Eddie Lou (Granny) Howard

Eddie Lou "Granny" Howard of Conyers, passed away May 30, 2016, at the age of 87.  A God-fearing woman, Mrs. Howard was a very active member of Community Church of Christ, which became Apostolic Community Church, since 1953.  She retired from Pacific Uniform in 1993 after 37 years of service.  She loved children and had 24 foster children come through her home, four of whom she actually raised.  Mrs. Howard had a green thumb and enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening.  Prior to her death Mrs. Howard, along with two of her daughters, was proud to be the matriarch of five generations.  She will be remembered as a wonderful and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.  Mrs. Howard was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Trummie (Still) Thompson.

 

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Kenneth and Mary (Mickey) W. Howard , Gloria Johnson, Annie and Ronnie Davis, Paul, Jr., and Gwen Howard, all of Covington, Rosie and Joe Patterson of Conyers; 15 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Dill of Lincolnton; brother, Billy Thompson of Loganville; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Howard will be held Friday, June 3, 2016, 2:00 PM, at Apostolic Community Church, 2094 Highway 81 South, in Covington, with Pastor Robert Nash, Dr. Jerry Patterson, Pastor Michael Patterson and Rev. Joseph Hardigree officiating.  Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  Friends may visit with the family Thursday, June 2, from 4:00 – 9:00 PM at the church. 

Dustin Scott "Bubba" Crooms

Dustin Scott "Bubba" Crooms of Covington, passed away May 29, 2016, at 18 years of age.   A 2016 graduate of Alcovy High School, Dustin worked for East Georgia Recovery.  He was an avid Georgia football and drag racing fan.  Dustin was fun loving, always smiling, and will be remembered for his great sense of humor.

 

Survivors include his mother, Gina (David) Davis of Monroe; father, Scott (Melanie) Crooms of Covington; sisters, Shelby Crooms, Brittany Crooms, Autumn Wisner, Ansley Crowe, Amanda Davis, Amber Davis, Carleamae Payton Jackson; brother, Dylan Paul Jackson; maternal grandmother, Sandra (Tom) Hilley; maternal grandfather, Randall (Christine) Harper; paternal grandmother, Kathy (Jim) Decosse; paternal grandfather, Thomas (Myra) Crooms; niece, Na'ilah; nephews, Logan, Niam, Jr; and soon-to-be-born, Christian.

 

A Funeral Service for Dustin will be held Friday, June 3, 2016, 2:00 PM, at Solid Rock Baptist Church, 8111 Brown Bridge Road, Covington, with Pastor Mike Franklin and Justin Long officiating.  Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  Friends may join the family for visitation at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Thursday, June 2, from 4:00 – 8:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers the family has requested that a love offering be made to help take care of funeral expenses.

Vickie DuBose

Vickie DuBose of Covington, passed away May 29, 2016 at the age of 62.  Vickie enjoyed cooking for her family, making cakes, country and gospel music, and sitting on the front porch.  She loved spending time outside and working with her flowers.  Vickie always put others before herself and cherished the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Frances Harrison; grandmother, Carrie Lou Mobley; and mother-in-law, Ileta DuBose.

James Edwards

James P. Edwards of Covington passed away May 26, 2016, at the age of 88. Mr. Edwards was a member of High Point Baptist Church, for 67 years, where he served as a Deacon and the Sunday School Director. He proudly served his country with the U.S Army, and he retired from Lithonia Lighting after 50 years of service. In addition, he was a member of the Golden Fleece Masonic Lodge #6, in Covington and the Newton County Masonic Square Compass Club. He was a big Atlanta Braves fan. Preceding him in death were his parents, Edgar Pierce and Edna Geneva Edwards; sister, Patricia Alice Edwards.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 67 years, Scottie Edwards; daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and John Tomlin, Tamie and Greg Zechman all of Covington; grandchildren and their spouses, Misty and Tom Richards, Ashley and Daniel Malcom, Brooke Tomlin; great-grandchildren, Cole Richards, Lane Malcom, Bo Malcom; sister, Betty Tuggle; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Hollis Morris

