obit for Paige Segrest

 

Paige Segrest, age 47, of Conyers, passed away August 30, 2017, at Piedmont Newton Hospital. She was born February 9, 1970, to Gerald Lewis and Joan Champion. Paige had a fun-loving and energetic spirit that was endearing to everyone she met. Whether fishing or camping, she liked being outdoors - the perfect place to wear her favorite baseball hat.

 

Survivors include her partner of over 15 years, Lori McCord of Conyers; daughter, Brittany Segrest of Auburn, WA; parents, Gerald and Faye Lewis of Mansfield; Joan and Quinton Champion of Covington; brothers, Mark Lewis of Conyers, Justin Champion; grandmother, Mattie Bowden, both of Covington; as well as two grandchildren.

 

A private memorial service for Paige will be held at a later date.

Elizabeth Anne Dameron Young (Beebie)

Elizabeth Anne Dameron Young (Beebie) of Covington, passed away August 27, 2017 at 61 years of age.  Mrs. Young graduated from Agnes Scott College in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and went on to attend Columbia Theological School.  An ordained minister and a lifetime member of Presbyterian Women, she was the Music Director at Gum Creek Presbyterian Church.  In addition, Mrs. Young was the preschool director at Grace Covenant Preschool for many years. She was a devout Christian who introduced a multitude of children to Jesus.  Preceding her in death were her maternal grandparents, Howard and Faye Brandon; paternal grandparents, Grover and Jessie Dameron; mother-in-law, Nadine Young; and brother-in-law, Kim Young.

Ron Hieber officiating.  A private Graveside Service was held at Lawnwood Memorial Park in Covington.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Gum Creek Presbyterian Church.

Michael D. (Mike) Allen, Sr.

Michael D. (Mike) Allen, Sr., of Covington, passed away August 25, 2017, at 65 years of age.  A lifelong resident of Newton County, Mike was known for having a green thumb and being able to grow anything!  He was a family may who cherished his family and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Sherry Lynn Glaze Allen; and parents, George Alfred, Sr., and Martha Allene (Payne) Allen. 

 

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer Ann and Ryan Kelly of Minot, ND; son and daughter-in-law, Robbie Allen and fiancé, Dennise Collum, both of Covington; grandchildren, Blaise Kelly, Ariana Kelly; brother, George Alfred (Big Al) Allen, Jr. of Covjngton.

Mahembe Samueli, age 65, of Clarkston, passed away August 26, 2017.  A member of Light Mission Pentocostal Church in Clarkston, Mr. Samueli was a man who strongly believed in family and helping others. Meeting new immigrants and mentoring them as they acclimated to a new culture here in the United States was a passion for Mr. Samueli. He was preceded in death by four children; and his parents.

Martha Naomi Toney of Covington, passed away August 26, 2017, at 91 years of age. Retired from Boeing Aerospace after 15 years of dedicated service, Mrs. Toney was a member of Conyers Church of Christ and Sunny Hills Church of Christ in Fullerton, CA. Mrs. Toney liked to bowl, fish, play bridge and put together puzzles. She was a doting mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Mrs. Toney was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Marcus Juan Toney; and parents, Herbert and Famie Mae (Smith) Childs.

Obit - Sonja Charlene Queen

Sonja Charlene Queen, age 46, of Mansfield, passed away August 24, 2017. Sonja was employed by the Newton County School System where she served as Nutritionist Manager. She was an avid Georgia Bulldog fan, fitness enthusiast and enjoyed shopping and reading romantic novels. Sonja loved traveling to the beach and spending time with her family and friends. Because of her spontaneous, fun-loving personality, she never met a stranger and will surely be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Wilson Queen, Sr.; parents, James "Jim" and Charlotte (Duncan) Sears.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Tiffani Queen of Mansfield; son and daughter-in-law, Tommy, Jr., and Tara Queen of Social Circle; and her beloved granddaughters, Remi Queen and Bella Martin.

