Frances Rowland of Covington, passed away June 9, 2014, at the age of 84. For 38 years, Mrs. Rowland dedicated herself as a school teacher in Newton, Rockdale and Cobb counties, taking short breaks only to raise her six boys. Her teaching career included reading, science, biology and girl's PE. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church, in Covington, where she taught Sunday School for several years, and was a member of the Gleaners Sunday School class for 54 years. Mrs. Rowland liked spending time outdoors, camping and was an avid sports enthusiast. She enjoyed golf and playing women's professional basketball, in Atlanta. She taught swimming and diving lessons, and worked with Louise Fowler as a tennis instructor. Mrs. Rowland loved her family dearly, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her son, Jody Rowland; and her parents, Dewey and Maggie (Adams) Hicks.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Tom C. Rowland; sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Gaye Rowland of Oxford, Bill and Susan Rowland of N. Augusta, SC, Mark and Lisa Rowland of Dublin, Danny and Dorraine Rowland of Conyers, Randall and Elisa Rowland of Niceville, FL; 15 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Charlotte Hood of Oxford; brother, Jimmy Hicks of Covington; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service for Mrs. Rowland will be held Saturday, June 14, 2014, 3:00 PM, at the First Baptist Church, in Covington, with Rev. Charles Reynolds and Rev. Len Strozier officiating. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall Saturday, prior to her service, from 12:45 – 2:45 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church, c/o Sanctuary Fund, 1139 Usher Street NE, Covington, GA 30014.
