obit for Phyllis Allgood

Phyllis Allgood of Conyers passed away September 29, 2016, at the age of 55. Preceding her in death were her father, Billy Hammond; and grandson, Carson Allgood.

 

Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Christy and Michael Little, Elizabeth Allgood; sons and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Brittany Allgood, Matthew Allgood; grandchildren, Mia Little and Ashton Little; brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Jayne Hammond.

 

A Memorial Service for Ms. Allgood will be held Sunday, October 2, 2016, 3 PM, at Belmont Baptist Church, 3275 Iris Drive, Conyers, with Pastor Nolan Jackson officiating. Friends may join the family for visitation, at the church, one hour prior to her service, from 2 - 3 PM. Steven P. Ray, 65, of Winder, passed away Thursday, September 1, 2016. Son of the late A.J. and Sarah Ray, of Conyers, he was a graduate of Gordon High School. Steve retired from DeKalb County Schools after 31 years of dedicated service.

 

Steve is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law; two grandchildren; one brother; one sister and brother-in-law; and one niece.

 

A Memorial Service for Steve will be held Saturday, October 1, 2016, 2:30 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington. C.A. "Bud" Gissendaner of Newborn, passed away September 25, 2016, at 89 years of age.  A proud U.S. Army Veteran, he was the owner and operator of Bud's Interior Trim for 20 years.  In addition, he was a retiree of Southern Pacific Railroad, with 16 years of service. Mr. Gissendaner was a devout Christian, serving as a deacon in the churches he attended over the years.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Ned and Gracie (White) Gissendaner; daughters, Karen Himebauch, Gail Hembree, Robyn Krantz; sisters, Mary Eva Pritchard, Willora Sue Gissendaner; and brother, Willis Alford "Cheesie" Gissendaner.

 

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Eloise Gissendaner of Newborn; sons and daughters-in-law, Randall and Sharon Gissendaner, Jonathan and Ronda Gissendaner, both of Covington, Daniel and Lisa Gissendaner of Social Circle; 13 grandchildren; sister, Lucille Bouse of Cache, OK; brothers and sisters-in-law, Pete and Shirley Gissendaner of Flagstaff, AZ, Robert and Diane Gissendaner of Broken Arrow, OK; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mr. Gissendaner will be held Saturday, October 1, 2016, 11: 00 AM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, with Pastor J.T. Joe Riley

Joe Riley of Snellville passed away September 24, 2016, at 68 years of age.  He began his career in economic development in Hopkinsville, KY and operated the California office of economic development for the state of Kentucky.  He then continued his career as an economic developer for Georgia EMC for 34 years. He received the Rip Wiley Award, the most prestigious award presented by the Georgia EMC. Mr. Riley pursued very diligently his personal goals for both his family and his work.  He was a member of Goshen Baptist Church in Lawrenceburg, KY, but attended Cannon United Methodist Church in Snellville with his wife, Peg.  Mr. Riley was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Earl and Loretta (Disponett) Riley; and brother, Delaine Riley.

 

Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Peg Daigle-Riley of Snellville; daughter, Natalie Riley-Ingram and husband, John of Alpharetta; son, Patrick Riley of Boca Raton, FL; grandchildren, Aidan Ingram, Ansley Ingram; sisters, Shirley Ann Durr, Betty Sue Houp, and brother, E.J. Riley, all of Lawrenceburg, KY; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Juanita Giles Elmore

Juanita Giles Elmore of Conyers, GA, passed into Glory September 24, 2016, at 81 years of age.  Mrs. Elmore was known for being a lively and spunky spirit who never met a stranger.  She enjoyed playing a clown for many years, especially for her friends and loved ones.  Mrs. Elmore acted as Mrs. Claus for children every year at Christmas.  She loved serving in her church and filled multiple roles there.  Mrs. Elmore will be greatly missed by those whose lives she filled with love and laughter. She is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas M. and Lillian Giles.

 

 Survivors include her husband of almost 60 years, Charles Elmore; sons and their spouses, Carey and Brenda Elmore, Danny and Terri Elmore, Jonny and Holly Elmore, 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Catherine Mills Horton of Covington passed away September 23, 2016, at the age of 86. Mrs. Horton was a native of Newton County and spent most of her life here. For the past 16 months, she resided in Grantville, Georgia with her daughter, Carol. Mrs. Horton was employed by Belk Department Store for 20 years, retiring in 1995. Her love of people was very evident in her work, and her life. She was as a member of Porterdale Presbyterian Church, but also attended Calvary Baptist Church, in Rockdale County, with her son, Teddy. In her younger years, Mrs. Horton enjoyed bowling, and spending time with her family and friends. Preceding her death were her parents, Marvin A. and Modine (Lindsey) Mills; husband, J.T. Horton, Sr.; brothers, Larry Mills, Lee Mills, Marvin Mills.