Rev. B. Gene Bird of Covington, went home to be with his Lord on August 24, 2017, at 84 years of age. Dedicating over 65 years to the ministry, Rev. Bird retired as pastor of Covington Church of God after 19 years of faithful service. In 2009, Rev. Bird was ordained as bishop in the Church. He was currently a member of Conyers Church of God, and was also a member of the Minister Association. A true man of God, even in his final days he shared the gospel with everyone he met. Rev. Bird will be remembered as a loving and caring family man. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Peggy Keaton; parents, John Gussie and Reba (Bailes) Bird; as well as four brothers.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 49 years, Norma Bird; daughters and sons-in-law, Veronica and Mike Ingram, Sharon and Dan Maddox, Donna and Mike Davis, JoAnn and Scott Bedenbaugh, Deanna and Andy Hackney; sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. Greg and Jo Beth Bird, Kevin and Barbara Bird, Harley and Jeannie Willis, John Bird, Billy and Brooke Bird; son-in-law, Mark Keaton; 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mildred Benefield, Martha Webster, Paulette Brock; brothers, Rev. Aristides Liopiros of Covington, passed away August 24, 2017, at 83 years of age. Born in Andros, Greece, Mr. Liopiros served as a paramedic for the Greek Army. In more recent years, he worked at the family-owned business, Olympic Tire Shop, where he was in charge of making coffee and greeting customers. He was preceded in death by his parents, Antonios and Vasilife (Pandazis) Liopiros.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 47 years, Anna Liopiros; sons and daughters-in-law, Tony and Lisette Liopiros, Leo and Harriett Liopiros; granddaughter, Olivia Liopiros; and his nephew, Antonios Liopiros, and wife, Irene.

Daniel Hedgebeth Hoover of Conyers, passed away suddenly, August 21, 2017, at 47 years of age. Born in Elizabeth City, NC, Daniel was raised in Virginia. In 1991, he earned a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from Corcoran School of Art, in Washington, DC, and, in 1996, Daniel obtained his master's degree in Fine Arts, from Tyler School of Art, in Philadelphia. Employed by the Atlanta History Center and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Daniel also spent time working at the Hammond House, which Atlanta University Center supports. He was preceded in death by his father, Australia Arthur Hoover, Jr.; and niece, Olivia Hoover.

 

Survivors include his son, Mason William Koi Hoover of Decatur; mother, Aileen H. Hoover; sister, Kenya Hoover, both of Loganville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Australia A. Hoover, III, and his wife, Germaine, Michael Hoover, and his wife, Breeanne, all of Conyers; nieces and nephews; Tanzania Hoover, Iyona Hoover, Reyna Hoover, Jamya Hoover, India Hoover, Jaimie Hoover, Jacob Hoover, Julina Hoover; as well as a host of aunts and uncles.

J.P. Murphy of Covington, passed away August 23, 2017, at 73 years of age.  A resident of Newton County for over 40 years, J.P. worked for Lithonia Lighting and Evans Tool and Die before retiring.  He enjoyed yard work, hunting, fishing, and traveling to the mountains.  One of his favorite pastimes was joyriding! J.P. attended Cornish Mountain Baptist Church and will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather.  He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 45 years, Louise Murphy; as well as parents, J.C. and Lucille (Whitefield) Murphy.

Julius Ben Lynch, Jr.

Julius Ben Lynch, Jr., of Covington, passed away August 22, 2017, at 59 years of age.  Mr. Lynch was an avid NASCAR fan whose passion was cars. He treasured his family and loved spending time with them. Mr. Lynch also had a favorite friend, his Chihuahua, Blossom.  He was preceded in death by his father, Julius B. Lynch, Sr.

 

Survivors include his daughters and son-in-law, Christina and Dewayne Fuller, Amie Jennings; son and daughter-in-law, Travis and Sophia Lynch; three grandchildren; and mother, Rachel Folds.

James "Jim" Henderson

James "Jim" Henderson of Atlanta, passed away August 22, 2017, at 74 years of age.  Mr. Henderson proudly served his country for 13 years in the U.S. Navy, having served during the Vietnam War.  A member of Virginia Highlands Church in Atlanta, he retired from the Department of Veterans Affairs.  Mr. Henderson was preceded in death by his parents, J.B. and Pauline (Martin) Henderson. 

