Obit - Ricky Patterson

Ricky Patterson, of Conyers, died March 29, 2013, at the age of 61.  He enjoyed watching golf and was an avid NASCAR fan.  He was a family man and had a strong work ethic.  Ricky was preceded in death by his father, Rudolph "Pat" Patterson; and mother, Frances Mullins.

 

Survivors include his loving, devoted wife of 45 years, Roxanne; sons, Richard Eugene "Richie" Patterson, Jr., Russell Eric Patterson and his wife, Jessica; grandchildren, Haley Patterson, Austin Patterson, Caitlin Patterson; sister and brother-in-law, Teresa and Ernie Davis; aunt, Shirley White; numerous nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Elaine and Steve Roselle, Yvonne and Rick Redd, Teena and Keith Franks, Jawanna Pitts, Mitzi and Mark Burrous, Fonda and Bill Stowers, Wanda Pitts, John Pitts.

 

A Memorial Service for Ricky will be held Monday, April 1, 2013, 12:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, April 1, one hour prior to the service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Obit - Charles Eugene "Gene" Gadilhe

Charles Eugene "Gene" Gadilhe of Covington, passed away March 28, 2013, at the age of 88. Mr. Gadilhe was born in Ensley, AL, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Albert Gadilhe. He grew up in Anniston, AL, and graduated from Anniston High School where he played the trombone in the high school marching band. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, with his entire male senior class, and eventually served under General Patton's 3rd Division during World War II. While in the service, he met his wife, Elizabeth, and after serving nearly three years, they married in New York City. Mr. Gadilhe attended Auburn University where he received his Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of the National Professional Engineer Honor Society - Tau Beta Pi, and the International Professional Engineering Honor Society - Pi Tau Sigma; and worked as a Professional Engineer in both North Carolina and Georgia. In the past, he served as Deacon and Elder in the Presbyterian church, held offices in the Methodist Church, and was also a member of the American Orchid Society and the Atlanta Orchid Society. Mr. Gadilhe loved his family dearly, was so proud of his six daughters, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 67 years, Elizabeth (Mullaly) Gadilhe; daughters and sons-in-law, Genie and David Blough of Mobile, AL, Renee and Shelby Childers of Crawfordville, GA, Michelle and Randall Sims of Collegeville, PA, Cherie and John McElwrath of Crawfordville, GA, Alisa and Bill Phloeger of Oxford, GA, Nanette and Jeffrey Watson of Davidson, NC; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and sister, Alice Gadilhe of Highlands, NC.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Gadilhe will be held Monday, April 1, 2013, 11:00 AM, at the First Presbyterian Church, in Covington, with the Rev. Dr. William B. Wade, Jr., and Pastor Matthew Eugene Watson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memorial Gardens Fund of the First Presbyterian Church, 1169 Clark Street, SW, Covington, GA 30014.

Obit - Bitsy Harris Robbins

Bitsy Harris Robbins of Covington passed away after a brief battle with cancer, on March 26, 2013, at the age of 49. She loved her family dearly; the most important thing to her was taking care of her girls. They were truly her number one priority. She is loved and will be missed by her family and friends.

 

Survivors include her husband, Thomas Harold Robbins, II, of Covington; daughters, Marion Claire Robbins, Mackenzie Grace Robbins, Ansley Vee Robbins, Lisa Michelle Zuniga; granddaughters, Zoe Zuniga, Hailey Zuniga; parents, Richard and Violet Harris of Covington; sisters, Rebecca Harris of Covington, Beth Harris Thomas of Marietta; brothers, Buddy Harris of Madison, Buster Harris of Marietta; several nieces and nephews.

Stella Daniel Price of Covington, passed away March 26, 2013, at the age of 76. She was a member of Pentecostals of McDonough; and loved singing with her family. Mrs. Price enjoyed quilting and babysitting. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Annie (Awford) Daniel; and her sister, Rosie Davis.

Jo Jo Summerville, 61, of Monticello, passed away March 25, 2013. Jo Jo was a humble, loving, funny, free-spirited man, who cared deeply for his family and friends. He was soft-spoken, yet a very hard worker. He will be missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sarah (Harp) Ford; and his father, Grover Summerville.