 

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Art Kraft of Grantville, GA.; sons and daughters-in-laws, Teddy and Wanda Horton of Covington, GA, Al and Janis Horton of Palmetto, GA; eight grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; sisters, Maxine Blankenship of Oxford, GA, and Dorothy Donaldson of Covington, GA; several nieces and nephews.

George Anne Whitehead, 74, passed away September 20, 2016, in Dunnellon, FL, at her children's home. Mrs. Whitehead was from Maryville, Tennessee, and was a high school graduate of Everett High, class of 1960. She worked for the Industrial Board for Blount County, as well as the Blount County Sheriff's Department. Mrs. Whitehead was a member of Everett Hills Baptist Church and was considered a great friend to everyone. Never one to meet a stranger, and her willingness to lend a helping hand, were considered two of her best attributes. Mrs. Whitehead took great pleasure in doing arts and crafts. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Alvin and Lucille Davidson; and sister, Alice Schultz.

 

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Kim Whitehead of Dunnellon, FL; sister, Betty Parry of Whidbey Island, WA; five grandchildren; as well as eight great-grandchildren.

obit for Billy G. Cochran

Billy G. Cochran of Newborn, passed away September 22, 2016, at the age of 81. Mr. Cochran, a man who loved to work, dedicated 55 years of service to International Union Operator Engineers, Local 926, retiring when he was 67 years old. He served in the National Guard, and was a Mason with Lodge 12, in Mableton. In his free time, Mr. Cochran enjoyed watching football and NASCAR. Deep-sea fishing and camping were two of his favorite pastimes when his kids were younger. Mr. Cochran was preceded in death by his son, Billy Gordon Cochran, Jr.; wife, Bobbie Jean (Ralston) Cochran; parents, Clifford and Edna (Hester) Cochran; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Dick Mundy; and son-in-law, Richard Lane.

obit for Steven Hodges

Steven Wayne Hodges (64), Covington, Georgia passed away, Sunday, September 11, 2016 in Bangor, Maine. Steve was born, June 6, 1952 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin to Donald and Shirley Hodges.  He was one of three brothers and two sisters. After graduation Steve moved to McAllen, Texas to study Spanish at Kingsway, emersion-style.  Following several months of Spanish he then worked as a missionary in Mexico with Front Line Missions.  He spent ten years teaching, preaching, building churches and loving the Mexican people.  He was then called as an Associate Minister to one of Atlanta's largest churches.  He received a Bachelor of Science in the College of Health Sciences from Georgia State University, August 1984.  In April of 1998, Steve became a Licensed Professional Counselor.  For 14 years Steve (Mad Dog) worked as Director of Audits for APS Healthcare; for the past year he worked for Beacon Health Options.

 

During his life, riding motorcycles was one of his biggest joys.  He laughed and said "that is how I am going to go out -- on my motorcycle."  He was an excellent driver and loved going on very long trips with his friends.  As a servant of the Lord, Steve loved working and helping other cultures.  He was a member of the Christian Motorcyclists Association, who minister to the motorcycle community and raised money annually to provide motorcycles and transportation to pastors in third world countries.  He was preceded in death by his mother Shirley Hodges, brother Charles Hodges and nephew Charlie Hodges.

 

Survivors include his friend and wife, Kathy; daughter, MJ; father, Donald Hodges (Wilma); sisters Sheila and Marilyn (Jess); brother John (Barb); two step children, Kevin (Alex) and Maggie (Remington) and grandchildren (Peyton, Rylee, Connor, Charley); several nieces and nephews, and a myriad of special friends.

 

Friends may visit with the family at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, Saturday, September 17, 2016, from 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM.  A "Celebration of Life" will follow at  Gateway Community Church, 11677 Brown Bridge Road, in Covington, Saturday at 2:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers it was Steve's request to have donations made to: "Run for the Son", Christian Motorcyclists Association.  CMA-RFS, P.O. Box 9, Hatfield, AR 71945. We will always remember Steve's kindness, thoughtfulness, compassion, commitment to his Lord, and his wonderful laugh and sense of humor.

