Syble P. Montgomery

Syble P. Montgomery of Newborn, passed away Sunday, December 30, 2018, at the age of 83. Mrs. Montgomery was a faithful member of East Lithonia Baptist Church. An industrious and hard worker, she was employed by Bibb Manufacturing Company for 10 years, Hercules for 10 years, and then retiring after 21 dedicated years with Sweetheart Plastics. Mrs. Montgomery enjoyed going to yard sales, flea markets and loved riding through the countryside – especially the mountains. She also delighted in cooking for her family and friends. Everyone loved her fried chicken and fried okra. Her husband affectionately referred to her as "his little woman".  She was preceded in death by her parents, Lambert and Ruby Palmer.

 

Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Nathan Montgomery; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Eddie Paulnott of Auburn, GA; sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Sherry Almond of  Covington, GA, Jerry and Wanda Montgomery of Monroe, GA, Timothy and Darlene Montgomery of Covington, GA, Allen and Frances Montgomery of Madison, GA; 21 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Brenda Waldrop of Porterdale, GA; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Montgomery will be held Thursday, January 3, 2019, 2:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Mike Farmer and Pastor Joe Reid officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home, Wednesday, January 2, from 4:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M.

Wayne Hunt

Julian Wayne Hunt of Covington, passed away at home on Saturday, December 29, 2018, one day short of his 79th birthday.  Born December 30th, 1939 at 11 Poplar Street in Porterdale, Wayne grew up on Washington Street in Covington, the oldest of two sons to Julian Glenn (Jake) and Oma Mae Blankenship Hunt.  After graduating from Newton County High School in 1960, he married Barbara Ann Famer of Porterdale GA on June 8th, 1962 and loved her through 56 years of marriage.

 

Wayne also loved his country and served it proudly by joining the United States Air force on June 8th, 1960 as an Airman First Class, completing his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio TX, before being assigned to Patrick Air Force Base in Cocoa Beach Florida.  He was responsible for maintenance on high altitude surveillance aircraft, provided support to the US Space Program and witnessed John Glenn being shot into space in 1962.  From 1962 - 1964 he was stationed at Chambly Air Force Base outside Paris France.  Post military, Wayne joined Hercules and worked as a line operator, process audit technician, process engineer and technician for 30 years.  After retirement in 1997, he put his skills and passion to work by opening a business providing home improvement services until he hung us his hammer at the age of 70.  

 

Wayne gave his time and talents to many organizations in the local community.  He was very active in the Newton County Jaycees, serving in various leadership roles including President, during which he spearheaded the building of the Jaycee Youth Center on Brown Bridge Road.  He was President of the PTA for East Newton Elementary and coached youth baseball and soccer for many years.  He was an active member of the American Legion Post 32 since 1980 and a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church for over 30 years during which he served as Chairman of the Administrative Board, Chairman of the Trustees and President of the Men's Club.  Later in life he helped organize the NCHS 50th year class reunion and found great joy in connecting with former schoolmates. 

 

Most of all Wayne was a good man who loved God, his wife, 2 sons, 4 grandkids and extended family deeply and therefore invested all his energy building a happy home.  His joys in life were simple, spending time with family and friends, celebrating birthdays and special occasions, making homemade ice-cream and completing home improvement projects.  He found joy in the happiness of others.  When time allowed, he and Barbara enjoyed traveling together, visiting 47 of the 50 states including Hawaii and Alaska.

 

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Barbara Hunt of Covington; son, Matthew Wayne Hunt (Cathy Madden Hunt) of Alpharetta GA, and grandkids Davis Matthew Hunt (20), Julia Lynn Hunt (18) and Holly Nicole Hunt (15); son, Wesley Kyle Hunt (Elisha M. Hunt) of Covington GA, and grandson Julian Addison Hunt (12); Brother James J. Hunt (Gail Hunt) of Kingsport TN and nephew Brian Hunt and niece Megan Balkovic; Sister in Law Beverly Famer of Covington, and nephews Robby Farmer and Michael Gilder and nieces Terri Cobb and Cindy Marzen; living 1st Cousins - Bob Hunt (Sylvia), Willene Davis, Reggie Hunt (DeeDee); Larry Savage, Jimmy Blankenship, Nealus Wheeler (Janet); Aunt Willie Pearl. He was proceeded in death by his parents, Julian Glenn (Jake) Hunt, Oma Mae Blankenship Hunt; and infant daughter Angela Nicole Hunt. 