 

Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Melinda and Jim Adams; as well as special friends, Paul Singh and Chris Watkins.

Barbara Rider Moon

 

Barbara Rider Moon of Covington, passed away August 21, 2017, at 79 years of age.  Born to Hayne Fuller Rider and Dora (Cochran) McGahee, Ms. Moon enjoyed passing time watching soap operas and shopping.  But above all, she loved her family and cherished the time she spent with them.  Ms. Moon was preceded in death by her grandson, Jason Greene; and her parents.

 

Survivors include her daughters Regina Maughon of Covington, Sharon Anderson of Greenwood, SC; grandchildren, Shannon Anderson, Stephanie Perez; great-grandchildren, Alex, Briana, Makayla; as well as special friends, Betty Lou Hess and Alma Jean Baxter.

Betty Omiezelle Martin, of Covington, passed away, August 19, 2017, at 83 years of age. A resident of Jacksonville, Florida, for most of her life, Ms. Martin moved to Newton County in 2015. She explored her creative side when making crafts and decorating her home. Working in the yard was also a favorite pastime for Mrs. Martin. She will be remembered for her kind and loving personality. Ms. Martin was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse Monroe and Ruth (Curry) Elliott; sisters, Evelyn Springer, Louise Johnson; and brother, Russell Elliott.

 

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Wayne Allen, Debra and Tommy Price, Julie L. Martin and Phillip Dobbs; William M. Charles Ramey, of Covington, passed away August 15, 2017, at 72 years of age. Mr. Ramey moved to Covington in 1982. He was Equipment Maintenance Manager for the City of Covington. A member of Harvest Baptist Church for 17 years, he was loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Playing banjo was his outlet for a love of bluegrass music. Western movies and shows, as well as riding horses, earned him the reputation as a cowboy. Known also as a great provider, Mr. Ramey will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, D.H. and Mae Pauline (Lowe) Ramey; sister, Connie Barnard; and brother, Henry Ramey.

Joseph "Brent" Edge

Joseph "Brent" Edge of Covington, went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Monday, August 14, 2017, at 44 years of age.  He was a member of High Point Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and shared his love for the Lord as he taught a Sunday School class, sang in the choir, acted in many plays, and served as part of the Media Team.  Brent was a loving family man, a loyal friend, and a respected employer.  He was known for his honesty, thoughtfulness, and generosity.  He never met a stranger, and often displayed his unique sense of humor through "teasing", "cutting up", "picking at", and "aggravating" those he loved.  He treasured his family and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.  Brent was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Mary Ellington; maternal grandfather, Jimmy Raines; paternal grandparents, Effie and Jody Edge.

Marion Doris Beam of Covington, passed away August 12, 2017, at 84 years of age. Born to Curtis James and Annie Estelle (Montgomery) Brown, who have preceded her in death. Mrs. Beam was a member of Harvest Baptist Church.  Also preceding her in death were her husband, Horace Cleveland Beam; as well as sons, Rodney Beam and Gary Beam.

 

Mrs. Beam is survived by her daughter, Carol Chadwick of Covington; sons and daughters-in-law, Hoyt and Vickie Beam of Covington, Mark and Melissa Beam of Canton, Eddie and Christina Beam of Gulf Shores, AL, Rudy and Denise Beam, also of Covington; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley and Jimmy McCord, June and Donald Elliot; brothers and sister-in-law, Fred and Charlene Brown, Vaughn Brown; numerous nieces and nephews.

Tammy Maxey of Covington, passed away August 11, 2017, at 42 years of age. Tammy was of the Christian faith and loved her family dearly. She was editor and writer for various magazines, including the Pivot Point Quarterly and Christian Motorsports - now known as Chrysler Power Magazine. Combining her passion for writing and her love of the Lord, Tammy also authored devotional and faith-based poems. She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, John David Maxey, Sr.

