Thomas "TD" Bunn, 57, of Covington, died October 30, 2013. He enjoyed fishing, spending time at his hunting club, and being around his family and friends. TD was preceded in death by his mother, Hilda (Herrington) Bunn.

 

Survivors include his wife, Tammy Bunn; daughter, Tracy Faulkner of Oxford; granddaughters, Tiffany Faulkner, Brittany Faulkner, Madison Faulkner; great-grandchildren, Jayda Pritchett and Landon Pritchett; father and his wife, Boyce and Barbara Bunn of Covington; sisters, Sue Lackey of Shady Dale, Faye Sheppard of Covington, Marie Jenkins of Monticello; brother, Tony Bunn of Conyers; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

 

Funeral Services for TD will be held Saturday, November 2, 2013, 11:00 AM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Robbie Norman officiating, and interment following in Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery, in Covington. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, November 1, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to assist with final expenses.

Obit - Mildred "Millie" Rebecca Robinson

Mildred "Millie" Rebecca Robinson of Covington, passed away October 29, 2013, at the age of 76. Mrs. Robinson was a people person and had a very nurturing personality. She enjoyed shopping, and loved working in the yard taking care of her flowers. She was loved, and will be missed by her family and friends.

 

Survivors include her husband, Raymond Robinson, of Covington; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and James Fogg of McDonough; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy K. McDade and Joyce Thomas of Jackson; grandchildren, Kayla Fogg, Ryan Fogg, Bryant McDade, Brent McDade; great-grandchildren, Grayson McDade, Trinity McDade, Lauren McDade; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Carlene Jones; several nieces and nephews.

Obit Sandra G. Head

Sandra G. Head, of Buford, passed away on October 24, 2013, at the age of 68.  Mrs. Head was a member of Snapping Shoals United Methodist Church.  She worked at RD Head Elementary School where she was known by the children as the "Ice Cream Lady".  The children at the school brought much joy to her life, and she brought joy to them as well.  She especially loved the special needs children.  Mrs. Head had a great sense of humor and a sweet smile that would light up a room.  She loved her dogs, Sally, Enzo and Izzy. She was loved and will be missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Martha Piper; sisters, Charlotte Wilson, Ada Phillips; brother, Fred C. Piper, Jr.

Betty Palmer, of Covington, passed away October 25, 2013, at the age of 73.   Mrs. Palmer enjoyed sewing, and she loved to travel.

Obit James "Jim" Dial

James "Jim" Dial, of Covington, passed away October 25, 2013, at the age of 50.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Covington where he enjoyed passing out bulletins at his special door.  Jim loved his family and church family dearly.  He was the first special education student to graduate from Newton County High School, and he worked as a mail clerk for the Newton County Courthouse for 11 years.  Jim was a happy person and inspired everyone who knew him.  He was preceded in death by his father, Cleon Dial.

Obit - Andy Hand


Andy Hand, 88, of Conyers, passed away October 18, 2013. Mr. Hand was a veteran of the United States Army, proudly served his country during World War II, and retired after 27 years of dedicated service. He was a faithful member of Grace Pointe Church of the Nazarene, in Loganville. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 29 years before retirement. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, collecting trains and model cars, and traveling to the beach and the mountains. More than anything, he enjoyed playing games with his family. Mr. Hand often attended antique car shows, and especially admired the 1930's and 40's cars. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, granddaddy, great-granddaddy, brother and friend. Mr. Hand was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Lina May (Huddleston) Hand; son, Alan Douglas Hand; parents, Henry Hale and Eloise (Hawkins) Hand; and his sister, Martha Howard.

 

Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Mark Brian Hand of Conyers, Jeffrey Terrell and Mendy Hand of Oxford; Yvonne Hand of McDonough; grandchildren, Tasha Going, Jessica Hand, Rebecca Garner, Brian Hand, Michael Hand, Justin Hand; great-grandchildren, Austin, Trinity, Destiny, Caitlyn, KayLee, Devin, Dillon, Nicholas; brother and sister-in-law, David and Mary Hand of Murfreesboro, TN; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

Graveside Services for Mr. Hand will be held Tuesday, October 22, 2013, 2:00 PM, at Lawnwood Memorial Park, in Covington, with Rev. Paul Canen officiating. Lorine Plunkett of Covington, passed away October 17, 2013, at the age of 73. Mrs. Plunkett shared her love for music by playing the piano and singing at various churches throughout the years. She loved to cook and entertain her family and friends. She was loved, and will be missed by all who knew her. Mrs. Plunkett was preceded in death by her husband, William Plunkett; and her parents, Dallas and Edith (Clay) Maddox.

