Frances G. Stark of Covington, passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2017, at 85 years of age. Mrs. Stark was the oldest child of S.A. and Lois (Spears) Ginn of Covington, GA. She graduated from Agnes Scott College, and earned a Master of Science in Chemistry from the University of Georgia. Mrs. Stark married John A. Stark of Lawrenceville, GA, a former Navy pilot and a Georgia Tech engineer, who, according to him, "saved her from being an old maid and wearing gloves." They lived in Clearwater, FL, before settling in Atlanta where they raised three children whom they loved dearly. The Starks retired in 1995 to Covington, GA. Mrs. Stark loved her Sunday School classes, bridge groups, and all of her other clubs and groups. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Mrs. Stark was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, John A. Stark; parents, S.A. and Lois (Spears) Ginn; sister, Martha Ellen McCord, and brother, Rucker Ginn.

 

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Lois S. and Felix Peña of Fairfax, VA, Elizabeth S. and Donald Dorsey of Dayton, OH; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen J. and Naomi Stark of Signal Mountain, TN; grandchildren, Melita Peña, Carla Peña, Cameron Dorsey, John Dorsey, Danielle Dorsey, Rachel Dorsey, J.D. Stark, Marjorie Stark, Katherine Stark, Jacob Stark; sisters and brother-in-law, Elizabeth Alford of Lawrenceville, Stephanie and Billy Fortson of Covington; sister-in-law, Sally Ginn of Covington; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Stark will be held Friday, September 29, 2017, 11:00 A.M., at First Baptist Church, 1139 Usher Street, NE, Covington, with Rev. Tim Barnes officiating. Interment will follow in Shadowlawn Memorial Gardens, Altha Street, Lawrenceville. Friends may visit with her family at the church, prior to the service, from 9:30 – 10:30 A.M.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Stark's memory to First Baptist Church of Covington.

James Lee Davis

James Lee Davis of Covington, went home to be with his Lord September 25, 2017, at 52 years of age.  Always loving life and living it to the fullest, Mr. Davis enjoyed spending his leisure time playing the guitar, traveling to visit family, camping, and going to the beach.  He will be remembered a man who loved his family and cherished the time he spent making memories with them.  Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his mother, Joann (Roberts) Gagner; father, Harley Dean Davis; and niece, Casey Davis.

 

Survivors include his wife, Pam Stephens of Covington; daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Billy Ringer of Greer, SC; granddaughter, Taylor Ringer; sister and brother-in-law, Lisa and Eddie Gillespie of Martin; brother, Dean Davis of Watkinsville; nieces, Cheyenne Gillespie, Julie Davis, Lucy Hadaway; nephews, John Davis, Jackson Collins; as well as several cousins.

Elizabeth (Betth) Rabun Stroup

Elizabeth (Betty) Rabun Stroup passed away September 12, 2017. She was born in Evansville, Indiana on October 11, 1928, and grew up outside of Atlanta, in Covington, GA. Betty attended Emory at Oxford before going on to Vanderbilt where she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and became a Registered Nurse in 1949. While at Vanderbilt, she met her husband of over 60 years, David Garrison Stroup. They were married October 25, 1949. Betty was a lifetime Atlanta Braves fan, and avid golfer. She was a member of Lakeside Women's Golf Association (LWGA) and Georgia Women's Golf Association (GWGA). She also volunteered as a Pink Lady at South Fulton hospital and was very involved with the ACOG (American College of Gynecologists) Women's auxiliary. After over 40 years in Atlanta, Betty and Dave retired to Savannah, GA, where they lived at the Landings on Skidaway Island and enjoyed friends, family, and lots of golf. She also continued to do volunteer work at the local hospital in the flower shop, making arrangements for patients and families. In 2007, Betty and David moved back to Nashville to be near family. They resided at The Heritage in Brentwood. She is survived by her children, David G. Stroup, Jr., Susan (Markus) Rheberg Mittermayr, and Betty Anne (Tom) Mills; grandchildren: Anthony (Adrian) Mittermayr, Karl (Juliet) Mittermayr, Caroline (Ty) Dilbeck, Michael Mills; great-grandchildren: Angelina, Ashton, and Austin. Visitation was held Saturday, September 16, 2017, at Brentwood Roesch Patton Funeral Home with a funeral service following at 2:00 PM in the Chapel. A Graveside Service for Mrs. Stroup will be held Saturday, October 7, 2017, 11:00 AM at Covington City Cemetery, Davis Street, in Covington, GA.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Sunny Day (Brentwood United Methodist Church) or Accent Care Hospice Foundation.

