Obit - Joseph Tom "J.T." Bohannon

Joseph Tom "J.T." Bohannon, of Covington, passed away October 30, 2016, at 84 years of age.  A Newton County native and a lifetime member of High Point Baptist Church, Mr. Bohannon loved plants and gardening.  He had a beautifully landscaped yard and made sure his plants were being cared for even if he was unable to do it himself.  He enjoyed spending time outside, visiting flea markets and yard sales, and shopping at Ramsey's Produce Stand when his home-grown tomatoes were unavailable.  Mr. Bohannon loved classic cars, was an avid Coca-Cola collector and enjoyed his Beech-Nut chewing tobacco.  He never met a stranger and had a friendly word for everyone he met.  Mr. Bohannon cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren - especially when they were babies.  Preceding him in death were his parents, Tom and Ethel (Kitchens) Bohannon; son-in-law, Jody Lynch; as well as numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 66 years, Sarah Bohannon of Covington; daughters and son-in-law, Pam and David Cothran, Denise Lynch; grandchildren, Rick and Marsha Smith, Robin and Chad Gilbert, Matthew Edge, Mark and Ciara Edge, Jodi and Nathan Morgan; step-grandchildren, Cory, Dave, Holly; 14 great-grandchildren; many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

A Funeral Service for Mr. Bohannon will be held Wednesday, November 2, 2016, 11:00 AM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington.  Interment will follow in High Point Baptist Cemetery, 12025 GA Highway 36, Covington.  Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home, Tuesday, November 1, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM.

Charlie Childs

Charlie Childs of Oxford passed away October 29, 2016 at 72 years of age.  Born and raised in Porterdale, Charlie was an outstanding football player with the Newton County High School Rams in 1960 – 1961.  He enjoyed coaching PeeWee Football teams, hunting, fishing, golfing, and loved the Georgia Bulldogs.   Charlie retired from Dekalb County School System.  He was a very private person and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.  Preceding Charlie in death were his parents, Arthur (Snooks) and Mary Lou Childs; brother, Jack Childs; and brother-in-law, Phil Peters.

 

Survivors include his sisters and brother-in-law, Judy and Tim Hopkins of Monroe, Dotty Childs of Porterdale; and nephews, Pete, Wes, and Joey Peters; niece, DeeAWeber; great-nieces and great-nephew, Emma, Zelda, Tallulah, Maddie Mae, Georgia, Haylee, and Tripp.

 

A Memorial Service for Charlie will be held Tuesday, November 1, 2016, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, with Pete Peters, Joey Peters, and Wes Peters officiating.  Interment will follow at a later date in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  Friends may visit with the family two hours prior to the service on Tuesday, from 12:00 Noon – 2:00 P.M.

Janet Marie Jones of Covington, passed away at the age of 53. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Fambrough and Dixie Larue (Duncan) Jones; son, Keith Cook; brother, Trammel Dwight Jones.

 

Survivors include her children, Timothy Jones, Kayleigh Dahman, both of Covington, Johnathan Dahman, of San Diego, CA ; sisters and brothers-in-law, Cammie and Bobby Parker of Covington, Debbie Johnson of Porterdale, Sharon and Jeff Morgan of Oxford; brothers and sister-in-law, William M. and Deborah Jones, John Terry Jones, all of Covington; numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Sue Ingram of Loganville, passed away October 25, 2016, at the age of 74. Mrs. Ingram worked for 26 years as a school bus driver with the Newton County School System. In her spare time, she took pleasure in playing the piano and cooking. Mrs. Ingram was of the Baptist faith. Preceding her in death were her parents, James Collyan and Madell (Burgess) Smith.

