Obit - Richard Lee Carter

Richard Lee Carter of Walnut Grove, passed away July 29, 2014, at the age of 79. He was a faithful member of Full Gospel Holiness Church. Mr. Carter was a forklift operator, for Alsco Manufacturing, where he was a dedicated employee for 44 years. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his daughters, Lisa Marie Carter, Shirley Wilson and Mary Dyals; brother, Wilford Carter; and his parents, Alex and Minnie Ruth Carter.

 

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Clarice Carter; daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Ricky Smith of Conyers, Deborah and Tim Stone of Oxford; sons and daughters-in-law, James McDonald of Loganville, Mark and Ellen Carter of Jersey, Barry and Connie Carter of Oxford, Larry and Penny Carter, Lee and Tina Carter, all of Monroe; grandchildren, Tina Stevens of Sumter, SC, Phillip Dyals of Social Circle, Krystal Smith of Rutledge, Brittani Rogers of Covington, Dawn Day, Lisa Rosser, both of Rutledge, Candace Baker of Jersey, Brian Smith of Conyers, Jonathon Carter of Monroe, Ben Stone of Conyers, Blake Stone of Oxford, Kaylee Carter of Monroe; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Polly and Bob Stewart of Walnut Grove, Betty and Gene Henderson of Oxford; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Carter will be held Thursday, July 31, 2014, 2:00 PM, at Full Gospel Holiness Church, 3170 Highway 138 NW, in Monroe, with his son, Rev. Larry Carter officiating, and interment following in Carter Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Wednesday, July 30, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.

Matthew David (Matt) Toney, age 34, died July 22, 2014.

Funeral Services for Matt were held Wednesday, July 30, 2014, 4:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Bishop Glenn Purvis, Rev. Ed Walden and Pastor Jerry Patterson officiating. Interment followed in Lawnwood Memorial Park.

Obit - Josie (Jo) McLaney

Josie Faye (Embry) McLaney, affectionately known as "Jo", passed away July 28, 2014, at the age of 81. She was born in Rockmart, Georgia, to the late Noel and Rena (Davis) Embry. Jo was a graduate of Cedartown High School, in Cedartown, Georgia. In 1951, she married Milton (Coach Mac) McLaney, and together they moved to Monticello, where he started his coaching career, and she found her interest in floral arrangements. They moved to Newton County, in 1956, where she became active, and served as president, of the Covington Garden Club. Jo worked part-time, for several years, for Abre Sherwood of Sherwood's Flower Shop on the square. In January of 1965, she opened Covington Flower Shop in its first location on Floyd Street. The shop was very successful and grew to its new location on the east side of the square in Covington. In addition to the flower shop, she opened the Covington Flower Mart - a wholesale florist store for the public. She was well-known in the floral industry and was commentator for many years for AFS – a floral wire service that served the entire US. In addition to owning and managing a local shop, Jo taught a floral school, on the Island of CuraƧao, for several years. Along with her passion for flowers, she was very interested in the history and growth of Newton County. She was on the tourism committee, and would share her knowledge of the town's history while conducting tours. While in her original Covington Flower Shop location, she opened a souvenir shop for both the In the Heat of the Night and Dukes of Hazzard television series, which added to the tourism and interest of Covington. Jo started In the Heat of the Night reunions, and attended and promoted Dukes of Hazzard reunions that were held in Covington for many years. She made several lifelong friends who shared in her passion for these shows. She enjoyed the "spotlight" of the movies filmed in and around Covington, and even "starred" as an extra in many of those local films. She was an avid bridge player for more than 50 years. The bridge club met twice a month with each lady hosting a different Friday. Jo was a religious woman, and raised her family in the First United Methodist Church, in Covington. She later attended Screven Baptist Church, in Screven, after moving to live with her daughter, Marci. Jo valued the new friendships created while at Screven Baptist. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and her later years were spent adoring her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was cherished by many, and will be greatly missed by all those lucky to call her 'friend'.

 

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Marci and Butch Hutcheson, Susan (Sissy) and Ron Skipper; grandchildren, Ryan Marks, Allen and Natalie Martin, James and Alison (Marks) Brown, Lisa Martin, Steven Dobbs, Scott Dobbs; great-grandchildren, Collin Marks, Emily Marks, Austin Marks, Colton Mitchell, Asa Brown, Tanner Martin, Kennady Martin, Kambrie Morrow, Asher Martin; brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Diane Davis; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Jo will be held Friday, August 1, 2014, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Dr. Douglas Gilreath officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, July 31, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM.