Margaret Moreland of Conyers, passed away September 19, 2017, at 74 years of age. Mrs. Moreland attended Belmont Baptist Church and was retired from Bank of America, where she worked as a loan officer. She adored her family and delighted in socializing with loved ones and friends as often as possible. Mrs. Moreland also enjoyed cooking.  Preceding her in death were her parents, Vanicious Laverne and Virginia (Tedder) McLendon.

 

Survivors include her husband, Stan Watson of Conyers; sons and daughter-in-law, Heath and Gina Moreland of Lawrenceville, Van Moreland of Demorest, GA; grandson, Christian Moreland of Conyers; daughter-in-law, Edie Bone of Conyers.

 

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Moreland will be held Saturday, September 23, 2017, 3:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Nolan Jackson officiating. Obit - Edna Elliott

Edna M. Elliott, age 84, passed away peacefully on the evening of September 17, 2017 Edna was born in Jacksonville, Illinois, on May 17, 1933, to Alpha and Lucille (Butler) Megginson.  She moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and went to work for Delta Airlines in 1953. At Delta, she met Edward (Ed) Lee Elliott, Sr., and they married in Woodson, Illinois, on May 2, 1959.  Edna became a homemaker and stay-at-home mother to two children, while Ed continued to work at Delta. She made a wonderful home in southeast Atlanta and was active in school activities such as PTA and even served as PTA president for two years. Edna, Ed and their family traveled extensively and she visited her family in Illinois every summer.  They acquired property in Covington, Georgia, close to Jackson Lake, and spent almost every weekend "fixing up" the property and building a home. In 1975, the Elliott's moved their family to Covington as their primary residence.  In 1977, Edna suffered a brain aneurysm and a massive stroke which left her partially paralyzed.  That same year, Ed retired from Delta and took care of her until he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease and passed away in 1991.  Edna resided in many assisted living homes until her death on September 17th. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings, Alma Irlam and Doris Christensen.

Edna is survived by her two children, Pamela (Larry) Easton of Stockbridge, GA, Craig (Tammy) Elliott of Conyers, GA; 5 grandchildren, Elizabeth and Anthony Easton, Andrew and Lindsey Elliott, Lauren (AJ) Elliott Jackman; step-children, Edward Elliott, Jr. (Charlotte), Patricia Elliott, Larry (Ellen) Elliott and their children; siblings, Earl (Carol) Megginson, Merle (Martha) Megginson, Kay (Bill) McIlrath.  

Funeral Services for Edna will be held Sunday, September 24, 2017, 2:00 PM, at Baptist Tabernacle, 10119 Access Road, in Covington, with Dr. David C. Moody officiating and interment following in Starrsville United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, Saturday, September 23, from 5:00 – 8:00 PM. Scott Crosby of Covington, passed away September 16, 2017, at the age of 49. Scott was a family man, who cherished spending time with his family – especially his grandchildren and wife of 23 years, Bettie. He enjoyed traveling to the beach, riding his motorcycle and a good Dr. Pepper! Scott, a man who loved life and lived it to the fullest, will be forever missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his grandsons, Mika Scott Crosby and Jathen Thomas Crosby; mother, Sara Louise Cochran; and his father, Vincent Crosby.

Obit for Mr. Grady Coursey

 

Grady Coursey of Porterdale, passed away Friday, September 15, 2017, at the age of 88. For over 30 years, Mr. Coursey was a mechanic for the City of East Point. Even when not at work, he repaired cars as a hobby. Mr. Coursey liked to watch wrestling on TV, read the newspaper, and adored spending time with his granddaughter, Addie. He had a love for most things sweet, but Snickers bars were his favorite candy. Mr. Coursey was preceded in death by his daughters, Kathy Coursey- Boes, Rita Scheu; sisters, Joann Lee, Catherine Boyd, Dorothy Smith; brothers, Harvey Coursey, James Coursey, Clifford Coursey, Bill Coursey; parents, Oliver Thomas and Susie Irene (Hammond) Coursey.

