Lisa DeLong

Lisa DeLong of Rutledge, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2020, at the age of 51. Lisa put her family and friends' needs before her own. She often joked about being a psychiatrist because she loved listening to and helping others. Lisa devoted her life to her children and was a caregiver to her mother, her best friend. Besides spending time with her family, Lisa loved caring for her pets. She was often found snuggled up with her dog, Daisy, watching a Hallmark movie. Lisa was preceded in death by her father, Lonnie Ronald Pruitt; mother, Margaret Dale Benton.

 

Survivors include her husband, Robert Allen DeLong, Jr.; daughter and son-in-law, Samantha and Cody Faircloth; son, Robert Allen DeLong, III; step-mother, Judy Pruitt; brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Jan Pruitt; nieces, Hailey Mellott and her husband, Josh, Brittany Germany and Leah Pruitt.

Jean Buchanan, age 78, of Oxford, passed away Wednesday, February 26, 2020. Faith and family were the cornerstones and the foundation upon which her life was built. Mrs. Buchanan was steadfast in her Christian faith and was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Covington. Her commitment to family was evident in all facets of her life as she was known for her deep devotion to her husband, children and grandchildren. Mrs. Buchanan liked to travel – cruises being her go-to for relaxing and seeing new places – and she always looked forward to outings with her daughters, which typically consisted of shopping for clothes and shoes. She was preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Ruth Tackett; sister, Patty Foster; and brothers, Eddie Tackett, Gary Tackett.

Those who will hold close to their hearts the memory of Mrs. Buchanan are her husband of 59 years, Bill Buchanan; daughters and sons-in-law, Diana B. and Walt Roberts, Angela B. and Rusty Carter; grandchildren, Shauna Jones, Melissa Cowan, Nick Carter; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Ruth Chance, Mary Lou Isom, Sandra Starnes, Janice Ewing, Pam Feldt; brother, Randy Tackett; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Margaret Benton, daughter of Guy and Florene James, was born October 6, 1947. Margaret went home to her Lord and Savior, Monday, February 24, 2020. After years of battling COPD, she passed away peacefully at her home in Rutledge, Georgia. Family meant everything to Margaret. She was a caregiver who always put the needs of others before her own. Those that knew her best would describe her as gentle, kind, and generous. Margaret will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lisa DeLong; parents, Luther Guy and Grace Florene (Streetman) James; brother, Benjamin James, and sister, Millie Morris.

 

Left to remember Margaret with love and admiration is her son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Jan Pruitt; grandchildren and their spouses, Hailey and Josh Mellott, Samantha and Cody Faircloth, Leah Pruitt, Allen DeLong; as well as sisters, Eva Barrentine, Debbie Ethridge, Jeanett Morris.

Betty Freeman Copeland

Betty Freeman Copeland of Douglasville, formerly of Covington, passed away Sunday, February 23, 2020, at the age of 94. Mrs. Copeland was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Covington, Georgia. She served as president of the Edna Miller Circle, president and Secretary of the Callie Cohen Circle, member of the Christian Fellowship Class and volunteered in the altar and tape ministries. Mrs. Copeland was president of The Green Thumb Garden Club and a member of the Covington Circle Guild. For pleasure, she loved to travel, entertain and play bridge. She was a member of several bridge clubs.  

 

Mrs. Copeland was preceded in death by her husbands, Tom Freeman and Weldon Copeland. Surviving are her daughters, Mary Ann Isbill, Rebecca Freeman, and Cathy Shannon; son-in-law, Ron Isbill; sons, Donald Copeland and Harry Copeland; daughters-in-law, Margaret Copeland and Dianne Copeland; grandchildren, Brent Isbill, Brad Isbill, Andrea Miller, Jennifer Mask, Brandon Copeland, Garrison Copeland, and Abigail Copeland; and eleven great-grandchildren.

