obit for Bobby Payne

 

Bobby Payne, age 87, of Covington, passed away July 29, 2018. Mr. Payne was a proud veteran of the United States Army. He was an active member of both the VFW and the America Legion. As a member of the American Legion, he also belonged to their group known as "The Cooties". Mr. Payne provided for his family with his work as a mechanic – a profession he genuinely loved. Whether attending church together or dining out, he enjoyed time spent with loved ones. He also delighted in the food and fellowship with his friends at the Waffle House – it was one of Mr. Payne's favorite spots. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Grace (Jones) Payne; son, Chris Payne; parents, Herschel and Grace (Nelson) Payne; and sister, Elizabeth Arnold.

 

Survivors include his daughters, Brenda Armistead, Sandy Arthur; sons and daughters-in-law, Randall and Carol Payne, Myles and Elaine Payne; grandchildren, Jamie Jenkins, Jodie Wilson, Julie and Mark Bryson, Joseph and Megan Payne, Jessica Payne; great-grandchildren, Nikki Wilson, Andy Wilson, Sheridan Bryson, Tyler Bryson, Briana Bryson, Taylor Bryson, Jaxon Payne, Raylan Payne, Olivia Cribb; sister, Carol Payne; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gerald and Barbara Payne, Johnny and Faye Payne; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mr. Payne will be held Thursday, August 2, 2018, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Pastor Rick Stucke officiating and interment following in Bethel Community Church Cemetery, 1147 Panola Road, Stone Mountain. Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home, one hour prior to his service, from 11:00 A.M. – 12:00 Noon.

Rhonda Tate Robinson

Rhonda Tate Robinson of Covington, passed away July 27, 2018, at the age of 62. Rhonda was a faithful member of Mansfield Baptist Church and loved Southern Gospel music. She said that it "spoke to her soul like nothing else". Rhonda was a 1973 graduate of Clarke Central High, in Athens. She was an avid fan of UGA football and enjoyed vacationing to the beach and mountains. Rhonda was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed by all who knew her.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Bettie Tate.

 

Survivors include her loving husband of 13 years, Pat Robinson; sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Christy Drew, Ben and Erica Drew; grandchildren, Alyson Chudzik, Aubrie Drew, Tate Drew, Benion Drew, Faith Drew, Raleigh Drew; step-children, Emily Robinson, Marley Robinson, Emmett Robinson; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry W. and Linda Tate; nephews, Timothy W. Tate, Chris Morris; lifelong friend (like a sister), Linda Turner; as well as numerous other close friends.

 

A Memorial Service for Rhonda will be held Tuesday, July 31, 2018, 6:00 P.M., at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Dr. Jeff Perkins and Pastor Allen Drew officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, two hours prior to the service, from 4:00 - 6:00 PM. Ronald "Robert" Sweat

Ronald "Robert" Sweat, Sr., of Covington, passed away July 25, 2018, at the age of 77. A faithful member of The Baptist Tabernacle, Mr. Sweat adored his church family. He met the love of his life, Nancy, and they were married after only two weeks and remained together for over 58 years. Mr. Sweat had great sense of humor – he even enjoyed making up his own songs. A very dependable man, he only missed one day of work in 40 years. He was happiest spending time with his family and grandchildren, and he often visited loved ones who lived in Brunswick and Waycross. Mr. Sweat was preceded in death by his parents, O.T. and Evelyn Sweat; and brother, Charlie Sweat.

Robert Alan Shepherd

Robert Alan Shepherd of Newborn, passed away July 20, 2018, at the age of 59. Alan lost his courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his loved ones, at his beloved family farm. He was a loving family man, and devoted husband, whose kind and compassionate spirit was evident to all who knew him. Although Alan was dedicated to his work and providing for his family, he carved out time for his favorite hobbies. A water sports enthusiast and competitive slalom skier, Alan was in his element whenever boating, skiing or swimming. He was also an avid fan of the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Falcons. Alan enjoyed traveling - especially to Amelia Island, Daytona Beach and the mountains. He loved animals and spending time on the farm. Whether watching the Braves with his mom or taking car rides with his dad, Alan relished the time spent with family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bobby and Mattie Shepherd; grandparents, Jim and Estelle Shepherd, Walker and Mattie Malone; mother-in-law, Corine Walker.

Tony L. Mills

Tony L. Mills of Covington, passed away July 19, 2018, at the age of 78. Mr. Mills was a lifetime resident of Newton County. A licensed minister, he earned a doctorate in Bible Theology from the New England Bible Institute. Mr. Mills was a faithful and supportive member   of The Baptist Tabernacle, where he was a professor in their Bible Institute and teacher of the Men's Bible Class. He retired after 30 years of dedicated service with the Newton County Sheriff's Office. Mr. Mills was an avid outdoorsman and lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. He was preceded in death by his father, Hubert Emory Mills; mother, Rosie Lee (Johnson) Collis; and sister Ann Tucker.