 

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Olin Ingram; daughters, Regina Ingram, Jennifer Ingram, both of Loganville; son and daughter-in-law, James and Missy Ingram of Grayson; grandchildren, Erica Oglesby, Cory Oglesby, Gracie Ingram; great-grandson, Aiden Oglesby.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Ingram will be held Friday, October 28, 2016, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, Covington, with Pastor Mike Hardy and Pastor Eugene Burgess officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Mary Ella Bruce

Mary Ella Bruce of Covington passed away October 24, 2016, at 79 years of age.   A 1954 graduate of Newton County High School, Mrs. Bruce served as Branch Manager for Bank of America for more than 30 years, and was a lifetime member of Calvary Baptist Church.  She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, gardening, coloring in adult coloring books, and was known for the delicious food she prepared.  Mrs. Bruce cherished the time she spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.  Preceding her in death were her parents, Dennis Alexander and Flora Mae (Sammons) Smith.

 

Survivors include her loving husband of 60 years, George Bruce of Covington; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Lynn and Edward Bailey of Villa Rica, Tracy and Eddie Millington of Covington; son and daughter-in-law, Buddy and Linda Bruce also of Covington; 7 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Karlean Hester of Powder Springs, Jean Brizzi of Covington; brother and sister-in-law, David Mike and Sue Smith of Covington; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Steve Jeffries

Steve Jeffries of Covington passed away October 23, 2016, at 62 years of age.  A Newton County native, and a 1971 graduate of Newton County High School, Steve was a member of Cornish Mountain Baptist Church. He worked at Kroger in Covington for more than 25 years.  Steve was a musician, playing with several bands, mainly Steele Road Band.  He loved to play string instruments, but primarily lead guitar.  Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Pat and Lois (Lynch) Jeffries.

 

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Pam Jeffries of Covington; son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Tara Jeffries of Social Circle; grandchildren, Bradley Caron, Morgan Jeffries; sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Jonas Smith of Leesburg, FL; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. 

 

A Funeral Service for Steve will be held Wednesday, October 26, 2016, 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, with Pastor Gerald Stowe, Pastor Phil Payton, Pastor Chad Caldwell officiating.  Serving as pallbearers are members of Steele Road Band, Mike Rogers, Andrew Senn, Danny Ewing, Pastor Phil Payton, Wayne Aldridge, Joey Cordell, and Tex Evans.  Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home two hours prior to the service, from 1:00 – 3:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to Newton County Humane Society, P.O. Larry (Buddy) Denton of Covington, passed away October 20, 2016, at 57 years of age.  Mr. Denton was preceded in death by his parents, Larry Doyle and Betty (Beard) Denton.  Survivors include his daughter, Monica Morrow of Houston, TX; son, Larry R. Denton, Jr. of Chatsworth, GA; several grandchildren; sisters, Joy Denton Ethridge, Gloria Jean Gilmer, Carol Cook, Noel Keller; brother, Joe Herman; as well as nieces and nephews.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Denton will be held at a later date.

Wade C. Morgan of Covington, passed away October 23, 2016, at the age of 60. Mr. Wade worked for 32 years with Atlanta Gas Light, as well as working part-time, with his brother, at Morgan Painting, for 15 years. He shared his love of guitar with Victory Tabernacle's praise band as a lead guitarist for over 10 years. Mr. Wade was also a member of Victory Community Church. Being an avid sports fan, he enjoyed NASCAR racing, and watching both the Falcons and the Georgia Bulldogs play football. Preceding him in death were his parents, Bryan Edwin and Florence Helen Morgan.

 

Survivors include his wife, Rebecca; son, Brandon Morgan, both of Covington; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Lee Johnston, and Vera Gault, all of Conyers; brother and sister-in-law, Joel and Vicki Morgan; numerous nieces and nephews.

Lola M. Farrar

Lola M. Farrar of Conyers passed away October 17, 2016, at 79 years of age.  Affectionately known as "Granny", Mrs. Farrar enjoyed taking care of children, even to the second generation. She enjoyed working in her beautiful flower garden.  In addition, Mrs. Farrar cherished the time she spent traveling with her husband having been on 15 cruises together, including Alaska and the Panama Canal.  Her most treasured hobby was loving her family.  Mrs. Farrar will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Preceding her in death were her parents, Claude and Elnor (Callaham) Taylor; brothers, Bobby Taylor, James Taylor, George Taylor; sisters, Montez Gray, Leola Taylor, Doris Black.