Paul J. Hoffner, of Covington, GA, passed away March 24, 2013, at the age of 80. Mr. Hoffner was born in Bethlehem, PA, to the late Paul and Rose (Stummer) Hoffner. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served his country during the Korean War. Mr. Hoffner enjoyed working in his yard, spending time with his family and friends, and always had a good time. He loved his family dearly, and will be missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Robert Hoffner.

 

Survivors include his wife Mimi Hoffner; daughters and sons-in-law, Donna Geer of Hellertown, PA, Lynne and Kevin Judah of Tucson, AZ, Paula and John Burton of Scottsdale, AZ; son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Sarah Hoffner of Lititz, PA; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Rita Pursel of Hellertown, PA.

Obit - Lloyd Milas "Bo" Lyda


Lloyd Milas "Bo" Lyda, of Oxford, passed away March 22, 2013, at the age of 26.   He was a 2005 graduate of Newton County High School and attended Georgia Perimeter College after he graduated.  He enjoyed fishing, singing and performing in plays.  His favorite music was country. Bo loved animals, especially cats.  He was a house sitter and cared for animals while doing his job.  He was beloved by the Oxford College faculty by providing this service for them.

 

Survivors include his parents, Lloyd M. and Amanda I. Lyda of Oxford; brothers, Robbie Lyda of Webster, FL, Jimmy Lyda of Covington; grandfather, Milas H. Irwin also of Covington; aunts and uncles, Evelyn Trimble, Andy and Kathleen Irwin, Sally and Ray McFolling; cousins, Liam Irwin and Morgan Casale, all of Covington; several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Betty McKinley Bagwell, of Social Circle, passed away March 21, 2013, at the age of 83.   She moved to Social Circle in 1965 from Decatur. She worked as a cashier for Food Giant Grocery Store and retired after 19 years of service.  Mrs. Bagwell was a member of Alcovy United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and attended the Young at Heart Sunday School Class.  At Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. Bagwell participated in senior activities with the Mt. Pleasant Activists.  She was also a member of Priceless Antiques.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Bagwell; parents, James Robert and Bertha (Chapman) Parker; and sisters, Mary Nell Garner, Doris Ragan, Pat Langford.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Betty Jean "B.J." and Tony Hawkins of Covington; son and daughter-in-law, James "Elmo" and Shirley Bagwell of Clarkston; 5 grandchildren, Jeff Hawkins, Jason Hawkins, Jody Hawkins, Sharlynn Davis, Joe Bagwell; 9 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Gilbert Wren

Gilbert "B-Cat" Wren, 63, of Covington, passed away March 20, 2013. He was of the Cherokee Indian descent, and was proud of his heritage. Mr. Wren was an all-around fun person, and enjoyed fishing, crabbing, and junkin'!

 

Survivors include his wife, Bridget Gail Wren; daughter, Dawn Marie Wren; sons, Bryant Kenneth Wren, Timothy Michael Wren; sisters, Mary Alice Walden, Jenny Wren; brother, George Hicks; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

 

Mr. Wren will be cremated, and his remains will be scattered in the Tomoka River, in Florida, at a later date.



Obit - Jack Mitchell

Jack Mitchell of Monticello, passed away March 20, 2013, at the age of 82. Mr. Mitchell currently served as a Trustee, assistant Sunday school teacher, and faithful member at Voice of Pentecost. He previously attended Gospel Tabernacle, in Porterdale, where he served as secretary and treasurer for 24 years. He also taught a youth Sunday school class. He loved his Savior, and loved his church family as his own. He enjoyed reading, camping, working in his garden, riding his tractor, and doing yard work. Mr. Mitchell loved his family dearly, and was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Lucy (Ricks) Mitchell; sister, Inez Smith; and his brothers, Dewey Mitchell, Howard Mitchell and Leon Mitchell.

Obit - Larry Knight

Larry Knight of Mansfield, passed away March 18, 2013, at the age of 63. Larry was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, in Shady Dale. He enjoyed vegetable gardening, fishing, raising game chickens, working in his yard, and grilling out. Larry was a loving and devoted husband, father, granddaddy, great-granddaddy, brother and friend. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lorie Lackey; mother, Maggie (Mooneyham) Dalton; and his father, Luther Knight.