 

Survivors include his longtime friend, Dr. David C. Moody and his family; nieces, Morgan Carnes, Cheryl Chamberlin, Lila Crawford, Holly McCullough; as well as other great nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Dr. Mills will be held Sunday, July 22, 2018, 3:00 P.M., at The Baptist Tabernacle, 10119 Access Road, in Covington, with Dr. David C. Moody officiating. Larry Landrum Mulkey, "Snake", of Covington, passed away July 19, 2018, at the age of 76. Gifted with a quick wit and infectious sense of humor, Mr. Mulkey was a man who loved his family. He hosted a weekly breakfast for loved ones; it was his way to fellowship and stay connected. Mr. Mulkey took great pride in his work and was a dedicated employee for the state of Georgia for many years. In addition to his annual Christmas tradition of candy-making and hosting a family breakfast, Mr. Mulkey was known for his extensive knife collection and his love of the outdoors. He often worked in the garden and enjoyed observing wildlife. Mr. Mulkey was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Vivian Mulkey; sister, Cynthia Newsome, Elaine Nettles; and brother, Timoth Mulkey.

Bobby L. Payne of Conyers, passed away July 14, 2018, at the age of 87. Mr. Payne proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict. He enjoyed playing the guitar and was an avid golfer. Mr. Payne was funny and quick whited with a dry sense of humor. He loved his family and will be remembered as proud and caring man. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Barbara Burdette Payne; parents, Ardell and Eva Payne.

J.T. Mask

J.T. Mask of Covington, passed away July 13, 2018, at the age of 90. Mr. Mask proudly served in the United States Army during World War II in Germany. He retired after working many years for Atlanta Gas Light. Mr. Mask enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and cooking. A family man, he was known for being kind, affectionate, honorable and a man of integrity. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Dempie Mask.

 

Survivors include his loving wife of 47 years, Ann S. Mask; Children, Teresa Cowan, Melanie Bell, Randy Norwood and partner Gabriel Perez, Kevin and Nicole Mask; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

 

A Celebration of Life for Mr. Mask will be held Wednesday, July 18, 2018, 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1115 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Chris Conner officiating. Ophelia Page of Oxford, passed away July 12, 2018, at the age of 82. Mrs. Page faithfully attended Living Waters Baptist Church. She enjoyed both reading and listening to the Bible on tape. Whether taking her grandchildren on trips or providing delicious, home-cooked meals, Mrs. Page loved spending time with family. Some of her favorite hobbies included making crafts, crocheting and painting. Mrs. Page also liked to collect old men and women figurines. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Page, Jr.; son, Roy Page, III; parents, Thomas Benjamin and Dessie Mae Carter; and mother-in-law, Annie Mae Page.

James Hubert Ivey of Loganville, passed away July 10, 2018, at the age of 94. Known as "Pop" to the kids, Mr. Ivey was a devoted husband and father. He enjoyed being outdoors in the nature, traveling to the mountains and fishing. In addition, he liked woodworking in his spare time. Mr. Ivey was a simple Christian man and loved his family – especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, James Douglas Ivey.

Todd James Shields

Todd James Shields of Conyers, passed away June 9, 2018, at the age of 55. Todd was a 1981 graduate of Oak Ridge Highs School in Orlando, Florida. His career was in the food service where he worked for Royal Foods and Sysco. Todd was and avid fan of sports – especially the Florida Gators, Atlanta Braves and Oakland Raiders. Coaching his son Sean in baseball, he also loved to play baseball and played throughout his life. In addition, Todd loved to play golf. He had a larger-than-life personality and would give the shirt off his back for you. Todd will be remembered as an amazing and dedicated father. He was preceded in death by his father, John F. Shields.

 

Survivors include his wife, Angie Shields; son, Sean Shields and mother Etta Shields; step-sons, Ashton Ogletree and wife Tara, Aaron Ogletree; mother, Sandra M. William "Bill" Faith

OBITUARY

William "Bill" Faith of Covington, passed away July 9, 2018, at 69 years of age. A veteran of the United States Army, Bill proudly and dutifully served his country during the Vietnam War. His favorite pastimes reflected his love of the outdoors. Bill enjoyed riding his four-wheeler, hunting, fishing, and working in the yard. He also liked to do projects and home improvements. Affectionately known to his grandchildren as "PawPaw", Bill adored his grandkids and loved cheering them on at ballgames. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be remembered for his much-loved saying, "If you can't do something right, don't do it at all!" Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Douglas Eugene and Margorie (Ford) Faith.

