Obit for John A. Stark


FUNERAL NOTICE

 

 

                                                                                                                       

John A. Stark of Covington, passed away October 30, 2014, at the age of 85. Mr. Stark was an active member of the First Baptist Church, in Covington, where he faithfully taught Sunday school for several years. He was raised, in Lawrenceville, by his parents, Hope and Evelyn Stark. When his high school burned, he attended Emory at Oxford and North Georgia College. Mr. Stark graduated from the United States Naval Academy, in 1951, and served as a carrier pilot for the U.S. Navy. He later retired from the reserves as a Lieutenant Commander. After his active duty service, and once he completed graduate school at Georgia Tech, he married Frances Ginn, from Covington, and together they moved to Clearwater, Florida, where he worked for Honeywell. Several years later, they moved to Atlanta where Mr. Stark began his career at Lockheed. He retired in 1989, and they moved to Covington, in 1995. In addition to his work as an engineer, he was a registered land surveyor. Mr. Stark greatly enjoyed his Tuesday morning breakfast group, which met at Bojangles, as well as the monthly men's lunch group. He enjoyed flying small airplanes and growing blueberries. Mr. Stark cherished his family, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

 

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Frances G. Stark; children, Lois S. and Felix Peña of Fairfax, VA, Elizabeth S. and Donald Dorsey of Dayton, OH, Stephen J. and Naomi Stark of Signal Mountain, TN; grandchildren, Melita Peña, Carla Peña, Cameron Dorsey, John Dorsey, Danielle Dorsey, Rachel Dorsey, J.D. Stark, Marjorie Stark, Katherine Stark, Jacob Stark; brother and sister-in-law, Judge Homer M. and Mary Louise Stark of Good Hope; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Stark will be held Monday, November 3, 2014, 11:00 AM, at the First Baptist Church of Covington, with Rev. Charles Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow, at 1:30 PM, at Shadowlawn Cemetery, 87 Scenic Highway, in Lawrenceville. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall, Sunday, November 2, from 4:00 – 6:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 1139 Usher Street NE, Covington, GA 30014; or a charity of one's choice.

Obit - Evelyn Lewis

Evelyn Lewis of Marietta, passed away October 30, 2014, at the age of 92. Mrs. Lewis enjoyed crocheting, playing games, gardening and working in her son's greenhouse. She loved the Lord and raised her family by faith. She cherished her family dearly, and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by her husband, Erby Lewis; son, Kenneth Crews; parents, Coil and Ira (Blalock) McCarty; and her brothers, GT McCarty, Coil McCarty, Erskine McCarty.

Obit-Jack Gibbs

H.A. "Jack" Gibbs, Jr., of Covington, passed away October 27, 2014, at the age of 88. Mr. Gibbs proudly served his country, in the United States Army, during World War II. He was a lifetime member of North Covington United Methodist Church, and spent most of his career in the grocery industry. He enjoyed vegetable gardening and loved gospel singing. Mr. Gibbs was preceded in death by his parents, Herman Anderson, Sr., and Allie Belle (Young) Gibbs; and his brother, Robert D. Gibbs.

 

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Sybil S. Gibbs; children, H.A. "Jack" Gibbs, III, and his wife, Gwen of Covington, Brenda G. Martin and her husband, Paul of Madison, Greg A. Gibbs of Covington; grandchildren, Mark Gibbs, Michael Gibbs, Pam Brooks, Mandi Jones, Jennifer Loncon, Allie Gunnells, Megan Gibbs; five great-granddaughters; sister, Betty Goins; brother, W.D. Gibbs; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Graveside Service for Mr. Gibbs will be held Wednesday, October 29, 2014, 2:00 PM, at Lawnwood Memorial Park, 1111 Access Road, in Covington. William Keith (Bill) Addison

William Keith (Bill) Addison of Conyers, GA passed away October 24, 2014, at the age of 61.  Bill was an avid West Virginia University football fan and a movie buff.  He loved sports.   Coaching was a passion!   Although most of his years were spent in Covington, GA, Bluefield, WV was always his home.  Bill was a special education teacher for the majority of his career, retiring from the Newton County School System after 20+ years of service.  He loved spending time with his family and was a great friend to many.  While battling cancer, his motto was "be thankful in all things," and he exemplified this throughout his life.