Minnie C. Shelnutt

Minnie C. Shelnutt, age 88, of Covington, passed away July 27, 2014.  She loved working in her flower garden, and for many years was a cake baker at Jacquelyn's Bakery in Covington.  In addition, Mrs. Shelnutt was a very active member of Gaithers United Methodist Church, where she lovingly cared for children in the nursery.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Shelnutt; daughter, Deborah Terry; granddaughter, Hope Pittman; and grandson, Charles Shelnutt, Jr.

 

Survivors include her son, Charles Shelnutt of Covington; grandchildren, Laura Ghia of Duluth, Simon Shelnutt of Covington, Tina Morgan of TX, Sam Shelnutt, also of Covington; several great-grandchildren; sisters, Morine Calhoun, Edie Wilson; brothers, Roy Ayers, Roland Ayers, Arlie Ayers; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Graveside Service for Mrs. Shelnutt will be held 12:00 PM, Thursday, July 31, 2014 at College Park Cemetery with Rev. Danny Standard officiating.

Barbara Curtis DuPlessis

Barbara Curtis DuPlessis was born April 13, 1931 in Wrentham Massachusetts, to the late Perry E. and Maryann Jassamine (Smith) Curtis.  After a long illness, she passed away July 26, 2014 in Social Circle, GA, where the staff of the Mews of Social Circle and the Homestead Hospice team provided wonderful care.  Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Edouard Richard DuPlessis; daughter, Kim DuPlessis; granddaughter, Errin Vuley; and sister, Geraldine Curtis.

 

Barbara graduated in 1948 from Foxboro High School in Massachusetts, then attended Ricker College in Houlton, ME, where she met Edouard Richard DuPlessis of Bucksport, ME.  In 1952 she and her family moved to West Suffield, CT where they lived for 10 years.  They returned to Maine in 1962 and lived in Island Falls, and later East Millinocket, until 1968, when they moved to Essex Junction, VT.  In 1977 they moved to Denver, NC on Lake Norman.  Barbara returned to Essex Junction to be close to her family after the death of her husband "Eddie" in 1980.  She enjoyed many wonderful years in Port St. Lucie, FL, where she reconnected with old friends and made many new ones before moving to Covington, GA in 2011.

 

Barbara had a long history of service to others.  She worked for the Vermont Nursing Association, Vermont Transit Tours, and at Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington.  She was a volunteer at Port St. Lucie Medical Center in Florida.  Barbara was an outgoing people-oriented person, and this was reflected in her work in Welcome Wagon, sales, volunteerism, and as a caregiver for the elderly.  She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved traveling; but, most importantly, she loved spending time with her family.

 

Barbara is survived by her daughters, Lynne duPlessis Masi and her husband Gary Masi, of Loris, SC, Merry DuPlessis Vuley and her husband Arthur L. Vuley of Covington, GA, Joy duPlessis of Washington, DC; son, Arthur Perry DuPlessis and his wife Janine Fuller DuPlessis of Key West, FL; grandchildren, Elizabeth Leone of San Francisco, CA, Alyson Vuley of Stone Mountain, GA and her husband Walter Contrearas of Costa Rica, Emily Natalia Vuley of Atlanta, GA, Ethan Vuley and his wife Monica Lewis Vuley of Atlanta, GA, Jaxon Edward DuPlessis of Key West, FL; great-grandchildren, Julien Lundh and Maya Leone of San Francisco, CA, Oliver Vuley-Conlon and Sebastian Vuley-Conlon of Stone Mountain, GA, and Leo Logan Vuley of Atlanta, GA. 

 

The family will have a private Memorial Service at a later date.

Thomas Busbee, age 85, of Mansfield, passed away July 22, 2014. Mr. Busbee was a veteran of the United States Army. He attended Eastridge Community Church, was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and enjoyed fishing. Mr. Busbee was a wonderful husband, and a good father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman James and Carrie Louberta (Middlebrook) Busbee.