 

Survivors include his granddaughters, Addie Davidson, and her husband, Hunter, of Olympia, WA, Amber Scheu, Corinn Scheu; grandson, Bryan Scheu; sister, Charlotte Hambrick; and sons-in-law, William Boes and Edward Scheu.

Telmo "Jr." Ortiz of Conyers, passed away September 9, 2017, at 23 years of age.  Known as an easy-going, giving and selfless young man, Jr. always had a smile on his face.   He was the owner and operator of Allservice, and enjoyed spending his leisure time going to the beach and hanging out with his family.  Jr. held the ones he loved dear to his heart and would give the clothes off his back to anyone in need.  He'd always be there, no matter what time it was, or what the reason was, he'd be there!

obit for Jeremy Ellington

 

Jeremy Paul Ellington of Covington, passed away September 12, 2017, at 31 years of age. A 2008 graduate of Eastside High School, Jeremy was passionate for all things sports, be it football, baseball or basketball. Cheering for his beloved teams - the Falcons, Braves, Hawks and the Florida Gators, was a favorite pastime. Not one to simply sit on the sidelines, Jeremy played for the Miracle League Baseball team in Rockdale County for 12 years, and was Ambassador for the March of Dimes for 2 years. He was also involved in the Special Olympics for Newton County. Jeremy's other love was public safety, especially police and firefighting. He was elected Honorary Sheriff's Deputy by Sheriff Jeff Wigington in 2007 and, in June of this year, he was nominated Honorary Fireman by Chief Dan Morgan of Rockdale Fire & Rescue. Jeremy loved the Lord and was a fan of Christian music. He also followed Garth Brooks and his music, and even received a phone call from Garth himself. Jeremy was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Edward Tate.

 

Survivors include his parents, Debra and David Carter, Craig and Lori Ellington; maternal grandmother, Eula Tate; paternal grandparents, Larry and Juanita Ellington; sisters and brother-in-law, Courtney Carter, Waver Griffis, Stephanie Brown, Lisa and John Howell; brothers and sister-in-law, Kasey Carter, Brock Carter, Clayton Carter, J.D. Carter, Josh and Maggie Ellington.

 

A Celebration of Life for Jeremy will be held Friday, September 15, 2017, 2:00 PM, at High Point Baptist Church, 12025 Highway 36, in Covington, with Rev. Morris Mitchell officiating. Karen S. Digby

Karen S. Digby of Covington, passed away September 11, 2017, at 72 years of age.  A 1963 graduate of Newton County High School, Mrs. Digby retired from Rutherford Equipment Co. after more than 33 years of service.  A very dedicated member of Julia A. Porter United Methodist Church where she served on the Administrative Board and sang with the choir, Mrs. Digby loved and was loved by her church friends.  She was also a member of a very special group of Porterdale Ladies called "Just Us Girls", better known as JUGS.  Her last anniversary and her 72nd birthday were spent in the hospital.  Mrs. Digby will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, aunt, and cousin.  She was preceded in death by her parents, R.B. and Sarah (Williams) Sealock; and sister, Sharon Poteet.

 

Survivors include her loving husband of 41 years, Jack Digby; sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis Digby of Mansfield, Tim and Jeannine Digby, Kirt and Elaine Digby, all of Covington, Robbie and Jeanne Digby of Fountain, CO; 10 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; niece and nephews, Steve Poteet, Melanie and John Hill; special cousin and caregiver, Elaine Taylor; as well as several great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces, great-great nephews, and cousins.

obit for Joanne Castleberry

 

Joanne Castleberry of Covington, passed away Sunday, September 10, 2017, at the age of 89. Mrs. Castleberry was a member of Covington First United Methodist Church, but was of the Baptist faith. For 50 years, she was an active member of Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Castleberry shared her love of music by playing the piano for others. In addition to Covington Manor and the Little Red Schoolhouse, she also played piano for her Sunday School class for over 40 years. A doting mother and grandmother, Mrs. Castleberry delighted in spending time with her loved ones. She was an amazing cook and enjoyed working in her flower garden. Mrs. Castleberry was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Edward Castleberry; and parents, Lester and Maggie (Perry) Malcom.

