Obit - Larry Glenn Scarborough


Larry Glenn Scarborough, of Dallas, passed away June 26, 2013, at the age of 65.  Mr. Scarborough was a veteran of the United States Army having served his country during the Vietnam War. He loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed playing golf, watching movies, playing his guitar, and being outside to watch storms when it rained. Mr. Scarborough was preceded in death by his loving wife of 43 years, Brenda (Fisher) Scarborough; and his parents, Fred and Martha (Hatcher) Scarborough.

Survivors include his daughter, Cindy Long of Dallas; son and daughter-in-law, Carlton and Sheryl Scarborough of Kennesaw; grandchildren, Carlton Scarborough, Jr., Daniel Long, December Long, Deirdre Long; brother, Edward Daniel Scarborough of Covington; and his sister, Joy Dyar of South Carolina.

Pansy Mae Mitchell, of Covington, passed away June 22, 2013, at the age of 86.  She was preceded in death by 5 brothers and 2 sisters.

 

Survivors include her husband, of 66 years, Roy H. Mitchell, Sr. of Covington; children and their spouses, Vivian Irene Watson of Covington, GA, Robert H. and Linda Mitchell of Mendota, VA, Roy H., Jr. and Avil Mitchell of Abingdon, VA, Marcia Karen and Doug Shelton also of Covington, GA, Brenda S. and Paul Campbell of Mansfield, GA, Teresa Lynn Mitchell of Cocoa, FL; sister and brother-in-law, Christine M. and Eddie Forbes of Mt. City, TN; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-granddaughter; numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Mitchell will be held Tuesday, June 25, 2013, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Obit - Lorene Rollins

Lorene Darby Rollins of Covington passed away June 10, 2013 at Riverside Health Care Center.  She was 99 years of age at the time of her death.  Mrs. Rollins loved playing cards, and will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many.  She was preceded in death by her husbands, Wilmer Chambers, Harvey Rollins; daughter, Barbara Chambers; and her parents, Robert Newton and Lena (Parker) Darby; 1 brother; 1 sister.

Mrs. Rollins is survived by her sister, Sara McDowell of Rockmart; brother and sisters-in-law, Wallace and Lillie Darby, of Rockmart, Martha Chambers of Covington; brother-in-law, Warren Kirkus of Oxford; niece, Pat Daniel of Covington; as well as other nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Rollins will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, June 22, 2013, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Dr. Joe Peabody officiating.  Interment will follow in Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 – 2:00 P.M.

Obit - Wiley Wilson

Wiley D. Wilson, Jr., of Oxford, passed away June 19, 2013, at the age of 84. Mr. Wilson enjoyed car racing, wood working, and traveling to both the beach and the mountains. He was a devoted husband, father, Papa and brother. He loved his family dearly, and will be missed by all who knew him. Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his parents, Wiley Daniel, Sr., and Belle (Johnson) Wilson; first wife, Mary C. Wilson; daughter, Chryl Martin; granddaughter, Dana McGlothin; brothers, Floyd Wilson, Hershel Wilson and Dorsey Wilson; and his sister, Elise Kimbrell.

Obit - Calvin Homer Worley

Calvin Homer Worley of Covington, made his journey to his heavenly home, June 18, 2013, at the age of 64. As a Marine Staff Sergeant, he proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He was a proud husband, father and grandfather that cherished his family above all else. Mr. Worley was preceded in death by his parents, Percy and Grace (Holcomb) Worley; and several siblings.

Obit - Sally "Sandy" King Pitts

Sally "Sandy" Anne King Pitts, 69, of Conyers, passed away peacefully at her home, June 17, 2013. Sandy lived life to the fullest the past two years despite the recurrence of cancer.  Sandy was a faithful member of The Church of the Good Shepherd, where she actively participated with the Daughters of the King and Altar Guild. She also served as a Lector, Vestry member, and Lay Eucharist Minister.  Recently, in 2012, she completed the Education For Ministry program with The University of the South School of Theology.  Sandy graduated from Newton High in 1962 where she was an All-State basketball player. After graduation, Sandy attended the University of Georgia and obtained her B.S. in Mathematics and M.S. in Mathematics Education.  Sandy was an exceptional high school math teacher at Coosa High School in Floyd County, Newton County High School in Covington, Social Circle High School, and Salem High School in Conyers. Sandy recently ended her career as a college professor at Athens Tech. Ms. Pitts enjoyed teaching throughout her life, was a sought after tutor, and awarded Teacher of the Year during her service at Social Circle High School. An avid bridge player, Sandy also enjoyed spending time outdoors, acting in the community theater, volunteering with the GFCW Service Guild of Covington, and spoiling her grandchildren and beloved pets.

