Obit - Doris T. Williams


Mrs. Doris T. Williams of Oxford, passed away May 30, 2013, at the age of 86. Mrs. Williams was an active member of Allen Memorial United Methodist Church, and enjoyed working with the youth at her church and both the local girl scouts and boys scouts. She enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens, and often participated in different functions with the activist group from Mt. Pleasant Church. Mrs. Williams loved her family dearly, and cherished her time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Clarence Don Williams; grandson, Toby Williams; parents, Starlen R. and Nora Mae (Baker) Thomas; and her brother, Dalton Thomas.

Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Patricia and David Bentley of Rutledge, Donna Almand Shope of Covington; son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Brenda Williams of Oxford; grandchildren, Jody Williams, Corey Williams, Josh Weathers, Melanie Weathers, Matt Bentley, Owen Bentley, Cain Bentley, Cain Almand, Jaime Almand Pitts, Dalton Almand; great-grandchildren, Haley Williams, Noah Williams, Hannah Williams, Gabe Williams, Gwen Williams, Taylor Bentley, Macayla Bentley, Braylee Almand, Wyatt Almand, Luke Almand, Maddox Pitts, Lane Pitts, Dawson Almand; several nieces, nephews, other family and close friends.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Williams will be held Sunday, June 2, 2013, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Charles Swaney and Rev. Horace Parr officiating, and interment following in Oxford Historical Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, June 1, from 6:00-8:00 PM.

Obit - Terry Dean Coker

Terry Dean Coker of Covington passed away Friday, May 24, 2013, at Southern Regional Hospital.  He was 54 years of age at the time of his death.  Terry was employed as a technician at Durkopp Adler American, Inc. in Norcross.  Born August 10, 1958, in the Jersey Community, Terry was an avid biker whose mechanical ability was a hobby he used frequently in the repair and restoration of cars.  He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Coker.

Survivors include his mother, Jo Ann Coker; daughter, Alexis Coker; sisters, Tracey Coker, Paula Coker Meeks; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Coker will be held Saturday, June 1, 2013, 2:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Lynn Head, Rev. Randell Allgood and Dr. Gary Coker officiating.  Interment will follow in Jersey Holiness Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, June 1, prior to the service, from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM.

Obit - John William "Billy" Moate

John William "Billy" Moate, most recently of Monroe, formerly of Covington, died May 25, 2013, at the age of 57.  He was a native and longtime resident of Newton County.  Billy loved the Lord, and enjoyed spending time with his family and being Papa to his grandchildren.  He was an avid NASCAR fan.  He was preceded in death by his son, Joshua William Moate; parents, William and Ruth Moate; and sister, Vera Moate.

Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Christina and Rodney Peters of Monroe; Holly and Lee Thompson of Covington; grandchildren, Briana Peters, Kimberly Peters, and Brooks Thompson.

A Graveside Service will be held Friday, May 31, 2013, 11:00 AM, at Lawnwood Memorial Park, in Covington.

Obit - Gloria Stapp

Gloria Stapp of Monticello, passed away May 28, 2013, at the age of 60. Gloria loved reading, and especially enjoyed reading her Bible. She was a very intelligent woman, always had an open door, and was willing to help anyone. Gloria never met a stranger, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alonzo and Louise (Carlyle) Boss; and sister, Janice Murphy.

Survivors include her best friend and father of her children, Johnny Stapp; daughters, Tammi Johnson of Monroe, Cathi Kitchens of Monticello; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Kayla Stapp of Covington; grandchildren, Ashley and Anthony Padilla, TJ Johnson, Corina Anderson, Morgan and Coley Kitchens, Cheyenne Hines, Riyah Stapp; great-grandchildren, Tylar and Addisyn Padilla, Trey, Aydon, and Mayson Johnson, Azayzel Barnes, Levi Kitchens; brother, LJ Boss of Madison; and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service for Gloria will be held by her family at a later date.

Violet A. Marchman, of Covington, passed away May 26, 2013 at the age of 86.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Percy Taylor Marchman.  Vicki was born in Armuchee, Georgia and attended high school and college at Berry College where she met Percy.  She is survived by 2 siblings, Jerry & Carolyn Stewart and June & Cal Norman; 2 children, Jan Steele and Mike & Anne Marchman; 4 grandchildren, Ashley & Eric Laney and Taylor Steele, Mike & Edith Marchman, and Pat Marchman; and 3 granddaughters, Charlotte, Reagan, and Emma.

