Edited Obit for James P. Turner with correct visitation times

James P. Turner, of Covington, died Tuesday, August 30, 2016, at the age of 76. Mr. Turner was graduate of The University of Georgia, earning his Masters in Rehabilative Counseling. After devoting over 30 years to the state of Georgia, he retired as the Director of the Business Enterprise Division. Mr. Turner grew up in Mineral Bluff, GA. He was faithful to the Lord, serving his church, as a deacon and elder in the PCA, for over 50 years. Mr.Turner was a very kind, patient and loving husband and grandfather and great-grandfather, who loved spending time with his family, watching over his grandchildren and great grandchildren playing games.  In his spare time, he could be found spending time at the beach and the mountains. Eating and reading were two of his other favorite pastimes. Mr. Turner was a devoted husband to his wife, Mary, and took great pleasure in their life together and all that they had accomplished. The couple spent time traveling and attending family functions, which included family and school reunions. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Maudie Lee Turner and Reverend Loran Parks Turner; daughter, Mary Lisa Turner; sister, Ruth Turner Abercrombie; and brother, Ronald William Turner.

 

Survivors include his wife, Mary Barton Turner, Covington, GA.; daughter and son-in- law, Kelly and Dan  Dalton, Berkeley Lake GA.; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Jeff and Lorry Turner, Roopville GA; granddaughters, Sabrina Stanley and her husband, Richard,  MaryLeith Martin Turner, Arden Grace Turner; grandsons Richard Louis Brown, Jedidiah Parks Turner, Zebulun DeFore Turner; great-granddaughters, Madison Kelly Marie Brown, Emma Kate Stanley, Elaina Grace Stanley; several nieces and nephews.

 

A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 2nd, 2016 at 11:00 AM, at Trinity Presbyterian Church Highway 278 in Covington, Georgia, with Pastor Rob Rienstra officiating.  A graveside service will be held in JP Chastain Memorial Park, Blue Ridge, GA, September 3, 2016 at 1:00 PM.  The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 1, 2016, 6:00 – 8:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington.

Ozena Rodman

Ozena Rodman of Porterdale, passed away August 31, 2016, at 89 years of age.  Mrs. Rodman retired from the Osprey Mill at Bibb Manufacturing Co. and then began a new career at Riverside Nursing Home, where she worked for 16 years before retiring.  She was a very active member of Voice of Pentecost Church in Covington. Mrs. Rodman was preceded in death by her son, Johnny Rodman; parents, Howard Lewis and Frett (Butler) Long; sister, Doris Stevens, Leavie Newkirk; brother, Donald Long.

 

Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Carla Rodman, David Rodman; grandchildren, Hailey Rodman, Matt Rodman, one great-grandson; sister, Alice Harrison of Social Circle; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Rodman will be held Friday, September 2, 2016, 11:00 AM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd St.,  Covington, with Pastor Gavin Moon officiating.  Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  Friends may visit with the family Friday one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 – 11:00 AM.

Nancy Carolyn Watson

Nancy Carolyn Watson of Covington, passed away August 29, 2016, at 76 years of age.  Mrs. Watson retired from Marshalls Distribution Center after 19 years of service.  A member of Grace Baptist Church, she treasured the time she spent fishing with her late husband.  She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  Mrs. Watson was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Watson; great-granddaughter, Sophia Mendoza; parents, Arthur "Bill" and Katie (Hillard) Crowe; sister, Frances Mote; and brother, Bud Crowe.

 

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Nona and Wayne Stapp of Social Circle, Cathy and Jimmy Parker of Covington; grandchildren, James Parker, Kimberly (Dale) Rigdon, Tabitha Stapp, Courtney (Manuel) Mendoza; great-grandchildren, Cyprus Salers, Adelyn Mendoza, Jayden Mendoza, Nathan Parker-Garner; and brother, Artis Crowe of Jackson.