Wallace Shockley of Covington, passed away September 9, 2017, at 88 years of age. Mr. Shockley attended Faith Baptist Church, in Newborn, and was a member of The Baptist Tabernacle, in Covington. A family man at heart, he was known to light up a room with his witty and infectious sense of humor. Athletic in nature, Mr. Shockley was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed baseball, boxing, racing, fishing, and camping. He was as a jack-of-all-trades who could fix anything that needed repairing. Mr. Shockley also had an affection for dogs, especially his Schipperke, "Honey Bear". He was preceded in death by his former wife, Sarah Shockley; son, Wallace Shockley, Jr.; parents, William and Ada (Pittman) Shockley; and sisters, Macie Warbington, Ethel Swinks.

obit for Mr. James Fletcher Bailey, III

 

James Fletcher Bailey, III, of Conyers, passed away September 7, 2017, at 75 years of age. Mr. Bailey was a native of Covington and a graduate of Newton County High School. He proudly served in the United States Navy for 6 years. After retiring from Asea Brown Boveri, Mr. Bailey devoted time to his much-loved hobbies, sport-shooting, fishing, and caring for his aquariums. He also liked to tinker with building model boats and airplanes, and, for a short time, even dabbled in photography. Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by his loving wife of 33 years, Beverly (Johnson) Bailey; parents, James Fletcher, Jr., and Charlie Mae (Wilson) Bailey; and his miniature Schnauzer, Wags.

 

Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Stephanie Hatch of Athens, Jennifer and Scott Huff, Andi and Gregg Thomas, all of Madison; and grandchildren, Connor Hatch, Reagan Hatch, Landon Huff, Ryan Thomas, William Thomas.

 

A Graveside Service for Mr. Bailey will be held Saturday, September 9, 2017, 3:00 PM, at New Covington Cemetery, Davis Street, in Covington, with Rev. Tom Lee officiating.

William Emmett Cowden, Jr.

William Emmett Cowden, Jr., of Covington, passed away September 1, 2017, at 68 years of age.  Mr. Cowden was a member of Allen Memorial United Methodist Church.  He was preceded in death by his parents, William Emmett, Sr., and Lois (Arnold) Cowden.  Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Renate (Posey) Cowden; and daughter, Rebecca Arnold.

 

A Memorial Service will be held at Allen Memorial United Methodist Church, in Oxford, at a later date.

Michael Berry Rooks

Michael Berry Rooks of Covington, passed away September 5, 2017, at 65 years of age.  Mr. Rooks was a 1970 graduate of Newton County High School and had worked with his father and brother Rickey, at Rooks Custom Woodworks for over 40 years.  He was preceded in death by his parents, John Louis and Christine (Berry) Rooks. 

 

Survivors include his brothers, and sisters-in-law, Charles Gary and Cindy Rooks, John Wayne and Jimmi Ruth Rooks, Rickey and Carol Rooks; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Joyanna "Janna" Salembier

Joyanna "Janna" Salembier of Monticello, passed away September 3, 2017, at 67 years of age.  One of her favorite pastimes was reading.  Janna will be remembered as gentle with a loving spirit who was a "mom to all".  She loved her children and grandchildren unconditionally and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.  Preceding her in death were her parents, Arnold and Ridgely (Fritschmann) Cropf.

