Edna Wilson
Edna Dunevant Wilson of Covington passed away January 28, 2016, at the age of 95. Mrs. Wilson was a member of Porterdale Baptist Church where she enjoyed worship and fellowship with her church family. She retired from Covington Molding after more than 20 years of service. Famous for her biscuits, she enjoyed cooking and family gatherings under the old oak tree. In her previous years, she and her husband loved traveling together. Mrs. Wilson's greatest joy was working in her yard. Preceding her in death were her husband, Judson Wilson; parents, Sam and Susie Dunevant; and six siblings.
Survivors include her sons, Billy Mashburn of Covington; Gary Mashburn of Spring Hill, TN; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service for Mrs. Wilson will be held Saturday, January 30, 2016, 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell and Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street in Covington, with Rev. Dickie Johnson officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends are welcome to visit with the family two hours prior to the service, from 1:00 – 3:00 PM.

Obit - Betty May (Ray) Brewer
Betty May (Ray) Brewer, age 72, of Conyers, passed away January 26, 2016. Mrs. Brewer was an incredibly brilliant seamstress, an artist, even, who shared her talent while working for Walton Clothes for many years. Following her employment with Walton Clothes, she continued working for Sealy Corporation, before retiring in 2010. She was a wonderful cook and loved watching and feeding the birds who would often return to her yard. Mrs. Brewer was a Godly woman, strong in her faith, who loved her church family at Rockdale True Gospel Pentecostal Church. She was loved by so many and will truly be missed by those who cherished her most. Preceding her in death were her parents, James Ernest and Nannie May (Wilkins) Ray; sister, Margaret Williams; and her brothers, James and Robert Ray.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Randy Carney of Ball Ground, Stephanie and Joey Ralston of Covington; sons and daughter-in-law, Alex and Lisa Brewer of Rockmart, Sammy Brewer of Atlanta; step-son, Alvin Brewer of Stockbridge; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her sister, Janice Bailey of Dallas, GA.
A Celebration of Mrs. Brewer's life will be held Saturday, January 30, 2016, 11:00 AM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Roger True officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends can visit with the family Friday, January 29, from 6:00 – 9:00 PM, at the funeral home. Robbie G. Sanders
Robbie G. Sanders of Covington, passed away January 25, 2016, at the age of 46. An avid NASCAR fan, Robbie also enjoyed drawing. In addition, he cherished the time spent hunting with his dad. His nieces were his greatest joy and the center of his world. Robbie was preceded in death by his father, Jimmy G. Sanders.
Survivors include his wife, Tracy Sanders; mother, Shelda Jean Sanders; nieces, Madison Harber, Morgan Harber; aunt, Bonnie Dial Bartlett; as well as several cousins.
A Memorial Service for Robbie will be held Saturday, January 30, 2016, 2:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington with Dr. William Butch Jackson officiating. Friends may join the family for visitation two hours prior to the service, from 12:00 Noon – 2:00 P.M. Willie Gordon Downing
Willie Gordon Downing died peacefully at his home on January 21, 2016, at the age of 92. He was preceded in death by his father, Gordon Downing; mother, Emma Prince Downing; sister, Pauline Downing; sister, Ollie Peacock. His many friends knew him as "Bud" Downing. Bud was a master builder by trade. He operated a construction firm with his father until his father's death in 1967. After the death of his father, he and his brother-in-law, Z.B. Peacock, operated Peacock Construction Co. until the late 1990's.
Bud was born in Columbus, GA where he and his father built a large portion of Fort Benning during World War II. Also while in Columbus, they built the large building housing the Sunshine Biscuit Co. During the 1970's they built many fine homes in SE DeKalb County. During the late 1970's and 1980 Bud and his brother-in-law built many homes in Newton and Rockdale Counties. Their commercial projects include the building of the U.S. Post Office on Stallings Street in Covington, where their superior brickwork is still prevalent today. They also built most of the Newton County High School and Porterdale Elementary School on Ram Drive. One of their most challenging accomplishments was the moving intact of an old Bibb house on Poplar Street in Porterdale to South Broad Street, and converting it to the Porterdale Post Office.
Bud was very well liked by his many cousins. He was always available to help them with their homework projects where building or engineering knowledge was required. Bud was of the Baptist faith, and his entire lifetime was devoted to his Christian beliefs.
