With great sorrow, the family of Harriett Harman Kitchens, announces her passing on April 18, 2020, at her home in North Covington. She was almost 87 years old.
Harriett Harman was the youngest of four children. She was raised by her mother, Mary Jo Harper Harman, and her stepfather, Firth Harman, in the Rivers Hill community between North Covington and Oxford, Georgia. She attended Palmer Stone Elementary School, Covington High School, and North Covington Methodist Church.
Harriett married Bill Kitchens in 1951. Bill served 20 years in the U. S. Air Force, and they lived in Anchorage, Alaska; Savannah, Georgia; Seymore, Tennessee; and Aberdeen, Mississippi, before returning to their hometown of Covington, Georgia. Bill died in January 2010.
Harriett worked for Belk Department store, in Covington, for several years and at Ruth's Diner, in Covington. She also served the Newton County Sheriff's department part time in caring for and transporting women and children. Harriett brought joy and love to all her family and friends. She loved music and liked to dance. She also enjoyed gardening and spending "Mema" time with her grandchildren.
Harriett Kitchens is survived by three sons, Skipper (Gina) Kitchens, Bob (Barbara) Kitchens, and Joe (Alison) Kitchens; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; sister, Scottie Harman Edwards; sisters in-law, Mary Hester Harman, Janet Curtis Abbott-Kitchens; eight nieces; and lots of friends.
A private graveside service will be held at Lawnwood Memorial Park, in Covington. Due to the current coronavirus pandemic recommendations, the family regrets that the service must be private. A celebration of Harriett's life with family and friends will be held in Covington at a later date.