 

Survivors include her devoted husband of 47 years, Jeffrey W. Salembier, daughters and sons-in-law, Valerie and Edward Fritz, Jessica and Sam Kelly, Trish and Larry Furphy; son and daughter-in-law, David and Tiffani Salembier; grandchildren, Tyler, Taylor, Ashleigh, Victoria, Austin, Savannah, Alexandra, Wyatt, Mallory, Raven, Bella; great-grandchildren, Lincoln, Emmett; sisters and brothers-in-law, Wendy and Scott Bailey, Amy and Faron Hilley; and nephews, Michael, Derek, John, Sawyer

 

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Salembier will be held Friday, September 8, 2017, 1:00 PM, at Shiloh Baptist Church, 9595 Highway 142, in Newborn, with Pastor Danny Sorrells officiating.  Friends may visit with the family at the church following the service.  In lieu of flowers, it is the wish of the family that contributions be made to Abbey Hospice, 215 Azalea Court, Social Circle, GA  30025 in memory of Mrs. Salembier.

Obit - Robert Gerald (Bobby) Floyd, Sr.

Robert Gerald (Bobby) Floyd, Sr., of Newborn, passed away September 4, 2017, at 76 years of age.  Among Mr. Floyd's favorite pastimes were square dancing, listening to Cajun music, working in his yard, and traveling.  A member of CrossRoads Baptist Church, Mr. Floyd enjoyed spending time with his friends - but most of all he loved his family and cherished the time he spent with them supporting their various activities.  He was preceded in death by his parents, John Edward and Frances (Thomas) Floyd.

 

Survivors include his wife, Kay Floyd of Newborn; sons and daughters-in-law, Robbie and Marcy Floyd of Marietta, Greg and Susan Floyd of Lilburn, Lane and Erin Floyd of Canton; grandchildren, Alyssa Floyd, Ansley Floyd, Harrison Floyd, MaryRuth Davis, Sandra Faye Davis, Kensington Floyd, Jesse Wade; great-grandchildren, Logan Wade, Isla Wade; sister, Patricia Floyd of Norcross; nieces,  Merilee Templeton, Jill Kinsella; great nieces and great nephews, John Henry Templeton, Alex Kinsella, Lindsey Kinsella, Sharon Kinsella; daughters-in-law, Lisa Wheeler, Sarah Wade; brother-in-law, Jack Harrison and wife, Doreen of Byron.

Walter H. Parker, III, "Butch" of Covington, passed away September 1, 2017, at 54 years of age. Mr. Parker was a resident of Newton County for over 30 years, and a member of Callie Fuller Baptist Church. Employed with Pratt Industries as a truck driver, Mr. Parker's true passion was racing – whether on a dirt-track, or making laps in a go-cart. He also delighted in taking his grandchildren to ball practice and games. Mr. Parker will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Harold Parker, II.

 

 

Survivors include his wife of loving wife of  28 years, Tracy Parker; daughter and son-in-law, Khristie Bowman and Gabe Smith of Oxford; son, Travis Fuller of Covington; grandchildren, Alissa Cannon, Angel Bowman, Jade Smith, Gracie Bowman, Ryan Smith, Dillon Smith, Logan Fuller; mother, Charlene Black; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Edward Pugh, Mechelle and Will Stewart, all of Winder; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gene and Sue Parker of Winder, Mark and Pam Parker, Bill and Angie Black of Dallas; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Shelda Jean Dial Sanders of Covington, passed away, Thursday, August 31, 2017, at the age of 79. Jean enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She attended Eastridge Community Church where she was a member of the Joyful Noise Group. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmy Glenn Sanders; son, Robbie Glenn Sanders; as well as her parents, Robbie M. and Virginia Dial.

Carol Ann Voshell, age 78, of Social Circle, passed away August 30, 2017. Social in nature, Ms. Voshell was happiest when spending time with family and friends. Hosting parties, bowling, or riding motorcycles were just a few of her favorite ways to fellowship with others. She also enjoyed traveling up north to visit family and loved being with her dogs. Ms. Voshell was preceded in death by her parents, David and Catherine (McGrath) Durant.

 

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Audrey Green and Tim Hodges; Margaret and Clarence Beich; son and daughter-in-law, Richard, Jr., and Jenny Voshell; grandchildren, Katherine Voshell, Carolyn and Garett Ruby, Christine and Matthew Rickards, Kimberly Voshell, Kayla Beich, Krysta Beich, David Beich; twelve great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Billy Carroll; as well as several nieces and nephews.