 

A Graveside Service for Mrs. Copeland will be held Thursday, February 27, 2020, 2:30 P.M., in Lawnwood Memorial Park, 1111 Access Road, in Covington, with Brent Isbill officiating. obit for Tim (Sam) Hopkins

 

Tim (Sam) Hopkins, age 72, of Monroe, passed away Wednesday, February 19, 2020. Mr. Hopkins was a lifelong resident of Newton County and a proud veteran of the United States Air Force. He had a deep devotion and was dedicated to his country, family and sports of all kinds. Mr. Hopkins' athletic talents were on display as he pursued his love of baseball during his high school and college career. He was even recognized as an all-state catcher while playing for Newton County High School. Proud of his southern roots, Mr. Hopkins immersed himself in many things related to southern culture, including his search for "hole-in-the-wall" restaurants featuring classic comfort food. Mr. Hopkins was curious and inquisitive in nature, and his quest for knowledge was always present, with ancestry being of special interest. He was an attentive grandfather who loved to cheer on his grandchildren whenever they played sports, and he also enjoyed spending time with his cousins - oftentimes eating out and catching up on the latest news. Mr. Hopkins was preceded in death by his parents, George Perry and Sadie (Morton) Hopkins.

 

Mr. Hopkins, and the memories he created, will be cherished by many, especially his wife, Judy Peters Hopkins; daughter and son-in-law, Libby and Tim Chambers; sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Lori Hopkins, Pete Peters, Wes and Kathy Peters, Joey and Cassie Peters; grandchildren, Nick Chambers, Haylee Peters, Grayson Hopkins, Tripp Peters, Emma Peters, Haley Hopkins, Zelda Peters, Maddie Peters, Tallulah Peters, Georgia Peters; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Mac Hays; nieces and their spouses, Neely and Richard Pratt, Leigh and Shane Cloudt; as well as his beloved fur babies, Cooper and Ziggy.

Christine Mary Brooks

Christine Mary Brooks of Social Circle, passed away after a short illness surrounded by her loving family, Monday, February 17, 2020, at the age of 76. Mrs. Brooks was a faithful member of The Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. She was a dedicated nurse for many years at Athens Regional Hospital before retiring. Mrs. Brooks had a special place in her heart for animals and enjoyed knitting, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Doris Gunns; sister, Peggy Lowe; and brother, Patrick Gunns.

 

Christine is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Steve C. Brooks; her four children, Rosemary Pizza (former husband, Vincent), Mark Brooks (wife, Dawn), Amy Stevens (husband, Mark), Russell Brooks (wife, Stacey); grandchildren, Zachary Pizza, Matthew Stevens, Isabella Pizza, Madison, Jenna Claire and Connor; several nieces and nephews; as well as furbabies, Pippa, Tiddles and Chester.

As a young man growing up in Porterdale, Ronny loved to play softball, and he continued his passion for sports as an enthusiastic fan of the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Braves. Gifted with a witty sense of humor, Ronny knew the art of telling a good story and was quick to capture the attention of his audience. He had a love and passion for all genres of music and was known for making the most out of life. Ronny will be remembered for his charismatic personality, his selfless spirit, and his ability to always have a good time. He was preceded in death by his son, Nick Jones; mother, Frances Jones; and brothers, Jimmy Jones, Todd Jones, and Bruce Jones.

William (Billy) C. Roberts, Jr., age 73, of Covington, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2020. Mr. Roberts was a lifelong resident of Newton County who carved out a life that was centered around family and community. He happily devoted his free time to nurturing and building relationships with his children and grandchildren. Mr. Roberts looked forward to meals and fellowship with loved ones, gatherings to celebrate the holidays, and sharing his passion for catfishing with his grandchildren. He was woven together with qualities that made him easy to admire and respect. Mr. Roberts had a strong will, a heart of gold, and an inclination to give without expectations. In addition to his family and fishing, he loved football and was a loyal and avid fan of the Crimson Tide. Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by his parents, Cliff and Rosa Roberts; sisters, Carolyn Roberts Bunn, Bobbie Roberts Parham; brother, Johnny Roberts; as well as his beloved fur baby, Bailey.

 

Mr. Roberts will be remembered by those who knew and loved him, especially his wife of 51 years, Carolyn M. Roberts; daughter, Christie Roberts Moore; son and daughter-in-law, Cliff and Nicole Roberts; grandchildren, Walker, Will; sisters and brothers-in-law, Eunice and Bill Smith; Betty and Dr. Tom Brown; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Wilma Jean Clark

Wilma Jean Clark, age 82, of Oxford, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2020. Strongly rooted in her faith and an active member of First Baptist Church of Covington, Mrs. Clark counted her church friends as family, and she loved them just the same. She drew others in with her happy nature and warm smile – not to mention her desire for putting others first.  Mrs. Clark liked to travel with her children and grandchildren, and she enjoyed reunions with her former roommates and friends from Calhoun. She will be remembered as a caring and attentive wife, mother, grandmother and friend.  Mrs. Clark was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Doyle Clark; parents, Merrill and Susie Tennessee (Taylor) Moss; seven sisters; and one brother.

