Debbie Barnette

Debbie Nicholson Barnette of Bostwick passed away March 30, 2016, at the age of 61. She was the youngest of eight born to the late Clyde and Elsie Lee Nicholson. Debbie had a big heart and enjoyed communicating with her facebook friends from all around the country. In addition, she was a cat lover. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Dennis Nicholson, Gilbert Nicholson and Lois Ware.

 

Survivors include her loving husband of 42 years, Tommy Barnette; sisters, Alice Griffith, Carolyn Baines, Rita Eskew; brother, Roger Nicholson; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Memorial Graveside Service for Mrs. Barnette will be held Sunday, April 3, 2016, 2:30 PM, at Lawnwood Memorial Park, 1111 Access Road in Covington, with Dr. Adam Cooper officiating. Friends are welcome to join the family from 1:00 – 2:15 PM prior to the service at Caldwell and Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road in Covington.  

Peter Rachkovskiy

Peter Ionovich Rachkovskiy of Conyers passed away March 31, 2016, at the age 86.

 

Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Mariya Rachkovskiy; children, Sergey Rachkovskiy, Tatiana Shvets,  Yevgenia Cheban, Vera Lozovan, Svetlana Zheru; 19 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; sisters, Maria Beda, Alexandra Jetari; brother, Nikolay Rachkovskiy; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Rachkovskiy will be held Sunday, April 3, 2016, 2:00 PM,  at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road in Covington, with Pastor Manoliy Glushak officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends may join the family for a visitation and evening service Saturday, April 2, from 7:00 – 9:00 PM, at the funeral home.

Vicie Davis

Vicie L. Davis of Oxford passed away March 29, 2016, at the age of 67. Mrs. Davis enjoyed camping and fishing, and she adored her three dogs, Sally, Zipper and Puppy. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, she cherished the time spent with family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Spence and Stella Hodges Durden.

 

Survivors include her devoted husband of 50 years, Joe Davis; children and their spouses, Gina and Tony Ellis of Oxford, Joey and Lesli Davis of Cumming, Jake and Laney Davis of Oxford; grandchildren, Cory Davis, T.J. Ellis, Kyle Davis, Wade Miller; sister, Linda Parham of Monroe; brother, Gary Durden of Social Circle; niece, Angie Smith of Oxford.  

 

A Private Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

James Bankston

Robert W. Bankston of Greenville, South Carolina, formerly of Covington, passed away March 28, 2016, at the age of 50. Robert enjoyed fishing and listening to heavy metal bands. He was loved and will be missed by all who knew him. Preceding him in death were his maternal grandparents, Jonny and Francis Burnett; paternal grandparents, William and Clara Bankston.

 

Survivors include his mother, Doris Herring; sisters, Patricia Bankston, Jackie Bankston, Teresa Fowler; aunts and uncles, Billie Joe and Gail Burnett, Randy and Barbara Bankston, Mike and Lynn Bankston; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Obit - Pegga Ann Dunn

Peggy Ann Dunn of Dacula, passed away March 28, 2016, at the age of 81.  A native of Newton County and a graduate of Newton County High School, she loved traveling and teaching.  Ms. Dunn taught Middle School in Gwinnett County for 30 years before her retirement.  She was a member of First Baptist Church in Atlanta, but also attended Fairview Presbyterian Church in Lawrenceville.  Ms. Dunn was preceded in death by her son, Michael Lane Dunn; parents, John and Laurie Nell Bates; sister, Bobbie Lev; and brother, Joe Bates.

 

Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Penny Prince, Crystal and Edward Mahalitc; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Trish Prince; grandchildren, Preston Prince, Elizabeth Prince, Travis Cockman, Lynett Welch, Babs Riley, Rodney and Hillary Mahaltic, Robin Dunn, Regina Dunn; great-grandchildren, Will Prince; Cain, Ryan, Shawn, Sophia and Jaicee Welch; Caitlyn, Madelyn, Reid and Anna Riley; Michael Mahalitc; Jaden Dunn; special friend, George Croog; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Norma Elise Brown

Norma Elise Brown of Mansfield, passed away March 28, 2016, at 78 years of age.  Mrs.  Brown enjoyed gardening, sewing, and going on cruises with her family.  She loved her family, and cherished the time she spent with her children, grandchildren, and sisters.  Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her daughter, Stephanie Yvonne Brown; parents, William Woodrow and Mary Rachel McEwen; and sister, Albany Edwina Sexton.