 

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Addison of Conyers; daughter, Emily Addison also of Conyers; father, Bill Addison and his wife, Jan of Corbin KY; sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Mike Tagge of Covington; brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Michaela Addison of St. Charles, MO; step-sister, Jaime Stafford of Lexington, KY; niece, Amanda Turner of Minneapolis, MN; nephews, John and Steve Addison of St. Louis, MO; great-nephew, Brayden Turner of Minneapolis, MN; as well as many friends.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Addison will be held Tuesday, October 28, 2014, 6:00 PM, at Conyers Church of God, 125 Highway 138 NE, with Dr. Mark Hargrove officiating.  The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Monday, October 27, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.  Entombment will take place Friday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Bluewell, WV.

William Herbert White

William Herbert White of Oxford passed away October 22, 2014.  He was born November 19, 1934 in Monticello, GA to the late W.A. and Lorene (Lewis) White.  Mr. White was an Eagle Scout and a veteran of the US Army.  He graduated from the University of Georgia School of Business as well as LSU School of Banking.  He was a successful and respected member in the banking field, retiring after four decades from Main Street Bank.  Mr. White was a long-time member of Allen Memorial United Methodist Church.

 

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Pace White; daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia and Jimmy Waldrop, Jennifer and Scott Eavenson, Amanda and Justin Smith; son, Richard White; grandchildren, Jess Waldrop, Jesse Smith and Anna White.

 

 

A Memorial Graveside Service for Mr. White will be held, Saturday, October 25, 2014, 2:00 PM at Oxford Historical Cemetery, Highway 81, in Oxford with Rev. Thomas Johnson officiating.   In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Allen Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 117, Oxford, GA  30054 or Newton County Salvation Army, P.O. Obit - Albert Norton, Jr.

Albert Norton, Jr., of Covington, died October 15, 2014, at the age of 84. As a Korean War veteran, he proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. He retired from Woco Pep Oil Co., in Covington, after 50 years of dedicated service. He enjoyed golf, fishing, playing poker, working in his tomato garden and volunteering his time with the Elks Lodge. Mr. Norton was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who loved his family dearly, and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Betty Irene (Morton) Norton; parents, Albert Sidney, Sr., and Ezell (Maffett) Norton; sisters, Cornelia Ludewig, Geraldine Parnell, Janet Jordan; and his brother, Billy Wayne Norton.

 

Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Sidney and Jody Norton of Snellville; grandchildren, Ashley Norton of Savannah, Lauren and Derrick Muzzin of Norcross; sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley Cantrell of Covington, Debbie and Grant Ozburn of McDonough, David Ludewig of Frederick, MD; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Obit - Deborah Harvey

Deborah Harvey, age 60, of Covington, passed away October 9, 2014. Mrs. Harvey, loving wife of Pastor Charles P. Harvey, dedicated her life to serving the Lord as both a pastor's wife and church mother at The Pentecostals of McDonough. She enjoyed traveling and sharing her gifts of music through singing and playing the piano. Mrs. Harvey was tender-hearted and soft-spoken in nature. "Grammy", as she was affectionately known, cherished her time with her children and grandchildren. They were her life, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Mrs. Harvey was preceded in death by her father, O C Muncrief; and her brother, Randy Muncrief.

 

Survivors include her husband of 32 years, Pastor Charles P. Harvey; children and their spouses, Patrick and Rhonda Harvey, Crystal and Andrew Little, Rachel and Andy Butler; grandchildren, Kaitlyn Little, Jadyn Harvey, Brooklyn Little, London Little; mother, Geneva Muncrief, all of Covington; sister and brother-in-law, Becky and Bobby Burkeen of Fort Stockton, TX; brother and sister-in-law, Ricky and Ivey Muncrief of Dyersburg, TN; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Jackie Dean Garrison

Jackie Dean Garrison, of Covington, passed away October 8, 2014, at the age of 71.  Mrs. Garrison was a member of Red Oak United Methodist Church.  She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.  She was preceded in death by her husbands, Clyde Mitchem and Marvin Garrison; and parents, W.S. and Ruth Pike.

 

Mrs. Garrison is survived by her special friend, Jim Wren of Covington;  daughters and sons-in-law, Rita and William Payne of Porterdale, Ruth and Michael Burris of Carrollton; grandchildren, Misty Maddox of Monroe, Blake Payne of Loganville, Jeffery Burris of Carrollton, Jessica Johnson of Decatur, TN; as well as 9 great grandchildren.