 

Visitation will be held on Tuesday May 28, 2013 from 6:00 – 8:00 at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Rd. Obit - Willie Frazier


Willie James Frazier, of McDonough, GA, passed away May 20, 2013, at the age of 74.  One of thirteen children, he was born March 21, 1939, in Wetumpka, AL, to Leslie and Vinnie Frazier.  He was a truck driver for over 20 years and enjoyed traveling the open road.  It was often he would say he did not like to be confined to any one place.  Mr. Frazier was a proud, loving man and would do anything for his wife, children and grandchildren. It has been a long struggle for Willie James Frazier, but he didn't let his ailment bring him down until the very end.  His determination to stay and fight is such an inspiration to his family.  He is loved and will never be forgotten.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Isdora Sykes, Lucille Bracy, Ennis Bernice Gunn; brothers, Levan Frazier and Leslie Frazier, Jr.

Lloyd Madison Lyda, Jr., "Butch", of Oxford, passed away May 19, 2013, at the age of 68. He loved spending time outdoors, and especially enjoyed fishing, camping, rock hunting, and collecting coins. He was loved, and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Lloyd was preceded in death by his son, Lloyd "Bo" Lyda; and his parents, Lloyd and Lois (O'Kelley) Lyda.

Obit - Barbara Shannon Henry

Barbara Shannon Henry of Covington, passed away May 17, 2013 at Eastside Medical Center in Snellville.  She was 73 years of age at the time of her death.  When she was younger she enjoyed traveling to the beach and the mountains. Mrs. Henry was part of the Card Ministry at Newton Baptist Church, where she was a member.  She loved spending time with her family.  Mrs. Henry was preceded in death by her parents, Burgess William and Nellie Lou (Looney) Shannon; brother, Theron Shannon; and sister, Shirley Poulnot. 

 

Mrs. Henry is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dewey (Dubbie) Henry of Covington; son and daughter-in-law, Tony Wade and Stephanie Henry of Covington; daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Jerry Melville of Monroe; grandchildren, Jessica Atkinson, Joshua Atkinson, Natalie Henry; brother, Herman Shannon of Covington; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rachel Biggers of Covington, Charlotte and Larry White of Conyers, Janice and Bruce Wheeler of Covington, Vickie and Mark Gagne of Covington; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Obit - Virginia "Jeanette" McDaniel McSwain


Virginia "Jeanette" McDaniel McSwain, of Conyers, Georgia (originally from St. Augustine, Florida) went home to be with the Lord on May 16, 2013, at the age of 83, after an extended illness.   Jeanette was an active member of her church, enjoyed reading the Bible, and teaching Sunday School.  Jeanette was a true Christian in knowledge and example.  Jeanette was a joyful person often singing or whistling as she worked.  She was a beautiful and fashionable woman; enjoying sewing for herself and her children.  She was a very good cook and baker. She loved walking on the beach, sunbathing, and eating catfish and shrimp.  God blessed our family when he gave her to us. Jeanette attended St. Johns River Junior College, in Palatka, FL.  She worked in the family construction business in St. Augustine, Florida, and had the first pre-kindergarten school.  She later moved back to Georgia and co-founded Jet Food stores, based in Sandersville, GA.   After retirement she lived with her husband in Conyers, GA. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Darlene Stembridge-Deuschle; her grandson, Sgt. Bryan Joseph Tutten;  her parents, Grady and Mattie McDaniel; sisters, Jan Walton, Mary Hilda McDaniel; and brother, PFC Bobby McDaniel.

