obit for Marie R. Thompson

Mrs. Marie Rose D'Esposito Thompson, wife of the late William Emory Thompson, went home to be with her "Honey" on October 25, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents and several brothers and sisters. Born January 16, 1935, on Staten Island, New York to Italian immigrants, Marie found her sweetheart on vacation in Virginia Beach while he was stationed at Fort Lee. She fell in love and within a year was married on July 16, 1956. Later, they settled in Georgia and began to raise a bountiful family of seven children: Sara (Phillip Merritt), Rose (Travis Collins), first set of twins - Mary (Steve Horton) and Bucky Thompson (Jeannette), second set of twins - Tim Thompson (Justine) and Tony Thompson (Susan), and the last of the siblings, Victor Thompson (Amanda).  Her favorite joy was to see the smiling faces of a multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great, great-grandchildren. Other surviving family members include one sister, Rena Mazella of Scottsdale, Arizona and numerous nieces and nephews.

She always had a love for children. While her own kids were in school at Heard-Mixon Elementary in Covington, Georgia, she volunteered there, later serving as a substitute teacher for many years. Often, she would encounter her former students around town, now all grown up with families of their own. They would always say "hi" and speak of fond memories, and perhaps of how she kept them on the straight and narrow.

She loved God and was deeply rooted in her faith. She and her husband were one of the founding families of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Covington, where she recently attended the 40th anniversary celebration of the Church. Even though she had become completely deaf in later years, she never met a stranger, making friends wherever she went. Her hearing impairment did not inhibit her love of people, nor her bragging about her family.

One of her favorite sayings, which she employed often, was "YIKES", usually in a good-natured expression of the sentiment. So to quote Mom, one who loved life deeply and one who was much-loved – we say "YIKES" once more, only this time with a sad smile.

Her family deeply appreciates all the prayers, support, and love that you all showed her throughout the many years of her life and during her recent illness.

A Funeral Mass for Mrs. Thompson will be held Friday, October 27, 2017, 4:00 PM, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 11524 Highway 278, in Covington with Rev. Fr. Roberto A. Orellana officiating. Friends may visit with her family at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, Thursday, October 26, 2017 from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM.

Obit - Chester Parker

Chester Lanier Parker, Jr., passed away September 25, 2017. He was born in Newton County, GA, December 22, 1948, to the late Mary Day and Chester Lanier Parker, Sr. Growing up in Covington, GA, he was an active member of Lovejoy United Methodist Church and was top ten graduate of Newton County High School. He went on to graduate with honors from Georgia Tech with a degree in Industrial Engineering. While at Tech, Chester entered the co-op program with the Georgia Power Company and remained there until his retirement in 2015. He held many positions with the Power Company during his 47 years, but enjoyed none more than leading teams into storm ravaged areas around the country to restore power to millions of people.  He mentored countless young engineers who have continued his legacy and passion for the job.  In addition to his work with the Power Company, he was a member of a number of organizations, including Chairman of the UPC, President of the Airport Area Chamber of Commerce, and was on the Board of Directors at South Fulton Hospital. Most recently he was a member of the Augusta Richmond County Exchange Club and the Georgia Power Ambassadors.

Chester enjoyed frequenting such eclectic culinary establishments as Henderson's in Covington, Ruth's in Augusta and Fresh Air BBQ, in Jackson; he was the epitome of a simple man with simple taste. What he enjoyed most, however, was spending time with his sons and wife. An afternoon watching the Master or a Braves, Falcons or Tech game with them was a perfect day to him. He was the kindest and most forgiving soul that you could ever know.

He is survived by his wife and childhood sweetheart, Mary Margaret; son, Brent and wife, Brooke; son, Lanier and partner, Charlotte; brother, Glenn Parker and wife, Ginger; sister, Lynn Savage and husband, Terry; Godchildren, Ella and Waters Jordan; as well as several nieces and nephews.