Survivors include his first cousins, Mrs. Emma Bowen, Ms. Ann Joyner, Harry Leon Long, Ms. Sharon Wallace, Mrs. Debbie Gossage; as well as many other cousins.
A Memorial Service for Bud will be held in Memory Chapel Mausoleum at Lawnwood Memorial Park, 4:00 PM, Wednesday, January 27, 2016.

Obit - Deanna Franklin
Deanna Franklin of Covington, passed away January 24, 2016, at the age of 52. Deanna was a faithful member of Canaan Baptist Church and loved her church family dearly. She was a 1611 KJV Bible-believing, missions-minded Christian lady who loved presenting the Gospel and sharing Christ with others. She was a dedicated employee of AT&T for 31 years. Deanna always put others before herself, and will undoubtedly be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her father, Doyle Hensdill.
Survivors include her husband, Barry Franklin; mother, Rena Hensdill; sisters and brothers-in-law, Denise and John Colantoni, Jamie and Junior Sayers; brother, Darryl Hensdill; step-mother, Betty Hensdill; Barry's children, Andy Franklin, Jessica Franklin; grandchildren, Sebastian St. Clair, Hayden St. Clair, Milo Franklin; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Sharon Poteet
Sharon Ann Sealock Poteet of Covington passed away January 22, 2016, at the age of 74. Ms. Poteet was a lifelong member of Julia A. Porter United Methodist Church. She graduated from Newton County High School in 1959. Ms. Poteet owned and operated an income tax business for over 50 years. She enjoyed reading, but her greatest pleasure was the closeness and time shared with her family. Preceding her in death were parents, R.B. and Sarah Sealock.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and John Hill of Social Circle; son, Steven Poteet of Covington; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Jack Digby of Covington; as well as several cousins.
Funeral Services for Ms. Poteet will be held Thursday, January 28, 2016, 2:00 PM, at Julia A. Porter United Methodist Church, with Rev. John Ozley and Rev. Guy Tucker
Guy Tucker, age 77, of Oxford, Ga., passed away on January 22, 2016. Guy had complications from chemo therapy after a brave and long battle with Lymphoma. Guy was predeceased by his parents, Guy and Hazel Tucker, Mom Polly, his siblings, Rose, Walter and Margie, and his only son, Mike. Guy is survied by his wife of 44 years, Margaret and his daughter, Melanie and her husband, Johnny, children: Donna, Brian, Jonathan and Trey, Katie, and son, Landyn, and Lynn & Bobby Kirkland and their son David. He is also survived by his son's wife Melinda Pittman of College Station, Texas and their children, Amber and Adam Anthony with their children, Grace and James Michael of Houston, Texas and Matt and his wife Brandi of Stafford, Texas. He is also survived by his very special nephew, John Painter of Piedmont, Alabama along with his wife, Carol and their children, Mary of Gulf Shores, AL, Amanda and Kelly of Piedmont, AL, along with their husbands and children. He is survived by step-siblings, Shirley Rhinehart. Piedmont, Al., Jack Tucker of Rockhill, SC.
Guy grew up with his large loving family attending Arrington's Chapel, in the Piedmont area, attended Macedonia Baptist Church, Oxford, and currently attended Eastridge Community Church in Covington. He was a member of the "Joyful Noise" small group (35), and another special group of friends that he fellowshipped with regularly.
Guy grew up in the Piedmont, Alabama area and attended Jacksonville State College. He then served in the U. S. Army during the Berlin crisis. He has been retired from Amoco Oil Company for 25 years where he worked for approximately 30 years, starting in Atlanta and ending in Des Moines.
After retirement, he returned to Newton County for nearness to family and to return to our roots. Guy is also the son-in-law of Granny and Paw-Paw McElreath, deceased. After his retirement, he was the manager of the Gum Creek Voting Prescient for over twenty years, following in his mother-in-law's foot-steps. Guy was well known for his cooking. He cooked the Wednesday night dinners at Macedonia Baptist Church, Oxford, Ga. for over ten years touching many lives.