 

He is survived by his wife of 46 years and the love of his life, Joyce Knight of Mansfield; daughters, Lisa Knight of Eatonton, Amanda Knight of Greensboro; grandsons, Arlin Harrin, Ethan Parish, Brandon Lackey, Zachariah Lackey; granddaughter, Draven Lackey; great-grandchildren, Miciah Lackey and Skyler Denise Lackey; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sara and Gene Lemonds of Social Circle, Sally and Buddy Berry of Porterdale, Lottie and Bob Clements of Covington; brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Donna Knight of Covington; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Obit - Sarah Huff Chesnut


Sarah Huff Chesnut, of Covington, died March 16, 2013, at the age of 91.  She retired from AT&T after 28 years of service.  A very involved member of Newton Medical Auxiliary, she volunteered many hours at Newton Medical Center. She was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Covington where she sang in the choir.  She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Chesnut, Sr.; and brothers, Fred Wellborn, E.M. Huff and Ellis Huff.

 

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, John and Judy Chesnut; granddaughter, Lori Chesnut Banks and her husband, Brad; great-grandchildren, Blake Mask and Sarah Kate Banks, all of Covington; brother, Harold Huff of Milledgeville; several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services for Mrs. Chesnut will be held Tuesday, March 19, 2013, 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. William B. Obit - Robert C. "Bob" Hatcher, Jr.

Robert C. "Bob" Hatcher, Jr., of Covington, died March 16, 2013, at the age of 71.  He was born September 11, 1941 to the late, Robert C. Hatcher, Sr. and Louise (Dillard) Hatcher. An avid fisherman, he was a member of many Bass Clubs and won many fishing tournaments and year end awards. Bob graduated from Americus High School where he achieved a perfect score on his SAT and was awarded a scholarship to Georgia State University earning a business degree.  He was employed by Terminal Transport as a credit manager and worked in sales for Amalgamated Credit Union, Payco, and Bonded Collection Corporation.  Bob attended Crossroads Baptist Church in Social Circle.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Hatcher Abear.

 

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Nancy Spaulding Hatcher of Covington; daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Harry Stiles of Mansfield; son and daughter-in-law, Robert I. and Mitzi Hatcher of Easley, SC; grandchildren, Sierra E. Stiles, Heather Stiles Finnell, Devin Seth Stiles, Ryan Parker; great-grandson, Hunter Finnell; sister and brother-in-law, Laverne and Irvin Brinson of Twin City; brother and sister-in-law, William "Billy" and Glenda Hatcher of Macon; several nieces and nephews.

Obit- Joseph Hall Jefferson

Joseph Hall Jefferson, 77, of Covington, Georgia, died Saturday, March 16, 2013.  He was born June 21, 1935 and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold William and Annis Lee (Twyman) Jefferson; and his beloved brother, Robert Moseley Jefferson.

 

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Susie Rainey Jefferson of Covington; son, William Nixon Rainey Jefferson of Atlanta; daughter, Clara Jefferson Hoban of Covington; grandson, Patrick Jefferson Hoban also of Covington; sister-in-law, Anne Kirby Jefferson of Albuquerque, New Mexico; niece, Kim Jefferson Tomasi also of Albuquerque, New Mexico; nephews, Kirby Jefferson of Dalian, China and Russ Jefferson of Dublin, Ohio.

 

Joe was a graduate of Pascal High School, Fort Worth, Texas, North Texas State University, Denton Texas, and he earned a Master's Degree from Georgia State University, Atlanta, Georgia.  He was a veteran of the United States Army.  Joe worked for Williamson-Dickie, McGregor Brunswick, Mobil Chemical, and he retired from Pennington Seed of Madison, Georgia.  He owned the Credit Bureaus of Covington, Conyers, and McDonough and was Director of the Associated Credit Bureaus of Georgia.

 

Joe was a past President of the Covington United Fund, past President of the Covington Rotary Club, past President of the Newton County Historical Society and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Covington.  He was an active member of Newton Medical Auxiliary and volunteered at Newton Medical Center.

 

Memorial Services for Mr. Jefferson will be held Monday, March 18, 2013, 3:00 PM, at the First United Methodist Church of Covington, with Rev. Dr. Douglas Gilreath and Rev. Jan McCoy officiating.  The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Sunday, March 17, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM.  No flowers, please.

Obit - Dorothy Brumbelow

Dorothy Brumbelow, 93, of Covington, passed away March 11, 2013. Mrs. Brumbelow loved gardening, was a very good cook, and will always be remembered for her delicious biscuits. She loved her family dearly, and was dedicated to her home. Mrs. Brumbelow was preceded in death by her husbands, Charles H. Davenport and Willie Brumbelow; her parents; sisters, June Poss and Betty Meeks; and her brothers, Howard Anglin, Earl Anglin, Edward Anglin, Willard Anglin, and James Anglin.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Vickie Pope; grandchildren, Steven Womack, Kimberly Womack, all of Covington; great-grandsons, Joshua Daniel and Christopher Daniel.