 

A Funeral Service for Mr. Hunt will be held Wednesday, January 2, 2019, 2:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Leah Cunningham officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Varina Anderson

Varina Anderson of Mansfield, passed away Friday, December 28, 2018, at the age of 95. Mrs. Anderson was a faithful member of High Point Baptist Church for 45 plus years. She enjoyed canning and freezing in the summer when fresh vegetables were in. In addition, she liked playing Bingo on Wednesday nights with the seniors at Kroger. She delighted in cooking for her family and baking cakes and sweets. Her family was her world and especially her grandchildren – she loved being called Grandma. Mrs. Anderson will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andy Anderson; and son, Anthony Anderson.

 

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Janice Anderson, Mark and Sally Anderson, Jeff and Cathy Anderson; eight grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; sisters, Sara, Anice, Jan; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Lillian Harvey Benjamin

Lillian Harvey Benjamin of Conyers, passed away December 26, 2018, at the age of 1. Lillian liked watching ABC Kids T.V. and CoCoMelon. She enjoyed cruising on the road and liked it when her family sang to her her favorite lullaby Lillian Mukefanna.

Miles Cope

Miles Cope of Oxford, passed away Friday, December 28, 2018, at the age of 76. Mr. Cope was a member of Woodlake Baptist Church in Walnut Grove. He retired after 30 years of dedicated service with AT&T. Mr. Cope enjoyed woodworking and stone engraving as well as many other hobbies. He loved his family and especially his grandchildren. Mr. Cope was preceded in death by his parents, Miles and Cleo Cope.

Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Shelby Roberts Cope; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Matt Chastain; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Christy Cope; grandchildren, Copelyn, Emily, Rex, Mitchell, and granddaughter on the way, Ali; sister, Louise Pugh; brother and sister-in-law, Loyd and Ann Cope; as well as several nieces and nephews.

obit for Sarah Ann French Stone

Sarah Ann French Stone, born March 5, 1923, in Taft, Texas, passed away Wednesday, December 26, 2018, at the age of 95. Formerly a lifelong resident of Taft, "Miss Sarah" moved to Conyers, Georgia, in 1998, to be near her only child, Shelby Stone Griscom, who preceded her in death, May 3, 1999. Also preceding her in death was her loving husband, Shelby Stone; parents, Charles and Alice French; and sister, Charleen Flood.

 

Although Texas was never far from her heart, Sarah remained in Conyers to be near her family. A child of the Great Depression, Sarah and her sister, Charleen, loved the cotton fields of south Texas. Sarah took particularly good care of her parents and provided them with the love and attention they deserved. After 42 years of loyal service, Sarah retired from the Defense Logistics Agency. She believed in giving back to the community and was a longtime member of Toastmasters and the American Business Women's Association in Portland, Texas. Sarah relished her many friends and the travels they all enjoyed together.

 

Survivors include her grandsons, Tres Griscom and wife, Angie, of Covington, USAF Master Sgt. York Griscom of Fort Worth, TX; great-grandchildren, Mykal Griscom, SarahAnn Griscom, Kate Griscom, Shelby Griscom, Abby Griscom, Ross Griscom; niece, Vicki Patterson of San Antonio, TX; and nephew, John Flood of San Diego, CA.

