obit for Mrs. Mary Bell

Mary "Evelyn" Bell of Covington, passed away November 30, 2016, at the age of 79. When Mrs. Bell wasn't playing Phase 10, she enjoyed going to bingo with her husband, Robert, at the American Legion Post 233, in Loganville. Being famous for her sweet tea, a song was written in her honor, "Mrs. Bell's Sweet Tea". She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Fairy (Lokey) Cartledge; sons, Charles Cartledge, James Bell; sisters, Barbara Cook, Polly Rush; brother, Joe Cartledge.

 

Survivors include her husband of 48 years, Robert Bell; daughter and son-in-law, Robyn and Stacey White of Covington; sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Cindy Cartledge of Dalton, GA, Rick and Nora Cartledge of Cleveland, TN, Robby and Christy Bell of Covington; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Betty Cartledge of Covington, James Cartledge, Franklin and Norma Cartledge all of Chester, SC, Roy and Margaret Cartledge, Jackie and Frances Cartledge, all of Covington; numerous nieces and nephews; lifelong friend, Judy Pope.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Bell will be held Sunday, December 4, 2016, 2 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, with Pastor Stan Patterson officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Brandon Cartledge, Cameron Cartledge, Nick White, Scott Rush, Hunter White, Ranon Lane, Carlos Armendariz, Ryan Bell and Rylan Lane will serve as pallbearers. Santa Johnny Hammond

Santa Johnny Hammond of Mansfield, passed away November 27, 2016, at 74 years of age.  After retiring from AT&T, he found his true life calling when he became Santa Johnny.  He brought joy to thousands of children who sat on his lap and whispered their Christmas wish lists in his ear.  He would tell them to mind their parents, brush their teeth, and say their prayers.  Santa Johnny carried in his heart the true meaning of Christmas.  Unfortunately Parkinson's disease ended his Santa career.  He was loved deeply and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

 

Survivors include his wife, Linda Hammond of Mansfield; daughters and son-in-law, Andrea Hammond of Covington, Heather and Stuart Nichols of Hiawassee; grandsons, Hunter and Kolby Moss; two sisters; two brothers; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Memorial Service for Santa Johnny will be held Monday, December 5, 2016, 7:00 PM, at the First United Methodist Church, 1113 Conyers Street, SW, Covington, with Rev. Mike Wadley and Rev. Dr. Douglas Gilreath officiating.  Friends may visit with the family at the church two hours prior to the service, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Foundation, 1687 Tullie Circle, Atlanta, GA  30342.

Roy G. Webb, Jr.

Roy G. Webb, Jr., of Covington passed away November 27, 2016, at 89 years of age.  A member of The Baptist Tabernacle for over 40 years, Mr. Webb loved working at the church and preparing meals for his church family.  He enjoyed sitting on his front porch, cooking, working with his flowers, and traveling to the mountains with his wife Bernice.  Mr. Webb cherished the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Bernice Webb; daughter, Teresa McCullers; grandson, Shane McCullers; parents, Roy J., Sr., and Lillie Mae Webb; brother, Robert Eddie Webb; and brother-in-law, Harvey C. Smith.

 

Survivors include his granddaughter Shara Greer and her husband Judson of Covington; great-grandchildren, Sydni and Kyli Greer; sister, Betty J. Smith; all of Covington; niece, Debbie Steele; great-niece, Shantay Quillen; and son-in-law, Harvey L. McCullers also of Covington.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Webb will be held Wednesday, November 30, 2016, 4:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, with Dr. David R. Moody officiating.  Friends may visit with the family two hours prior to the service, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM.

Annie S. Lawless of Covington, passed away November 26, 2016, at the age of 92. Mrs. Lawless worked at Oxford Industrial for 40 years. She spent six years as a greeter for Wal-Mart before finishing her working career with the Social Security Office. Mrs. Lawless was a member of Honey Creek Baptist Church since 1978. She dedicated her life to her family, and was also passionate about cooking and baking. Mrs. Lawless was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Elizabeth (Barker) Kirkus; husband of 25 years, Rev. Charles R. Lawless; sister, Mary K. Penn; brother, Sam Kirkus, Jr., "Buddy"; nieces, Mary Iris Allen, Marsha Johnson, Linda Penn Maughon; nephew, Michael Kirkus.