Obit - Max G. Kilgore

Max G. Kilgore of Covington, GA, born April 17, 1919, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on July 19, 2014, at the age of 95. He was born in Palmersville, TN, to John and Charlie Bostic Kilgore who preceded him in death along with his six siblings, Ned, Ralph (Doc), Mary, Dorothy, Annabelle and Sue. Max went to school in Palmersville, TN, until joining a CCC Camp where he worked and completed his final year of high school in Powell, TN. Max was a graduate of the University of Tennessee; and retired as Lieutenant Colonel after 26 years of service, having served in World War II and the Korean War. He continued to work for the US Army as a civilian and retired from Ft. McPherson Forces Command in Atlanta. Max loved his family and the Lord Jesus Christ. While serving overseas, he attended and supported churches in Japan, the Philippines and Germany. He modeled a strong, Christ-centered life for all of his family and friends as he took on various responsibilities in the church, including serving as a Sunday School teacher, deacon and church planner. He was instrumental in establishing a southern Baptist, English speaking church in Manila, Philippines. In his last years, Max faithfully attended the First Baptist Church in Covington.

 

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth Brann Kilgore; his four children and their spouses, Leon and Carolyn Kilgore Hayes, Charles and Nancy Kilgore Cook, Charlie and Diane McIntosh Kilgore, Greg and Malinda Hayes Kilgore; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mr. Kilgore will be held Tuesday, July 22, 2014, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Dr. Cody McNutt officiating, and interment following in Lawnwood Memorial Park. A woman of God, she was a 40-year devoted member of Macedonia Baptist Church, in Oxford, where she enjoyed singing in the choir.  She was a caregiver for multiple families in Newton County.  Mrs. Stoddard enjoyed gardening and cooking, and made the best biscuits around.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Stoddard; son, Mike Stoddard; and grandson, Andrew Stoddard.

Obit - Doris T. Mitchell Bowie

Doris T. Mitchell Bowie of Covington, passed away July 16, 2014, at the age of 93. Mrs. Bowie was a lifelong resident of Newton County, and faithful member of Voice of Pentecost, in Covington. Additionally, she was a former member of United Pentecostal Church, where she served as youth director, the ladies auxiliary leader and Sunday School Teacher. Mrs. Bowie was a published song writer and poet, and proud member of the National Poetry Society of Who's Who. She enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with those she loved. Mrs. Bowie was preceded in death by her first husband of 32 years, W.J. (Dub) Mitchell; second husband of 23 years, Roy E. "Smokey" Bowie; step-daughter, Mary B. Whittaker; and her parents, Robert C. Tankersley and Vadie Tankersley Parish.

Obit - Jesse L. Burgess

Jesse L. Burgess of Covington, passed away July 15, 2014, at the age of 75. Mr. Burgess was a member of the First Baptist Church, in Covington. He was a retired member of the Local #72 Plumbers & Pipefitters Union, after 57 years of dedicated service, all while serving as owner and operator of Alcovy Day Lily Farm for 20 years. Additionally, he was involved in the Greater Atlanta Hemerocallis Society and the Rockdale County Genealogical Society. Mr. Burgess was ordained as a Deacon, in 1963, and served in this position at many churches. A loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather, he cherished spending time with his family.

 

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary Lois Burgess; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Rick Mobley; son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Tracy Burgess; grandchildren, Nathaniel, Joshua, Aaron, Stephen, Michael, David, Hannah, Joseph, Elisabeth, Michaela and Josiah Mobley, Meagan and Samantha Burgess; great-grandchildren, Addi and Dyllon Mobley; sisters, Cora Faye Foster, Annelle Maddox, Jannelle Hadley; brother, Floyd Burgess; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A.L. Crane

A.L. Crane, of Covington, passed away July 16, 2014 at Newton Medical Center.  He was 78 years of age at the time of his death.  A.L. loved people and never met a stranger.  He was always willing to go the extra mile to help anyone who needed him.  He will be remembered as a man who loved his family.  A.L. was preceded in death by his son, Wade Crane; parents, Alvin M. and Gladys (Segars) Crane; and his former spouse, Joann Covington.

Obit - Mark Jeffries

Mark Jeffries, age 41, of Covington, passed away July 15, 2014. Mark was a true Believer who loved the Lord Jesus with all of his heart. He was an accomplished bass fisherman and loved to hunt. He had a great sense of humor, and was a talented cook, guitarist and singer. Mark enjoyed spoiling his nieces and nephews, and cherished his time with Mary McCullough, the person closest to his heart. He was loved, and will be missed by his family and friends. Mark was preceded in death by his father, William Dee "Junior" Jeffries.