 

Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Donald Farrar of Conyers; daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Jay Darwin of Covington; son Ronnie Farrar of McDonough; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Wanda Taylor of Roswell; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Joshua Figge

Joshua Figge of McDonough passed away October 15, 2016, at 31 years of age.  Joshua enjoyed working on cars, and because of his love for being outside, he cherished the time he spent fishing.  He will be remembered as a very kind-hearted man who will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.  Joshua was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Mary Ann Bradley and Marvin Myers; nephew, Skylor Whisenhunt.

 

Survivors include his daughter, Isabella Figge of Covington; parents, Robin and Kenneth Hubbard of Toccoa, David and Regina Figge of Covington; sisters, Christina Whisenhunt of McDonough, Rebecca Mills of Toccoa; brother, Matthew Figge of Covington; paternal grandparents, Eugene and Patricia Figge of Covington; nephew, Daniel; and nieces, Stella and Genavieve.

Loretta Sharp Gladden

Loretta Sharp Gladden passed away peacefully at her home on October 11, 2016, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.  She was born November 11, 1935, in Ephrata, PA.  Lorrie attended University of Pennsylvania and Duke University and worked for many years as a registered nurse in the Atlanta and Covington areas.  She was an active member of The Church of the Good Shepherd in Covington.  In addition, Lorrie was a member of many Newton County community and historical organizations throughout the years.  She enjoyed spending time at the beach, quilting, and was loved by a wide circle of friends.   Lorrie was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Gladden; as well as her parents, Richard and Elva Sharp. 

 

Survivors include her children, Karen Talmage, Marty and Lynda Loden, Julie and John Fitchett, of both Atlanta, GA and Denver CO.  She is also survived by eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and her brother, Mike Sharp of Philadelphia, PA.

 

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 15, 2016, 11:00 AM, at The Church of the Good Shepherd, 4140 Clark Street, in Covington.  In remembrance of Lorrie, donations may be made to The Church of the Good Shepherd, 4140 Clark Street, Covington, GA  30014.

obit for Mildred Hutchison St.Clair

Mildred Hutchison St.Clair of Covington, passed away October 9, 2016, at the age of 82. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mrs. St.Clair's children's spouses became like her own. She began her career with AT&T in Richmond, VA, as a secretary and retired as a troubleshooter technician after 38 years of service. Mrs. St. Clair was a servant of the churches she attended no matter where she called home.  Mrs. St.Clair was passionate about music, especially gospel, and enjoyed playing the piano and organ and singing.  She was the oldest of eight siblings, loving each of them dearly. Mrs. St.Clair fought a valiant fight against breast cancer for 27 months, never complaining. Her strong faith in God meant she didn't fear the future. Mrs. St.Clair was preceded in death by her mother and father, Dorothy and Luster Hutchison; grandson, Seth St.Clair.

 

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Roger G. St.Clair; daughter and son-in-law, Mitzi and Charles E. Emily S. Betts

Emily S. Betts of Covington passed away October 2, 2016, at 92 years of age.  Emily exemplified the attributes of being a member of "the greatest generation."  She was a devoted mother, even while maintaining a demanding career.  The love and care of her family was utmost in her heart and mind.  Emily was a voracious reader, loved art, was an excellent seamstress and upholsterer.  She was gifted in making floral arrangements.  It brought her great joy to share these talents with others.  She was an avid Braves fan and supported them, win or lose.  When they were playing she could be found in her chair wearing her Braves cap and cheering them on.

 

Emily loved the Lord Jesus Christ and served in many capacities while a member of Gaithers United Methodist Church.  She shared her love of the Lord with everyone she met.  Preceding her in death were her husband, Hallie E. Betts; daughter, Laurie LaVerne Betts; grandson, Jason Betts; brothers, Daniel Shaw, Danny C. Shaw; and son-in-law, Paul Montgomery.