Hollis L. Morris of Conyers passed away May 24, 2016, at the age of 75. Most recently Mr. Morris was employed with Golden State Foods, where he worked for 15 years. Prior to Golden State Foods, he worked for Coca-Cola, for 10 years, and M&M Appliance, in Lithonia, for 5 years. He was a simple man who appreciated the simple things in life. Mr. Morris enjoyed fishing and working in his vegetable garden. A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Preceding him in death were his parents, Lester Lee and Martha Louise Morris.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Peggy Morris; sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Angela Morris, Matthew and Roxanne Morris; grandchildren, Matthew, Jr., Jessica, Cassey, Austian, Marissa, Makayla; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Phillip Morris, Charles Morris; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Obit - James "Jimmy" Lamar Pound

James "Jimmy" Lamar Pound, 85, of Covington, GA, passed away at his home, May 25, 2016, surrounded by his family. Jimmy was born March 8, 1931, in Atlanta, to John Howard and Mae (Hill) Pound. He graduated from Columbus High in 1949, and furthered his education at Auburn University where he graduated in 1953. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Jimmy retired after a successful 30-year business career in sales and management in the newspaper industry. In retirement, he owned and operated a dry-cleaning business with three locations in Covington. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, for 25 years, and an Auxiliary volunteer at Piedmont Newton Hospital for several years.

 

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Glenda Pound; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Rick Heebner of Greensboro; son and daughter-in-law, James "Bud" Lamar, Jr., and Terri Pound of Macon; grandchildren, Chelsea Pound and James Lamar Pound, III, both of New Orleans, LA.

 

Funeral Services for Jimmy will be held Saturday, May 28, 2016, 4:00 PM, at the First United Methodist Church, in Covington, with Rev. Dr. Douglas Gilreath, Rev. Jan McCoy and Phil Stone officiating, and interment following in Covington City Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family Friday, May 27, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington. Jerry Fisher

Jerry Wayne Fisher was born on May 4, 1949, to proud parents Niff and Alma Fisher. Jerry grew up in Porterdale, Georgia, with his sister, Rita and younger brother Jeff. Throughout his school years, Jerry excelled in athletics of all kinds, and was particularly a stand out in football. Jerry thoroughly enjoyed sports and was a huge Georgia Bulldog fan. He also loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing with friends. Jerry will be missed by all who loved him and shared their lives with him. May he rest in peace with the Lord….He was preceded in death by his father, Niff Baxter Fisher.

Floyd Roberts

Floyd O. Roberts, Sr., of Covington passed away May 24, 2016, at the age of 75. Mr. Roberts was a member of The Baptist Tabernacle for over 55 years. He graduated from Newton County High School in 1960, and he proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserves. Mr. Roberts was a crane operator for 23 years, where he retired from Superior Rigging and Erecting Company. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and going to the mountains. In addition, he and his wife, Paula were foster parents for 8 years.  A loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Preceding him in death was his son, Anthony Roberts; parents, Jesse and Lucy Roberts; sister, Inez Johnson; brothers, Junior Roberts and Grady Roberts.

Mary Allen

Mary I. Allen of Covington passed away May 24, 2016, at the age of 70. Mary was born and raised in Porterdale, Georgia, and she was a member of Honey Creek Baptist Church in Conyers. A member of the Red Hat Society, she enjoyed shopping and doing arts and crafts. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jerry O'Neil Allen; parents, Benny and Mary Penn; and sisters, Marsha Johnson, Linda Mangham.

Joe P. Williams

Mr. Joe P. Williams passed away on May 24, 2016, at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle, GA.  He was born on June 12, 1936, in Sherman, TX, to the late Lonnie Webb and Leona Thomas Williams.  Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Kamiryn Eve Boyles; brothers, Kenneth Williams, Donald Williams; half-brother, Leroy Thomas; son-in-law, Charlie Talluto; brothers-in-law, LaRoy Gee, Dewey Barton.

 

Joe was raised in Sherman, TX, enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1954, serving in Germany and other places until his discharge in July, 1956.  Upon discharge from the Air Force, Joe moved to the Atlanta area and began a very long profession as an optician.  He was employed by Dr. Elliott Pomerance for many years and remained with the same company when it became Ross EyeCare in Buckhead of North Atlanta, retiring in March, 1997.

