Winston Rachels of Covington, passed away July 20, 2012, at the age of 84. As a veteran of the United States Air Force, he proudly served his country during World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church, in Covington, where he was also active with the senior adult group, the "3 R's". In addition, he was member of the American Legion Post #32, Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks Lodge #1806, and the Covington Lion's Club. He was a residential building contractor for many years, and an over the road truck driver for Madison Industries. He enjoyed fresh water fishing, deer hunting, and scuba diving. He loved children, and especially enjoyed watching little league baseball. Mr. Rachels was preceded in death by his son, Wiley Rachels; parents, Wiley and Gertie (Ivey) Rachels; and his sisters, Bonnie Andrews and Annette Davis.
Survivors include his wife, Lula Vaughn Smith Rachels of Covington; daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Sid Sellars of Dunwoody; sons and daughters-in-law, Rod and June Rachels of Mansfield, Winston and Winnye Roach of Tulsa, OK, Wayne and Pam Vaughn of Covington; sisters and brother-in-law, Jane and Don Bush of Hoschton, Mary Stanton of Jefferson, Girlene Barnes of Hogansville; grandchildren, Michelle and Bobby Dunning, Josh and Ginger Rachels, Jennifer Schmidt, Tonya and Donnie Coe, Dusty and Dixie Hilton; great-grandchildren, Shane Rachels, Kayla Sellars, Amber Rachels, Crystal Dunning, B.J. Dunning, Dylan Coe, Dawson Coe; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Mr. Rachels will be held Sunday, July 22, 2012, 3:00 PM, at First Baptist Church, with Rev. Jack Wilson and Rev. Len Strozier officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Saturday, July 21, from 5:00-7:00 PM.
