Betty Osborne Mitcham

Betty Osborne Mitcham of Covington, passed away June 27, 2018, at the age of 85. A supportive member of Covington First United Methodist Church, Mrs. Mitcham sang in the choir and was actively involved in the Stephens Ministry. She also taught an exercise class to fellow church members. Mrs. Mitcham was a member of the Covington Woman's Club and Satsuki Garden Club. She was an artist of oil paintings, loved to fish and enjoyed traveling. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 42 years, Robert Mitcham; parents, Berry and Etna Osborne; siblings, Berry Osborne, Emory (Vernell) Osborne, Martha Ann (Joseph) Summerour, Etna (Charles) Smith; as well as her beloved fur-babies, Samantha and Harley.

 

Survivors include her daughters, Karan Mitcham Bumann, Carla Mitcham Williamson (Michael), Dalleen Mitcham Bradford (Philip); grandchildren, Eric Peters (Danielle), Brian Peters (Amanda), Paige Williamson, Ashley Williamson, Robert Bradford, Andrew Bradford, Claire Bradford; great-grandchildren, Tyler Peters, Violet Nosal, Gavin Peters, Bailey Peters; many nieces, nephews and close friends.  

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Mitcham will be held Saturday, June 30, 2018, 11:00 AM, at First United Methodist Church, 1113 Conyers Street SW, in Covington with Rev. Dr. Douglas Gilreath and Rev. Jan McCoy officiating. Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park, in Covington. Kathy Fleming "Momo"

Kathy Fleming "Momo" of Mansfield, passed away June 25, 2018, at the age of 88. Mrs. Fleming was a former volunteer candy striper at Newton General and had served 30 plus years with The Alcove before retiring. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, crocheting, and doing needlepoint. Mrs. Fleming was known for being an excellent cook and baker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan L. Fleming; parents, W.C. and Dulce Faye Cole

 

Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Lea Cantrell; grandchildren, Megan Tucker, Ivy Grace Tucker, Brittany Lynn Wood; and four great-grandchildren.

Scott Anglin

Scott Anglin, 55, of Covington, passed away June 24, 2018.  Scott was a caring person who had a big heart and was blessed with many family members and friends who loved him dearly.  He enjoyed hunting deer and fishing, but his passion was riding his Harley. Cruising down a country road or taking to the mountains was a way for him to clear his head.  Scott was preceded in death by his parents, Bobby and Renea Anglin.

 

He will be forever missed by his sons, Daniel Anglin and Cody Anglin; grandson, Kyle Ferguson; sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Mark Allen; nephews, Jonathan Cowan and David Cowan; as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews.

 

A Gathering of Friends will be held Friday, June 29, 2018, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, at                              

Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington.  The family will have a private graveside service at a later date.

Mildred Estelene Biddle

Mildred Estelene Biddle of Covington, passed away June 19, 2018, at the age of 85. Mrs. Biddle was a member of Harvest Baptist Church. In 1950 she was the class valedictorian of Smyrna High School. She loved to square dance even into her eighties. Mrs. Biddle adored her family – especially her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bill Biddle; parents, Paul and Alice Hammontree; sisters, Retha Jean Ellis and Peggy Sue Harmon.

 

Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Denise Coleman, Rita and Mark Warren; son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Leslie Coleman; grandchildren, Tyler, Erin, Jacob, Sara, Joe, Sam, Savannah, Reilley, McKenna; 10 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Cleave and Eva Hammontree; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mrs. Biddle will be held Saturday, June 23, 2018, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, Covington, with Rev. Richard Culpepper officiating. Sammy Brewer of Atlanta, passed away June 18, 2018, at the age of 47. Sammy loved his church family and was an active and supportive member of Metron Community. A music enthusiast, he enjoyed playing piano and ukulele, and he loved to sing gospel music. Sammy's other hobbies included gardening and cooking. He had a strong sense of family and shared a unique bond with his siblings; Sammy was the glue that held them all together. His quick wit and humorous disposition earned him the title of "family comedian". Gifted with a personality that was both magnetic and charming, Sammy had a way of making everyone feel special. His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty May (Ray) Brewer; and brother, Joseph Tyler Brewer.