 

Survivors include his beloved mother, Noami Jeffries; sweetheart, Mary McCullough; sisters and brothers-in-law, Hope and Billy McCullough, Amanda and Wes Ardiel, Christa and Josh Mann, all of Covington; nieces and nephews, Joseph, Megan and Abigail McCullough, Mayla, Naomi and Dawson Ardiel and Navia Mann.

Les Crosby

Les Crosby, of Covington, passed away July 16, 2014, at the age of 79.  Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Les moved to West Palm Beach, Florida when he was 2 years of age.  After graduating from Palm Beach High School he served four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and then attended the University of Florida, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in accounting.  He retired from AT&T after 30 years of service.  Les loved Jesus, served as a deacon, and sang in the choir. His favorite holiday was Thanksgiving.  Les played the guitar for over 50 years, but most of all, Les loved his family.  He was preceded in death by his daughter, Yvonne Czernowski; and parents, Lester Edwin and Lila (Flowers) Crosby.

Obit - Mae Hardman

Mae Hardman, of Rabun Gap, formerly of Porterdale, Georgia, passed away July 15, 2014. Mae was born November 26, 1925, to Carrie Mae (Lunsford) and William Grady Hardman. She had lived in Rabun County since 1971, where she taught at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School until her retirement. Prior to teaching, Mae was a social worker for Bibb Manufacturing Company for 27 years. She was very active in both of her communities, which she dearly loved. Mae served in many civic organizations and held positions over the years in both the Porterdale Presbyterian Church and the Rabun Gap Presbyterian Church. Mae dedicated her life to the service of God and all people with whom she had contact. She was a caring and devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She was preceded in death by her parents and only sibling, James.

 

Survivors include her two nieces, Dorothy Ellen Hardman of Fort Valley, GA, Jane Hardman Alexander of Covington; nephew, James E. Hardman, Jr., and his wife, Martha of Covington; and a great-niece, Carrie Melissa Hardman of Macon.

 

A Graveside Service for Mae will be held Saturday, July 19, 2014, 11:00 AM, at Carmel Cemetery, in Mansfield, with the Rev. Don Barber officiating. Martha Mahan

Martha Ann Mahan, of Social Circle, passed away July 16, 2014, at the age of 81.  A very dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church of Covington and the Christian Fellowship Sunday School Class, she was also a member and past president of the Callie Cowen Circle of the United Methodist Women.  Mrs. Mahan enjoyed traveling and will be remembered for her wonderful cooking.

 

She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Fred M. Obit - Alverna "Al" Kepner

Alverna "Al" Kepner, age 87, of Conyers, passed away July 14, 2014. Mrs. Kepner was a loving and devoted wife, mother and Grammy. Her husband, Herb, served in the United States Army for 21 years, and together they traveled all over the world. They raised three sons and one daughter, and were very proud of all their children. She was preceded in death by her eldest son, William "Willie" Kepner; and her brothers, Carl Ritter and Charles Ritter, Sr.

 

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Herbert Kepner; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Steve Cunningham, all of Conyers; sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Patricia Kepner of Oxford, Curtis and Linda Kepner of Villa Rica; grandchildren, Lisa, Kenny, Jessica and Morgan, Branden and Alex; and great-grandson, Riley.

Martin Williamson

Martin Williamson, age 58, of Oxford, passed away July 13, 2014. A native of Macon, Martin graduated from Monroe Academy in Forsyth where he played both football and basketball. He had been employed by Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. since 1979. Martin was an avid golfer, and loved fishing on Lake Oconee.  He enjoyed his friends and was always willing to help anyone at any time.   He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, and son, who always put his family and friends before himself.

 

Martin is survived by his wife of 32 years, Beth D. Williamson of Oxford; children, Billy Williamson and fiancƩ Sandra Juvan of Boynton Beach, FL, Ashleigh Gordon and husband, Erik, Thomas Williamson, Nicholas Williamson, all of Oxford; three very special children, Zachary, Madison, and Zoe Birmann; parents, Bill and Mae Williamson of Macon; siblings and their spouses, Roy and Beth H. Williamson, Patricia and John Meservey, Terry and Yvonne Williamson, Tim and Jenny Williamson, all of Macon; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, July 16, 2014, 2:00 P.M., at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Richard Pruitt officiating.  Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Tuesday, July 15, from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M.

