Obit - Rita Ward White

Mrs. Rita Ward White, age 90, of Oxford, passed away Monday, August 25, at her home. Mrs. White was born October 18, 1923, in Statesboro, Georgia, and was the eldest daughter of Robert Lee and Florence Hendrix Ward. She grew up in a farming family in Bulloch County, Georgia, and was a graduate of Nevils High School. In 1943, she married her husband of 56 years, Darvin White. When Mr. White began working for Independent Life and Accident Insurance Company, they moved to Newton County and settled in Oxford, Georgia. While her children were very young, Mrs. White was a homemaker. She was a substitute teacher at Palmer Stone Elementary School, a grade mother and a Girl Scout troop leader. She was a member of Allen Memorial United Methodist Church for 60 years, where she joined the Manning Bible Class and served as Communion steward. After her children were older, Mrs. White worked outside the home. She worked for Belk department store for several years and for Covington Manufacturing Company for 10 years. In 1966, with the encouragement of her husband, she bought Sherwood's Flowers and Gifts. She had always been an avid gardener and enjoyed working with flowers. She never had any formal training in floral design, but had a natural artistic talent, and was a self-taught designer. As a florist, she was known for her exquisite high style arrangements and painstaking attention to detail. Mr. and Mrs. White built their business together and worked happily side by side until his death in 1998. Mrs. White continued working at Sherwood's into her eighties and always loved meeting with her many loyal customers. Mrs. White was also an excellent cook and loved cooking for her family. She enjoyed going out to restaurants and shopping with her daughter and granddaughter. She had a wonderful sense of humor, and enjoyed telling stories about her childhood in South Georgia. Mrs. White read her Bible regularly, and was always a source of great strength and comfort to her friends and family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Darvin; grandson, Hugh White; brothers, A.D. Ward, Grady Ward, Duerell Ward, R.L. Ward, Jr., Ellis Ward; and her sisters, Myrtice Ward Gerrald and Doris Ward Lanigan.

 

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Hubert and Fay White of Covington; daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Larry Sullivan of Oxford; grandchildren, Scott and Elizabeth White of Oxford, Heather and Matt McClane of Covington; Kristen Sullivan and Harry Baxley of Oxford, Justin and Heather Sullivan of Oxford, Anna White, Austin White, both of Covington; great-grandchildren, Matthew and Madison McClane, Tristan and Cole White, Emily Sullivan; sister and brother-in-law, Bobbie and Floy Thackston of Statesboro; brothers and sister-in-law, Coleman and Dolores Ward, Denver Ward, all of Statesboro; sisters-in-law, Mary White Price, Mildred Ward; as well as many nieces and nephews. Additionally, she is survived by her loving and devoted caregivers, Mary Reese, Wendy Higginbotham, Mildred Zackery, Barbara Cobb, Brenda Glanton, Shirley Reese, Ann Mitchell and Kristina Masiello.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. White will be held Wednesday, August 27, 2014, 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Max Vincent and Rev. Tom Johnson officiating, and entombment following in Memory Chapel Mausoleum at Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, two hours prior to the service, from 1:00 – 3:00 PM. Obit - Frances Louise Thomason

Louise Thomason of Covington, passed away August 24, 2014, at the age of 84. Ms. Thomason was an active member of New Life Praise Center, in Covington, and was a dedicated employee of Lithonia Lighting for 38 years. Following her work at Lithonia Lighting, she dedicated herself to caring for handicapped children. Ms. Thomason was a giving lady, and constantly gave of her time to help those less fortunate. She was loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Preceding her in death was her brother, Thomas McCord.

Louise Hall

Louise Hall, of Covington, passed away August 21, 2014 at Newton Medical Center.  She was 64 years of age at the time of her death.  Mrs. Hall loved her family and spending time with them.  She especially enjoyed being with her grandchildren and treated them as if they were her own.  She loved to sing in the choir, travel, and was a loving mother and wife for 44 years.

Mrs. Hall was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny James and Carrie (Allen) Nelson; sister, Inel Nelson; brothers, Elbert Nelson, MacArthur Nelson, and Melvin Nelson.