 

Surviving Mrs. Lawless are her nephews, Mr. James Allen, Dale Johnson.

Charles H. "C.H." Berry, Jr. of Covington, age 92, passed away November 26, 2016, at his home in Almon surrounded by his family. Mr. Berry served our country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He worked as a carpenter and farmer all his life, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with family. Mr. Berry was the proud owner of Berry's Christmas Tree Farm in Covington, and served as County Commissioner for Newton County. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles H. and Mattie Lou (Owens) Berry, Sr.

 

"C.H." is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Hilda E. Berry; children, Charles and Jeanette Berry, Linda Berry, all of Covington; grandchildren, Chuck and Lori Berry, Christy and Scoot Allen, all of Covington; great-grandchildren, Chase Berry, Anslee Allen, Hartlee Allen, Taylor and Amanda McCart, Nathan McCart, all of Covington; step-grandchildren, Matt Tumlin of Monticello, Mark Tumlin of Covington; two nieces; one nephew.

Betty Jean Bankston of Woodville, GA, passed away November 20, 2016, at 78 years of age.  Mrs. Bankston enjoyed crafts, flowers, and fishing with her husband.  She is preceded in death by her parents.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Poole; son, Charles Poole, Jr.; granddaughter, Angel Dawn Dickerson; sisters, Alice and Faye.

Delories Carithers

Delories Carithers of Covington, passed away November 20, 2016, at 78 years of age.  Mrs. Carithers attended Gaithers United Methodist Church.  After 17 years of service at Hercules, she retired and began a new career as a supervisor at Stanley Tool.  Mrs. Carithers enjoyed crocheting, gardening, and cooking, but most of all, she cherished the time she spent with her family.  She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Billy" Carithers; son, Timothy Carithers; parents, William Elford and Doris Deann (Pierce) Brown; brother, Ronald Brown.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Sandra Carithers Gossett; son, James L. Carithers, both of Covington; grandchildren, Daniel Chavez and his wife, Delores, Justin James, James E. Carithers, Shane Crane, Jason Carithers, Bryan Carithers, 13 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.

obit for Leo S. Mallard, Jr.

Leo S. Mallard, Jr. of Covington, passed away November 19, 2016, at the age of 52. Mr. Mallard was a former science educator at Eastside High School, a part of the Newton County Board of Education. He was a native of Covington, and attended Piedmont Academy (K-12) where he graduated in 1982. Mr. Mallard went on to attend Georgia Southern where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order, then later transferred to UGA, where he received a B.S. in Forestry Resources with a concentration in Wildlife Management and Biology in 1988. While at UGA, he became a member of the Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Zeta, and Xi Sigma Honor Societies, and was also an active member of the National and UGA Chapter of the Wildlife Society and UGA Forestry Club. Mr. Mallard was also the recipient of the Southeastern Timberland Scholarship. He then served as an Environment Education Specialist at Rock Eagle 4-H Center for 2 years, then was hired as the Director of The Environmental Forest for the Elbert County Board of Education for 2 years. Mr. Mallard has been involved in Scouting for 20 plus years, earning the rank of Eagle Scout, and becoming a member of the Order of the Arrow. He served as Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Scout Master and Scout Master of Troop 222. Mr. Mallard also served as the District Camping Director, and attended Philmont Scout Ranch as a Crew Chief (1981) and Adult Supervisor (1989).  For three summers, he served as the Program Director for Bert Adams Scout Reservation. From 1993 to present, Mr. Mallard has been a science teacher for the Newton County Board of Education, teaching at Cousins Middle School and Eastside High School (2003 – present). He has served as School Webmaster for both schools, Science Department Chair (Cousins), Hearing Panel Member, Technology Committee, Partners in Education Committee, SACS Committee Member, Field Day County Committee, Track Coach, Assistant Football Coach and the Outdoorsmen Club Sponsor and Staff Development Instructor. Mr. Mallard was recognized as a Class Nobel Educator of Distinction by the National Society of High School Scholars, and was selected as Eastside High School 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year. He was preceded in death by his father, Leo S. Mallard, Sr.; grandparents, Leo and Mary S. Mallard, Allen J. and Isabel B. Gilbert.

