Obit - Jack Griffin

Jack Griffin, of Monticello, passed away September 30, 2012, at the age of 83.  Mr. Griffin retired in 1994 from Kysor-Warren after 40 years of service.  He enjoyed traveling, cooking during the holidays, camping, crafting, fishing, gardening, animals, and working with flowers. He was a volunteer with the Salvation Army, nursing homes, and the Covington Chapter of the AARP.  He also enjoyed helping with Relay for Life. Mr. Griffin was a deacon at Gleaners Baptist Church in Atlanta. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, father-in-law, brother and friend to many.  Mr. Griffin was preceded in death by his wives, Patsy (Strickland) Griffin and Eva Geneva (Kerlin) Griffin; and parents John William Griffin and Mattie Geneva (Head) Griffin.

 

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Danny Lewis of Monticello; sons and daughter-in-law, Jack (Sammy) and Barbara Griffin of Social Circle, Anthony (Andy) Griffin of Monticello, Jason Griffin of Acworth; grandchildren, Jennifer Griffin, Casey and Melinda Lewis, Corey and Allison Lewis, Lauren Griffin, Josh Griffin, Malachi Griffin, Gabby Griffin, Zechariah Griffin;  great-grandchildren, Ethan Lewis, Ansleigh Lewis, Brayden Lewis, and Cody Griffin; brother and sisters-in-law, Almon and Thelma Griffin of Monroe, Estelle Griffin of East Point; brother-in-law, Lavern Kerlin of Conyers; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Griffin will be held Tuesday, October 2, 2012, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Andy Parker officiating, and interment following in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery, Jackson Lake Road in Monticello.  The family will receive family and friends at the funeral home Tuesday, October 2, 2012, from 12:00 to 2:00 PM.

Sue Astin Truelove, passed away peacefully at Blue Ridge Hospice in Winchester, Virginia, September 26, 2012, at the age of 82.  Sue was a devoted wife, loving mother, and adoring grandma. She graduated from Commercial High School in 1947.  In her youth she was an active member of Capital View Baptist Church in Atlanta.  She played the French horn with the school marching band and studied piano for thirteen years.  Over the years she was employed by various government agencies, namely the IRS, FAA and the CDC in Atlanta.  Sue was preceded in death by her husband, H. Alvin Truelove; her parents Alva Clinton and Lilly Pearl Astin; sisters, Ruth Lovejoy and Beverly Nance; and brother, Alva Clinton Astin, Jr.

 

Survivors include her four children, Pam, Kay, Ray and Ben; seven grandchildren, Gabe, David, Amy, Matt, Daniel, Brian and Jacob; and two great-grandchildren, Vanessa Noelle and Addison McCall; and sister, Laura Astin of Forest Park, GA.

 

Funeral Services for Sue will be held Monday, October 1, 2012, 11:00 AM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Adam Cooper officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends and family at the funeral home Sunday, September 30, 2012, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.  Flowers are accepted, or donations may be made in her honor to your local church, charity of choice, or to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork Street, Winchester, Virginia 22601.

Grace L. Woodruff of Porterdale, passed away September 27, 2012, at the age of 91. Mrs. Woodruff was born in Butts County, and was a longtime resident of Porterdale for 67 years. She loved her family, and enjoyed cooking and taking care of her household. Mrs. Woodruff was preceded in death by her parents, William Mick and Emma Lee (Leverette) Lynch.

 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Earl Tolleson of Newborn; son and daughter-in-law, R.F. (Butch) and Deborah Woodruff of Covington; sister, Alma Fisher of Porterdale; brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Ann Lynch of Covington; grandchildren, Teresa Tolleson, Deidra Harper, Robin Herron; great-grandchildren, Destiny Harper, Tommy Herron; several nieces and nephews.

Rhonda Davis of Loganville, passed away September 26, 2012, at the age of 54. Rhonda enjoyed traveling, vacationing at the beach, spending time on her computer, and reading - especially books by her favorite author, Johanna Lindsey. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend to many. Rhonda cherished her family dearly, and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Obit - Wayne Kenton Fair

Wayne Kenton Fair of Covington went to be with the Lord September 24, 2012.  He was 70 years of age at the time of his death.  Mr. Fair was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Retha (Oswalt) Fair; sisters, EvaJeane Thompson and Norma Gaubatz.  He loved God, his family, serving in his church, and singing in the choir.  He enjoyed traveling, decorating for Christmas, playing puzzle games, and watching hummingbirds.  He also loved spending quiet time in the morning on the patio with his newspaper and a good cup of coffee.

 

Mr. Fair graduated from Bowling Green State University with a BS in Business and Accounting.  For 40 years he worked as an accountant, the last 15 of which he owned his own business.  He happily retired from his company, HOWCO Business Services, in 2006.

 

Mr. Fair is survived by his wife, Nancy Fair of Covington; daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and John Richards of Canton; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Heather Fair of Waleska, Mark and Angel Fair of Augusta; grandchildren, Andrew Richards, Joshua Richards, Megan King, Matthew Richards, Taylor Fair, Clayton Fair, Lexi Fair, Emily Fair, Natalie Fair, Olivia Fair, Isabella Fair; great-grandchildren, William Richards, Tyler King, Sophia Richards.

Teresa Dianne Mask of Covington, passed away September 19, 2012, at the age of 53. Teresa enjoyed writing fiction, reading all types of books, listening to music, and working at her church. She loved the holidays, especially Christmas, but most of all she loved her family. Teresa lived for her grandchildren, and cherished the time spent with them. She was preceded in death by her father, Cleamon Knight; and her sister, Rita Smith.

