Obit - Bobby Joe Dial
Bobby Joe Dial, age 63, of Covington, passed away January 29, 2015. He loved his family dearly and will be missed by all who knew him. Bobby Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Archie Joe and Hazel (Hall) Dial.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Debra Ball Dial; daughters and sons-in-law, Jodi and David Garner, Julie and Chad Langley; son and daughter-in-law, BJ and Jennifer Dial; grandchildren, Erica Garner, Shelby Garner, Jared Garner, Macy Langley, Lucas Langley, Parker Dial, Mattie Dial, all of Covington; brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Cindy Dial of Oxford; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Charles Brown
Charles "Charlie" Brown of Covington, passed away January 24, 2015, at the age of 81. Charles was devoted to his family and loved spending time with them. He committed himself to spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. Charlie never met a stranger and loved lending a helping hand. He loved the color red and enjoyed wearing it every day. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Lee and Mattie Bolton Brown; brother, Kenneth Brown; nephew, Kenny Brown.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Nancy Brown of Covington; daughters and son-in-law, Lynne and Ted Higginbotham of Gadsden, AL, Vicki and John Johnston of Covington; sons and daughter-in-law, Troy and Sandra Brown of Clover, SC, Jeff and Darlene Brown of Cullman, AL, Doug Maddox of Philadelphia, PA; 18 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 2 great nephews

Obit - Peggy Davis
Peggy M. Davis of Covington, passed away January 22, 2015, at the age of 84. A woman of strong Christian faith, Mrs. Davis was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Covington, where she faithfully attended the Murphy's Gang Sunday School class. She was a loving and devoted wife, always very supportive of her husband's ministry wherever he was led to serve. She devoted her time serving others, and was beloved by many people in the Covington area. Mrs. Davis was a master flower gardener, and enjoyed traveling, bird watching and square dancing. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Cleon (Cook) McEachern.
Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Rev. Hugo M. Davis, Jr.; children and their spouses, Gary M. and Michelle E. Davis of Statesboro, J. Mark and Alison W. Davis of Covington, Kay D. DuBois of Winder; grandchildren, Brad C. Davis, Ben M. Davis, Lisa D. Domm, Ashley L. Davis, Kelly A. Kerr, Chase Davis, Taylor E. Pittman, Andrew M. Obit - Ethel Jolley
Ethel Jolley, 96, of Covington, passed away January 23, 2015. She was born October 17, 1918, in Roscoe, PA, to the late John and Elizabeth Furlong. Ethel met and married Alton Jolley while they both were serving in the Navy at the Naval Air Station, in Chamblee. Together they moved to Newton County, in 1951, where they began their career in the dairy business. She was very active in the community and was one of the founding members of the West Newton Home Demonstration Club. She was the oldest member of Prospect United Methodist Church, where she once served as Youth Director, Sunday School teacher, church pianist and choir member. In her later years, Ethel enjoyed playing the piano while entertaining the residents of Westbrook Nursing Home and Oxton Manor, in Social Circle, where she resided for a short time. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her daughter, Betsy Davenport.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Glennis Jolley, Richard and Diane Jolley; son-in-law, Steve Davenport; foster son, John Cowan and his wife, Ann; grandchildren, Heather and Matt Kirby, Jennifer and Travis Breedlove, Jason and Brooke Jolley, Rachael Jolley, Matthew Davenport, John Mark and Jessie Davenport; great-grandchildren, Jacob Kirby, Sarah Katherine Kirby, Anna Grace Kirby, Lily Claire Kirby, Emma Breedlove, Landon Breedlove, Jackson Jolley, Chandler Jolley, Matthew Jolley and Lincoln Davenport.