 

Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Renèe A. Mallard; daughter, Mackenzie L. Mallard; mother, Barbara G. Mallard; sister and brother-in-law, Lisa D. and Frank Goveaszzo of Cumming, GA; brothers and sisters-in-law, Judson D. and Lesli D. Mallard of Athens, GA; Clayton T. and Laura W. Van Lec "Lecky" Hughes of Decatur, passed away November 14, 2016, at the age of 82. Ms. Hughes earned her Bachelors from Meredeth College, North Carolina. She was a member of Avondale Patillo United Methodist Church, and was a past member of Glen Haven United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Abbott Milton and Ellieen (Tyler) McWhorter; sister, Nancy McWhorter Fisher.

obit for Deputy Justin White

Deputy Justin White of Monticello, passed away November 15, 2016, at the age of 28. A 2007 graduate of Newton County High School, Justin served as a deputy with the Newton County Sheriff's Office since 2012. He was a very dedicated law enforcement official who cared deeply about the people he served. Justin was among the best in dealing with situations involving family violence. He was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan, loved fresh-water fishing, and deer hunting. Justin was a very loving father, who worked hard to support his family. He considered his dog, Max, to be his "four-legged son." Polos and jeans were his favorite attire; anyone who wishes is encouraged to wear them for visitation. Justin was preceded in death by his grandmother, Brenda Vining.

Ethel "Ruth" Henderson

Ethel "Ruth" Henderson of Covington passed away November 15, 2016, at 79 years of age.  A member of Canaan Baptist Church, Mrs. Henderson enjoyed crocheting, reading, gardening, and funny movies.  She retired from Hercules after 29 years of service and began a new career at Ingles Deli. Mrs. Henderson will be remembered for the delicious food she prepared. Preceding her in death were her husband, Richard W. Betty Ann (Sumlar) Hutcheson of Stone Mountain, passed away November 12, 2016, at the age of 77. Mrs. Hutcheson, affectionately known as "Nanny Betty," loved taking care of the children and grandchildren in her family. When not spending time with loved ones, she took pleasure in flower gardening, cooking, and listening to classic country music, especially Conway Twitty, Mrs. Hutcheson was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Hutcheson; parents, Robert "Pete" Lee and Lillian (Byrd) Sumlar; and, sister, Dorothy Sumlar.

Steve Deal

Steve Deal of Mansfield passed away November 7, 2016, at 60 years of age.  A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Steve loved traveling and had traveled all over the world.  Known as "Cowboy", he opened Cowboys' BBQ so people could come and play the music he loved.  Steve was the proud father of Bobo, his wonderful and loyal dog.  Equipped with a great sense of humor, he loved life to the fullest and never met a stranger.  Steve cherished his family and enjoyed every minute he spent with them. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Betty Deal.

 

Survivors include his wife Vickie Deal of Mansfield; son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Julianne Knowles of Mufreesboro, TN; grandchildren, Karsyn and Presley Knowles; and nephew, Thomas Few.