 

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, A. Wallace Brown of Mansfield; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Rick Dutton of McDonough; sons and daughters-in-law, Sam and Karen Brown, Mark and Helynne Brown, all of Hull, GA; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Evelyn Howell of Comer, Sydney Summers, Sylvia Lowe, both of Danielsville, Ivy Ann Murray or Arnoldsville; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Bette T. Phillips of Canton, GA, went home to be with the Lord on Easter morning, March 27, 2016, at the age of 83.

Virginia Aaron

Virginia C. Aaron of Covington passed away March 26, 2016, at the age of 78. Mrs. Aaron was a lifelong member of Salem United Methodist Church. A member of the VFW Post 5290 Ladies Auxiliary playing bingo and dancing were her favorite pastimes.  During her working career, she was employed by Rockdale Hospital, and Town & Country Dodge for 12 years. Well known for her humor, Mrs. Aaron was always the life of the party. She enjoyed doing word search puzzles in her spare time. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, she will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.  Also, Mrs. Aaron, and her sisters shared a very special relationship. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Hugh Aaron; parents, H.P. and Mildred Treadwell Christian; sisters, Glenda Lord and Martha Lester.

 

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Denise and Junior Edwards of Covington, Lisa Aaron and Carolyn Davis of Conyers; grandchildren, Brian and Tracy Edwards, Beth Edwards, Alma Richardson; great-grandchildren, Ryleigh Edwards, Jack Edwards; sisters and brother-in-law, Mary Rogers, Ann and Paul Deerman all of Covington; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Anne Hobbs-Bradley

Anne Hobbs-Bradley of Monroe, passed away March 22, 2016, at the age of 74.  Owner and CEO of Furniture Craftsmen, Inc. for 20 years, Mrs. Hobbs-Bradley enjoyed flower gardening She loved her bulldogs and the UGA Bulldogs.  In addition to being a member of the Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Hobbs-Bradley was a member of Rose Garden Club in Atlanta, in existence since 1925, Rabun Gap Nacoochee Jr. Guild, Junior Committee of the Symphony in Atlanta, Executive Board of Home for Emotionally Disturbed Children, Northside Youth Organization, Pop Warner, and a life member of Henrietta Egleston Hospital Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her parents, Glover Rudolph and Eva (Reynolds) Norris; brother and sister-in-law, Robert R. and Nita Norris.

 

Survivors include her husband, Ronald M. (Brad) Bradley, Jr. of Monroe; daughter, Jennifer Anne Hobbs Locke and husband, Shane, of Marietta; son, Phillip T. Hobbs of Monroe; grandchildren, Katherine Anne Locke, Ashley Hobbs, Benjamin Thomas Hobbs, Abigail Elaine Hobbs, Cece Locke; brother, Peter R. James "Stewart" Lunsford of Covington passed away March 22, 2016, at the age of 76. Mr. Lunsford worked for Newton County for 21 years. He enjoyed listening to classic country music and watching wrestling. Mr. Lunsford will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in by his parents, J.P. and Esther Lunsford; granddaughter, Marlana Lunsford; great-granddaughter, Marley Lunsford; four brothers and three sisters.

Theo (Ted) Anderson Graham

Theo (Ted) Anderson Graham of Conyers, passed away March 12, 2016, at the age of 85.  A resident of Conyers for 35 years, Mr. Graham attended Conyers Presbyterian Church.  He participated with "Silver Sneakers", a senior exercise group, enjoyed gardening, fishing, and time spent at his lake house.  Mr. Graham was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany in the early 1950's.  He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.  Mr. Graham was preceded in death by his wife, Montez (Tez) Grant Graham; parents, Roy Lee, Sr., and Gladys Lou (Patterson) Graham. 

 

Survivors include his sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce and David Burdette of Westminster, SC, Jackie and Pete Sluder of Seneca, SC; brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Mildred Graham of Anderson, SC; as well as several nieces and nephews.   

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Graham will be held Saturday, March 18, 2016, 2:00 PM, at Conyers Presbyterian Church, 911 North Main St., NW, Conyers, GA, with Rev. Deborah Dixon Holt

Deborah Dixon Holt of Oxford, passed away March 13, 2016, at the age of 68.  A member of Eastridge Community Church for 15 years, Mrs. Holt was employed by Sherwood's Flowers.  In addition, she drove a school bus for Newton County Schools.  She will be remembered as a beloved wife, loving mother and grandmother.  Mrs. Holt was preceded in death by her parents, Dennis and Bonnie Dixon. 