 

The memories Mrs. Clark created will be held close in the hearts of many, especially her daughter and son in law, Sonya and Sean Shea; son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Rachael Clark; grandchildren, Taylor and Adam Garner, Madison Shea, Katherine Ellstrom, Mary-Grace Ellstrom: great-grandchildren, Oakleigh Garner, Kinsleigh Garner; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Charles Brent Boling

Charles Brent Boling of Loganville, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2020, at the age of 77. Mr. Boling was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans organization. He also volunteered at ALS events, and liked listening to the singing at the American Legion. In Mr. Boling's spare time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, exercising, listening to old country music and eating at his favorite place, Stalvey's Restaurant. Having a sweet tooth, he delighted in ice cream and Werther's Original candy. Mr. Boling was a family man and loved spending time with his grandchildren and teaching them how to shoot guns. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria (Simpson) Boling; son, Brad Curtis Boling; parents, Herman Curtis and Martha Mae Boling; brother, Robert Mercer Boling.

Jean Hollingsworth

Jean Hollingsworth of Porterdale, passed away Friday, February 7, 2020, at the age of 88. Ms. Hollingsworth was a faithful member of Julia A. Porter United Methodist Church, where she was very active before becoming ill. One of the things she enjoyed most was showering those she loved with gifts; especially her homemade divinity. After many dedicated years, Ms. Hollingsworth retired from Crawford W. Long Hospital. She loved spending time with her family and church family and will be missed by all who knew her. Ms. Hollingsworth was preceded in death by her parents, W.M. and Ella Mae Hollingsworth; sisters, Nan Franklin, Bearnice Mathis; brothers-in-law, Ellis Adams, Howard Mathis.

 

Survivors include her sister, Helen Adams; nieces, Lynn Lajzer, Teresa Higginbotham, Shelley Hawley, Natalie Reece; as well as numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews and cousins.

 

A Funeral Service for Ms. Hollingsworth will be held Sunday, February 9, 2020, 2:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Roger Cato and Mr. Bill Norton officiating and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home, Saturday, February 8, from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M.

Carl Edward Hyder

Carl Edward Hyder of Covington, passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2020, at the age of 57. Carl was a graduate of Redan High School in Lithonia. A man strong in his Christian faith, he was down-to-earth and enjoyed the simple things in life like horses, NASCAR, Cher, sweets and traveling to the Virgin Islands. Carl loved his dog, "Girl", his truck, family and friends and will be missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Nevaeh; mother, Neomi Fletcher; father, Larry Edward Hyder.

 

Survivors include his daughters, Ashleah Lucas and husband, Lee, Brandi Hyder and significant other, Jessie Johnson; grandchildren, Tyles Gage, Mariah, Keleah, Parker, Solara, Luna; brother, Kyle Fletcher; aunt, Wanda Hood; uncle, Gary Hood; other family friends, Donna and Woody Grainger, Jacob Grainger, Tina Jenkins, Donnie Lee Hardigree, Lisa Harper, Andrew Harper.

 

A Celebration of Life for Carl will be held at a later date.

Rickey Duncan - Updated date & time

Rickey Duncan of Social Circle, passed away Monday, February 3, 2020, at the age of 52. Rickey was the vice president of Rockdale Pipeline, Inc and previously, the president of Walton County Booster Club. He enjoyed cooking and was always looking for new recipes that he could try. A family-oriented man, Rickey was happiest spending time with his children and supporting them in their sports activities.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 20 years, Lane Duncan; daughters and son-in-law, Clarice Amber and Jeremy Robinson, Cheyenne Elizabeth Duncan; sons, John Paul Duncan, Troy Duncan; grandchildren, Emily Robinson, Abigail Robinson; parents, Paul and Jo Duncan, Mary and David Mitchell; sisters and brothers-in-law, Charlotte and Brad Garrett, Traci Duncan, Tracey and Mike Meadows, Samantha and Todd Collier; brother, Joseph Winkler; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

obit for Glenn Dunehew

 