Survivors include her husband, Clarence McSwain of Conyers, GA; her daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia Jeanne Smallwood and Hoyt J. Obit - Barbara Mote

Barbara R. Mote of Covington, passed away May 15, 2013, at the age of 77. She enjoyed reading, spending time outdoors, working in her yard, taking walks, and watching the Atlanta Braves. Barbara also enjoyed arts and crafts; she was a talented painter and an excellent cook. Barbara was a quiet, strong-willed, and independent woman who always believed she could handle any problem that arose. After the death of her husband eleven years ago, she single-handedly took care of several acres of property, a large fish pond, and maintenance around the house. Yet, she was always there when others needed help. She loved her family dearly, and always enjoyed traveling with her girls. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Jewell Mote; parents, Riley E. and Magnolia (Garner) McFalls; sister, Lillian Cumbie; and her brothers, J.D. McFalls, James E. McFalls, and Ralph McFalls.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and James Stephens of Atlanta, Terri and Bill Jones of Birmingham, AL; her beloved cat, Slinky; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews.

Obit - Stephen Michael Williams

Stephen Michael Williams of Covington, died May 14, 2013, at the age of 59. Stephen grew up in Lithonia and was a 1972 graduate of Lithonia High School where he played basketball. He was a dedicated employee of Georgia Power for over 30 years and also worked at his father's sawmill. He was a Harley Davidson enthusiast and often loved to ride. Stephen was a dedicated father and loving Paw Paw to his three grandsons. He was preceded in death by his father, Bill Williams.

Survivors include his daughter, Gina Williams Oeland; son and daughter-in-law, Jacob and Adrienne Rider Williams; mother, Catherine "Kaki" Williams; sisters and brothers-in-law, Deborah and Richard Duello, Sandra and Chris Weiser; grandsons, Joseph Oeland, Lincoln Oeland, and Tucker Williams; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Obit - Richard (Red) A. Davis

Richard (Red) A. Davis, age 67, passed away at his home on Taunton Road, Sunday, May 12, 2013.  Richard was born in Eatonton, GA on March 16, 1946.  He worked for Hercules for many years and recently was employed by Beaver Manufacturing.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing.  Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his parents, Braxton and Ruth Davis, and sister, Janice Carter.

 

Mr. Davis is survived by his wife of 29 years, Betty McCollough Davis of Covington; four children, Ginny (and Joe) Gregg, Laurie (and Chic) Lewis, Richie Davis, Brad (and Shannon) Davis; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild; sisters, Dot Carlson, Bonnie (and Ben) Maddox, Dixie (and Dick) Crutcher; brother, Ronnie Davis.

Linda J. Coley, 67, of Covington, passed away May 12, 2013. She was a member of the Alcovy Shrinettes and Stewart Community Church. She was a "people person", and always enjoyed being around her friends. Mrs. Coley was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother; and she loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. Allan Brannon of Conyers, passed away May 12, 2013, at the age of 76. Mr. Brannon was the first baby born in Techwood Homes, in Atlanta, and as a typical downtown Atlanta resident – he loved the Varsity! He was a devoted employee, of Atlantic Steel, and retired after 49 years of service. He loved visiting Daytona Beach and participating in the ceramics class hosted by the Newton County Senior Services. Mr. Brannon was an avid sports fan, and especially enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves. He is preceded in death by his sister, Jennene McSweegan.

Survivors include his wife, Andrea Brannon; children and their spouses, Kelly and Jeff Wright of Oxford, Laurie Ricks of Newborn, Colleen and Ben Polk of Conyers, David and Margarita Brannon of Conyers, Elizabeth Collins of Newborn; 7 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Richard Brannon of Conyers.

Winna Jean Evans

Winna Jean Evans of Covington passed away May 12, 2013 at Rockdale Medical Center.  She was 72 years of age at the time of her death.  Mrs. Evans worked in the optical business for 45 years, and was employed by Southern Optical for over 30 years.  Mrs. Evans was preceded in death by her parents, Gail and Minnie (Martin) Evans.

 

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Johnny G. Evans, Sr. of Covington; daughters and son-in-law, Eva and Eugene Cavender, Bonnie Lou Evans, all of Covington; son, Johnny Evans, Jr. of Covington; granddaughter, Ashley Evans; sisters, Hazel Fadinnes, Mary Martin, and Betty Atkins; brothers and sister in law, Bob and Doris Whiting, Buddy Whiting, Dave Whiting, Kenny Whiting, and Ernie Whiting; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Evans will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. J. Clifton Brown officiating and following in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service, from 11:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M.