Obit - Nannette (Nan) Hollingsworth Franklin

Nan Hollingsworth Franklin of Covington, passed away October 16, 2013, at the age of 75. Ms. Franklin was born and raised in Covington, and was the captain of her Newton High School basketball team. She never judged others, but instead she accepted them as they were. This led to her creating lifelong, loyal friendships everywhere she lived. Ms. Franklin loved her family dearly, was blessed to have a close relationship with her sisters, and was her daughters' greatest cheerleader. She was a gracious and caring lady who will be forever missed by her family and friends. Ms. Franklin was preceded in death by her son, John Robert Franklin, Jr.; parents, William Madison and Ella Mae Hollingsworth; twin sister, Annette Hollingsworth; brother, W.M. Hollingsworth; brother-in-law, Howard Mathis; and her nephew, Brian Mathis.

Obit - Henry John Daniecki

Henry John Daniecki, 88, of Covington, passed away at his home, October 15, 2013, following a long illness with dementia. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having proudly served his country as a gunner on the USS McClanahan #615, for three years, during World War II. Mr. Daniecki was born in East Chicago, Indiana, and grew up on a farm in Knowlton, Wisconsin. He worked on the farm in his early years, and joined the Navy when he was just 17. He met his wife, Alice, in Holly, Michigan, and the two married in 1963. That same year, Mr. Daniecki opened Uncle John's Used Furniture Store, in Holly, MI. In 1972, he moved to Covington to escape the cold winters; and in 1973, he started Reliable Plumbing and Heating Co., where he worked for 26 years before retiring. He loved this small town, and wanted to serve the people therein.  Mr. Daniecki had a passion for people, animals, dancing and listening to polka music. He was a member of Epiphany Lutheran Church for 38 years. He loved telling jokes and making people smile. Mr. Daniecki never met a stranger, and was always willing to help the less fortunate. He always introduced himself as "Happy Henry"; and to his wife, he was her "Sailor Man". He loved the simple things in life, and his family will forever cherish the values he taught and the love he shared. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Daniecki; grandson, Dustin Daniecki; mother, Pauline (Marko) Vercimak; father, Edward Daniecki; sister, Lou Ogle; and his brothers, Ed Daniecki and Tom Daniecki.

Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Alice (Winde) Daniecki; daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Joe Beeco of Monroe; son and daughter-in-law, John and Raygina Daniecki of Covington; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Ronald Vercimak of Green Bay, WI; several nieces and nephews, and many close friends.

Dale Walter Townson

Dale Walter Townson of Social Circle passed away October 13, 2013 at Abbey Hospice.  He was 63 years of age at the time of his death.  Mr. Townson loved hunting, fishing, racing, and NASCAR.  He also enjoyed traveling to the mountains.  Mr. Townson was a member of the Golden Fleece Lodge #6.  He was preceded in death by his father, Cladie Bobby Townson; and brother, Delan Townson.

Danny Herring, 55, of Newborn, passed away October 13, 2013. Danny enjoyed watching horse races, riding his Harley, and was always ready to smoke meats to serve a crowd. He was an exceptional pool player, but above all, he cherished his time with his children. Danny was a man of faith, and loved serving and guiding in the Celebrate Recovery Ministry. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Danielle Herring.

Obit - Edward R. Needham

Edward R. Needham of Covington, passed away October 6, 2013, at the age of 87. Mr. Needham was a talented Chemical Engineer. He taught himself computer programming, and wrote the production tracking software for Beaver Manufacturing Company, which he owned and operated for 43 years. From the time he started the company, in 1971, it has grown every year and still remains strong. In 1989, the Governor of Georgia presented him the Spirit of Business Award. He enjoyed flower gardening and building radios, was able to repair anything electrical, including organs, and even built his family's first TV from scratch. Mr. Needham lived in Matanzas, Cuba, from 1955-1960, while employed by Cuban Rayon Company. He was a seasoned world traveler, and visited many South American countries, including Venezuela, Columbia, Brazil, and Peru during his business travels. Mr. Needham enjoyed boating, and owned several boats over the years despite not being able to swim. He was a very compassionate and community-oriented individual. He believed in encouraging students while they were young, and teaching them hard work and perseverance would allow them to achieve anything. He and his wife, Nonie, received the R.O. Arnold Award in 2008. Mr. Needham was a member of Covington First United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Vestina (Broom) Needham.

Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Lenora (Nonie) Needham; children and their spouses, Edward W. Needham of Covington, Kathy Needham Rhodes and her husband, Robert, of Social Circle, Bryan A. Needham of Oxford; grandchildren, Seth Rhoades, Judson Rhoades, Charles Needham, Katy Rhoades, Krissy Rhoades, Rachael Needham; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Needham will be held Wednesday, October 9, 2013, 2:00 PM, at the First United Methodist Church, in Covington, with Rev. Dr. Douglas Gilreath, Rev. Jan McCoy, and Rev. Dr. Don Martin officiating, and interment following in Covington City Cemetery. Obit - Frank Julian Davis

Frank Julian Davis of Oxford, passed away October 6, 2013, at the age of 80. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Covington, the Oxford Lions Club, was presently serving as a City Councilman in Oxford, and was Treasurer of the Oxford Historical Society for many years. He was active in community service projects, and was involved in building the first bridge on Oxford Trail. Mr. Davis enjoyed fishing and traveling, but more than anything he cherished the opportunity to serve others. He helped others fulfill their dreams, and if there was anything he could do to help someone – he would do it! Mr. Davis loved his family dearly, and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Obit - Virginia (Jenny) Price Durden

Virginia (Jenny) Price Durden, 87, of Covington, passed away October 5, 2013. Mrs. Durden was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Covington. She was a native of Monticello, where she was a star basketball player in high school. She lived in Covington for the past 58 years. She attended Mercer University, and retired from Ace Hardware Distribution Center where she was Office Manager. She enjoyed traveling, bowling, golf and was an avid Braves baseball fan. Mrs. Durden was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Hesper (Whitten) Price of Monticello.

Survivors include her husband of 66 years, W.R. (Bill) Durden; son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Lynn Durden of Covington; daughters and sons-in-law, Delaine and Bill Reeder of Augusta, Gina and Skipper Kitchens of Birmingham, AL; Susan and Bill Richey of Augusta; 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Bauman of Michigan, Merrilynn Elliott of Monticello.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Durden will be held Tuesday, October 8, 2013, 11:00 AM, at the First Baptist Church of Covington, with Rev. Ralph Meaker, Rev. Charles Reynolds, and Rev. Tim Barnes officiating, and interment following in Covington City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Monday, October 7, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church – Missions Fund, 1139 Usher Street, Covington, GA 30014.

Obit - Samuel Virgil Herring

Samuel Virgil Herring of Covington, passed away October 5, 2013, at the age of 69. Mr. Herring was a faithful member of Living Way Worship Center, in Covington. He had a desire to reach lost souls, and considered it a blessing to be a part of a Care Pastor Ministry. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, riding his bike, was an avid sports fan, loved playing practical jokes on his friends, traveling to the beach, and enjoyed going out to eat – especially to the Mexican restaurant. Mr. Herring loved his family dearly, and will be missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Irene (Sanders) Herring; sisters, Geraldine James, Berta McElreath; and his brothers, Roy Herring, Edward Herring, Ralph Herring and Bill Herring.

Survivors include his loving wife, Gail Herring of Covington; daughters and sons-in-law, Julie and Curtis Hailey of Cartersville, Heather and Clint Adamson of Jackson; sons and daughter-in-law, Scott Herring of Covington, Richard Scott and Shellie Herring of Social Circle; grandchildren, Shianne Witcher, Jake Adamson, Sam Herring, Brittany Hailey, Breana Hailey, Briley Hailey; 1 great-grandchild; sister and brother-in-law, Sara and John Peters; brothers and sister-in-law, Bobby and Kitty Herring, Jerry Herring; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Herring will be held Tuesday, October 8, 2013, 11:00 AM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Scott Herring and Pastor David Payne officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday, October 7, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.

Obit - Betty Jean Bennett

Betty Jean Bennett of Covington, passed away October 1, 2013, at the age of 78. Mrs. Bennett was a member of Porterdale Baptist Church; and enjoyed listening to televangelists, Jeff Lyles and Arnold Murray. She enjoyed cooking, flower gardening, and watching hummingbirds; but most of all she enjoyed reading her Bible. Mrs. Bennett enjoyed traveling to the mountains and the beach. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Devoe Bennett; and her parents, Horace and Lizzie Sue (Drake) Fields.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Connie Jean and Charlie Tex Evans of Mansfield; sisters and brothers-in-law, Frances and Norman Bennett, Carolyn and Stanley McDonald, all of Covington; granddaughter, Jennifer Lee Lucero; great-grandchildren, Jessica O'Byron, Jacob Lucero; several nieces and nephews.

A Graveside Service for Mrs. Bennett will be held Friday, October 4, 2013, 1:00 PM, at Lawnwood Memorial Park, in Covington, with Rev. Dickie Johnson officiating.