Roger Dale Gossage

Roger Dale Gossage of Covington, passed away Thursday, December 27, 2018, at the age of 71. Through the years he amazed his friends with his intelligence, knowledge of the law, and insurance. When Roger worked at Lockheed-Martin, he was known by his fellow union members as "the insurance guru".  Some even referred to him as their "Lockheed attorney". He was on the negotiating board at Lockheed and helped negotiate the contract every 3 years, especially the insurance section. Roger was always there for whoever needed his help. He fought for the rights of those he felt were not being treated fairly by employers. Later, Roger became a Certified Senior Advisor, so he could fight battles for the elderly. He saw to it that their rights were protected as they entered their golden years. He was a born negotiator. He was also a member of the Newton Rockdale Regional Senior Providers Network.

 

Roger was very active in his community. He was a member of the local Chamber of Commerce, serving on the small business committee, ambassador, and he was a founding member of the buy local committee. Roger was very passionate about buying local to keep tax dollars in the community. He was also a member of the NAIFA,  serving as president of the Walton/Newton Chapter. He has volunteered with Main Street and provided assistance to many organizations. He helped bring the crosswalks back to the square downtown and at the shopping center from Pace Street.

 

Most of all Roger was a people person. Whether joking around, making people laugh or loving his family. He was a wonderful and loving husband, father, and grandfather. Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Debbie Gossage of Covington; daughters and sons-in-law; Brandy Belinda Gossage of Norcross, Carroll and David Moss of Social Circle, Holly Kaas and Brian Deal of Covington; grandchildren Emily Moss Stoddard and husband, Nick, Sarah Grace Moss, Henry Kaas, Harrison Kaas; sisters-in-law, Emma Bowen, Sharon Wallace; brother-in-law, Leon Long; several nieces and nephews; as well as his beloved cat, Coco.

Hugh S. Cooper of Jackson, passed away Thursday, December 27, 2018, at the age of 78. Mr. Cooper supported himself through college and after graduating continued to build on his strong work ethic. As a self-made man, he provided for his family with the same drive and determination. Mr. Cooper was an attentive father and grandfather, and he enjoyed cheering on his children and grandchildren while they played sports. He loved his life on the lake where he would relax and drink coffee. Mr. Cooper was a motorcycle enthusiast and was proud to be a part of the Romeo Brotherhood. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh Steven and Julia (Phillips) Cooper; sister, Ann Holton; brothers, Jippy Cooper, Danny Cooper; and brother-in-law, Frank Ivey.

Betty Wilbanks Hughes

Betty Wilbanks Hughes of Warne, North Carolina, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2018, at the age of 73. Mrs. Wilbanks was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who had a heart of gold. She was a people person and always had a smile on her face. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing. Mrs. Hughes loved her animals – especially her dog, Bandit. She was preceded in death by her late husband, William "Bud" Wilbanks; granddaughter, Kayla Wilbanks.

Terry R. Johnson of Covington, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2018, at the age of 58. Terry had a love for the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting and eating catfish. obit for Billy Payne

Billy Payne of Conyers, passed away Saturday, December 22, 2018, at the age of 88. During his remarkable career at the United States Postal Service, Mr. Payne worked many different jobs including his position at the district office in finance/budget and his time spent in retail. He was promoted to postmaster in Oxford before he eventually retired after 36 years of dedicated service. In addition to being a charter member of Christ Cornerstone Church, Mr. Payne served faithfully in his role as a trustee. Artistically and musically gifted, he loved playing guitar and was known for his amazing wildlife paintings. Mr. Payne's presence as a loving and attentive family man will be genuinely missed. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Michael Garner; parents, Ezell and Leila (Tarply) Payne; and five brothers and sisters.

 

Survivors include the love of his life and adoring wife of 69 years, Mildred "Micki" Payne; daughter and son-in-law, LaJuana and Douglas Garner; son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Jeanne Payne, all of Covington; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Virgil and Emilie Payne of San Antonio, TX; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mary Symons of Covington, passed away December 21, 2018, at the age of 78. Mrs. Symons was outgoing, sociable and fun-loving. Her favorite activities reflected her personality; she loved to bowl, play games, cook for friends and spend time with her family. Hunting for treasures in thrift stores, Mrs. Symons delighted in adding to her expansive watch and jewelry collection. She loved to travel and even made friends while in Holland and Mexico. Additionally, Mrs. Symons enjoyed swimming, walking and watching movies. She will be dearly missed by her close friends at the Covington Square High-Rise. Mrs. Symons was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Symons; and brothers, Don Schafer, Bob Schafer, David Schafer.