Obit - Paul M. Ward

Paul M. Ward of Oxford, passed away August 28, 2016, at the age of 88.  Born to the late Rev. Samuel I. and Martha (Smith) Ward in Carlton, KS, Mr. Ward was converted and became a Christian in revival services in 1943.  After graduating from John Brown Academy in Siloam Springs, AK, in 1945, and Sterling College in Sterling, KS, in 1949, he was inducted into the Army in 1950, and proudly served his country in both Japan and Korea.  Mr. Ward studied at Faith Theological Seminary in Elkins Park, PA, graduating in 1956, and served in two churches of the Reformed Presbyterian Church (presently the Presbyterian Church of America).  He married Mary Elizabeth Leatherman of Toledo, OH, and to this union was born one son, Stephen Paul, who preceded him in death in 2001.  Mr. Ward was also a chemist and worked for more than 25 years for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in Kansas City, Boston and Atlanta.  Even though he had to give up the ministry due to deafness, he preached in churches whenever the opportunity was presented.  He was preceded in death by Mary, his wife of 55 years; son, Stephen; parents; sister, Alice Shoop; half-sister, Hazel Hamus; and brothers, Harold Ward and Samuel Ward.

 

Survivors include his grandson and his wife, Daniel and Stephanie Ward of Oxford; great-grandson, Ethan Ward; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Amber Ward of Hutchinson, KS; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mr. Ward will be held Wednesday, August 31, 2016, 11 AM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, with Rev. Tanner Cline officiating and interment following in New Covington Cemetery with Military Honors.  Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home, two hours prior to the service, from 9:00 – 11:00 AM.

Jack Lazenby of Covington, passed away August 26, 2016, at the age of 75. Mr. Lazenby attended Harvest Baptist Church. He retired from Air Conditioning Specialists after 37 years of service. Mr. Lazenby, armed with a remarkable sense of humor, was known to be quite the kidder. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and greatgrandfather, who could be found camping and fishing in his spare time. Mr. Lazenby will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Debra Elaine Lazenby; parents Hubert Melvin and Emma Ruth (Johnson) Lazenby; sisters, Judy Martin, Anita Cantwell; and brother, Pat Lazenby.

Jessie Coe of Covington, passed away August 25, 2016, at the age of 74. He was owner and operator of JC Trucking Company for over 40 years. Mr. Coe was a member of County Line Baptist Church, and followed through with the believer's baptism three years ago. He was also a member of the Agape Sunday School Class. Mr. Coe could be found working on antique cars, a hobby he enjoyed doing with his son, Steve. He also loved flower gardening and spent time traveling - one of his favorite destinations being the mountains. Preceding him in death were his parents, Irvin and Mary Emma (Clay) Coe; along with seven siblings.

 

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Dave Makely of Loganville; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Donna Coe of Mansfield; granddaughters, Amy Robison;, Kaitlyn Coe, Janna Coe; sister, Lillie Strickland; brothers, J.P. Chase Brendel of Stockbridge, passed away August 24, 2016, at the age of 17. Chase loved his family and cherished the time he spent with his girlfriend, Tasia. He enjoyed playing video games and riding 4-wheelers and his motorcycle. Chase had a passion for car restoration, loved muscle cars, and always wanted to be a mechanic. Having a close bond with his father, they enjoyed working together and especially enjoyed going out for sushi! He was a friend to many, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

David Scott Fliss of Social Circle, passed away August 18, 2016, at the age of 56. David was a proud veteran of the United States Navy. He was a dedicated employee of Kroger, located on Highway 278, for 10 years, and enjoyed woodworking and collecting knives. David was a jovial man, with a good sense of humor, who will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, Dave and Hattie (Wolfe) Flis.

Sherlan Wilson of Covington passed away August 17, 2016, at the age of 74. She was a founding member of Harvest Baptist Church, with services originating in her home.  She enjoyed antiquing, singing, crafting, sewing, and traveling, with one of her favorite destinations being Daytona Beach. Mrs. Wilson loved her family and cherished the time spent with her grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her father, Albert Hawkins; and brother, Gary (Buddy) Hawkins.