 

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Richard Holt; daughters and sons-in-laws, Jaclyn and Lee Haynes, Rachel and Kliness DeButy; grandson, Holt Haynes; sister, Darlene Dixon; brother and sister-in-law, Danny and Donna Dixon; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Holt will be held Thursday, March 17, 2016, 11:00 AM, at Eastridge Community Church, 863 Highway 142 E., Covington, GA.  As we prepare to honor Deborah's life, please remember her love for life and giving to others.  In lieu of flowers, please consider potted plants or performing two acts of service that would honor this spirit.

 

James Edward Butler, Sr.

James Edward Butler, Sr. of Covington passed away on 13 March 2016 at the age of 92 – five months after the passing of his beloved wife of 68 years, Patti Jo Forlines Butler. 

 

Survivors include his brother Walter Harold Butler and sister-in-law Frances Brady Butler of Snellville; cousin and lifelong friend Sam Higginbotham of Cumming; children and their spouses Dee Ann and Howard R. Brandon, Jr. of Madison, James E. Butler, Jr. of Columbus, Dennis Walter and Judi Copas Butler of Columbus, and Laura Jo Butler of Starrsville; grandchildren and spouses Jennis Brandon Watson (Scott), Howard R. Brandon, III (Jen), James E. ("Jeb") Butler III (Anne), Emily Butler Patteson (Justin), Catherine Butler, Stewart Butler, and Matthew Butler; great-grandchildren Evie Brandon and Avi Watson; and many friends and other relatives. 

 

Mr. Butler was preceded in death by his wife Pat Butler and his parents Walter Herman Butler and Laura Johnson Butler of Starrsville. 

 

Mr. Butler was born December 27, 1923 in Atlanta and graduated from Boys High. He enlisted in the United States Navy on Sept. 1, 1942, and served in the Pacific during WW II as a Naval Aviator.  He was honorably discharged in 1946 but was recalled to active duty on Feb. 1, 1951 during the Korean Conflict.   He served in the Navy Reserve until 1956 when, with four young children at home, he decided it was time to quit flying.  Lt. Commander Butler was a carrier fighter pilot who flew F6F Hellcats and F4U Corsairs. 

 

Mr. Butler was a graduate of Southern Technical Institute and had a long career as a mechanical engineer in Atlanta.  He lived in Dekalb County, Forsyth County, and then nearing retirement returned to Newton County where his family has lived for eight generations.  He could build anything, fix anything, grow anything.   He was a dedicated outdoorsman.  He loved family, hunting, fishing, square dancing with Pat and friends, woodworking, and gardening, and was for years a volunteer at Newton General Hospital.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Butler will be held Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at 2 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, one hour prior to the service, from 12:45 – 1:45 PM.

 

The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staffs of Merryvale Assisted Living in Oxford GA and Atlanta Hospice for their kindness and help.   Those who wish to make a contribution in honor of Mr. Butler may do so to the First Baptist Church of Covington Building Fund, 1139 Usher Street, Covington GA 30014.

Bennie Bruce obit

Bennie L. Bruce of Covington passed away Thursday, March 10, 2016, at the age of 88. Mrs. Bruce was of the Methodist faith, and she enjoyed going to church. She liked traveling, going to the beach and working in her yard. Mrs. Bruce cherished the time spent with family. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Preceding her in death were her parents, Benjamin and Berta Davis.

 

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Jeannie Bruce, Mark and Marie Bruce all of Covington; grandson and his wife, Major Todd and Tracy Bruce of Fort Benning; great-granddaughters, Kati Bruce, Alli Bruce; sister, Rachel Folds of Social Circle.

Murray Hanna

Murray Kain Hanna was born on December 28, 1923 in Harbor Springs, Michigan the son of the late Wilma and Elmer Hanna.  Growing up in Harbor Springs he enjoyed the exploring the north woods and adventuring in his canoe in the area around Little Travers Bay where he developed an inquisitive mind and a love of nature.  He was a natural athlete, champion speed skater and was recruited to play football at Alma College where he went as an undergraduate and is a two time inductee to the Alma Athletic Department Hall of Fame.  During the time at Alma College his studies were interrupted when he joined the Army Air Corps during WWII.  Upon returning to Alma to finish school he met his future wife Elizabeth Jane Harrod and was married in 1947. He continued his graduate studies in entomology at Michigan State University.  He worked for the State of Michigan Department of Agriculture as a respected Entomologist and Plant Pathologist from 1951 until his retirement in 1986.  He continued to study insects and write papers on entomological topics until the last paper he coauthored was finished in 2013. He passed away peacefully on March 10, 2016.  He is survived by his daughter Linda Jane Hanna of Covington, GA, his son Thomas Murray Hanna of Durango, CO and his Grandson Robin Murray Horton and Granddaughter-in-law Noreen Barber of Oxford, GA and many nieces and nephews living around the country. A private family service will be held later this summer. If you wish to honor Murray in lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Little Traverse Conservancy, Harbor Springs, MI in his memory.