 

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Arturo Aguilera, Elaine Catherine and Bill Bates, Kimberly Marie and Matthew O'Shea; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Patricia Symons; grandchildren, Sandra Aguilera, Megan Symons, Casey Symons, Allison Aguilera, Brianna Symons, Shelby Symons, Christopher Bates, Johnithan O'Shea; sisters, Elaine Latting, Janet Brown, Corrine Albers, Paula Smith; as well as brother, Gene Schafer.

 

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Symons will be held Wednesday, December 26, 2018, 12:00 Noon, at First United Methodist Church, 1113 Conyers Street NW, in Covington, with Rev. Jan McCoy officiating. Lisa (CiCi) Parnell Mon, age 50, of Wall Township, New Jersey, formerly of Mansfield, Georgia, passed away December 18, 2018. Lisa was raised in Mansfield Baptist Church, and while living in New Jersey, she attended St. Mark's Catholic Church where she sang in the choir. Though she was a gifted musician, both as a vocalist and pianist, she was also known for her culinary skills. As a loving and caring mother to her daughter, Maggie, Lisa was attentive, compassionate and always there to lend support and guidance. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Julius and Mildred Lazenby; and paternal grandparents, W.A. and Fannie Mae Parnell.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Catherine (Maggie) Mon; Maggie's father, Dean R. Mon, both of Sea Girt, NJ; parents, Larry and Catherine Parnell; sister and brother-in-law, Lori and Donnie Adamson, all of Mansfield, GA; brother and sister-in-law, Monty and Nancy Parnell of Perry, GA; nieces and nephews, Dr. Jacob Parnell and Amanda Parnell, Jared Parnell and fiancée, Tiana Castillo, Lacy Adamson, Eva Catherine Parnell; as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Barbara Joan Spaulding Ryan of Covington, passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2018, at the age of 69. Mrs.  Ryan enjoyed spending time outside gardening and had a fondness for animals – especially birds. Spending time and making memories with her grandchildren was one of her greatest joys. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rick Ryan; parents, Harry Spaulding and Joan Lobe.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Samantha Ryan; sons and daughters-in-law, Aaron and Pam Cooley, Chuck Cooley and Mari Davis, Travis and Sonny Ryan, Richard and Renee Ryan; 13 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; sisters, Jennifer, Karen, Elizabeth, Sally; brothers, Robbie and Tom.

Pat Rochelle-Hughes of Oxford, passed away December 17, 2018, at the age of 67. Ms. Rochelle-Hughes graduated from Miami Dade College where she earned an associates degree in art – her greatest passion. She adored her family and will be deeply missed by all. Ms. Rochelle-Hughes was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Ann (Thompson) Dickerson.

 

Survivors include her daughters, Torri Paige, Touris Rochelle; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Ernestine Hanna; and brother, Calvin Dickerson.

Barbara O. Capes of Covington, passed away Sunday, December 16, 2018, at the age of 81. Mrs. Capes enjoyed reading, traveling to St. Simons Island and was an avid University of Georgia Bulldog fan. Mrs. Capes adored her family and loved spending time with them – especially her grandchildren who she shared a special bond with. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jerry O. Capes; parents, Eugene and Cleo Oglesbee.

Teresa Bynum Poling

Teresa Bynum Poling of Conyers, passed away Thursday, December 13, 2018, at the age of 62. Teresa was a member of First Baptist Church of Conyers and co owner of Storage Increase Incorporated. In 1996 she became Georgia's Lady Trap Shooting state champion. Her grandchildren were her world and she shared a special bond with each of them. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and daughter.