Glenn Dunehew, age 83, of Lawrenceville, passed away Sunday, February 2, 2020. The eldest of seven children, Mr. Dunehew proudly served in the Medical Corps of the United States Army, a non-combat specialty branch of the United States Army Medical Department. He was stationed in Germany for the duration of his tour which lasted five years. Mr. Dunehew was a faithful member of C3 Church Atlanta and, in his stewardship as a Christian, he served at two different churches as both a deacon and an elder for over thirty years. He was a family man in the truest sense, and time spent with his wife and children brought him immense joy. Mr. Dunehew's hobbies demonstrated his varied interests. He enjoyed collecting pharmaceutical items - old and new, and he liked to do woodworking, with a focus on crafting walking canes and refinishing furniture. Additionally, Mr. Dunehew and his wife, Ann, took an interest in training dogs, specifically boxers, for show competitions. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Ann M. Dunehew; and parents, Sigle Calvin and Mamie (Malone) Dunehew.

 

Mr. Dunehew will be lovingly and remembered by his sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn, Jr., and Nila Dunehew of Lawrenceville, GA, Charles and Linda Dunehew of Acworth, GA; sisters and brother-in-law, Dorothy Grewe, Joyce Cassidy, both of Colorado Springs, CO, Linda and Sam Duckworth of Caruthersville, MO, Rebecca Cole of Bragg City, MO; brothers and sisters-in-law, Billy and Jane Dunehew of Dittmer, MO, John and Paula Dunehew of Stone Mountain, GA; as well as seven grandchildren.

 

A Funeral Service for Mr. Dunehew will be held Thursday, February 6, 2020 1:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor David Spell and Pastor Wayne Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park, Covington. Friends may visit with his family at the funeral home, one hour prior to his service, from 12:00 Noon – 1:00 P.M.

obit for Michael Walden


Michael Walden, age 60, of Tucker, passed away Friday, January 31, 2020. Michael was a man with a strong will and a soft heart. He was the rock of his family, and he had a unique ability for putting his loved ones at ease during difficult times. Michael always knew just the right thing to say – whether it was to tell a joke or offer advice. Outside of his role as a caring father, grandfather, and brother, he was known to give selflessly to others in need, wanting nothing in return. Michael lived for any chance to fish, had a passion for roadsters, and he was able to fix and repair most anything. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and May Lou Walden; and sisters, Sherry Zohbe, Debbie Letta.

 

Those who will remember Michael with love and admiration are his daughter, Fawn Walden of Strongsville, OH; son, Josh Walden of Tucker, GA; grandchildren, Connor Dunn, Michael Dunn, both of Strongsville, OH, Eden Walden-Urlea of Norcross; and brother and sister-in-law, Sam and Kim Walden of Conyers, GA.

obit for Kathy Lowry

Kathy Lowry, age 72, of Covington, passed away Friday, January 31, 2020. Although Kathy grew up in Atlanta, she called Covington home for the past forty-one years. After marrying her high school sweetheart, Ronnie, she lived on various Army bases during her husband's military training prior to his tour in Vietnam. Gifted with a selfless nature and caring presence, Kathy had a had a way of uplifting others. She demonstrated an unconditional love and deep devotion to her family, leaving no doubt that they were the center of her world. Kathy's artistic genius lent itself to many endeavors, including selling her creations at craft shows and sharing her talents with friends. She inspired the imaginations of the children of Eastridge Community Church, where she was a vital member and took a special interest in working with the children's ministry. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Helen (Richardson) Smith; and sister, Shirley Pugh.

 

Kathy's memory will be held close in the hearts of many, especially her husband of 54 years, Ronnie Lowry; daughter, Regina Lowry; sons and daughter-in-law, Joshua and Erin Lowry, all of Covington; Jonathan Lowry of Alpharetta; seven grandchildren; brothers and sister-in-law, Tommy and Michelle Smith of Covington, Ray Mobley of Stockbridge; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Memorial Visitation for Kathy will be held Monday, February 3, 2020, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M., at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington.