 

Joe leaves his cherished and loving wife, Sandra "Sandy" Colquitt Williams; daughter, Sandra Talluto of Pittsburg, PA; sons, Danny Williams of Weaver, AL, Kevin (Crissy) Boyles of Jesup, GA; grandchildren, C.J., Tara, Jenn, Lori, Kristen, Alie, Brody, Megan; 9 great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret Everheart of Greenville, TX; brothers, Harold (Sharlynne) Williams of Wylie, TX, Alfred (Elizabeth) Williams of Fairview, TX, Lonnie (Michelle) Williams of Vacaville, CA; sisters-in-law, Idelle Williams, Betty Williams, Betty Barton, Georgia Gee; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Jeff Hall

Jeff Hall of Covington passed away May 20, 2016, at the age of 58. Jeff was a 1976 graduate of Newton County High School. He was employed by Lithonia Lighting for over 15 years, prior to doing military contractor work for 12 years. Jeff was a hard-worker, and he loved the Georgia Bulldogs. A dedicated father and loving brother, he will surely be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Omer and Virginia Martin Hall; and brother, Mickey Hall.

Frank Reece

Frank Reece of Covington passed away May 21, 2016, at the age of 84. Mr. Reece proudly served in the US Navy during the Korean War. He worked in the tent rental business for over 40 years, owning and operating his own company, Reece Tent Rentals from 1980 – 2000. A native of Ellijay, Georgia, he and his wife, Jeanette have lived in Covington, since 2002. Mr. Reece was a member of East Newton Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank, Sr., and Grace Reece.

 

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Jeanette Reece; daughters and son-in-law, Sharon Nix of St. Augustine, FL, Jennifer and John Akin of Atlanta; sons and daughter-in-law, Steve and Nancy Reece, David Reece all of Woodstock; grandchildren, Kelly Nix, Shawn Nix, Casey Nix, Lauren Akin, Michael Akin, Caroline Akin, Christopher Reece, Madison Reece.

Dennis Hyde

Dennis Hyde of Mansfield passed away May 20, 2016, at the age of 59. Dennis was a member of Gaithers United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee, on the finance committee and helped with the worship music. He owned and operated D & D Septic Tank Services from 1980 – 1988, and D & J's Trenching Services since 1992. A kind and forgiving man, he had a great sense of humor and was very business savvy. Dennis was a visionary with an excellent imagination. A loving and wonderful husband, father, grandfather and brother, he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Preceding him in death were his parents, Ross and Sarah Hyde.

Marty Kindle

Marty Kindle of Covington passed away May 18, 2016, at the age of 35. A very charismatic man with a wonderful sense of humor, he was well known for giving nicknames to everyone. Marty was very hard-working, never met a stranger and would help anyone in need. Devoted to his children, he enjoyed attending their sporting events and especially loved to coach the girls' softball team. Marty was a loving husband, father, son, brother and uncle, he will surely be missed by all who knew and loved him. Preceding him in death were his parents, P.J. and Phyllis Kindle.

Charlene Bell

Charlene Jacqueline Haggard Bell of Covington passed away May 14, 2016, the age of 82. Charlene was born August 2, 1933, at 10 Poplar Street, Porterdale, Georgia. She moved to Covington, Georgia in 1943, where she attended elementary school and Newton County High School. Charlene married Richard Bell in 1954. Richard was a graduate of Emory at Oxford College. During the time they lived in Cartersville, Georgia, she attended Coosa Valley Technical College in Rome, Georgia. They lived for 11years in North Canton, Ohio, where Richard was an executive with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio. Charlene was a faithful member of Covington First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by husband, Richard Bell; parents, Charles and Willie Mae Mozell Haggard; sisters, Doris Hatchell, Hazel Cordell and Gladys Kerbow.

 

Survivors include her son, R. Allen Bell and his wife, Rita of Portland, Maine; grandson, Nicholas Bell and his wife, Jaclyn of Powder Springs, GA; granddaughter, Tiffany Bell of Crawfordsville, AK; twin brother, Charles Haggard and his wife, Sharon; brother, Sid Haggard and his wife, Jeanette; sister, Marion Hampton; several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Bell will be held Thursday, May 19, 2016, 11:00 AM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street in Covington, with Rev. Ralph Meaker and Ralph Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens, 790 Indian Mounds Road, Cartersville, GA 30120, at 3:00 PM. Curtiss Lynch

