Robert M. Herndon

Robert M. Herndon, 1SG, Retired, passed away January 3, 2015, at the age of 88.  1SG Herndon was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church in Covington for 25 years.  After being drafted into the US Army, he proudly served his country for 22 years, serving in Big Red One, 101st Airborne  (Screaming Eagles) Divison, and 11th Airborne Division.  He served in Italy, Germany, Japan, and had the privilege of training many soldiers and leaders.  1SG Herndon taught ROTC for 20 years, teaching at St. John's Military School in Kansas, Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, PA, and George High School in Atlanta.  Preceding him in death were his parents T.W. and Grace (Underwood) Herndon.

 

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Madeline Herndon; daughters and sons-in-law, Belinda Herndon, Sheila and Steven Leingang, Cindy and Mike Franklin, Robin and Brent West; grandchildren, Treasa and Michael Waters, Bobby and Leigh Hays, Joe and Cristina Franklin, Josh and Ashley Franklin, Brittany and Mark Miller, J.B. and Kristen West, Matt and Nikki Hays, Meghan DuMestre, Blake West; as well as 20 great-grandchildren.

 

A Graveside Service for 1SG Herndon will be held Tuesday, January 6, 2015, 3:00 PM, at Lawnwood Memorial Park, with Rev. Mike Franklin and Jason Williams officiating.  The family will receive friends at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Monday, January 5, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Solid Rock Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1144, Covington, GA  30015.