 

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Obit - Aileen Bertram Dye

Aileen Dye, age 93, died peacefully on Saturday, March 9, at the Covington, GA, home of her son, James Robert Bertram. She was preceded in death by her husbands, John F. Bertram, Jr., and James G. (Jack) Dye. Mrs. Dye was born in Corbin, KY, to Samantha Pearl Baker Lawson and James Marion Lawson, both natives of Corbin. Aileen was their only child, who early proved a strong student and gifted musician. She was proud of the education she received in Corbin schools; she went on to graduate from Cumberland College (now University of the Cumberlands) and received her bachelor's degree in education from Eastern Kentucky University in 1940. She also continued her musical activities, singing in church and school choirs and playing piano and organ at worship services.

 

On January 30, 1943, Mrs. Dye married John Foreman Bertram, Jr., of Vanceburg, KY, with whom she had three children, John Foreman Bertram III (known as Jack), Beverly Lawson Bertram, and James Robert Bertram (known as Bob). After Mr. Bertram's death in 1957, she married Jack Dye in 1960. Mrs. Dye resumed her career in the Vanceburg public school, teaching English in seventh and eighth grades for twenty years. She wrote, composed music for, and directed the school Christmas pageants, a highlight of Vanceburg holidays. Mrs. Dye also gave private piano lessons. Her students loved and respected her; many continued to send Christmas cards every year.

 

Mrs. Dye loved beauty of all kinds and cultivated elegance both in her person and in her surroundings. Aileen Dye will be remembered for her moral and emotional strength, her powerful will, and her sense of humor and style. Brought up in the Depression, widowed young, she never stooped to self-pity, but to the end repeated "I've had a lovely life."

 

Survivors include her daughter, Beverly Bertram Thomas of Loganville, GA; sons and daughters-in-law John F. and Maxine Rithmire Bertram of Monroe, GA; James R. and Laura M. Bertram of Covington, GA; grandchildren Meg Rithmire of Cambridge, MA, Jill Bolduc of Napa, CA, Jessica Thomas of Atlanta, GA, Rachel Thomas Kilpatrick of Loganville, GA, Charlotte Bertram Lancaster of Snellville, GA, and James Nathan Bertram of Greensboro, GA.

 

A memorial service for Mrs. Dye will be held April 4, 2013, 11:00 AM, at the First Baptist Church in Vanceburg, KY.



Obit - Daryl Herbert Norman

Daryl Herbert Norman of Covington, passed away March 10, 2013, at the age of 59. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Daryl was a member of High Point Baptist Church; and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and baseball. He is loved, and will be missed by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Christopher Daryl Norman; and his parents, Henry and Lillian (Hodges) Norman.

 

Survivors include his sisters and brothers-in-law, Gail and Sammy Herring of Covington, Joanne and Phil Phillips of Rutledge; nieces, Heather and Clint Adamson, Blaine Phillips and Jay Levan; nephews, Gregory S. Herring, Scott and Shellie Herring, Greg and Christy Phillips, Brandon and Jessie Phillips; great-nieces and great-nephews; several aunts and uncles.

 

A Memorial Service for Daryl will be held Saturday, March 16, 2013, 11:00 AM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Scott Herring officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, one hour prior to the service, from 10:00-11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1684 Barnett Shoals Road, Athens, GA 30605, or another charity of choice.

Obit - Melody Lynn Ingle

Melody Lynn Ingle, 60, of Conyers, began her eternal life with her Heavenly Father on March 9, 2013.  She was a teacher and recently retired from the Newton County School System.  She was a devout Christian always following God's will for her life and loved to support her husband in his music ministry.  Melody loved teaching, reading, taking scenic motorcycle rides, spending time at the lake, and going to yard sales with her family.  She looked forward to her monthly Girls Night Out group dinners with her adored friends.  Most of all Melody treasured spending time with her family, especially during the holidays.

 

She is survived by her loving family which includes her beloved husband of 40 years, Kent; two sons and their spouses, Kevin and Kristie Ingle of Marietta, Klint and Vanessa Ingle of Buford; grandsons, Karson and Kollin; parents Dr. Don and Lavona Davis of Social Circle; siblings Sharon Vaughn, Janet Adams and Randy Davis; and many nephews and nieces. 