Salvatore L. Garland, Jr., of Madison passed away November 7, 2016, at 56 years of age.  A 1978 graduate of Newton County High School, Mr. Garland proudly served in the U.S. Navy for 6 years.  He retired from the automobile industry as a Finance Manager after more than 20 years.  Mr. Salvatore was a long-time parishioner at St. Augustine Catholic Church.  In addition to being a fan of the Braves and Elvis, he enjoyed hunting.  Preceding him in death were his parents, Salvatore Louis, Sr., and Jacqueline (Vallett) Garland; and brother, Michael Garland.

obit for Charles Terry (Pop) Smith

Charles Terry (Pop) Smith of Oxford, passed away November 4, 2016, at the age of 69. Mr. Smith was a painter and mechanic for many years. Once known as the "best transmission man" in the Covington area, he was affectionately known as the "Rag Man" in his later years. Mr. Smith was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Never one to meet a stranger, and having a remarkable sense of humor were two of his greatest attributes. Mr. Smith enjoyed watching the History Channel and was an avid fan of NASCAR racing. He was a member of Calvary Community Church. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, William Patterson and Viola Ruth (Swofford) Smith; five brothers; and three sisters.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 44 years, Nancy W. Smith; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Jason Rowe of Oxford; son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Diana Smith; grandchildren, Josh Smith, Chase Barkley, Trey Smith, Philip Rowe, Tiffany Rowe, Jordan Smith and Abigail Smith; great-grandchildren, Wesley Smith, Mason Smith; caregiver and sister-in-law, Mary Yates Womack of Oxford; two sisters-in-law, Faustine Payne of Oxford, Florine Womack of Snellville; brothers-in-law, Tommy Womack of Oxford, Jim Womack of Loganville; one aunt; several nieces and nephews; and beloved dog, Gabby.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Smith will be held Monday, November 7, 2016, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, Covington, with Rev. Everett Leavell officiating. Friends may visit with his family at the funeral home, Sunday, November 6, from 2:00 – 5:00 PM.

obit for Mr. Joseph M. Jackson

Joseph M. Jackson of Covington, passed away November 2, 2016, at the age of 79. Mr. Jackson attended Eau Claire High School in Columbia, SC, where he was a star athlete for both the football and baseball teams. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Covington. Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by his son, Thomas LaGrant Jackson; and parents, Murdock and Annie Ruth (Hollingsworth) Jackson.

 

Survivors include his wife, Frankie Jackson; daughter Peggy Ann Adcox and her husband, Lonnie Alan Adcox, daughter, Charlene Jackson Timmie and her husband, James Davis Timmie, III; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Jackson will be held Sunday, November 6, 2016, 2:00 PM, at Calvary Baptist Church, 4228 Mill Street, Covington, with Pastor Ron Swann officiating. Following his service, everyone is invited to stay for refreshments and fellowship with Mr. Jackson's family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, or the Alzheimer's Association Georgia Chapter, 41 Perimeter Center East, Suite 550, Atlanta, GA 30346.

obit for Geri McCrackin

Geri McCrackin of Covington passed away November 2, 2016, at the age of 87. Mrs. McCrackin was married to Frank for 68 years, spending 15 of those years working with her husband at Williams Brothers Lumber Company in Covington. Mrs. McCrackin adored her family, loved to joke around, and was always one to have a good time. Cooking and hosting family for the holidays brought her great joy. Thanksgiving was the time of year when she would make her wonderful dressing. Mrs. McCrackin liked to shop, go to yard sales, and restore antiques. She could be found daily reading the local paper, and when it was football season, cheering on the Georgia Bulldogs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank A. McCrackin; parents Benjamin and Alma Brantley; son-in-law, Jimmy Knight.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, June Knight and Curtis Smith of Mansfield; son and daughter-in-law, David and Judy McCrackin of Covington; grandchildren David and Rhonda Knight, Edgar and Traci Ramey, Jason and Wendy McCrackin; great-grandchildren, Justin Autry, Jaron Autry, Dawson Knight, Logan Knight, Abby Reese McCrackin; brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Carol Brantley; several nieces and nephews.

 

A Graveside Service for Mrs. McCrackin will be held Saturday, November 5, 2016, 1:00 PM, in Lawnwood Memorial Park, 1111 Access Road, Covington, with Rev. Richard Culpepper officiating. Friends may visit with the family, Friday, November 4, from 6 – 8 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral home, 1215 Access Road, Covington.