Robert Findlay obit

 

Robert "Mike" Findlay of Covington, passed away August 17, 2016, at the age of 62. He was married to the love of his life, Judy, for forty years. Robert was a Godly man, who loved the Lord, and was known to be a man of his word. Not one to meet a stranger, he quickly earned the nickname, "Friendly Findlay", in high school. Robert loved spending time with his family and could oftentimes be found camping and going to the lake. He was an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs. Preceding him in death were his parents, Charles and Katherine Findlay.

 

Survivors include his wife, Judy Findlay; daughter, Beth Findlay, both of Covington; daughter and son-in-law,  Laura Ann and Michael  May of  Oxford; granddaughter, Jaden May of Loganville; honorary grandchildren, Ava and Ashton Draper; sisters, Elizabeth Scott Stewart of Waycross; Jane Barber of Covington; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Ben Masdon

Ben Masdon of Covington, passed away August 13, 2016, at the age of 82. "Ben the Barber on the Square", as he was affectionately known, was a master barber and operated his own shop for 25 years. Prior to moving to Covington, in 1969, he was a resident of DeKalb County. He was a faithful member of Lovejoy United Methodist Church, in Covington, and the Golden Fleece Masonic Lodge #6. Mr. Masdon was just recently presented with his 50 year Masonic Award. He was a 2nd Class Petty Officer in the United States Navy. Mr. Masdon proudly served four years on the USS Duncan stationed out of San Diego, CA, and was actively involved in tracking missiles. His service was so remarkable, his Commanding Officer offered to endorse him for an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. Mr. Masdon was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Irene (Vaughn) Masdon.

Cynthia Lorraine Douglas of Social Circle, passed away August 12, 2016, at the age of 62. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Tate; and her parents, Luther Lee and Norma (Walker) Stewart.

Obit Coralou Nichols


Coralou Nichols of Covington, died August 11, 2016, at the age of 82. Mrs. Nichols enjoyed camping, shopping, gardening, collecting trinkets and dining out. Additionally, she liked vacationing in Florida. Mrs. Nichols was a fun-loving, joyful lady who loved her family dearly and especially cherished the time spent with her grandchildren. Together, they enjoyed playing board games. She was preceded in death by her son, Terry Lynn Nichols; granddaughter, Jennifer Smith and her husband, Steven; great-granddaughter, Kirsten Smith; and her parents, Harold and Nola Harner.

 

Survivors include her devoted husband of 65 years, Joe Nichols; daughters, Carol McCluskey of Lilburn, Debbie Connell of Conyers; grandchildren, Jason McCluskey (Zandra), Kelley Harrelson (Wade), Michael Nichols; great-grandchildren, Makayla Smith, Jordan McCluskey, Jacob McCluskey, Avery Harrelson, Leah Harrelson; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Timothy C. "Tim" Carter

Timothy C. "Tim" Carter of Conyers passed away August 6, 2016 at 59 years of age.  Tim was employed as a journeyman wireman by IBEW Local Union 613 for 38 years.  A loving husband, father and grandfather, he was a true family man.  His grandchildren were his hobby!  Tim was preceded in death by his daughter, Kimberly Carter; parents, Henry Cye and Mary Joyce (Baker) Carter.

 

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Susan Carter; son and daughter-in-law, Landon and Amy Carter of Oxford; grandchildren, Brandon Carter-McCool, Jacob Ryan McCool, Alayna Susan Carter, Landon Michael Carter; sister, Nita Combel of Atlanta; mother-in-law, Goldie J. Emerson of Oxford; brothers-in-law, Michael D. Emerson of Stockbridge, Marcus D. Emerson of Covington; five nieces and four nephews; as well as extended family, brothers and sisters of IBEW Local Union 613.

Sandra Krueger

Sandy Krueger, 50, of Covington, passed away August 7, 2016. Before her illness, Sandy worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant, caring for others as she always did. Even throughout her residency at Manor House, she enjoyed talking to and assisting the elderly residents, when possible. Sandy was a selfless woman, devoted friend and loved her family dearly. She will surely be missed by all who knew her.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Rosalee and Richard Knight of NE; grandchildren, Haylie Knight, Jonathan Knight; parents, John and Martha Krueger of Covington; sister and brother-in-law, Danielle and Chris Williams of Greensboro; brother and sister-in-law, Scott and Kathy Krueger of Covington; niece, Marisa Williams; nephews, Matthew Krueger and Zander Williams.