Clara Ruth Morgan of Covington, passed away Thursday, August 10, 2017, at 88 years of age. A loving mother and grandmother, Mrs. Morgan adored spending time with her family, especially cooking meals for them. When not entertaining her loved ones, she liked to eat meals out – Mexican and oysters being two of her favorite foods. Mrs. Morgan also delighted in reminiscing about the past and revisiting where she once lived. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Alice (Darly) Thomas.

Rex J. Mitchell, of Covington, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at 83 years of age. Mr. Mitchell, married to the love of his life, Barbara, for 62 years, was a godly husband, father, and grandfather. He worked for Hercules, in Covington, and was a faithful member and deacon of Newton Baptist Church. Mr. Mitchell adored his church family and was known for having a pocket full of peppermints for the children. In addition to playing dominos, Mr. Mitchell liked to hunt, fish, and work in his garden. He was preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow Harold and Ruby Viola (Smith) Mitchell.

 

Survivors include his wife, Barbara S. Mitchell; daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and Ronnie Cowan, Joy and David Fielding, Rebecca and Dwayne Ratliff; son, Douglas Mitchell; grandchildren, Evelyn and Chad Kellett, Jacob and Afton Cowan, Emily and Ethan Howeth, Delaina Ratliff, Ean Fielding, Colt Ratliff; great-grandchildren, Addie Rose Kellett, Anneliese Kellett, soon-to-be-born, Emma Grace Cowan and Baby Kellett; sister, Doris and Terrell Loyd; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Mary Mitchell, William Mitchell, Johnny and Margaret Mitchell, Melvin and Carolyn Mitchell; as well as several nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends.

John Mark Burton

After a long illness, John Mark Burton passed away peacefully on August 8, 2017, surrounded by his friends, Andy and Amy Hess and their sons.  John "Mark" was a lifelong resident of Covington, Georgia until 2015 when he moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin to be closer to caregivers.   Mark was born January 27, 1955.  He is a survivor of brain cancer at age 13 and lived a full life after treatment.  Mark enjoyed a career of emergency and disaster medicine.  He worked as an early EMT and was the first native paramedic in Newton County.  He later earned his RN degree from DeKalb Technical College.  He was employed in the level 1 trauma center at Grady Hospital, and also worked at Newton and Rockdale hospitals.  Mark loved to help people.  He volunteered on disaster missions for the Red Cross receiving the prestigious Florence Nightingale Medal of Honor in 2011 from the International Committee of the Red Cross after volunteering at dozens of disasters nationwide.  He also worked on the GA-3 Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT), a federal medical team deployed to disaster areas.  He served at the Oklahoma City bombings, and the Pentagon following the 9-11 event among others. Mark also taught CPR, first aid and nursing skills courses at DeKalb College.  Later in his career, Mark was employed by Critical Care MedFlight, an air ambulance service, as a flight nurse which took him to many countries around the world.

Mark was preceded in death by his father and mother, John Carter Burton and Allene Capes Burton, and his brother Zachery Carter Burton as well as his maternal and paternal grandparents. 

 

Mark always kept a smile on his face despite the progressive health challenges that he faced for the last 7 years of his life.  He enjoyed listening to old country music, photography, gardening, decorating his home back in the woods and listening to the birds.  He really enjoyed driving his corvettes. 

 

A Funeral Service for Mark will be held Saturday, August 12, 2017, 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home. 1215 Access Road, Covington, with Rev. Dr. William B. Wade, Jr., officiating.  Interment will follow in Covington City Cemetery.  Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service on Saturday, from 2:00 – 3:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Red Cross, P.O. Woody L. Knight "Duck"

Woodie L. Knight "Duck" of Covington, passed away August 8, 2017, at 81 years of age. Mr. Knight grew up in Porterdale and retired from Snapping Shoals EMC after 37 years of service. A family man at heart, he also loved hunting, fishing and golfing. Mr. Knight was preceded in death by his parents, David and Helen Della (Piper) Knight; sister, Virginia Pike; and brother Marvin Knight.