 

Survivors include his sisters and brothers-in-law, Stephanie and Joey Ralston, Darlene and Randy Carney; brothers and sister-in-law, Alex and Lisa Brewer, Alvin Brewer; several nieces and nephews; as well as many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Berthalene Hanson Richardson of Social Circle, passed away June 19, 2018, at the age of 94. Mrs. Richardson, affectionately known as "Momma" to those who adored her most, enjoyed baking, sewing and singing. Her sweet treats were delicious, and people would often request to purchase her goodies! She was a faithful member of West End Baptist Church, in Social Circle. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett Lee and Mary Elizabeth (Darnell) Hanson; and five of her siblings.

Mary E. Brand

 Mary E. Brand of Oxford, passed away June 19, 2018, at the age of 92. Mrs. Brand was an active member of Oxford Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and participated in the Joy Sunday School Class. She loved her church and church family. In addition, Mrs. Brand liked traveling with the senior group known as the XYZ at her church. Her favorite hobbies included vegetable and flower gardening. Mrs. Brand loved her family and enjoyed doing activities with them. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Brand; parents, Frank and Ellen Elder; and eight siblings.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Lynn Miller; son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Kim Brand, all of Oxford; grandchildren, Amy Norton, Jan Miller, Jill Stephens, Erin Holbrook, Joey Brand, Brandis Garmon, Christopher Brand; 17 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Bill Lanier, of Buckhead; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

obit for Joyce Dale Mecca

 

Joyce Dale Mecca peacefully passed away June 18, 2018 at the age of 77, after a brave battle with cancer.  A lifelong resident of Conyers, GA, Joyce was a graduate of Rockdale County High School. She was the Senior Chaplain of the Atlanta World War II Roundtable, as well as a Stephen Minister, leader and teacher who was also involved in Honor Flight of Conyers.  In honor of Joyce, Brigadier General Rich McPhee will play 'Amazing Grace' on the bagpipes during her funeral on June 23, 2018, 2:00 P.M., at Conyers First Methodist Church, 921 North Main Street.  Joyce was a kind, loving person with a smile that could light up a room.  She enjoyed reading, Native American history, flowers and had an avid love for animals. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Gladys McDonald; and sister, Carole McDonald Stephenson.

 

Joyce is survived by her husband and best friend, Pete Mecca; and daughters, Susan Hillman, Lisa Clay Tarleton and Lisa Mecca Brown; grandchildren, Matthew Tanner and girlfriend, Brooklynn Dossey, Rebecca Tanner, Cody Tarleton and partner Robert McGarity, Tara Menninger and husband, Jonathan; great-grandchildren, Violet Menninger, Wyatt Menninger; niece, Melody LeCount; honorary niece, Caron Pendleton; dearest friends, Bill LeCount, Kim Ahmed, Bobbi Hicks, and Midge McCullough; and fur babies, Sulee, Sniper, Huey, Twinkie, Hank, and sweet Lilly, who never left her side.

Francis "Fran" George Faxon

Francis "Fran" George Faxon of Social Circle, passed away June 17, 2018, at the age of 90. Mr. Faxon proudly served his country for 20 years in the US Navy during WWII, Korean conflict, and Vietnam conflict. A patriotic American and servant to people, he taught ROTC at Penn State. He retired at the age of 88 as a building official for Greene County, GA. Mr. Faxon was a member of Kiwanis Club, American Legion, Children of the American Revolution, Elks Club, LOABA, as well as president of Fran Faxon Scholarship Program. He was preceded in death by his son Robert Lewis; and parents.

 

Survivors include his beloved wife, Maudine Faxon; daughter and son-in-law, Renee and Glen Criswell; sons and daughters-in-law, Russell A. Sr., and Sharell Lewis, Anthony and Terrie Lewis; 13 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.

Wallace R. (Bud) Satterfield, Sr.