Obit - T.W. Dean
T.W. Dean of Newborn, passed away January 21, 2015, at the age of 86. Mr. Dean was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, in Newborn. Additionally, he was a member of the Newton Hay Riders, where he was able to express his love for square dancing, and the Singing Saints of the First Baptist Church of Conyers. Mr. Dean was a dedicated employee of CSX for more than 37 years. Following his retirement, he and his wife, Mary Jane, were avid travelers and enjoyed visiting new places. He adored his family and will be missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Weldon Lee and Anne (Long) Dean; sisters, Emma Nunnally, Lois Fortson; and his first wife, Evelyn Joyce (Dudley) Dean.
Survivors include his loving wife, Mary Jane Dean; sons and daughters-in-law, James W. Deborah (Cissy) Evans Foster
Deborah (Cissy) Evans Foster, of Covington, passed away January 18, 2015, at the age of 46. Cissy was a little league football team cheerleader and while in high school, she managed the Newton County High School baseball team in 1986 and 1987. She was a member of The Baptist Tabernacle and taught first and second grade at Tabernacle Christian School, as well as home schooling several students. Cissy loved people and will be remembered as a person who loved people.
Survivors include her husband of 22 years, Frank J. Foster; daughter, Skyler Nichole Foster, both of Jackson; parents, Ernest and Liz Evans of Covington; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Carmen Foster, also of Covington; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ernie and Serena Evans, Johnny and Kim Evans, Greg Evans, all of Covington; sister-in-law, Carla Johnson of Covington; brother-in-law, Peter Foster of Social Circle; as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Marie Dodson of Covington, age 87, passed away peacefully, January 17, 2014, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Dodson was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She loved unconditionally, and she was loved and admired by anyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. She enjoyed children and was always happiest when she was with her family especially her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mrs. Dodson was also a woman of faith. She loved God and was a member of Jersey Holiness Church for over 40 years. Mrs. Dodson's greatest desire was for her family to love God and to love each other. A seamstress by trade, she worked for Arrow Shirts for many years and retired from Belk Department Store after over 20 years of service doing alterations. After retirement, she continued doing alterations from her home. She was an excellent seamstress and charged a reasonable price, so she had a large clientele. She considered each and every person who walked through her door, her friend. An amazing cook, she would prepare Thanksgiving Dinner every year for her entire family, and that was no easy task. According to her family, "Nothing tastes as good as Grandma's." She was known for her fabulous Red Velvet and German Chocolate cakes. In the last years of her life, she suffered from Alzheimer's disease and was a resident of Riverside Healthcare Center. Even with this devastating disease, she continued to bless everyone who crossed her path. Staff and residents of Riverside loved her. Mrs. Dodson was preceded in death by her husband, David L. Dodson; sons, LCP David Paul Dodson, James "Jimmy" Monroe Dodson; son-in-law, SSG (Ret) Jerry G. Barfield; great-granddaughter, Abigail "Abbi" Lynn Dooley; parents, Samuel and Etha Ann Wadsworth.

Alice Laverne Tumlin of Covington, passed away January 17, 2015, at the age of 71. Mrs. Tumlin was an exceptional cook and well-known for her homemade biscuits. She had a green thumb and enjoyed flower gardening. She took pride in her appearance and made sure her hair was always fixed to a tee. Mrs. Tumlin loved being a mother to her five children and especially cherished the time she spent with her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Juliette (Ramey) Tucker.

Henry G. Carter
Henry G. Carter, of Blairsville, passed away January 11, 2015, at the age 78. Mr. Carter was a graduate of
Georgia Academy for the Blind. He worked in the concessions business for 40 years. Mr. Carter enjoyed woodworking, as well as listening to gospel and country music. He was preceded in death by his parents, Grady and Gladys Carter; sisters, Frances Canup, Hazel Harvey, Betty Price; and brother, Edward Carter.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Myrtle Floyd Carter; son, Walter Carter, both of Blairsville; brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Nancy Carter of Covington; sister-in-law, Janice Carter of Oxford; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Ann Brewer
Ann Brewer of Covington, passed away January 2, 2015, at the age of 85. She was born August 20, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She spent her entire life serving others, and was especially known for her work on behalf of those suffering from cystic fibrosis. Additionally, she was involved with her local community through the Newton Medical Center hospital auxiliary, The Church of the Good Shepard, the Newton County Historical Society, the Garden Club and other groups. Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Oby T. Brewer.
A Memorial Service for Ann will be held Friday, January 9, 2015, 11:00 AM, at The Church of the Good Shepherd, with The Rev. M. Edwin Beckham and Rev. Ruth Healy officiating. Following the Memorial Service, Mrs. Brewer will be interred in Covington City Cemetery beside her husband, Oby. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Church of the Good Shepherd, 4140 Clark Street, Covington, GA 30014.
Terry Armistead
Terry Armistead, of Covington, passed away January 7, 2015, at the age of 62. A hard worker, Terry worked at Mobil Chemical for 20 years and was a tow truck driver with B & H Wrecker Service. Loving husband, Daddy, and Poppie, he adored spending time with his family. Terry never met a stranger. He was preceded in death by his mother, Annie Mae Mitchell Durden; father, Floyd Armistead; birth mother, Alice Mitchell Bales; and grandson, Zacharia Markus Dial.

