daughter-in-law, Julie Ozley; one sister, Martha B. Privett (George); six grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and her sisters-in-law, Mavis Karr and Catherine Ozley.

 

A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, June 5, 3:30 PM, at Julia A. Porter Memorial United Methodist Church of Porterdale.  Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday, June 4, from 7:00 – 8:30 PM. Gifts in her memory, in lieu of flowers, should be made to Julia A. Porter Memorial United Methodist Church of Porterdale, where she served with her husband seventeen years, as their last fulltime appointment.

 

As is said in Proverbs 31, "Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also and he praises her."