 

Survivors include her husband, Rosevelt Nelson of Covington; daughters, Sonya Hall of Stockbridge, Michelle Hall of Covington; son Timothy Hall of Gwinnett County; grandchildren, Alexis Lee, Gabrielle Sanders, Leyla Hall, Jeremiah Hall, Josiah Hall; sisters, Alma Truitt, Easter Bell Moore; brothers and sister-in-law, Delander and Cheryl Nelson, Johnny James Nelson, Jr.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Hall will be held Wednesday, August 27, 2014, 11:00 AM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Manuel Whitfield officiating.  Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday, August 26, from 7:00 – 8:00 PM.  Following the service the family will receive friends at the Holiday Inn Express on Access Road for a time of fellowship and remembering.

Obit - Charles "Chic" Gilsten

Charles "Chic" Gilsten of Covington, passed away August 21, 2014, at the age of 71. Mr. Gilsten attended Miami Dade College, in Florida. Following his parents death, he operated the Monarch Wine Co., which they had founded in 1960, and was known for their King Cotton Peach Wine. Additionally, Mr. Gilsten worked for himself in commercial real estate. He enjoyed going to Lake Lanier and racing his speed boat which could reach speeds of 115 MPN. Mr. Gilsten took pride in taking care of himself, and did so by working out and eating healthy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Renee (Prozan) Gilsten.

 

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Ruby (Wendy) Gilsten; children and their spouses, Charlie Newton Gilsten and his wife, Heather Danielle Gilsten, Ardinell Renee "Nell" Marie and her husband, Gene Marie, all of Springfield, MO, Natalie Wynn Gilsten of St. Louis, MO, Michael Johnathon Gilsten of Covington, GA; and his grandson, Quentin Colter Bean of Springfield, MO.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Gilsten will be held Sunday, August 24, 2014, 1:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Adam Cooper officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, August 23, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Interment will be held in Memorial Gardens Cemetery, in Buffalo, MO, at a later date.

Obit - Betty Sue Wallace Christian

Betty Sue Wallace Christian of Covington, passed away August 18, 2014, at the age of 89. She was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church, in Covington. Mrs. Christian was a loving wife and mother, and enjoyed watching her sons play sports. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Christian; son, Greg Christian; and her parents, Julian and Flora Belle (Horsley) Wallace.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Ellen Christian Helms; sons and daughters-in-law, Frank Timothy "Tim" and Phyllis Christian of Johns Creek, Wallace Edward and Toni Christian of Ellaville; grandchildren, Dawn Helms Dalton, Frank Lamar Christian, Elizabeth "Libby" Christian Allen, Kendall Anne Christian Stowell; 9 great-grandchildren; brother, Edwin Wallace of Jacksonville, FL; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Jimmy Larry Ivey

Larry Ivey, age 73, of Monticello, passed away August 17, 2014. Mr. Ivey proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was a dedicated employee of Newton County for 30 years. Mr. Ivey enjoyed fishing and hunting, as well as dirt track racing and working on cars. He was loved, and will be missed by his family and friends. Mr. Ivey was preceded in death by his daughter, Kelly Cofer; parents, Simmie and Glantis (Floyd) Ivey; and his brother, Chalton Ivey.

 

Survivors include his sister, Ruby Jean Bates of Covington; former wife and caregiver, Mildred G. Ivey; Mildred's children, Michelle Long, Lisa Shelley, Mark Long, Steve Long; niece, Wanda Ivey; nephew, Derek Ivey; and caregiver, Crystal Thomas.

Obit - Hugh Newsome

Hugh Newsome, age 86, of Covington, passed away August 15, 2014. Mr. Newsome proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a native of Wilkes County, but has been a resident of Newton County for more than 70 years. Mr. Newsome was an agent for Kentucky Central Life Insurance Company for over 20 years. Following his insurance career, he became a real estate agent/broker, for Conner Smith Realty, where he worked for 15 years. He was always thrilled to work with first-time homebuyers. He was an avid golfer who started playing golf at the age of 6, and continuing playing well into his 80's. His coffee shop buddies, who he met with daily, except Sundays, were an important part of his life. He was loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Mr. Newsome was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Bessie (Williamson) Newsome.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Newsome; daughter and son-in-law, Gayle and Kevin Howell of Covington; sons and daughter-in-law, Phillip and Sherry Newsome of Covington, Bob Newsome of Conyers; grandchildren, Kimberly and Jon Wilber, Kraig Howell, Caine Howell, Joshua Newsome, Matthew Newsome; great-granddaughters, Katelin Wilber, Katheryn Wilber; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Terry McWaters