Curtiss S. Lynch of Covington passed away May 14, 2016, at the age of 62. Curtiss attended Eastridge Community Church, and he was deeply committed in his faith. He was a 1971 graduate of Social Circle High School. An avid sports fan, Curtiss was either pulling for the Atlanta Braves or the Auburn Tigers. In addition, he enjoyed going fishing. He cherished the time spent with his family, and he will surely be missed by all who knew and loved him. Preceding him in death was his son, Curtiss "Curt" Sumner Lynch, Jr.; and parents, Otis, Sr., and Bernice Sumner Lynch.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 29 years, Nan Lynch; daughters and son-in-law, Alison and Gabe Mask of Covington, Nicole Lynch of Auburn, AL, Katie Lynch of Covington; son and daughter-in-law, Nicholas B. and Gina Lynch of Palatine, Il; grandchildren, Bryan, Eric, Reagan, Anthony, Lucy, Brayden, Audrey; great-granddaughter, Madalynn; sisters and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Tony Brooks of Loganville, Becky Jones of Monroe; brother, Otis Lynch, Jr., of Stockbridge; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

James Adams

James Lamar Adams "Bim" of Covington passed away May 13, 2016, at the age 61. Bim retired from Sweetheart Plastics after 25 years of service. He enjoyed listening to all genre of music. A gentle, kind hearted and soft spoken man, he loved and adored his family and cherished the time spent with them. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mrs. Pearlie McKnight Adams.

 

Survivors include his father, William H. Adams; sisters and brother-in-law, Aubrey Francine and Kenneth Griggs, Joan Adams, Harriet Adams Fairley, Yvonne Carr; brother, Delmas Noland Adams "Jabbo"; aunts, Ms. Camille McKnight, Ms. Nadia McKnight; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Johnny Roberts

Johnny Roberts of Covington passed away May 12, 2016, at the age of 61. Johnny cherished the time spent with his daughter, Jana, going to the mountains and on vacations. He enjoyed reading, studying history and going fishing. In addition, he loved to be outside exploring nature. Johnny had a heart for children and God's creation, and he contributed to numerous charities. A hard worker, with an incredible work ethic, he would often work holidays so others could be off with their families. A loving father, brother and uncle, he will surely be missed by all who knew and loved him. Preceding him in death were his parents, William Clifford, Sr., and Rosa Roberts; sisters, Carolyn Bunn and Bobbie Parham.

 

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Jana Roberts and Nicholas Skirrow of Bangkok, Thailand; sisters and brothers-in-law, Eunice and William Smith of Covington, Betty and Tom Brown of Gainesville; brother and sister-in-law, William (Billy), Jr., and Carolyn Roberts of Covington; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

 

A Memorial Service for Johnny will be held Monday, May 16, 2016, 6:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Philip Budensiek officiating. Obit - Charles A. Petersen

Charles A. Petersen, 45, of Oxford, passed away unexpectedly May 3, 2016. Charles enjoyed fishing, was a loving and devoted father and will be missed by his family and a multitude of friends.

 

Survivors include his daughter, Christina Ann Petersen; parents, Alexander and Annie (Redmon) Petersen; sister, Karen Macy Petersen of St. Helena, CA; brother and sister-in-law, Michael Dale and Tammy Petersen of Austin, TX; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Claude Spiva

Claude "Bud" M. Spiva of Covington passed away May 7, 2016, at the age of 74. Mr. Spiva proudly served in the US Army. His overseas tours of duty included Germany and Vietnam, where he was awarded the Purple Heart, serving with the Ninth Calvary, 81st Infantry Division. A member of Harvest Baptist Church, he served on the counting team and the food fellowship team. Mr. Spiva enjoyed all freshwater fishing, but especially trout fishing and camping in the mountains. A loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Preceding him in death were his parents, Lawrence and Sarah Spiva.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Peggy B. Spiva; daughters and son-in-law, Denise and Rudy Beam; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Allison Spiva all of Covington; grandchildren, Samantha Beam, Rodney Beam, Hayden Spiva; sister and brother-in-law, Susie and Joe Hale of Jackson; as well as numerous nieces and nephew.