 

A Memorial Service for Melody will be held Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington with, Rev. Tony Howeth and Dr. Don Davis officiating, and interment following in Social Circle City Cemetery with Rev. David Stroup officiating.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, March 11 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM.  Melody loved spreading the Word of God, so in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Newton Baptist Church - Youth or Missions Fund (newtonbaptistchurch.org).

Obit - Helen C. Ricks

Helen C. Ricks of Covington, passed away March 6, 2013, at the age of 87. She was born in Griffin, to the late Percy and Rosie (Berry) Christian, was a lifelong resident of the Oak Hill Community, and faithful member of Covington Church of God. Mrs. Ricks enjoyed quilting, sewing, cooking, and baking. She was friendly to everyone and never met a stranger. Mrs. Ricks was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, J.W. Ricks; one brother and two sisters; and daughter-in-law, Lula Ricks.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Donald Day of Covington; sons and daughter-in-law, Howard and Sarah Ricks of Panama City Beach, FL, Wayne Ricks of Covington; grandchildren, Tonya and Marlon Golden of Oxford, Sabrina and Richard Greenhaw of Smith Station, AL, Michael and Cheré Day, Jeff and Robin Day, Beth and Shane Carter, Amy and David Jones, all of Covington, Tammy and Jerry Hazlett of Lynn Haven, FL, Kimberly Cummings of Albany, Wayne Bailey of Panama City Beach, FL; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Russell and Dot Ricks of Covington; numerous nieces and nephews.

Obit - Shirley J. Davis

Shirley J. Davis, of Covington, passed away March 3, 2013, at the age of 73.  She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.  As a teenager Mrs. Davis worked at H. L. Green Company in Atlanta where she met her husband of 56 years.  She was employed by the Newton County Board of Education for 8 years prior to retiring on disability.   Mrs. Davis was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Social Circle.  She read her bible daily, and enjoyed camping, fishing, cooking, and crocheting as long as she was able.  She was especially known for her delicious cakes.  Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her parents, D. C. and Mary Frances (Sammons) Sheppard.

 

Survivors include her loving husband, Arthur W. Davis of Covington; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela Joyce and Gene Morgan of Monroe; son and daughter-in-law, Arthur Clinton and Jane C. Davis; grandchildren, Josh Davis, Cody Davis, Rodney Schoenfeld, Erica Reynolds, Elicia White; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Virginia and Roy Wilson of Covington, Edna Jean Baldwin of Loganville; brother and sister-in-law, Forrest Eugene and Sybil Sheppard of Newborn; several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services for Mrs. Davis will be held Tuesday, March 5, 2013, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Donald B. Obit - Josephine Canup Savage

Josephine Canup Savage, of Covington, passed away February 28, 2013, at the age of 85.  She worked for the Oxford Shirt Plant for 38 years and enjoyed vegetable gardening.  Mrs. Savage dearly loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her second family at Lovejoy United Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Savage; parents, Virgil and Flossie Canup; several brothers and sisters.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Bruce Tamplin; son and daughter-in-law, Phil and Carol Savage; grandchildren, Kerre and Jason Streetman, Jason and Della Hyde, April Savage; great-grandchildren, Macy, Blake, Caitlin, Austin, Ethan, Braxton; brother-in-law and his wife, Leon and Anne Savage; several nieces and nephews.

Robert W. (Sonny) Prince, Jr., of Monticello, passed away March 1, 2013, at the age of 80. Mr. Prince was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and proudly served his country during the Korean War. He was employed by General Motors - Lakewood Plant, and retired after 35 years of dedicated service. Mr. Prince was an active member of New Rocky Creek Baptist Church, having served as a Trustee of the church, was Director of the Brotherhood, and member of the church choir. He enjoyed gospel music, and loved to hunt and fish. Mr. Prince was preceded in death by his son, Michael Dunn; parents, Robert, Sr., and Mary Catherine (Finley) Prince; and his brother, John W. (Salty) Prince.

 

Survivors include his wife, Mary P. Prince; daughters and son-in-law, Penny Prince of Austin, TX, Dana and Kevin Davis of Lawrenceville; Lindsey Scarborough of Monticello; sons and daughter-in-law, Robert W.