Gladys Ellis of Oxford, passed away January 4, 2015, at the age of 82. Mrs. Ellis enjoyed crocheting, listening to gospel music, cooking and watching wrestling and older game shows. She adored her family, enjoyed taking care of them and especially cherished the time she spent with her great-grandchildren, Devon and Ryan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clinton "Shorty" Ellis; and her parents, Willis and Ella Mae (Roberson) Jay.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Frankie Puckett; son and daughter-in-law, Don and Angie Ellis, all of Covington; grandchildren, Chris and Rebecca Braswell of Oxford, Jimbo and Heather Sorrows of Covington, Crystal Ellis of Conyers, Brandon Ellis of Jefferson, Benson Lane, Jason Lane, both of Covington; 14 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Glenn Stephens; brother, Lynn Jay; sister-in-law, Betty Jay; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Ellis will be held Thursday, January 8, 2015, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Obit - Jeffery Broxton
Jeffery Keith Broxton, Sr., of Covington, passed away January 4, 2015, at the age of 56. Jeff was a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church, in Eatonton, until his sickness prohibited from attending. He supported all church activities, but missions were closest to his heart. Once diagnosed with ALS, Jeff's main focus was leading as many people to Christ, as possible. He was a loving son, husband, father and grandfather, who was a dedicated family man and always cared more about his family and friends than himself. Jeff was preceded in death by his father, David C. Broxton, Sr.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Glenda Broxton; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Jason Lawrence; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery, Jr. and Renee Broxton, all of Covington; grandchildren, Haleigh Broxton, Cameron Lawrence, Matthew Broxton, Caleb Lawrence, Makayla Broxton, Annaleigh Lawrence; mother, Marie Broxton; sister, Cindy Hegwood, both of Shady Dale; brothers, David Broxton of Stockbridge, Fletcher Broxton of McDonough; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Roy Howard Mitchell
Roy Howard Mitchell, Sr., of Covington, passed away January 3, 2015, his 87th birthday. Mr. Mitchell loved music, especially bluegrass, gospel and country. He enjoyed playing his guitar and singing in church, as well as fishing and gardening. Mr. Mitchell attended Cornish Mountain Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pansy M. Mitchell
Survivors include his children and their spouses, Vivian Irene Watson, Robert H. and Linda Mitchell, Roy H., Jr. and Avil Mitchell, Marcia Karen and Doug Shelton, Brenda S. and Paul Campbell, Teresa Lynn Mitchell; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter; sister, Edith Mitchell; brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Julia Mitchell; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert M. Herndon
Robert M. Herndon, 1SG, Retired, passed away January 3, 2015, at the age of 88. 1SG Herndon was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church in Covington for 25 years. After being drafted into the US Army, he proudly served his country for 22 years, serving in Big Red One, 101st Airborne (Screaming Eagles) Divison, and 11th Airborne Division. He served in Italy, Germany, Japan, and had the privilege of training many soldiers and leaders. 1SG Herndon taught ROTC for 20 years, teaching at St. John's Military School in Kansas, Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, PA, and George High School in Atlanta. Preceding him in death were his parents T.W. and Grace (Underwood) Herndon.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Madeline Herndon; daughters and sons-in-law, Belinda Herndon, Sheila and Steven Leingang, Cindy and Mike Franklin, Robin and Brent West; grandchildren, Treasa and Michael Waters, Bobby and Leigh Hays, Joe and Cristina Franklin, Josh and Ashley Franklin, Brittany and Mark Miller, J.B. and Kristen West, Matt and Nikki Hays, Meghan DuMestre, Blake West; as well as 20 great-grandchildren.