 

Survivors include loving wife of 40 years, Patricia Faith; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Jeremy White; son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Angie Faith; grandchildren, RJ, Desirae, Miranda, Robert; sister, Patty Busbee; brother, Allen Faith; as well as several nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mr. Bill will be held Wednesday, July 11, 2018, 2:00 P.M, at the Chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Rev. Billy Sheppard and Johnny Jordan officiating and interment following in Fairview Memorial Gardens, 164 Fairview Road, in Stockbridge. Roy Lee Taylor

Roy Lee Taylor of Covington passed away July 8, 2018, at 90 years of age.  Born in Douglasville, to Chester Andrew and Lindy Katherine (Camp) Taylor, Mr. Roy was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon.  In addition, he drove the church bus for 28 years, never having an accident. The Taylor home was a safe place for over 45 foster children during a twenty-year span.  After retiring from Mayfield Dairy, Mr. Roy worked for People's Drug Store for 17 years.  An excellent cook, known for the best biscuits in the world, he enjoyed gardening and sharing the vegetables he raised with the community.  Mr. Taylor was preceded in death by his wife, Lottie Ovila (Shed) Taylor; and his parents.

 

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Danny Stone of Oxford, Diane Rigdon of Porterdale, Peggy and Dennis Townsend of Crandall; sons and daughters-in-law, James Taylor of Covington, Lamar and Dora Taylor, Nathan and Elaine Taylor, all of Oxford, Albert and Wanda Taylor of Monticello, Ralph Taylor of Covington, Wesley Taylor of Covington; sister, Cassie Sibyl Vincent of Newnan; 26 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; several -great-great-grandchildren; well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

A Funeral Service for Mr. Taylor will be held Wednesday, July 11, 2018, 11:00 AM, at the chapel of Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, Rev. obit for Bob McCormick

 

Bob McCormick, age 69, of Social Circle, passed away July 6, 2018. Mr. McCormick was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather. He instilled in his children a strong love of family and a passion for food and music – a soundtrack of his life played in the background anytime family gathered together. Mr. McCormick led by example with his irrefutable integrity and tireless work ethic. He was a craftsman, a model railroad enthusiast, and he enjoyed tooling around in his garden. Mr. McCormick was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Ruth McCormick.

 

Survivors include his loving wife, Mary Lu McCormick, son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Nicole McCormick; daughters and sons-in-law, Amy McCormick and Jonathan Bender, Katy and Scott Johnson; 8 grandchildren; and sisters and brothers-in-law; Karen and Rick Cater, Margaret and Jim Primerano.

 

A Memorial Service for Mr. McCormick will be held Saturday, July 14, 2018, 11:00 A.M., at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, 1215 Access Road, in Covington, with Deacon Mark Johnson and Jim Ross or John Clegg officiating * Family to verify. Rina Molina De Leonor

Rina Molina De Leonor, age 82, of Covington, passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2018. Mrs. Molina was a devoted Christian who loved the Lord and delighted in sharing her faith with others. Her generous and loving nature was evident in the way she cared for her family and friends; she enjoyed cooking delicious meals for them as often as possible. Mrs. Molina liked to play bingo and was known for her gardening skills. Those who knew and loved her will remember, with great affection, her favorite catch-phrase, "Que Valor"! Mrs. Molina was preceded in death by her parents, Tadeo and Ernestina (Molina) Contreras; as well as her brother, Armando Contreras.

 

Survivors include her devoted husband of 55 years, Vicente Leonor; daughter and son-in-law, Deisy Molina and Santos Martinez of Covington; grandchildren, Henry Alvarez, Jorge Alvarez, Miriam Martinez, Melanie Martinez; great-grandchildren, Henry Alvarez, Dayana Alvarez, Genesis Galilea Alvarez, Estrella Alvarez, Daisy Michelle Alvarez, Talan Ravgiala, Mila Grace Tamachio, Royce Potts; sisters, Ana Contreras, Maria De Los Angeles Contreras; brothers, Angel Molina, Rodolfo Contreras, Rigoberto Molina; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mitch Nicholson, 38, of Covington, died July 3, 2018. Mitch, a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, was a fun-loving friend who enjoyed life. He was a hard worker and was employed by numerous roofing companies for the last several years.  Mitch loved being on the water. Swimming, boating and vacationing at the beach were among his favorite pastimes. He was an adoring father, loving son and friend to many. Mitch will certainly be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his father, Mitchell Junior Nicholson, I; and his sister, Laura Cargile.

 

Survivors include his son, Gage Nicholson; mother and step-father, Donna and Jimmy Monk of Social Circle; sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Chris Richardson of Covington; former wife, Autumn Nicholson of Covington; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Hazel Baker Lester of Covington, passed away Tuesday July 3, 2018, at the age of 79. A devoted and faithful Christian, Mrs. Lester was passionate about sharing her love of the Lord - including the time she spent teaching children in Sunday School. Known for being selfless and always putting the needs of others before her own, she cared for her family in the same manner. Mrs. Lester's generosity changed the lives of many, and she will be remembered as a loving mother, sister, aunt, and dedicated wife. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Oliver Lester; parents, Grady Lee and Frances Juliette Baker; daughter, Linda Christine Lester; sister, Linda Moore; and brother, Lewis Baker.

 

Survivors include her sister, Frances Walraven of Covington; sister-in-law, Frances Baker of Decatur; daughter-at-heart, Janice Faye Craig of Loganville; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