Andy Grimes, age 50, of Covington, passed away July 13, 2014.  Andy was a member of the Newton Hayriders & Crossfires Square dance club. He loved animals and enjoyed collecting Coca-Cola memorabilia. Andy had a straight forward personality, never met a stranger, and he will be remembered for his amazing smile. He was loved by many, and will be missed by all of his friends and family.

 

Survivors include his best friend, Adam Jones; brother, Ricky Grimes; aunt, Ruth Henderson; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his special friend, Janie Bowles.

Rick Hembree, age 54, of Covington, passed away July 10, 2014.  He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.  Rick also loved his church, reading his bible, listening to music and riding his Harley.  He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Raymond Hembree, Sr.

 

Rick is survived by his mother, Ellen Hembree, of Mableton; son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Jamie Hembree; daughters and son-in-law, Mysti Starr, Melissa and Josh Moore, Samantha Hembree, all of Covington; grandchildren, Brianna Hembree, Chase Taylor, Lexi Moore, Tristan Hembree, and Kenzie Moore.

Obit - R. Dale Pearce

R. Dale Pearce passed away at home on Sunday, July 6, 2014. He was born December 3, 1948, in Gadsden, Alabama. Dale graduated from Towers High School, in Decatur, in 1967, where he played football, ran track and wrestled. He earned his Bachelors of Business Administration degree, with Honors, at the University of Georgia, in 1971. He was a member of Chi Psi fraternity. He later received his Masters of Business Administration degree from Georgia State University. Dale spent his career in a variety of sales, marketing, and management positions with Ford Motor Company in Ohio, Michigan and California. Dale and his wife, Linda, returned to Georgia 10 years ago settling in Covington where Dale worked for Colony Realty. He held a number of offices with the East Metro Board of Realtors, including President. Throughout his life, Dale was devoted to his family and faith. He enjoyed biking, kayaking and playing golf. He was an avid Bulldog fan. Dale was a loving husband, son, father and grandfather, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his father, Ellis Pearce.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Linda Ball Pearce; children, Rachel Freer of Evergreen, CO, Dr. Zachary and Carrie Pearce of Grand Rapids, MI; grandchildren, Logan, Emelia and Waverly; mother, Rose "Bunny" Pearce; sister and brother-in-law, Kathy and Tom Pickering of Jasper, GA; brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Melanie Pearce of Allen, TX.

Dennis Veale - CORRECTED OBIT

Dennis Veale, 61, of Covington, passed away July 5, 2014.  Mr. Veale worked for the Internal Revenue Service for 37 ½ years.  In addition to collecting Coca Cola memorabilia and old coins, Dennis enjoyed camping, playing cards, watching game shows, and listening to music.  He will be remembered for his sense of humor. Preceding him in death were his parents, W.C. and Sylvia Veale; and brother-in-law, Smiley Hardy.

 

Survivors include his sister, Evelyn Hardy; brother Travis Veale; niece, Lisa Mayes, nephews, Allen Lackey, Keith Lackey, Jeff Lackey; and great-nieces and great nephews.

Misty Hicks

Misty Hicks, of Covington, passed away July 3, 2014, at the age of 76.  Mrs. Hicks loved life and enjoyed spending time with her family. Her hobbies included cooking and crocheting.  After retiring from Mobil Chemical, she worked as a local realtor.

Sara Ruth Henderson, age 90, of Oxford, passed away July 2, 2014. Mrs. Henderson cherished spending time with her Lord in prayer, and faithfully attended Gospel Tabernacle, in Covington. She was an avid Atlanta Braves fan, enjoyed drinking her coffee and eating desserts, and loved singing gospel music with her family's group, The Henderson Family. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, and will be missed by her family and friends. Mrs. Henderson was preceded in death by her daughter, Jennifer Wilson; husband, William Ralph Henderson; and her parents, Thomas H. and Elizabeth (Moss) Fleming.

 

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Tip Vaughn of Social Circle, Sarita and R.G. Stewart of Oxford; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
