Phyllis Gravitt obit

Surrounded by her children and husband in her own home, Phyllis Marie Gravitt of Covington, GA passed away December 2, 2015. Although she fought breast, bone, and brain cancer so well the past few years, that's not what defines her.

After leaving her birth state of Michigan, Phyllis moved to Georgia in the early 1970's to raise a family and teach English and Gifted students at Floyd Middle School. During her teaching years, her entrepreneurial spirit led her to start her own travel company; this business endeavor would ultimately become her life's work. Growing her company fed her desire to serve others and to create fun and educational experiences for her travellers. Phyllis lived a life dedicated to the service of others, whether it was her family, students, friends, travellers, or church members.

Phyllis is survived by her husband The Reverend Richard Gravitt, children Bridget (Andrew) Doss, John (Heather) Trainor, stepchildren Melodie (Darrell) Hayes, Rebecca (Joel) Coffey, brother Paul (Elaine) Hebert, sister Beth (Roddy) Yancey, and grandchildren Rebecca, Jack, Mason, William, Phillip, Madison, Aislinn, and Austin. Phyllis is survived by so many great friends that this newspaper would run out of room if we listed them.

Funeral Services for Phyllis will be held Sunday, December 6, 2015, 3pm, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Mike Wadley officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday 2-5pm and Sunday 1-3pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Lovejoy UMC for Rick's pastoral retirement fund at 12835 Highway 36, Covington, GA 30014.

This obituary was jointly-written and proofread by her daughter and son and it's believed that this former English teacher would be quite pleased.