Terry McWaters of Snellville, died August 7, 2014, at the age of 59. He was a 1974 graduate of Newton High, where he played football and was quarterback his junior and senior year. Terry was an insurance agent for 30+ years, most recently having worked for Country Financial, but several other companies previously. He enjoyed playing golf and tennis, vacationing with his family to the beach and the mountains, and even enjoyed a cigar from time to time! Terry was a devoted father, and served as his daughters' basketball coach for years. He was a loving husband, son, father, grandfather and brother. Terry never met a stranger, and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles McWaters; and his mother-in-law, Nancy J. Clark.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 38 years, Patty McWaters; daughters and son-in-law, Charity McWaters of Snellville, Cristin and Billy Myers of Loganville; grandson, William Charles "Will" Myers; parents, Mary Alice and Byron Williams of Oxford; sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Sammy Williams of Oxford; brother, Robert T. Obit - Ruth Durham Lucas Wilson

Ruth Durham Lucas Wilson, age 91, passed away Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at her residence at Morningside Assisted Living in Conyers, GA.  She was born February 15, 1923, in Louisa, Virginia.  Mrs. Wilson worked as a Secretary at the Pentagon during World War II, and later she studied to be a nurse and received her LPN Diploma.  As the wife of Lt. Col. Lee R. Lucas, she lived in Canada, Iran and many different states in the U.S. Mrs. Wilson enjoyed sharing stories of her extensive travels to many foreign countries. After retirement, she and her family returned to her home state of Virginia where she lived until she married her late husband, William Farmer Wilson, and moved to Conyers, GA. She enjoyed oil painting as a pastime and leaves behind many beautiful paintings.

She is survived by two daughters, Lin Maines of Durham, NC, Vicki Lucas Tilton and her husband, John Tilton of San Diego, CA; grandchildren, Lucas and Nicole Myers, Casey Myers, Joren Myers, all of San Diego, CA, Shawn and Mary Beth Maines, Eric and Cindy Maines, all of Orange County, NC; great-grandsons, Joshua and Jacob Maines of Orange County, NC; sister, Marjorie Durham Baker of Mineral, VA; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 16, 2014, 2:00 PM, at Conyers Presbyterian Church, with Pastor David Rogers officiating, and a reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to her family's home church, which was damaged by an earthquake (Gilboa was the epicenter), Gilboa Christian Church Building Fund, c/o Joe Leslie, P.O. Box 214, Mineral, VA 23117.  Interment will be held in Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, VA, at a later date.

David Hudgins

David Hudgins, age 76, of Oxford, passed away August 13, 2014.  He was the owner and founder of Mableton Supply Company.  In addition he was a Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner and was very active in the VFW and American Legion.  Mr. Hudgins was devoted to his wife for 51 years and will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Hudgins; daughter, Teresa H. Hall; parents, Ralph N. and Mary Magdalene (White) Hudgins; and brother and sister-in-law, Bobbie and Larry Hudgins.

 

Mr. Hudgins is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, David Keith and Rebecca Hudgins of Oxford; grandchildren, Johnathan David Hall, Matthew Shane Hall, Mary Christina Thompson; great-grandchildren, Carlie Hall, Emily Hall, Summer Thompson, Alyssa Byrd, Mikayla Kell; sisters, Anne Spence of Steinhatchee, FL, and Marsha Kersey of Live Oak, FL; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Cryptside Service for Mr. Hudgins will be held Saturday, August 16, 2014, 2:00 PM, at Memory Chapel Mausoleum in Lawnwood Memorial Park with Toney Senator officiating.  The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Friday, August 15, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.  