 

Survivors include her loving husband of 40 years, Willis R. Poling; daughters and sons-in-law, Vanessa Savona and her fiancé, Shayne Senator, Elizabeth and Branden Smith; parents, Gus and Cecil Bynum; grandchildren, R.J. Emma Frances Rider Duke

Emma Frances Rider Duke of Covington, passed away December 11, 2018, at 92 years of age. With Mrs. Dukes loving demeanor, she had a huge heart and was known as the family caregiver. She enjoyed spending time with her family and vacationing at the beach and the lake with them. Mrs. Duke was a gifted musician who could play many instruments, but especially enjoyed sharing her talent as she played the piano. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas Duke; parents, Benjamin and Emma Rider; and nine brothers and sisters.

 

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Evon and Gregg Cowan, Ronda and David Neff; grandchildren, Dustin Piper, Danielle Neff, Ashely and Jared Coles, Brittany and Jeremy Coles; great-grandchildren, Cam Coles, Mason Coles, Case Coles; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Duke will be held Friday, December 14, 2018, 2:00 PM at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington. William B. Bates of Covington, passed away December 11, 2018, at the age of 72. Mr. Bates was retired from AT&T after 30 plus years of dedicated service. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, and he sang in the St. Cecilia Choir for 28 years. During his retirement, he used his tech background to invent a computer mouse for the disabled and then gave the pattern to Tech Able. Mr. Bates' volunteer work included his role as the leader of Servant of the Lord Meals on Wheels, his work with Monastery of The Holy Spirit in Conyers, and his membership in Knights of Columbus 4th Degree. He was preceded in death by his parents, William E. and Lucille Mary (Barry) Bates; and sister, Alice Margarette Bates Bush.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Jane Ellen Lasichak Bates; daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Allen Lyczak; son and daughter-in-law, William E. and Polina Bates; grandchildren, Justine D. Bates, Sean A. Bates; several nieces and nephews; and his fur babies, Nellie, Lola, and Buddy the Cat.

Lynwood A. Maddox - Updated Obit

Lynwood A. Maddox of Tucker, passed away December 10, 2018, at the age of 88. As a man of unwavering faith, he lived his entire life in a manner that reflected his Christian views. As a practicing attorney for more than 64 years, Mr. Maddox was guided by his faith in God.  He served as Counsel for hundreds of Churches, Ministries, Evangelistic Associations and Non-Profit Corporations.  He was an Elder at both Mt. Paran Church of God and it's predecessor: Hemphill Avenue Church of God. On Television, he was well known as the host of both Countdown to a Miracle and the weekend edition of The 700 Club programs. Mr. Maddox served as International Secretary for Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship International and served as President of the Atlanta Chapter.  Known affectionately as "Doc" to his men, Mr. Maddox proudly served his country during the Korean War in the United States Navy, in his role as a Corpsman in the United States Marines. He will lovingly be remembered by his family as a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Maddox was preceded in death by his parents, Levie Alvin and Maxie (McClure) Maddox; sisters, Fay Maddox Aikin, Vivian Maddox, Jo Ann Knight; and brothers, J.C. Maddox, David Maddox.

 

Survivors include his adoring wife of 68 years, Bonnie Faye Maddox; children and their spouses, Deborah and Larry Shrader of Lilburn, Lynwood Alvin, Jr., and Carol Maddox of Marietta, Thomas Lee and Monica Maddox of Kennesaw, Nancy and Cecil Pharr, III, of Atlanta; grandchildren and their spouses: Rebekah and Will Gifford, Brittany and Kyle Wheelus, Abigail Shrader, Caleb and Diana Shrader, Rachel Catherine Maddox, John Lynwood Maddox, Hannah Maddox, Mark Maddox, Joseph Maddox, Samuel Maddox, Chelsea and Tom Hagopian, and Cecil Pharr, IV; great-grandchildren: Micah Gifford, Hannah Rose Gifford, Noah Gifford, Addison Wheelus, Ethan Wheelus, and another Baby Wheelus due this week; sisters, Betty Lou Shaw of Covington; Glenda Austin of New Orleans, LA, Shirley Crawford; brother and sister-in-law, John Wayne and Vickie Maddox, all of Porterdale; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