 

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Peggy Knight; sons and daughters-in-law, Barry and Sherry Knight, Wade and Terri Knight, Shane and Mary Knight, Heath and Melinda Knight; sisters, Marilyn Hailey, Kathleen Hammonds; ten grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Olivia Hisky of Monticello, passed away August 8, 2017, at the age of 87. For 53 years, Mrs. Hisky was married to the love of her life, John Robert Hisky, and loved every moment they spent together. Being with family brought her immense joy, whether camping with her children and grandchildren, or cooking during the holidays. Coloring with her grandchildren was also a favorite pastime. Mrs. Hisky was preceded in death by her husband, John Robert Hisky; and parents, Samuel and Elma (Wheeler) Criddle.

Camron Tyler Dennis

Camron Tyler Dennis of Covington, passed away August 5, 2017, at 22 years of age.  Camron was an outdoorsman who especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a hard-working young man who had a great smile, and loved the time he spent hanging out with his family and friends.  Camron was a member of Central Community Church and will be remembered as a loving father, son, and big brother.  He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Joe and Linda Hughes.

Mrs. Middlebrooks spent her spare time crocheting and maintaining her flower garden. She was preceded in death by her parents, J.B. and Lois (Fincher) Patterson; and her brother, Jan Fincher Patterson.

 

Survivors include her loving husband of 64 years, Daniel Middlebrooks; daughter, Holly Hall; son and daughter-in-law, Danny Ray and Shenna Middlebrooks, all of Covington; grandchildren, Angela Stephenson, Nathan Glenn, Shellan Waters; six great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Peggy Patterson of Clearwater, FL; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Maurice Loren "Bud" Northcutt passed away peacefully August 1, 2017, at the age of 89.  He graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Building Construction, and earned a Master's degree from the University of Missouri, Rolla School of Mines. Bud served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers, retiring in 1978 as full Colonel after 30 years of distinguished service.  After the Army, Bud taught at Southern Polytechnic State University in Kennesaw, where he was beloved by his students.

 

Bud was preceded in death by his second wife, Maxine Moore Northcutt, and will be dearly missed by all who knew him and especially his surviving family: daughter, Linda Gardner, and her husband, Richard; son, Duane Northcutt, and his wife, Monica Lam; step-daughters, Kim Carter, and husband, Maurice, and Joy Casper; sisters, Norma Horton, Verna Teachworth; and his brother, Barry Northcutt.

 

Funeral Services will be held Monday, August 7, 2017, 3:00 PM, at the First United Methodist Church in Covington, Rev. Dr. Douglas Gilreath officiating. A private entombment service will be held at Memory Chapel Mausoleum in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family Sunday, August 6, 3:00 – 5:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the food pantry at the First United Methodist Church, 1113 Conyers Street, SW, Covington, GA 30014.

Kathy Hudgins - Complete Obit

Kathy Knight Hudgins of Conyers, passed away July 30, 2017, at 55 years of age. Kathy loved traveling to the beach, especially Panama City, FL.  She enjoyed crafts and used her artistic talent to build dollhouse furniture and accessories.  In addition, Kathy collected and painted birdhouses.  She cherished her family and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.   

 Kathy was preceded in death by her first husband, Greg "Bubba: Hudgins, second husband, Glover DeLancey; father, Anderson "Buck" Knight, Jr., maternal grandparents, Howell and Mary Lou Ellis; paternal grandparents, Anderson, Sr., and Annie Knight.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Holly Lynn and Matt Bryan; mother, Jackie Knight; grandchildren, Hunter Bryan, Bentley Bryan, sister and brother-in-law, Debra and Denzil Terrell; brother, Greg Knight; niece, Stephanie Loew, nephews, Dean Terrell, Andrew Terrell, Scott Knight; as well as several aunts and uncles.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Hudgins will be held Wednesday, August 2, 2017, 3:00 PM, at the chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Tim Walden officiating.  Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  Friends may visit with the family Tuesday, August 1, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM.