 

Survivors include daughter, Sherrye Montgomery of Whitehouse, TX; son and daughter-in-law, Ernest (Butch) and Linda Betts of Covington; grandchildren, Carl and Lois Montgomery of Gladewater, TX, Paul and Hadley Montgomery of Whitehouse, TX, Andrea and David Adams of Grandbury, Tx; Shannon and Shelly Betts, Ryan and Amber Betts, all of Covington; great-grandchildren, Amanda Adams, Olivia Montgomery, Wesley Adams, Abigail Betts, Alyssa Betts, Jackson Betts, Jacob Betts, Sydney Montgomery, Walker Montgomery; sister, Jareita Settle; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Betts will be held Saturday, October 8, 2016, 2:00 PM at the Chapel of Caldwell and Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, with Rev. Jerry Rylee and Andy Parker officiating.  Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  Friends may visit with the family Friday, October 7, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM.  Flowers are accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Gaiters United Methodist Church, 1375 Newton Factory Bridge Road, Covington, GA  30014. 

 

The family would like to thank Longleaf Hospice and Merryvale Assisted Living for their assistance while Emily's health was declining.  Your care and kindness was more than gracious.  It is our hope that we as a family can continue to demonstrate the power of love she so graciously gave.

obit for Hilliard

Ralph Hilliard, Sr., of Oxford passed away October 1, 2016, at the age of 79. Mr. Hilliard was married to the love of his life, Mary Frances, for 60 years. He devoted his life to church and family. Mr. Hilliard had a passion for music and loved playing musical instruments. Additionally, he was an avid fisherman, and especially enjoyed fishing in Florida. He was friendly and enjoyed making conversation with everyone he met. Preceding him in death were his parents, Rayford and Evie Mae Hilliard; and son, Daniel Hilliard.

 

Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances Hilliard; daughters and sons-in-law, Rachel and Thomas Taylor, of Monroe, Mary Baumeister, Joy Hilliard, both of Oxford, Violet and Franklin Newkirk Jr., of Shady Dale, Melissa and Jeff Hay of Covington; sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph and Susan Hilliard, Jr., of Loganville, David and Tonya Hilliard of Covington; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret Stevens, Dorothy Johnson, Jewel Brown, Shirley Hall; brother and sister-in-law, Ben and Carolyn Hilliard; numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mr. Hilliard will be held Tuesday, October 4, 2016, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, with Pastor David Payne and Reverend Gavin Moon officiating and interment following in Oxford Historical Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, October 2, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.

Jerry "Red" McDonald of Oxford, passed away October 1, 2016, at the age of 66. Jerry owned his own landscaping company, Jerry Mc Donald Landscaping, for more than 45 years. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, and traveled all over the country filling this passion. If not working, Jerry was in the woods! He cherished his family and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Preceding him in death were his parents, Martin and Ruby (Shaw) McDonald; brother, Reese McDonald; and three infant sisters.

 

Survivors include his wife of 15 years, Janett McDonald; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Renee McDonald; step-son, Brandon Crockett and his wife, Krystal; grandchildren, Travis McDonald, Blake McDonald, Lucy McDonald, Sian Loftin, Mia Loftin, Kaylin Crockett, Corban Crockett, Cambrie Crockett; great-grandchildren, Troy McDonald, Raylen McDonald; sisters and brothers-in-law, Cindy and Larry Griffeth, Eleanor Fleenor, Mildred and David Rogers, Ann and Ray Dickerson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jimmy and Jackie McDonald, Jay and Cathy McDonald, Ricky and Tammy McDonald; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Jerry will be held Monday, October 3, 2016, 1:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Justin Hornesby officiating and interment following in East Lithonia Baptist Church Cemetery, 2221 Jacksonville Road, Lithonia. Friends may visit with Jerry's family at the funeral home, Sunday, October 2, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.