Sandy was loved by her family, respected by her fellow teachers, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Sally (Lambe) King; and her husband, William Jerry Pitts. Survivors include her children and their spouses, Jennifer and Larry Westerman of Decatur, Jeffrey Pitts and Donna Rewalt of Durham, NC, Sherry Pitts of Atlanta, Ben Pitts of Athens; grandsons, Brennan and Collin Pitts of Durham, NC; brother and sister-in-law, Barrett and Elizabeth King of St. Mary's, GA; sister-in-laws and brother-in-law, Barbara Sue and Thomas Hendrix of Peachtree City and Mrs. Bobby (Myra) Pitts of Monroe, GA; nieces and nephews, Lisa Hawkes of Boise, ID; Barrett King, Jr., of Chesapeake, VA, Sarah King of Boise, ID, Michael King of Syracuse, NY, Robin Butler of Loganville, David Pitts of Mableton, and Denise Nadeau of Houston, TX.

Obit - Johnny Lee Harper, Sr.

Johnny Lee Harper, Sr., of Newborn, passed away June 18, 2013, at the age of 76. Mr. Harper enjoyed dancing, gambling and playing the lottery. He loved life, and cherished his family dearly. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Mae (Ralston) Harper; and his parents, Earl and Sara Lee (Christian) Harper.

Obit: James Alonzo Alexander, Sr.

Mr. James Alonzo Alexander, Sr., 77, of Conyers, Georgia, departed this life unexpectedly Friday, June 14, 2013 at Piedmont Hospital.  Jim was a great leader, businessman, husband, father, and friend.  For 42 years he was in the insurance business and founded Alexander Underwriters General Agency in 1974.  He later formed two insurance companies.  Jim made many friends in the insurance business over the years.  He retired in 1997 to enjoy traveling with friends and family.  He enjoyed fishing, boating and playing tennis.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Dallas and Lanelle Alexander; and his brother, Milton B. Alexander.

 

Survivors include his loving wife, Farris A. Alexander of Conyers; daughter and son-in law, Melissa D. and Matthew Goglia of Conyers; sons and daughters-in-law, James, Jr. and Sandie Alexander of Conyers, William A. and April Alexander of Lilburn, Gary P. and Martha Alexander of Big Canoe, GA; 10 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, C. Obit - Patricia Garrett Haymore

Patricia Garrett Haymore was born August 18, 1937 to George Coleman Garrett, Sr. and Frances Elizabeth Garrett at her family's home in Warrenton, Georgia.  Pat enjoyed a wonderful childhood growing up in a small town where everyone knew you and your family.  She was a cheerleader, played basketball and tennis, and sang solo and in the trio at literary events.  She graduated from Warrenton High School in 1955. Pat attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville and completed her matriculation at Georgia Teacher's College in 1959, the same year that it became Georgia Southern College.  She graduated with a BA degree in music education. Upon her return to Warrenton, Pat worked with the Warren County Music Club and in Thomson, Georgia for the attorney, Randall Evans until she secured a teaching position in Columbia County where she taught for three years and where she met and married Perry Britten Haymore.  Pat and Perry and their two sons, George David and Christopher Britten, returned to Covington, Georgia, Perry's hometown, in 1967.  She lived in Covington until her death. Pat taught in the Newton county school system as a chorus director at Newton County High School and Sharp Middle School.  She created and built the first chorus at Newton County High School.  Her groups consistently received superior ratings at chorus festivals, and many students were selected to All State Chorus.  Pat enjoyed teaching and seeing her students excel in their musical endeavors.  Her greatest gift was her ability to extract the best from her students.  She was highly respected throughout the state for her contributions to her profession serving as the 10th District Director of the Georgia Music Educators Association. Pat was very active in her church, First United Methodist of Covington, where she served many years as the choir director.  She was also extremely active in the Sergeant Newton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.  She served two terms as the Regent of the Chapter.  She recently served as the president of the Friends of the Library. Pat also volunteered as a Cub Scout den mother during her sons' youth. Pat died at her home Monday June 10, 2013 after a battle with leukemia. A devoted wife, mother, daughter, daughter-in-law, teacher, friend and musician, she will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her loving husband, Perry Haymore; son and daughter-in-law, David and Betty Ann (Allgood) Haymore of Covington, and their daughter, Lauren Elyse Haymore; son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Kye (Whisnante) Haymore of Mansfield, and their son, Charles Warthen Haymore; brother and sister-in-law, George Coleman Garrett, Jr., and his wife, Renee, of Waynesville, NC; nieces, Marjorie Garrett Fils and Georgiana Garrett Darsey; sister-in-law, Joann (Haymore) Paty of Victoria, British Columbia.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Haymore will be held Thursday, June 13, 2013, 11:00 AM, at the First United Methodist Church, in Covington, with Rev. Dr. Douglas Gilreath and Rev. Jan McCoy officiating, and interment following in Covington City Cemetery. Mary Nell Reynolds of Covington passed away June 10, 2013 at Social Circle Nursing and Rehab.  She was 86 years of age at the time of her death.  Mrs. Reynolds was a long-time resident of Covington and was retired from Beaver Manufacturing in Mansfield.  She enjoyed dancing, music, and making trips to Daytona Beach and the mountains.  She was of the Pentecostal Faith, and will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend to many.  Mrs. Reynolds was preceded in death by her husbands, Wayman Allen and Willard Reynolds; grandson, Matt Allen; parents Charlie and Lola (Thomas) McCullers; son-in-law, Ellis Mask; sisters, Georgia (McCullers) Cook, Ozella (McCullers) Anglin; and brothers, Jack McCullers, Bootsie McCullers, Horace McCullers, and Harvey McCullers.