Obit - Helen B. Kirkpatrick

Helen B. Kirkpatrick, of Covington, passed away May 3, 2013 at the age of 85.  She worked in the local textile mills for over 46 years and was a member of Gaithers United Methodist Church.   She enjoyed gardening, quilting, crocheting and cooking.  Mrs. Kirkpatrick was preceded in death by her sons, Morris Fincher, Randy Fincher;  parents, Wilburn Ashburry and Birtie Mae (Carlan) Brock; sisters, Tallie Kittle, Dixie Brock, Lottie Ballard, Irene Wilbanks; brothers, Deward Brock, John Brock.

 

Survivors include her husband, Walker Sams Kirkpatrick, Sr. of Covington; daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Shawn McPherson of Conyers, Lisa and Fritz Amerin of Covington; son and daughters-in-law, Walker, Jr. and Linda Kirkpatrick of Covington, Karen Fincher of Oxford; 9 grandchildren;  14 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Grace and Herman Goddard of Covington; several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services from Mrs. Kirkpatrick will be held Monday, May 6, 2013, 1:00 PM, at Gaithers United Methodist Church, 1375 Newton Factory Bridge Road, in Covington, with Rev. Brad Rutledge officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington, Sunday, May 5, 2013 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 9:00 PM.

Carolyn Nelson of Oxford, passed away May 2, 2013, at the age of 74. Mrs. Nelson enjoyed fishing, playing bingo, visiting her friends, spending time outdoors, and admiring her hummingbirds. She adored her family, and loved spending time with them. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Nelson; parents, John Daniel and Willie Mae (Spires) Yancey; and her brother, Max Yancey.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Brad and Lisa Nelson of Covington, Bruce and Tracy Nelson of Mansfield; grandchildren, Jeff and Dana Knight of Oxford, Joshua Nelson of Covington, Hannah Nelson of Mansfield; niece, Marilyn and Ben Waller of Rhine, GA; and two great-nieces. 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Nelson will be held Saturday, May 4, 2013, 4:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Todd Howell and Rev. Ben Waller officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, two hours prior to her service, from 2:00-4:00.

Obit - Hazel Harris Parish

Hazel Harris Parish, 88, of Covington, joined her Heavenly Father, May 1, 2013, peacefully at Abbey Hospice while surrounded by her family. Miss Hazel was a lifelong resident of Covington and member of the First Baptist Church. She worked briefly, but when her children came along, the decision was made to be a fulltime wife and mother. You could often find Miss Hazel sitting on Floyd Street greeting everyone that came by! Miss Hazel was loved, and will be missed by her family and friends. Her favorite saying was, "I have had a wonderful life, and God is so good!" She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Otis A. Parish, Jr.; her parents, Ras and Fannie (Filyaw) Harris; and her sisters, Helen Patrick and Jackie Durden.

 Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and David Ellis, Patti and Larry King, all of Covington; grandchildren, Tiffany and Bobby Ray, Nick and Ashley Ellis, John and Katy King, Ryan and Heather King; great-grandchildren, Jaxon Ray, Camden Ray, MaKayla King, Austin King; brothers and sister-in-law, Neal Harris of Covington, James and Margaret Harris of Monroe; many nieces and nephews.

Obit - George (Skeet) Harper

George (Skeet) Harper of Porterdale, passed away April 30, 2013, at the age of 93. Mr. Harper worked for Bibb Manufacturing Company for 20 years, before retiring from Hercules, in 1983, after 14 years of service. He was Past Master of the Pace Masonic Lodge #558 F.&A.M., in Porterdale, where he was a member for 60 years. In addition, he was a faithful member of County Line Baptist Church. Mr. Harper enjoyed gardening, riding through the country visiting his old home place, visiting the mountains, and traveling to the beach. He loved coaching baseball, and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. Mr. Harper was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was loved, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Susie (Jones) Harper; son and daughter-in-law, George Robert and Genell Harper; grandson, George Daniel (Danny) Shiver; parents, George Thomas and Martha (Durden) Harper; sisters, Florence Moon, Lottie Freeman; brothers, Lewis Harper, Clifford Harper, Rosser Harper, and Thomas Harper.

 

Survivors include his daughters, Nettie Sue Harper, Rosalyn Shiver, both of Covington; sons and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Rita Harper of Buckhead, Keith Harper of Covington; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, L.C. (Bud) and Peggy Harper of Covington; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