 

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Garrison will be held Saturday, October 11, 2014, 3:00 PM, at Red Oak United Methodist Church, 14105 Highway 36, Covington, GA, with Rev. Miguel Velez-Andujar officiating.

 

Obit - Charles Nelson "Chuck" Parry

Charles Nelson (Chuck) Parry, 72, of Oxford, died Tuesday, October 7th, in his home following a short illness.  He was the son of Evelyn and Nelson Parry of Florida, and a 1960 graduate of Melbourne High School. He married the love of his life, Patricia Ann, in 1963, in Melbourne, Florida. They moved to their current home, in Oxford, in 1972. Chuck was the co-owner of P.M. Auto Service, in Conyers, for 29 years. He was an avid motorcyclist, a lifetime member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association and most recently an active member of the Chick fil-A Moo Cow Bikers club. He will always be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and booming laugh.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Parry of Oxford; daughters and sons-in-law, Kimberly and Lance Lang, Kristine and David Pagano; grandchildren,  Jackson, Cooper and Carter Lang, Ethan Pagano, all of Beverly, MA; sister, Page Graham of Knightdale, NC; several nieces and nephews. 

 Due to his singular ability to confound and amuse, we have always used his name as a verb.   In his honor, we are submitting the following definition to Merriam-Webster for publication:

1.  To annoy or amuse in an effort to get goods and services at a reduced rate or for free.
2.  To ask a question without context and with no further dialog.
3.  To take the most circuitous route to a destination for no discernible reason.

A visitation will be held at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home Friday, October 10th, from 6 to 8 pm.

Nell Mitcham Nixon

Nell Mitcham Nixon, of Covington, passed away October 7, 2014.  Mrs. Nixon was very involved with the Salem Camp Meetings, even attending this year at 102 years of age!  She was a member of First Baptist Church in Covington as well as many civic organizations.  A cancer survivor herself, Mrs. Nixon volunteered her time providing transportation for others to their medical appointments or treatments.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Nixon; parents, Clode and Cora Mitcham; brothers, Clode Seymour Mitcham and James P. Mitcham, Sr.  Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews, as well as a host of friends.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Nixon will be held Thursday, October 9, 2014, 2:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, GA, with Dr. Carl Hart and Rev. Charles Reynolds officiating, and interment following in Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery, 3962 Salem Road, in Covington.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 – 2:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Mrs. Nixon's memory to the Median and Mature Adult Ministry of the First Baptist Church, 1139 Usher St., Covington, GA  30014.

Obit - G. Orville Capps

 

G. Orville Capps of Covington, passed away October 1, 2014, at the age of 88. Mr. Capps was a member of County Line Baptist Church. He was a dedicated employee, of the City of Covington, where he worked several years prior to his retirement. Prior to his employment with the City, Mr. Capps worked for Gas, Inc. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan, enjoyed watching wrestling and spending time outdoors gardening and fishing. Mr. Capps was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Capps; daughter, Polly Capps McDonald; and his parents, Green and Ozella (Shaw) Capps.

 

Survivors include his son, Andy Capps; son-in-law, Sonny McDonald; grandchildren, Annson and Andy Bates, Annslee and Lennie Barker, Tony and Christine Capps, Tim Capps; great-grandchildren, Matt Bates, Patrick Miller, Nicholas Miller, Michael Bates, Aubrey Michelle Capps; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Steve Johnson

Steve Johnson, of Conyers, passed away October 1, 2014, at the age of 54.  He loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren.  Mr. Johnson was a Minister of the Gospel and loved reading his Bible and studying the gospel.  In addition to enjoying learning about the civil war, he loved playing his guitar and singing.  Mr. Johnson also enjoyed collecting key chains, books, drawing and painting.  Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, James Bunyon and Joanne (Sockwell) Johnson.

 

Survivors include his wife, Polly Pauline Johnson; daughter, Rebecca Crystal Johnson; son, Junior McClain Johnson, all of Conyers; grandchildren, Joshua Eugene Moulder of Buchannan, Kiari Lisa Beth Scott and Thomas Scott, IV of Conyers; sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Bob Moss; brother and sister-in-law, David and Gloria Johnson, all of Conyers; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Reuben Yearwood, age 79, of Covington, passed away September 30, 2014. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and going fishing. Mr. Yearwood loved his family dearly, and especially cherished his time spent with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Howard and Lovie (Chambers) Yearwood.