Gilliam and Juanita Manley, James George, Vivian Lunsford, Norman and Hazel Crocker, as well as her Aunt Cheri George and Uncle Joseph Cooper.

Helen Mills Rhodes of Covington, GA, formerly of Clay City, IN, passed away September 10, 2016, at 100 years of age.  Mrs. Rhodes was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Russell Mills; second husband, Hugh Rhodes; parents, John Robert and Martha M. (Ashcraft) Gibson; sister, Inez Stark; brothers, Lester Gibson and Roy Gibson.

 

Mrs. Rhodes is survived by her daughter, Lynn (Don) Watson of San Francisco, CA; son, Jack (Zona) Mills of Covington, GA; grandson, John (Tamela) Mills of Covington; and great-grandson, Kanaan Mills.

 

A private Inurnment Service will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in Clay City, IN, at a later date.

Bobbie Bailey of Monticello, passed away September 10, 2016, at the age of 81. Mrs. Bailey was a member of New Rocky Creek Baptist Church. Combining her love of gospel music and friends, she was an active member of the church choir. Outings with her husband and church family would oftentimes be spent camping. Mrs. Bailey, with an infectious smile and love of friends, could be found playing canasta, fishing, and devoting time to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In addition to vegetable gardening, she had a passion for cooking - dressing being one of her most remarkable dishes. Mrs. Bailey was also known to have a gift for making amazing desserts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill M. Bailey; and parents, Willard and Bertie (Williams) Williamson.

Obit - Ellen Louise Hall

Ellen Louise Hall, age 86, of Milstead, died September 5, 2016. Mrs. Hall was a faithful member of Light of Calvary Baptist Church in Conyers. She was a loving friend, with a jovial spirit, and most would remember her from serving as a Greeter at the "old" Walmart in Covington. Preceding her in death were her parents, Lossie and Genelia (Farrow) Hall; and all her siblings, Andrew Hall, Howard Hall, Bennie Hall, Margaret Skinner and Mary Lou Stansell.

 

She is survived by a multitude of nieces, nephews and friends.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Hall will be held Wednesday, September 7, 2016, 3:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Deacon Roger Hall and Rev. Terry Brock officiating and interment following in Eastview Cemetery in Conyers. Friends may visit with her family Wednesday, two hours prior to the service, from 1:00 – 3:00 PM. Flowers are accepted, or contributions may be made to assist with funeral expenses.

Obit - Deborah Jean Harp

Deborah Jean Harp of Union Point, passed away September 4, 2016, at the age of 64. Deborah was a loving mother and grandmother who will forever be missed by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Harvey Lee Harp; granddaughter, Amber Harp; and her parents, Robert Edward Lee and Joyce (Hall) Dick.

 

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Jason and Jennifer Harp of Madison, Justin and Davlyn Harp, Steven Harp; grandchildren, Ashley Harp, Laurie Harp, Kaitlyn Harp, Chyna Harp, Savannah Harp, Tyler Harp, Shaun Delaney, Jesse Harp, Jake Hooser; great-grandchildren, SJ Malloy, Isabella Malloy; sister and brother-in-law, Naomi and Richard Kelly; brother and sister-in-law, Johnny and Lois Dick; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Memorial Service for Deborah will be held at a later date.

obit for Maynard Carlton Johnson

 

Maynard Carlton Johnson of Covington, passed away September 1, 2016, at the age of 81. He and his wife, Helen, moved to Covington in 1978. Mr. Johnson retired from Constar Plastics, as a Process Technician, and was a member of Canaan Baptist Church. Preceding him in death were his daughter, Kathy Johnson, and his parents, M.C. Johnson and Winnie Lou (Richardson) Layton.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Helen G. Johnson; daughters and sons-in-law, Paula and Ed Hinley of Covington, Judy and Terry Goodman of Conyers; son and daughter-in-law, Calvin and Thanya Johnson of Covington; grandsons, Stephen Buckley, Michael Buckley, Matthew Johnson, Caleb Johnson, Noah Johnson; great-grandchildren, Bradley Buckley, Bennett Buckley, Brayden Buckley, Brycson Buckley, Liam Johnson, Beckham Johnson; sisters, Dorothy O'Hearn and Sarah Lou Taylor of Colquitt, GA; brother, Jessie Layton of Donaldsonville, GA; along with several nieces and nephews.

 

A funeral service for Mr. Johnson will be held Saturday, September 3, 2016,  2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Stan Berrong officiating and interment to follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service from 1:00 – 2:00 P.M.