 

 

Gene Hubbard

Gene Hubbard, age 77, passed away August 14, 2014, at his home in Covington.  Mr. Hubbard enjoyed hunting, collecting guns, and going to gun shows.  He was a very giving person and would help anyone who needed help.  Mr. Hubbard will be remembered as a man who adored Jane, his wife of 55 years, and loved his family.   He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Birtie (Ashmore) Hubbard.

 

Survivors include his wife, Jane Hubbard of Covington; daughters and son-in-law, Cynthia and Daniel Chavez of Conyers, Bonnie Fambrough of Covington; sons and daughter-in-law, John Veal of Covington; Richard and Leah Hubbard, Kevin Hubbard, all of Florida; 12 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Geneva and Richard Brown of Scottsboro, AL; as well as nieces and a nephew.

Obit - Norma Jean McCord

Norma McCord of Social Circle, passed away August 11, 2014, at the age of 73. Ms. McCord loved the Lord and cherished her time in His Word. She enjoyed writing poems, singing gospel music and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sidney Freeman and Louise Helen (Rice) McCord; sister, Barbara Banks; and her brother, Sidney McCord.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Helen Shelnutt of Social Circle; sons and daughters-in-law, Sean Kelly of Marietta, Doug and Michelle McMillian of Covington, Sam Shelnutt of Social Circle, Joseph and Tammy Shelnutt of Covington; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Shirley McCord of Newborn; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Obit - Paul (Winkie) Stansell

Paul (Winkie) Stansell, age 46, of Conyers, passed away August 11, 2014. Paul was an avid University of Miami sports fan and enjoyed stock car racing. In addition, he enjoyed swimming and taking gambling trips with his mother, Peggy. Paul cherished his friendships, was very family oriented and had a goofy, but fun-loving personality. He often played punch buggy with his beloved daughters, Lacey and Erin. Paul was loved by so many and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Jean Buchanan

Jean Buchanan, age 71, passed away August 11, 2014 at her home in Oxford.  Mrs. Buchanan was a very giving Christian lady who loved the Lord and attending church.  She enjoyed going to the beach and being in the sun.  She also enjoyed planting flowers to give to others, baking cakes, and going to yard sales with her sisters.  Her greatest joy was her daughters and their families.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Buchanan; daughter, Michele Spell; parents, William and Frances (Moore) Gresham; sisters, Kathy Ponder and Judy Anderson.

Joan Presley

Joan Presley, age 77, of Conyers, passed away August 9, 2014.  Mrs. Presley loved writing poetry and singing to her grandchildren while they were outside playing.  She had a strong faith in God and a special love for gospel music.  Mrs. Presley will be remembered for her great sense of humor.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Joel Edmond and Ellen Elizabeth (Hammond) Neely; and former spouse, Mark (Buck) Presley.

 

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Ronald Hembree of Covington; sons and daughter-in-law, Michael Presley of Conyers, Danny and Karen Presley of Covington; grandchildren, Tonya Burnett, Danelle Breedlove, Walker Presley, Jed Presley, Hailey Robbins, Nick Hembree; 7 great-grandchildren; sisters, Tina Sullivan, Sara Neely, Elsie Johnson; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Presley will be held Monday, August 11, 2014, 2:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington.  Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home two hours prior to the service, from 12:00 Noon – 2:00 PM.

Inez Gober of Covington, passed away August 7, 2014, at the age of 89.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Joann and Mike Carver; grandchildren, Jeff Donahue, Matt Donahue, Robin Harrison, Jason Gober; as well as several great-grandchildren.

 

A Memorial Graveside Service will be held Sunday, August 10, 2014, 3:00 PM, at Covington City Cemetery, with Dr. Alan Posey officiating.

 

William W. Smith, Jr.

William W. Smith, Jr., of Covington, passed away on August 7, 2014, at the age of 85.  He was a faithful member of Greater Grace Church in Covington, where he served as an elder.  Mr. Smith was retired from Dart Container, where he was a truck driver for 20 years.  He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and volunteering his time to help those in need.  Mr. Smith loved people and he never met a stranger.  He was loved and will be missed by a host of family and friends.  Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Lula and William Smith, and sisters, Ann Morris, Ruby Jones, and Betty McFeren.