Virgil Young Cook Eady, Jr.
Virgil Young Cook Eady, Jr. passed away at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 2, 2015. He was born at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia, on December 8, 1935. Mr. Eady was a fifth generation resident of Oxford, Georgia, and a fourth generation graduate of Emory University. As a youth, he was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and reached the rank of Eagle Scout. He also worked as a lifeguard and waterfront director at Camp Glisson in Dahlonega, Georgia, in the summers of 1953-55. In 1956, he served as president of the North Georgia Methodist Youth Fellowship.
Mr. Eady was the owner and principal broker of Alcovy Realty Company in Covington, Georgia, and he was a founder and president of the Newton County Board of Realtors. During his real estate career, he developed 15 subdivisions in Newton County. Mr. Eady was the first accredited farm and land broker in the state of Georgia and served as president of the Georgia Chapter of the Farm and Land Brokers Association. He served as chairman of the study committee to reorganize the Newton County Chamber of Commerce in 1972, and he served as vice-president of the Covington Kiwanis Club in the 1970s.
As a life-long resident of Oxford, Georgia, Mr. Eady served on the City of Oxford Planning Commission for eight years and was chairman for five. He also served on the Oxford City Council, chairing the personnel committee. Mr. Eady was a devoted member of Allen Memorial United Methodist Church, serving on the administrative council and as lay leader. He also has served as lay delegate to annual conferences of the United Methodist Church, North Georgia Conference, for many years. Mr. Eady was a member and past president of the Oxford Lions Club.
Mr. Eady is the son of the late Dr. Virgil Y.C. Eady, Sr., and the late Susanne Stone Eady. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Louise Norton Eady; his son, Jonathan Edward Eady and wife Theresa Turner Eady, and their children Michelle, Jessica, Kathryn, and Rachel; his daughter, Ginger Eady Baldwin and husband James Daniel Baldwin; his son, David Stone Eady and wife Vicki Williams Eady, and their children Benjamin and Grayson; and his sister Emily Eady Herrington and husband Frank Bruce Herrington. He also is survived by two additional brothers-in-law and 10 nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors Sunday, January 4, 2015 from 3:00-5:00 pm at Caldwell and Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, Covington, GA, 770-786-7062. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 5, 2:00 pm, at Allen Memorial United Methodist Church, 803 Whatcoat Street, Oxford, Georgia 30054, with Rev. Max Vincent officiating. Interment will follow in Oxford Historical Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting gifts and donations be made to Camp Glisson in Mr. Eady's memory. He was a long-time supporter of this vibrant children's camp ministry of the North Georgia United Methodist Conference. Richard P. "Ricky" Heath
Richard P. "Ricky" Heath, of Covington, passed away January 2, 2015, at the age of 52. Ricky enjoyed hunting, fishing, swimming and woodworking. In addition, he loved carpentry and building things. Ricky was fun loving and well-liked. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sonny and Alice Heath; and brother, Kemp Heath.
Survivors include his sister, Wanda Allen of Covington; brothers and sister-in-law, Larry Heath of Covington, Donald and Sherry Heath of Monroe, Alan Heath of Lithonia; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Mr. Heath will be held Monday, January 5, 2015, 1:00 PM, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 3134 Floyd Street, in Covington. Interment will follow in Lawnwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday, January 4, from 6:00 – 9:00 PM.
Della Astin Kitchens
Della Astin Kitchens, 93, of Porterdale, passed away peacefully January 2, 2015. Della was an active member of Porterdale Baptist Church prior to her declining health. She retired from Bibb Manufacturing after 35 years of service and was member and past president of Porterdale Woman's Club. In her later years she enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren. She lived a very full life and was deeply loved by her family and many friends, who will miss her greatly. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Carl Kitchens; great-grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth and Abe Hopkins; sister, Sallie Langham; brothers, Albert Astin, Raymond Astin, and Lunnie Astin.
Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Gwen Hammond, Jo Ann and Bobby Hopkins all of Covington; grandchildren, Mike and Kelli Hopkins, Paige and Bill Vandergriff, Deneen and Robby Taylor, Brian and Linda Hammond; 13 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Herman Astin of Monroe.

Jean Remley
Jean Babington Remley, 98, passed away peacefully at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle December 31, 2014 surrounded by loved ones. Born November 22, 1916 in Council Bluffs, Iowa , Mrs. Remley was a resident of Covington since 1939. She is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Joseph M. Remley (Joe). Survivors include one daughter Jeannette R. Harris and son-in-law, Ned Harris of Monticello, and one granddaughter Sharon Jean Kinman-Hall, and husband Rod Hall of Lawrenceville. She is also survived by two great grandchildren Chase Remley Hall and Avery Leigh Hall.
Mrs. Remley enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Covington Garden Club & Women's Club and Ladies Garden Club of Athens. She enjoyed cooking, traveling, and was an avid reader and wordsmith. In later years she enjoyed spending time with her great grandchildren. She lived a very full life and brought much joy to her family that cherished her. She will greatly be missed.
Graveside Services for Mrs. Remley will be held Saturday, January 3, 2015, 1:00 PM, at the Jackson City Cemetery, Cemetery Street, in Jackson, with Chaplain Jim Ross officiating.