 

Funeral Services for Sandy will be held Wednesday, August 10, 2016, 11:00 AM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Martha Krueger officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, one hour prior to her service, from 10:00 – 11:00 AM. Gene Bruce

Gene Bruce of Greensboro, passed away August 5, 2016, at 77 years of age.  Owner and operator of Southeastern Sitecast Co. for 25 years, Mr. Bruce proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy.   He attended Grace Fellowship in Greensboro and enjoyed the time he spent hunting and fishing.  Mr. Bruce will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, James William and Winifred (Saxon) Bruce; and eleven siblings.

 

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Bruce of Greensboro; daughter, Jelene Manders, also of Greensboro; son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Shelly Maughon of Eatonton; grandchildren, Amanda and Rex Stroup, Jacob Manders, Melissa Maughon, Michael Maughon; great-grandchildren, James William Stroup, John Max Wilson, Elijah Marchman; sisters, Jackie Sheriff, Jan Mitchell, both of Conyers; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Charlen Crenshaw

Charlen Miles Crenshaw, age 91, passed away August 4, 2016.  Born July 16, 1925, to Howard Miles and Frances Daniel Miles, she was a 1943 graduate of Girl's High School in Atlanta, Georgia. She worked as a model in Atlanta throughout the 1940s and 1950s, and later worked in Executive Reservations for Delta Airlines.

Charlen grew up at All Saints Episcopal Church in Atlanta, but later attended First Baptist Church of Covington, where she was a dedicated member of the church choir. She was also a founding member of the Covington-Conyers Choral Guild, with which she sang for 22 years. Charlen was a former president of the Service Guild, and she also coordinated the 1970 Census in Newton County.

An avid card player, Charlen was in seven bridge clubs. She loved travelling and shopping, especially when she was able to travel and shop with her loved ones.  She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Mary Helen Miles Lane and Frances Jane Miles Priest. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Crenshaw; son Rick Deemer and his wife, Mary; son Rob Deemer and his wife, Nancy; son David Deemer and his wife, Patti; daughter Cathy Crenshaw Laseter; 9 grandchildren: Michele Deemer; Paige Deemer Caras and her husband, Mike; Gray Deemer and his wife, Amberly; Barclay Deemer Allen; Kelly Davidson Duvall and her husband, Jerry; Waites Laseter and his wife, Brittany; Helen Laseter and her fiancé, Scott Smith; Julianna Laseter; Catherine Laseter; and 8 great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service for Charlen will be held Monday, August 8, 2016, 11:00 AM, at All Saints' Episcopal Church, 634 W. Peachtree St., NW, in Atlanta.  Friends may join the family for visitation at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, Sunday, August 7, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.

Obit - William Thomas "Bill" Hailey

William Thomas (Bill) Hailey, 85, of Rutledge, passed away August 2, 2016. Mr. Hailey retired from General Motors and was a faithful member of Willow Springs Baptist Church. He never met a stranger and enjoyed striking up friendly conversations with everyone he met. His love for travel allowed him to visit places all over the world – including Germany and France. Mr. Hailey adored his family and cherished the time he spent with them. He was preceded in death by his son, Tim Hailey; grandson, T.J. Hailey; parents, Aquilla and Ella Ruth Hailey; sisters, Sara Bone, Jane Turner; and his brothers, Charles Hailey, Perry Hailey and Luther Hailey.

Obit - Mary King

Mary King of Monticello, passed away August 1, 2016, at the age of 80. A devout Christian lady, Mrs. King cherished her Bible and faithfully attended church when able. She had a servant's heart, never met a stranger and was always willing to help anyone in need. When she was younger, Mrs. King enjoyed camping and fishing. She adored her family, treasured the time she spent with them and enjoyed cooking for them. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