Richard Noles

Richard Hammett Noles of Conyers passed away May 7, 2016, at the age of 72. Mr. Noles proudly served in the US Army with 21 years of service, before his retirement at Fort Stewart in Savannah, GA. His multiple tours of duty included Vietnam, East Africa, Hawaii, and Thailand. For his service, he was awarded the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and his unit was awarded the Army Meritorious Unit Citation. A loving husband, father and brother, he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dora Lucille Brooke.

 

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Anita J, Noles; daughter, Regina Helaine Noles of Smithville, TN; sisters, Barbara Sellars of Carrollton, Janie Cornett of Ellijay; brother, Danny Sellars of Carrollton.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Noles will be held Tuesday, May 10, 2016, 2:30 PM, at the Pavilion of Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2617 Vinson Highway SE, Milledgeville, GA., with Rev. David Riley officiating and interment followed in the cemetery. Friends may join the family for visitation Monday, May 9, from 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road in Covington. Mary Ruth Allgood Wilson

Mary Ruth Allgood Wilson of Cumming passed away May 5, 2016, at the age 96. Mrs. Wilson was a life-long resident of Newton County, and a member of Allen Memorial United Methodist Church. A wonderful cook she always had a meal prepared for her husband, Fred Allgood and was well known for her cake baking. Her favorite pastime was going to Turner Lake Senior Center to paint and finish ceramics. In addition, she also enjoyed crocheting afghan's in her spare time. Preceding her in death was her first husband of 47 years, Fred F. Allgood, and second husband, Woodrow Wilson, Sr.; parents, William "Buster" and Jenny Cowan Williams; two sisters and six brothers.

 

Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Wilson will be held Saturday, May 7, 2016, 1:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road in Covington, with Rev. Joshua Roberts officiating and interment following in Oxford Historical Cemetery. Friends may join the family at the funeral home two hours prior to the service from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM. Eddie Dean Lackey of Covington passed away May 2, 2016, at the age of 61. Mr. Lackey was of the Baptist faith, and was employed with Kliklok Woodman for 40 years. Eddie was an avid hunter, and he especially enjoyed hunting deer, wild boar, turkey and duck. In addition, a favorite pastime was salt and fresh-water fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Mary Ray Lackey.

 

Survivors include his sons and daughter-in-law, Jody and Crystal Lackey of Covington, Randell Lackey of Spring City, TN; grandchildren, Calley Lackey, James Lackey, Sierra Lackey; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Alice and Glendon Byron Bagley of Buford; brother, Dennis Lackey of Covington; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Sam Wooten

Sam Wooten of Conyers, passed away May 1, 2016, at the age of 73.  Born to the late Calvin and Nettie Wooten, he loved his family and always put them first.  Mr. Wooten retired from Norfolk Southern after 34 years of service.  He enjoyed woodworking, flying, and working on his plane and his cars. Mr. Wooten was better known for his love of running and cycling. In addition to being an avid reader, he gave freely of his time helping others and participating in mission trips. 

 

Survivors include his devoted wife of 51 years, Nancy Wooten of Conyers; daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle and Ed Poole of Conyers, Allyson and Marty Timms of Macon; grandchildren, Meredith Poole, Morgan Poole, Fisher Timms, Parish Timms; sisters, Lucy Mahaffey, Peggy Fisher, Ruth Jackson, Sue Jones, Martha Harwell; brother, Neal Wooten; as well as a multitude of nieces and nephews.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Wooten will be held Wednesday, May 4, 2016, 2:00 PM, at First Baptist Church, 1129 Usher Street NE, in Covington, with Pastor Ralph Meaker officiating.  Friends are invited to join the family for visitation after the service.  Interment will follow at a later date in North Carolina.

Frances Foster - Corrected Obit

Frances Lynn Foster of Covington, passed away April 29, 2016, at the age of 74.  Mrs. Foster worked at Newton Medical Center as a Nurse Anesthetist for 30 years.  In addition, she enjoyed crocheting and cross stitching.  Mrs. Foster loved being around people, especially children.  She was preceded in death by her parents, John O'Quinn, Sr., and Sheba (Allen) Lynn. 

 

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Claude Fred Foster; sons and daughter-in-law, Mike and Jill Foster, Chris Foster; grandchildren, Daphne Foster, Sydney Foster, Stella Foster, Zaetta Foster; sister, Geneva Davis; brother and sister-in-law, John O'Quinn, Jr., and Debbie Lynn; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