Brittaney Aleis Burnett

Brittaney Aleis Burnett of Covington, passed away March 5, 2016, at the age of 28.  Because of her love for children, Brittaney worked as a nanny.  She also enjoyed helping young women.  Brittaney was a devout Christian with a zest for life and an infectious loving personality.  She was highly esteemed and adored by globally and was crowned Native American Princess.  She attended Church of the Harvest Fayette. Brittaney was preceded in death by her grandfather, Leon H. Mallory, Sr.; great-grandmother, Lucy Pearl Rippy; and her uncle, Leon H. Mallory, Jr.

 

Survivors include her mother, Loretta L. Mallory; father, Benito Natividad, Jr.; sisters, Rachel Natividad, Benita Natividad, Danielle McKenzie, Jadah Mallory, Selah Mallory; brothers, Mark Burnett, Blake Mallory, Benito Natividad, III,  Benito Natividad-Stallings; grandmother, Rita Mallory; grandfather, Robert J. Betty Ann Burch Madden

Betty Ann Burch Madden of Covington, passed away March 7, 2016, at the age of 88.  Mrs. Madden retired from AT&T, formerly Southern Bell Telephone Company, and was a life-long, very active member of Porterdale Baptist Church.  She enjoyed cross stitching and loved to sing especially with the Covington Choral Guild.  In her latter days, when relatives came to visit, singing together always lifted her spirits.  Mrs. Madden was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Claude I. Madden; parents, William A. Burch and Cora Lee (Norwood) Burch Greene; and brothers, John B. Burch, William H. Burch.

 

Survivors include her nieces and their husbands, Tullye Ralph, Carol and Rev. Don Turner, Glee Bradley, Ann and J.P. Whitley, Brenda Waldrop, Lura and Glenn Whitaker, Nelda and Leon Brownlee; nephew, Johnny Burch and his wife, Debra; and brother, Andrew Burch.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Madden will be held Friday, March 11, 2016, 2:30 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Don Turner officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  Friends may join the family for visitation prior to the service on Friday, from 1:00 – 2:30 PM.  Flowers are accepted or those desiring to do so may make contributions to Porterdale Baptist Church General Fund, P.O. Box 637, Porterdale, GA  30070.

Tommy Queen

Tommy Wilson Queen, Sr., of Mansfield passed away March 2, 2016, at the age of 49. Tommy was an amazing father and always very supportive. He cherished the time spent with his grandchildren, and he adored his bull mastiff "Sasha". Tommy liked to go fishing, hunting and playing in horseshoe tournaments. In addition, he enjoyed being outside, and was a Georgia Bulldog Fan. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Preceding him in death was his father, Billy Joe Queen, Sr.

 

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Sonja C. Queen, daughter, Tiffani Queen of Mansfield; son and daughter-in-law, Tommy, Jr., and Tara Queen of Covington; mother, Kathleen Fambrough of Covington; grandchildren, Brantley Queen of South Carolina, Remi Queen, Izzabella McDonald both of Covington; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Rick Beasley of Newborn; brothers and sister-in-law, Billy Joe Queen, Jr., of Covington, Michael and Brandy Queen of Griffin; one niece and three nephews.

 

A Memorial Visitation for Mr. Queen will be held Tuesday, March 8, 2016, from 4:00 – 6:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street in Covington.

Julia Mitchell of Covington passed away March 3, 2016, at the age of 76. Mrs. Mitchell was a member of Snapping Shoals United Methodist Church, she loved helping people and never met a stranger. She enjoyed spending time with her sister, traveling and going to the beach. In addition, she liked being outside working in her garden. Mrs. Mitchell cherished the time spent with family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jimmy and Jessie Mae Garrett; brothers, Jerry Garrett, Billy Garrett and Ben Garrett. 

 

Survivors include her daughter, Barbara Hunt of Destin, FL; sons and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Rose Mitchell of Covington, Steve Mitchell of Destin, FL; grandson, Lewis Hunt of Covington; great-grandchildren, Shelby Hunt, Faith Hunt, Grayson Hunt, Harley Hunt; sister, Betty Anderson of Covington.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Mitchell will be held Saturday, March 5, 2016, 2:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road in Covington, with Pastor Ronnie Compton officiating and interment following in Snapping Shoals United Methodist Cemetery. Friends may join the family for visitation at the funeral home Friday, March 4, from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM.