 

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Gladys Smith; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Marvin Rhear of Cumming; sons and daughters-in-law, Gerald and Pam Smith, Ricky and Patricia Smith, all of Conyers, and Donald and Barbara Smith of Covington; grandchildren, Lisa Jillson of Vero Beach, FL, Suzanne Smith of Satsuma, AL, Jessica Salmon of Covington, Krystal Smith of Mansfield, Katie Seymour of Milledgeville, and Brian Smith of Conyers; 4 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. 

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Smith will be held Sunday, August 10, 2014, 2:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington.  Pastor Winston Menzies and Pastor Doug Nelms will be officiating with interment to follow in New Covington Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Saturday, August 9, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.  Flowers are accepted or donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 1684 Barnett Shoals Road, Athens, GA  30605.

Anne Fincher of Oxford, passed away August 5, 2014, at the age of 85. She was a loving mother and grandmother. In her early years, she enjoyed cooking for family gatherings. Mrs. Fincher was a hard worker, always providing for her family, and making sure they had everything they needed. She enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves. Mrs. Fincher was loved by many, and will be missed by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Olin Fincher; parents, James Powell and Martha Catherine (Guinn) Mitcham; and her brother, James P. Mitcham.

 

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Fred and Sandra Christian of Oxford, Jimmy and June Christian of Greensboro, Billy and Denise Christian of Clarkesville, TN, Bobby and Susan Christian of Covington; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Fincher will be held Thursday, August 7, 2014, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Dr. Jeff Perkins officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 – 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a church or charity of one's choice.

Ms. Ochoa was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, who loved her family dearly and cherished her time with them. Basil Rigney of Snellville, passed away August 2, 2014, at the age of 79. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Middle Tennessee State College and his Master's in Music Education from the University of Georgia. Mr. Rigney owned and operated Great Republic Insurance Agency in the early 80's. In the summer of 1985, he served as the music instructor and director of Jazz Ensemble and Symphonic Band at Governor's Honors Program, in Valdosta. He served as band director for many schools across the state, with the majority being in Newton County. Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Rigney was awarded 'Star Teacher' at Newton County High School, received a Certificate of Distinction from the Governor's Honor Program and was a member of Phi Beta Mu – a bandmaster fraternity. He was loved by his family, as well as his students, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Stephen Rigney; and his parents, James Isaac and Maymie Rigney.

 

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Gloria Willis Rigney; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Tracie Rigney; grandchildren, Brittany, Mackenzie and Maci Rigney, Alex Gable, Julia and Stephen Rigney; great-grandson, Emory; brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Ingrid Rigney, Bruce and Alice Rigney; niece, Scheryl; nephew, Dennis and his wife, Diane; great-niece and nephews, Kristen, David and Ken.

Russell Fields

Russell Fields, age 77, of Covington, passed away August 1, 2014.  Mr. Fields was employed by Dart Containers, formerly known as Sweetheart Plastics, for 28 years.  He was a member of County Line Baptist Church.  He enjoyed collecting coins and reading.  Mr. Fields was a family man, as his family always came first.  He loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  Mr. Fields was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Martin Fields; and parents, William David and Sara (Ellis) Fields.

 

Survivors include his children, Linda Head of Monticello, Angela Fields Parker, Keith Fields and his wife, Angela, all of Covington; grandchildren, Jayson Head, Mike Head, Ashley Parker, Amber Ogles, C.J. Parker, Cecily Parker, Casey Fields, Heather Sargent; great-grandchildren, Molly Head, Cameron Ogles, Chase Echols, Lily Ogles, Layla Echols, Evelyn Shepard, Harliey Sargent; as well as  nieces, Judy, Peggy, and Debbie.

Obit - John David Buffa

John David Buffa of Covington died July 29, 2014, at age 58. In 1974, John graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Atlanta and was a 1980 graduate of Georgia Tech where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Industrial Management. He retired as a Systems Analyst from Home Depot. His interests included space exploration and Atlanta Falcons football. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Lettie Buffa of Atlanta.

 

Surviving are sisters Jill Buffa of Decatur and Judy Buffa Ford of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.

 

A private memorial service was held by his family. Contributions may be made to The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation, Mail Code: ASF-1, Kennedy Space Center, FL 32899 in his memory.