 

Mrs. Reynolds is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann Mask; son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Marcia Allen; grandchildren, Byron Mask, Dwayne and Michelle Mask, Marc and April Allen, Mitch and Jennifer Allen, all of Covington; great-grandchildren, Wayne Mask, Christy Mask, Seth Allen, Sage Allen, Haven Allen, Georgie Allen, Matt Allen; great-great-grandchildren, Jordan Rosenberry, Wesley Kemp, Sonny Poss, Aiden Mask, Dylan Mask, Elan Roton; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Roy Benson Lane, Sr., of Porterdale, passed away June 6, 2013, at the age of 64. Daddy Roy, as he was affectionately known as, loved spending time with his family, fishing, playing his guitar and singing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred B. Obit - Jennifer Burkhalter

Jennifer Seago Burkhalter of Covington, passed away June 4, 2013, at the age of 45. Jennifer was a member of Zion Baptist Church, in Covington. She worked as a Special Needs teacher, for Rockdale County School System, for 21 years, and was loved and respected by her students and fellow teachers. She enjoyed crafts, sewing, and traveling to the beach; and especially loved her trip to Hawaii. Jennifer was a loving and devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, daughter-in-law, niece, cousin and friend to many. She was a selfless person, who had a passion for others, and constantly did whatever necessary to see to it that their needs were ahead of her own. Jennifer has touched so many lives, and there is no doubt that her influence will remain hereafter. She had a very kind spirit, and will be missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lennie Lee (Radford) Seago.

Obit - James Ray Montgomery

Mr. James Ray Montgomery, 74, of Covington, departed this life, Sunday, June 2, 2013, at Newton Medical Center, with his family by his side. The son of the late Mr. & Mrs. James Dorsey Montgomery, he was born in Oconee County, September 10, 1938. Ray retired from Ford Motor Company after 32 years of service. Ray was a wonderful person, with a great sense of humor, who loved his family very much. He is dearly loved, and will be missed until we meet again. Ray was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Mrs. Jewel Mays Montgomery; brothers, Lessie Eugene Montgomery, Jerry Lewis Montgomery; brother and "best bud", Grady L. Montgomery.

He leaves behind his son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Marilyn Montgomery; grandson, Ernest Montgomery; brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Judy Montgomery, Nathan and Syble Montgomery; sisters and brother-in-law, Shirley and Buster Moore, Helen Colter, Brenda Pruitt, Teresa Clark; best friend, Bob; sister-in-law, Debra Montgomery; and many nieces, nephews and friends that love him dearly.

Funeral Services for Ray will be held Wednesday, June 5, 2013, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Russell Cantrell officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday, June 4, from 2:00-8:00 PM. Ray's nephews, Matt Moore, Wess Moore, Tim Montgomery, Jerry Montgomery, Brian Montgomery and Alan Brown will serve as pallbearers.