Maggie Elizabeth Rainey of Covington, passed away September 18, 2012, at the age of 90. Mrs. Rainey was a member of Union United Methodist Church, in Stockbridge, where she loved her church family dearly. She enjoyed flower gardening, traveling, and spending time with her family. Mrs. Rainey was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, William Drue Rainey; parents, Frank Cleburn, Sr., and Sadie (Chandler) Almand; and her sisters, Annie Lura Young and Sarah Frances Hooten.

Obit - Rebecca "Becky" Alexander


Rebecca "Becky" Alexander, of Covington, died September 14, 2012, at the age of 88. Becky and her husband were the owners of Covington Jewelry and Alexander Memorials.  She served as the Director of Food Services for the Newton County School System.  Her cinnamon rolls and chili were legendary with school children.  She was a member of the Pilot Club and the Eastern Star.  Becky loved her family.  She loved to cook and also enjoyed traveling. She was preceded in death by her parents William Bryant and Lillie (Thomas) Dobbs; and her son Tommy Alexander.

Obit - Raymond Thompson

Raymond Wood Thompson, Jr., of Covington, passed away September 10, 2012, at the age of 84. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and watching the Atlanta Braves. Mr. Thompson was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, brother and friend to many. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Christine (Bradford) Thompson; and his parents, Raymond Wood, Sr., and Josie Pearl (Harper) Thompson.

Richard "Ricky" Speer, of Covington, died September 8, 2012, at the age of 44. Mr. Speer was co-owner of Speer Construction.  He enjoyed drag-racing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He also loved spending time outdoors. He was preceded in death by his father Aubrey Lee Speer.

Obit - James Kilpatrick

James Allen (Jimmy) Kilpatrick, passed away September 1, 2012, at the age of 63.  Mr. Kilpatrick loved to play music, especially the keyboard, was learning to play the guitar, and enjoyed collecting hand guns. He wrote computer programs for the sheet metal manufacturing business and had worked in this field for over 40 years. Mr. Kilpatrick was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Arvie Jewell (Teal) Kilpatrick.

 

Survivors include his wife, Judith Kilpatrick of Covington; daughter, Michelle Kilpatrick of Covington; sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Tommy Brown of Fayetteville; brother, Sammy P. Flynt of Tyrone; and several nieces and nephews.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. Kilpatrick will be held Saturday, September 8, 2012, 2:00 PM, at County Line Baptist Church, with Rev. J. Clifton Brown officiating.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to County Line Baptist Church, 3325 Highway 162 S, Covington, GA 30016; or Abbey Hospice, 215 Azalea Court, Social Circle, GA 30025.

Obit - Jimmy Ray allen

Family and friends mourn the loss of Jimmy "Ray" Allen, 84, of Conyers, Georgia who passed away suddenly on September 1, 2012.  Ray was born April 11, 1928 in Columbus, Georgia to the late Richard and Hallie Allen.  Ray began his professional career with Georgia Power Company at the age of 18 and would continue with the company until retiring in 1987 after 40 years.  During his employment, Ray entered the United States Army for four years and spent the majority of his time stationed in Germany.  He reached the rank of Sgt. First Class   before being honorably discharged.  After his military service, he returned to his career at Georgia Power.  Ray was the pillar and the foundation of our family.  He was a loving father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all. 

 

Ray is survived by his wife, best friend and soul mate of 32 years, Miriam; his children Amy Shealy of Snellville, Georgia; Miller Allen and wife Connie of Buckhead; Carol Allen and husband Jim of Social Circle; David Underwood of Conyers; 12 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren.  He is survived by sibling Virginia Allen of Eatonton.  He was also preceded in death by his son, Tracy Allen.

 

In celebration of Ray's life, a funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 5, 2012, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell and Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Reese Sanders officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home, Tuesday, September 4, from 6:00-8:00 PM.  Donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Social Circle (BFKG), 195 W Cherokee Road, Social Circle, Georgia, 30025.

Obit - Dorothy L. Moseley

Dorothy L. Moseley of Conyers, Georgia, passed away, September 2, 2012.  Mrs. Moseley enjoyed traveling, reading, and gardening.  She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend to many.  Ms. Moseley was preceded in death by her husband, William G. Moseley and her parents, Noah Loggins and Vada (Peck) Loggins.

 

Survivors include, daughters and sons-in-law, Janet M. Jones of Clairmont, Debra L. and James M. Burdette, III of Lawrenceville, Linda and Hoyt Bruce of Covington; son and daughter-in-law, William Michael and Elisabeth Moseley of San Diego; 3 granddaughters, 4 great-grandchildren; sister, Montine Dailey of Monroe.

 

Funeral services for Mrs. Moseley will be held Monday, September 3, 2012, 1:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Ricky Bruce officiating, and interment on September 4, 2012, 2:00PM, in Hillandale Memorial Gardens & Mausoleum, 6201 Hillandale Drive, Lithonia, GA 30058.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Monday, September 3, 2012 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

Obit - Kimberly Pippin

 

 

 

 

Kimberly Pippin, of Covington, passed away August 30, 2012.  Mrs. Pippin was a member of Gaithers United Methodist Church and enjoyed attending The Church at Covington.  She loved spending time with her family and her beloved dog, Zsha Zsha, who passed away with her.  Mrs. Pippin was loved by many.

 

Survivors include her husband, Dilmus Raymond Pippin, Jr. of Oxford; son, Dakoda Mobley of Covington; father, Ken Porter of Buford; mother and step-father, Jackie and Tom Backes of Joplin, MO; sister, Kristina Backes; brother, Colby Backes; niece, Kaileigh Gorsaic; mother and father-in-laws, Terry and Marsha Carter and Dilmus Raymond Pippin, Sr. and Shirley Pippin of Oxford, Georgia.

Mickey Moss and Evangelist Terry Carter officiating, and interment following in Porterdale Baptist Cemetery.