Funeral Services for Mr. Tucker will be held Sunday, January 24, 2016, 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road in Covington, with Rodney Ragsdale (Guy's cousin), Dave Nelson and Scott Moore officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Betty Lou Brewer Carter
Betty Lou (Brewer) Carter, age 77, of Covington, passed away January 19, 2016. Mrs. Carter enjoyed cooking and traveling to the mountains. She loved the Lord and treasured the time she spent worshipping with her church family at Pentecostals of McDonough. Mrs. Carter cherished the time she spent with her family, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Carter; son, Luther Stephenson; parents, William and Cordia Brewer; and her siblings, Mary, Billy, Sib and Janie.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Jane Licona, Robin and Vicente Martinez, Kelly and David Carter, Mary Ann and Andres Hernandez; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Rosie Davis of Conyers, GA, passed away January 19, 2016, at the age of 64. Mrs. Davis was very active in missions, working along with her late husband, Roger Glen Davis. A member of Monroe Apostolic Church, she loved crocheting, cooking, and reading. Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband; parents, Daniel Rufus and Lorine Lamander (Vickers) Ray; and sister, Joan Ray.

SSgt Bradley David Nicholson passed away January 13, 2016, at the age of 29. Born and raised in Covington, Brad was currently stationed in Charleston, SC, where he was proudly serving in the U.S. Air Force. He will be remembered as an avid fisherman. Brad was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Billy Earl Nicholson.

Ollie M. Swaner Cole
Ollie M. Swanner Cole of Covington, formerly of Jacksonville, FL, passed away January 14, 2016, at the age of 95. Mrs. Cole was born to the late John Sheppard and Mary Ethel Cribbs and raised in Polk County, FL. A gifted composer, she worked with many local talent groups in the Jacksonville area, and often referred to her music as "heartsongs". She also enjoyed fishing. Mrs. Cole was preceded in death by her husbands, Malcom "Mack" Swanner, Ned Cole; parents; son, Carroll "Buddy" Swanner; 3 sisters; and 4 brothers.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Martha Ann and Bill Standridge of Covington; grandchildren and their spouses, Vicki and Ken Swain, Steven and Missy Standridge, Dianne Standridge, Brenda and Scott Ashley, Tommy and Sharon Swanner, Tony and Faith Swanner, Cindy and Ray Guess; as well as numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Obit - Virginia Hooten Lott
Virginia Hooten Lott of Covington, GA passed away January 10, 2016 at the age of 91 following a brief illness. The daughter of the late Enoch D. and Lillian Trainer Hooten, Virginia was born in Porterdale on October 25, 1924. A lifelong resident of Newton County, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, William Fred Lott, Sr. The Lott's children include William Fred Lott, Jr. and his wife Lynda Hedgpeth Lott of Cumming, Greensboro resident Susan Lott Beaumont and the late Walter A. "Beau" Beaumont, and Nancy Lott Dawkins and her husband Michael Luther Dawkins also of Greensboro. Additionally, Virginia is survived by grandchildren Stacie and Eric Schulze, Justin and Amy Lott, Jennifer and Stewart Williams, Ryan and Jennifer Lott, Jason and Jenifer Dawkins, Bret Beaumont, and Brittany Beaumont. She was also the proud great-grandmother of eight, including Abby and Nate Schulze, Sofie and Cole Lott, Drew, McKinsey and Durham Williams, and Jonah Beaumont.
Virginia was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Covington and a member of the distinguished Gleaners Sunday School Class. Throughout her lifetime she served in various volunteer and leadership roles not only in her church, but with the American Legion Auxiliary, the Covington Woman's Club, the Elkadettes, the Newton County Recreation Association and the Covington Clean Community Commission. She shared her love of tennis with many friends of Newton and surrounding counties through the Piedmont Area Tennis Association, the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association, and the United States Tennis Association.
Her greatest professional achievement was made possible by countless friends and family of the Bank of Covington where she began her career as a teller in 1957 retiring as Vice President after 32 years of service in 1989.
She will long be remembered for her energy and zest for life. She leaves behind an extended family of friends, former co-workers, customers and caring neighbors from Skyline, Correydale, and most recently, Merryvale Assisted Living.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at First Baptist Church, Covington, GA. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church, 1139 Usher Street, NW, Covington, GA 30014 or Abbey Hospice, 215 Azalea Court, Social Circle, GA 30025.