Wallace R. "Bud" Satterfield, Sr., of Oxford, passed away June 16, 2018, at 89 years of age.  An avid hunter and gardener, Mr. Satterfield enjoyed taking care of his animals and riding his tractor.  One of his favorite pastimes was watching Westerns on T.V.  Mr. Satterfield was a member of Oxford Lions Club as well as Telephone Pioneers of America, and will be remembered as a man who never met a stranger. He loved his family and treasured the time he spent with them.  Mr. Satterfield was preceded in death by his loving wife, Carol (Breedlove) Satterfield; parents James and Gladys (Cauthon) Satterfield; and brother, John F. Satterfield.

 

Survivors include his daughter, Virginia (Satterfield) Kines of Oxford; son, Wallace Reno "Butch" Satterfield, Jr.; grandchildren, Lee and Windy Byrd of Covington, W.R. Charles "Charlie" Scarbrough

Charles "Charlie" Scarbrough of Covington, GA, passed away June 16, 2018, at the age of 82. Mr. Scarbrough was a 1957 graduate of Florida State University. In 1972 Charles and his life partner, Edna, moved to New Orleans, LA, where they raised their four children. After retiring from the Food and Drug Administration in 1999 with 38 plus years of service, he and his wife moved back to Georgia where they became long-time members of Starrsville United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Edna Snider Scarbrough; parents, Morris H. Scarbrough and Emma Lee Gibbs Scarbrough; sister, Joyce Bradford.  

 

Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-laws, Cynthia and Dale Colburn, Sandra and Matthew Ives, Pamela and Miguel Barrosse; son and daughter-in-law, David and Kearstin Scarbrough; grandchildren, Jeffrey Colburn, Hannah Colburn, Douglas Colburn, JoBeth Campbell, Mia Campbell, Elijah Charles Scarbrough; sister, Betty Pickens; many nieces and nephews, and many more loving family and friends.

Mike Hendrick

Mike Hendrick of Monroe, passed away June 11, 2018, at the age of 57. He was born in Fort Campbell, Kentucky making him an official Army brat. His early childhood was spent in Charlotte, North Carolina until the family moved to Georgia where he spent the rest of his life. Mike was an enthusiastic hunter that loved nothing better than being in the woods, or as he called it, his "church." He loved animals – especially his dog, Conway. Mike was gun collector and a big fan of Westerns, John Wayne was a favorite. He was also an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs. He was preceded in death by his mother, Margie Ann Hendrick.

Arthur Lee "Dooley" Almond

Arthur Lee "Dooley" Almond of Covington, passed away June 12, 2018, at the age of 78. A devoted Christian and ordained deacon, Mr. Almond was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church. He proudly served in the United States Army and the National Guard. Mr. Almond enjoyed fishing and was a volunteer for the Porterdale Fire Department. In addition, he coached men's softball. Mr. Almond was a strong family man and loved his family – especially his grandchildren. He was preceded in death his loving wife of 57 years, Clara Ruth Almond; granddaughter, Leah Ruth Almond; father, J.W. Almond; mother, Lucille Alexander; siblings, James Almond, Lizzie Harper, and Josie Smith.

Ann M. Dunehew

Ann M. Dunehew of Covington, passed away June 10, 2018, at 80 years of age.  After 20 plus years of dedicated service, Mrs. Dunehew retired from Georgia Tech, where she served as an Executive Assistant.  She cherished her family and will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.  Mrs. Dunehew was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Louis and Margaret Josephine (Hilliard) Markwell.

 

Survivors include her devoted husband of 58 years, Glenn D. Dunehew, Sr.; sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn and Nila Dunehew, Chuck and Linda Dunehew; seven grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and Frank Cowgill; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Alice V. Brown, age 90, of passed away June 9, 2018. Of the Baptist faith, Mrs. Brown was known for her strength, independence, and love of family. During retirement, she gave her time and shared her compassion for others by volunteering. Mrs. Brown served as a volunteer at the Newton Hospital Gift Shop for many years. She also worked as a monitor on a Special-Education bus for over 10 years. Her hobbies reflected her youthful spirit; she liked camping, traveling - especially trips to the beach, and going on cruises. Additionally, Mrs. Brown loved to play bingo and enjoyed dining out with friends and family. For the last 12 years, she was provided care by her daughter, Virginia Hanson.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Steve Hanson; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Jean Skinner, Dean and Patricia Skinner; 7 grandchildren; as well as 11 great-grandchildren.

Sandra Nasworthy, age 70, of Covington, passed away Saturday, June 9, 2018. Mrs. Nasworthy was born and raised in Rockdale County and was retired from Lithonia Lighting. She had a caring heart and was a constant source of love and support for family and friends. An avid reader, Mrs. Nasworthy enjoyed time spent with family - either relaxing at the beach or taking a trip to Disney World. She will be remembered as a devoted wife and a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Mrs. Nasworthy was preceded in death by her parents, William Lon and Helen (Kersey) Gilbert.

 

Survivors include her loving husband of 46 years, Gene Nasworthy, Sr.; daughter, Christy Nasworthy; son, Gene Nasworthy, Jr.; step-daughter, Deborah Edwards: grandchildren, Xander Nasworthy, Conner Nasworthy, Rebecca and Ryan Walker, Mikey Edwards, Tonya Brashear; great-grandchildren, Tyler Walker, Seth Walker, Hayden Walker, Daisy Walker, Dakota Walker, Kas Brashear, Tori Edwards, Tra Edwards, Trinton Edwards; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and J.D.  Coursey; brothers, Benjamin Gilbert, Billy Gilbert; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mildred B. Moncrief of Social Circle, passed away June 6, 2018, at the age of 83. Mrs. Moncrief was a thoughtful, caring and giving person who enjoyed making others happy. Her favorite hobbies were quilting, sewing and doing crossword puzzles. Mrs. Moncrief will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Buddy Moncrief; and parents.

Jose R. Castro

Jose R. Castro of Covington, passed away June 3, 2018, at the age of 65. Mr. Castro turned his life over to God on June 21, 2003. He became an ordained Pentecostal Christian Pastor in 2010, and later became the pastor of Tabernacolo el Refugio. Mr. Castro loved to preach and was a great example to everyone. He was a very intelligent, hardworking man and was an excellent teacher. In addition to reading the Bible, he enjoyed listening to music. Mr. Castro will be remembered as a dedicated pastor, loving father, husband, grandfather, son and brother. He was preceded in death by his father, Jose Castro; and brother-in-law, Haroldo Castro.

Jennifer Christian

Jennifer Christian of Covington, passed away June 2, 2018, at the age of 42. Jennifer was a member of Hope and Life Fellowship and often enjoyed worshipping at Passion City Church in Atlanta. She was employed by Deon Cannon Realty and for numerous years worked at Tarkenton Financial. Jennifer was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She was a loving, compassionate, and kind soul who sought opportunities to serve others and show people the love of Christ. Jennifer's love for her nieces and nephews was apparent through her adoration and affection. She was very active in her church small group where she made lifelong friends and a wonderful support system. Her love of Christ was shown through her daily walk and love for others. Jennifer had many friends who were more like family and who loved her unconditionally. She enjoyed volunteering for The Light House Family Retreat and was a mentor for those battling brain cancer. She was preceded in death by her mother, Linda King Frazier.

 

Survivors include her sisters and brothers-in-law, Tina Barnett, Cheryl and Robbie Osborne, Teresa and Mike Carter, Tammy and Danny Farmer, Carol and Tony Kitchens; brothers and sisters-in-law, Roy and Shanna Christian, Joshua and Barbara Christian; father, Roy D. Christian, Sr.; twenty nieces and nephews; twenty great-nieces and great-nephews; and best friend, Kasey Deutsch.

 

A Funeral Service for Jennifer will be held Tuesday, June 5, 2018, 11:00 AM, at Hope and Life Fellowship, 3594 Centerville Highway in Snellville, with Pastor Tony Brock officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park, in Covington.
